Welcome to the Revolution

With the fall of the Berlin Wall, the United States proclaimed itself the world's only super-power and hawked American-style capitalism as the only economic system worth considering. How the mighty have fallen. A needless war in Iraq now calls into question whether the American military can control the oil and natural gas of the Persian Gulf and Caspian Sea, while the current financial chaos has driven the faith-based Bush administration to pray for government ownership in banks, insurance companies and other financial institutions.

No matter who becomes president, Obama or McCain, this double-barreled cock-up will force Washington to redefine the global role of the American military and the economic role of the US government. What should average citizens expect? What should we demand?

Start with the $615 billion in defense spending that Congress just passed. This was on top of $189.3 billion in the latest supplemental appropriations for wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and whatever else the Pentagon and its Congressional allies put into the bill. Even in Washington, this is real money, which saps the financial resources and political will to pay for domestic initiatives such as health care, alternative energy and the creation of green jobs.

But beyond all that, what job will our civilian leaders now ask the military to do?

Neo-con ideologues, who are old allies of John McCain, have argued for years that the US military should serve as the world's policeman, largely to maintain control of global oil and natural gas. This would greatly profit American corporations and - more important to the neo-cons - give Washington a political weapon to reward or punish potential rivals, whether Chinese or European.

More of a traditional American nationalist, McCain has moved in the same direction. "In the Middle East," he explained back in 1992, "as long as the world's oil resources come from that area of the world, we have to be vitally involved." In backing the Georgians against Russia this year, he has similarly pointed to the need to keep an important oil pipeline out of Russian hands.

    What, then, of the Democrats?

    >From Franklin D. Roosevelt to Bill Clinton, they have quietly committed themselves to the same control of global oil and the same use of the military to defend that control. In fact, many of the now-Republican neo-cons learned their stance while working as aides to Democratic Sen. Henry "Scoop" Jackson, and many, if not most, of the foreign policy leaders among the Democrats still think the same way.

Until now, Obama has generally followed suit. But should he become president, he will face greatly reduced resources, his own competing priorities and a growing realization that the presence of American troops fuels enormous popular opposition in the oil-rich Islamic countries, as we've seen in both Saudi Arabia and Iraq.

No one can know from Obama's speeches or public record what he would decide. But the new realities open the door for aroused citizens - both Democratic and Republican - to force Congress to debate the question in the full glare of public attention. "No blood for oil" seems a good place to start, coupled with wholehearted support for the development of alternative energy resources.

On the government's new role in the economy, we have no idea what, if anything, McCain would do. Neither does he. At best, he would be wobbly and recalcitrant.

Obama, by contrast, has clearly called for smart new regulation of financial markets, which should clearly include a long, hard look at derivatives and other speculative devices.

He has called for a 90-day moratorium on mortgage foreclosures and a new stimulus package to create jobs and rebuild roads, bridges, water and sewage systems, and other parts of our crumbling infrastructure.

And, he has openly declared that medical care should be a right of all Americans. Eat your heart out, Rush Limbaugh.

But all this is only a bare beginning. The crap-shoot capitalists and free-market preachers made their wager and created a disaster. Now, no matter who wins the election, the time has come for the rest of us to take back our government and - in the words of the preamble to our Constitution - "promote the general welfare."

Social Democratic governments in Germany, Holland and Scandinavia have led the way in showing the humane direction we could go in education, social programs and greater tax equality. We should learn from what they've done, while creating our own American solutions to the very real problems Americans face every day.

Republicans and many right-wing Democrats will yell "Socialist," just as McCain and Palin have tried to brand Obama "a terrorist." Such smears have long been the tactic of those standing in the way of social progress, whether against women and African-Americans who wanted the right to vote or workers who wanted the right to organize themselves into unions.

The fight has often been bloody, even deadly. But in the end, we know which side won, and so do those who lost.

Unfortunately, revolutions

Unfortunately, revolutions aren't won by elections, especially not under totalitarian rule. It will take far more to bring down the tyrants who own this country and its people.

More a Pre-emptive Counter

More a Pre-emptive Counter Revolution.

@Brian: its that sort of

@Brian: its that sort of mentality that causes third party initiatives to fail. I guess you are happy with the two party system (actually one party system with two opposed factions)? C'mon, get real. Many Socialist Democracies have multiple parties and their countries haven't collapsed or fallen to the "commies", etc. Yet our two party system is failing every step of the way and people like you still laud it as the end all be all. sad but true. And as far as revolution, I agree wholeheartedly with frank1659. Sigh.

Revolution? Surely you jest.

Revolution? Surely you jest. Who, exactly, is going to revolt? The "boomers" are too old and narcissistic and Prozac-ed, and their kids are fat, spoiled, lazy and Ritalin-ed. Meanwhile, "our" government constantly reminds us that they are both ruthless and prepared for any "uprising" - massive illegal spying and immunity for the spyers, militarized police, NORTHCOM, Hallibuton detention centers, torture, indefinite detention without charge or council, pre-emptive activist arrests and peace group infiltrations, PATRIOT ACT I and II, Military Commissions Act, Homegrown Terrorist Act, mercenaries already deployed (N Orleans,) largest prison population on Earth, control of most media, and a host of other obey-or-die tactics and strategies. Plus, there's not a single potential "revolution" leader on the horizon - and if there were, he'd be taken out in a heartbeat. At this point, the Army could march into NYC and few would even blink. No - Americans will never "revolt" again.

Will keep this short, as

Will keep this short, as there are undoubtedly others waiting to have their say on this. For me, I agree with Mr. Weissman's point. We've exhausted ourselves with two pointless, fruitless wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as with the global war on terror, and any president, Democratic, Republican, Green, etc, will have to contend with diminished resources for those, and everything else that the Federal government is called upon to do. As for those who would say, "Well, let the state and local governments, or free enterprise, take care of those," I say, "nonsense." Most state and local governments have neither the resources, will nor authority to do so, and as for the "free market", well, let's just say that I trust capitalists to be capitalists and not do anything unless they think they can make a large wad of cash out of it. It really is long past time for us to re-think what our role in the international community should be, and how we should conduct ourselves as a member of it. Bullying other nations and peoples into doing what we want really hasn't worked out all that well for us, now, has it??? Likewise, neo-isolationalism won't work well for us, either. We have been, and are, a part of the international community for quite some time now, and we'd best start acting in a manner suited to a responsible, productive member of that community. We haven't, and that is, in my view, one of the main reasons why we are in the mess we are now.

What all of you US citizens

What all of you US citizens should do before you cast your vote for any of the presidential candidates is to watch "Zeitgeist Addendum" wich can be viewed online at :http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=7065205277695921912 or even better: download (all legally) at: http://sector.yweb.sk/Zeitgeist.Addendum.DVDRip.XviD.torrent

Actually, as long as people

Actually, as long as people keep voting for Nader and the like we will be stuck with neo-fascists like Bush and McCain. Get real, 3rd partiers. If you think the dem's aren't left wing enough, join the party enmasse and you can change the party to be more to your liking. All you get by voting for 3rd parties is absolutely ZERO representation. If we want more Howard Deans and Dennis Kucinich's, we need to vote for them. The dems would, on average be more like those two, if their constituents didn't vote for 3rd parties. Seriously, if you were a democratic politician what would be the point in pandering to the left if the left is going to stab you in the back by voting for that traitor (Nader). Those who fail to remember the past are doomed to vote for Nader.

The "Wacko's" on the right

The "Wacko's" on the right are intent on having a second Civil War! Me? I'm favoring a second Revolution to give the country to whom it belongs.. THE PEOPLE not THE GOVERNMENT!!

All isms work well. All

All isms work well. All isms are viable. All isms require the same foundation upon which to stand. There is no hope for any position that is taken with a false premise behind it. Some denounce capitalism. Some denounce socialism, or communism or for that matter fanatacism. Someone told me the truth is whatever a person says it is and that no one can really know it. If that is the truth then there is no way out of the hell we are creating for ourselves. But what if? Say, capitalism, (pick one) is defined (as a system) as the freedom to capitalize upon a good idea rather than as the freedom to take advantage of any idea or person that can net you a profit. One leads to more good and the other leads to what we are facing now. One works and the other does not. The CCCR collapsed not because it was communist but because it was corrupt and self-righteous. We are in the same condition ourselves today and there is no way out but that the people change the way they live and think and act in the world. To live in fear and greed, arrogance and debt will destroy even the greatest ism to which one may cling. We cannot vote for change. There is no change or hope for the world until I am willing to change myself. There will soon come a time when it will be dangerous to use ones own name. Already the powers that be are capable of destroying anyone they feel threatened by. It will get more dangerous for individuals who speak out. But I hope (history being the teacher) that people will use their names and not be afraid to be killed by the government for the sake of changing the way we live in the world. Do not forget that there are those who, out of fear, feel they must control the world. When God is taken out of the ism the foundation has no mortar and even the most beautiful palace or mansion built on its foundation will collapse. Watch and see. Good luck voting for change.

OK, Revolution.. I think

OK, Revolution.. I think not.. I believe that the United States is Far from a Revolution. It would only be considered a revolution if our potential leaders were strong individuals. In my honest opinion about these candidates I honestly do not believe that either candidate is strong enough to run a nation that's falling to it's knees. I know this sounds really bad by me saying this but, I don't even want to vote, because I don't like either candidate, and I honestly don't believe that either candidate will get us out of the situation that we are in! The hope is there.. hope has always been there and the need for Change, but let's be real.. Forget all the ideas of Republican or Democrat, forget black and white, we need to stop looking at all the superficial stuff and we need to have someone who, in the long run, will grow with the country.

The author confuses

The author confuses corporatism for capitalism. But this is all immaterial- our economy, our dollar, our standing in the world, will soon crash down around us.

As long as folks keep voting

As long as folks keep voting for Democrats and Republicans you will never get the change we need. Democrats will never give up the military industrial complex. Vote Green party, McKinney/Clemente in 2008

The fundamentalists are NOT

The fundamentalists are NOT saying that, and they control our government. That's why we have these problems.

The US government may make a

The US government may make a good world police, but only if it is impartial and includes white collar crime. That would mean policing all the crony capitalist McCain supporters as well. A partisan world police will never work, but will instead be the obvious military of a fascist empire. If Obama is somehow elected after all, following the celebration, he needs to be both Commander-in-Chief and Surgeon General and engage in major surgery to remove the many cancerous tumors from the dying corpus of America. And Americans must support the effort at every step or risk flatlining an experiment with so much promise and potential it will stand as the world's biggest shame, a black pit of sorrow. Emanating from the black pit will be the echoes of John McCain's hollow words about the necessity of victory. Word to John McCain: have you learned nothing?

For me I think it is time to

For me I think it is time to get off this crazy ride and even bother reading the news - what I predicted when the Soviet Union fell apart due to excessive military spending and corruption has come true, almost exactly at the time I said - give a year or two. This entire election process plus the preceding two have been nothing short of a "circus" and is now at a point it can just no longer be taken seriously if you value your sanity. How HATRED and PREJUDICE can be twisted into false PATRIOTISM and hiding behind GOD and the FLAG is nothing short of sickening. Whoever the next president will be - he/she/it sure will have one heck of a time to straighten out THIS mess because I don't see how it is possible and I sure am by nature not a pessimist. No, I am a possibility thinker but the monies spent on the Industrial Military Complex only spell one ending for me - WAR, a big one because hey, those new toys have to be tried out, even at the risk of total self-destruction and annihilation of every living thing on this planet. This is my last entry with my full name because I just don't care any longer. Have you noticed how many people enter under "anonymous" these days????????????????? ARE YOU SCARED ENOUGH YET??????????????????

Once again, Weissman

Once again, Weissman distills the 'way forward' for the next generation. Until Americans wrest control of the 'covert' budget, we are morally, and increasingly financially bankrupt.

In the end? This is not

In the end? This is not over. This election may be an important milestone, but the movement it is part of is far from over. The coming economic tragedy will require a lot of charity and even more social support, and the detractors will have to admit to a new reality. If we still use the tired martial terminology of who 'won' and 'lost', I'm not sure even those who understand this situation are ready to admit its vast scope and the social change it will require.

THE DEFACTO UNITED STATES is

THE DEFACTO UNITED STATES is a tyrannical, fascist corporation, masquerading as a de jure govt. THE UNITED STATES promotes WAR & the #1 export is worthless FRN's, which is NO LONGER desirable, due to the BUSH's policies (i.e. BUSH DOCTRINE) MAIN ST has learned that WALL ST. is UNNECESSARY & it is my SINCERE hope that the unlawful, unconstitutional FEDERAL RESERVE BANK (& THE IRS) are closed, as was 2 previous Central Banks! The Federal Reserve has proven itself unworthy & incapable of managing, handling the financial needs of the United States of America & the world! In addition, the UNITED STATES has imprisoned more people than any other country in the world. What does "pursuit of happiness" mean to you? Bottom line - the ATTORNEYS sold the people out to the BANKSTERS - who inflated the currency which caused stress on the family & destroyed the American dream. Wake Up America as we are witnessing the end of America!

Of course no presidential

Of course no presidential candidate can even whisper what he would really do faced with the reality of two potential "Vietnams" and a financial meltdown caused in part by borrow borrow borrow for those wars. But Obama (see his very sensible foreign policy statement in Foreign Affairs, August 2007) has long recognised that the US can't go on "going it alone" - there has to be a return to cooperation from the catastrophe of GW Bush's neo-conservative confrontation "for A New American Century". The key is the politically unmentionable recognition that the US is not "exceptional" (except perhaps in the ideals of its founders, as opposed to the practice of their followers). And that the US like every other imperial, or quasi imperial, power is now irrevocably on the way down. Obama's foresight, should enable him to get the US to adapt to the reality of a multi-polar world. Russia and China have offered their cooperation if the US will abandon its post-Bush totally unachievable unipolar American dream. Healthcare not warfare, "NO

Healthcare not warfare, "NO BLOOD FOR OIL" (above) Socialism for the poor not the rich. Capitalism has had it's chance and it has abused the democratic system. It's time to do what the fundamentalist said and heal the sick, feed the poor, and treat your neighbor as you would have him treat you, turn your swords into plowshares.
