GOP ticket's willingness to say anything to win ultimately damages America.

    Transcript

I have frequently insisted I would never turn the platform of the Special Comment into a regular feature. But as these last two weeks of this extraordinary, and extraordinarily disturbing, presidential campaign project out in front of us, I fear I may have to temporarily amend that presumption.

I hope it will be otherwise, but I suspect this will be the first of nightly pieces, most shorter than this until further notice. And thus a Special Comment tonight about the last five days of the divisive, ugly, paranoid bleatings of this Presidential race, culminating in the sliming of Colin Powell for his endorsement of Sen. Obama.

There was once a very prominent sportswriter named Dick Young whose work, with ever-increasing frequency, became peppered with references to "my America."

"I can't believe this is happening in My America;" "We do not tolerate these people in My America;" "This man does not belong in my America." His America gradually revealed itself.

Insular. Isolationist. Backwards-looking. Mindlessly flag-waving. Racist. No second chances. A million rules, but only for the other guy. Dick Young died in 1987, but he has been re-born in the presidential campaign as it has unfolded since last Thursday night.

In that time, Gov. Sarah Palin, Congresswoman Michelle Bachmann, McCain spokesperson Nancy Pfotenhauer, and Rush Limbaugh, have revealed that there is a measurable portion of this country that is not interested in that which the vast majority view as democracy or equality or opportunity. They want only control and they want the rest of us, symbolically, perhaps physically out.

    Gov. Palin:

"We believe that the best of America is not all in Washington D.C.," you told a fund-raiser in North Carolina last Thursday, to kick off this orgy of condescending elitism.

"We believe that the best of America is in these small towns that we get to visit, and in these wonderful little pockets of what I call the real America, being here with all of you hard working very patriotic, very pro-America areas of this great nation."

Governor, your prejudice is overwhelming. It is not just "pockets" of this country that are "pro-America" Governor. America is "pro-America. "And the "Real America" of yours, Governor, is where people at your rallies shout threats of violence, against other Americans, and you say nothing about them or to them.

What you are seeing is not patriotism, Governor. What has surrounded you since your nomination, has been the echoing shout of mob rule. Indeed, that shout has echoed to Minnesota, where the next day an unstable Congresswoman named Michele Bachmann added to the ugly cry.

"I wish the American media would take a great look at the views of the people in Congress and find out, are they pro-America, or anti-America. I think people would love to see an expose' like that."

For nearly two years, Ms. Bachmann, who made her first political bones by keeping the movie "Aladdin" from being shown at a Minnesota Charter School because she thought it promoted paganism and witchcraft, has had a seat in the government of this nation, a seat from which she has spewed the most implausible, hateful, narrow-minded garbage imaginable.

Well, Congresswoman, you have gotten that "expose'" you wanted, have you not? Though not perhaps in the way you imagined.

Since giving voice to your remarkable delusion that there are members of Congress who are "anti-America," and the extraordinary tap-dance of sleaze and innuendo about Sen. Obama which followed, the challenger for your house Seat, Elwyn Tinklenberg, has been inundated by donations - $700,000 in the three days after you spoke.

Because the America you perceive, Congresswoman with its goblins and ghosts and vast unseen hordes of traitors and fellow travelers and Senators who won't ban "Aladdin" exists only in your head, and in the heads of the others who must rationalize the failures in their own lives and of their own policies as somebody else's fault as a conspiracy to deny them an America of exclusionism and religious orthodoxy and prejudice, about which they must accuse, and murmur, and shout threats, and cleave the nation into pro-America and anti-America."

And back it comes to the McCain campaign.

And Sen. McCain's talking head, Ms. Pfotenhauer, who on this very network Saturday, and seemingly without the slightest idea that dismissive prejudice dripped from every word, analyzed the race in Virginia.

"I can tell you that the Democrats have just come in from the District of Columbia and moved into northern Virginia," she said. "But the rest of the state, 'real Virginia,' if you will, I think will be very responsive to Sen. McCain's message."

Again, a toxic message. The parts of the country that agree with Nancy Pfotenhauer are real; the others, not. Ms. Pfotenhauer, why not go the distance on this one? It was Sen. McCain's own brother who called that part of Virginia nearest Washington "communist country."

Cut to the chase, Madam. No matter the intended comic hyperbole of Joe McCain. This is the point-isn't it? Leave out the real meaning of "Communism," Madam, Joe McCain reduced it to a buzz-word; it has no more true definition right now than does "Socialism," or the phrase "a man who sees America like you and I see America."

It's about us and them. The pro and the anti. Never mind, Madam, that the bi-secting of this country you would happily inspire, means taking a tiny crack in a dam and not repairing it but burrowing into it.

It is not enough that Sen. McCain and Sen. Obama might differ. One must be real and the other false. One must be pro-America and the other anti. Go back and, as your boss Rick Davis said today, "re-think," Mr. McCain's insistence not to drag the sorry bones of Jeremiah Wright into this campaign. And whatever you do, Ms. Pfotenhauer, allow no one enough time to think about the widening crack in the dam.

And now all of this comes together to attack Colin Powell. "Secretary Powell says his endorsement is not about race," writes Rush Limbaugh, the grand wizard of this school of reactionary non-thought.

"OK, fine. I am now researching his past endorsements to see if I can find all the inexperienced, very liberal, white candidates he has endorsed. I'll let you know what I come up with." It is not conceivable that Powell might reject McCain for the politics of hate and character assassination, or just for policy.

In the closed, sweaty world of the blind allegiances of Limbaugh, one of "us" who endorses one of "them," must be doing so for some other blind allegiance, like the color of skin.

The answer to this primordial muck, must be addressed to one man only. Sen. McCain, where are you? I disagree with you on virtually every major point of policy and practice. And yet I do not think you "anti-America." I would not hesitate to join you in time of crisis in defense of this country. Fortunately you did not echo this chorus of base hatred. But neither have you repudiated it.

What is "pro-America", Senator? Is it pro-America to call a man a racist because he endorses a different candidate? Senator, you have based your campaign on many premises, but the foremost (and the most nearly admirable) of all of them, have been the pitches about "reaching across the aisle," and putting, as your ubiquitous banners reed, "country first."

So when Colin Powell endorses your opponent, you say nothing as your supporters and proxies paint him in this "Anti-America" frame and place him in Gov. Palin's un-real America. Sen. McCain, did not Gen. Powell just "reach across the aisle?" Did he not, in his own mind at least, "put country first?" Is it not your responsibility, Senator, to, if not applaud, then at least quiet those in your half of our fractured political equation?

Is it not your responsibility, Senator, to say "enough" to Republican smears without end? Is it not your responsibility, Senator, to insist that, win or lose, you will not be party to a campaign that devolves into hatred and prejudice and divisiveness? And Sen. McCain, if it is not your responsibility, whose is it?

The original transcript of

The original transcript of Gen. Powell on Meet the Press are words worth reflection, hopefully not lost on Republican-minded thinkers who can properly reevaluate what the correct terrorist response should have been to 9/11. RushL's megaphone moment, though he said the word "Race", it was intoned just like "N****r!" Yet the world heard the erudite General Powell acknowledge fearful problems about his party. Rushl lost the high ground rather than reexamine what is needed to reconstitute deeply American principles. The General says he will sit and talk to anyone. The Republican door may now be closed tight from RushL's menacing shout. Surely the General’s experience will fall on democratic ears, with greater effect for the country. Let's hope. Let's hear it for redemption.

First, to "I'm sorry if this

First, to "I'm sorry if this offends", did you not see the latest pollster? Results are in (Gallop polls as well as BBC polls), and the rest of the WORLD would prefer Obama! So much for the worry on our "failed reputation". If we are going to solidify relations with the rest of the world, I think these are definitely opinions to be considered. Also, I don't see the downside for Obama's "spread the wealth" proposition. So a small, small percentage of Americans wouldn't benefit from this... so WHAT?! Since when is the American dream just for a few? REGARDLESS of the fact that there is equal opportunity, and even if everyone could go to college; not everyone can be a doctor, or the owner of a fortune 500 company. SOMEONE has to serve the food, SOMEONE has to pick up the garbage, and SOMEONE has to teach the children! Why in the world do these people deserve less?! The extremities of wealth and poverty are sick, and the rich have proven time and again that they won't share it, so we'll TAKE it!

I grew up in "Fake Virginia"

I grew up in "Fake Virginia" (Fairfax County); my parents are from "Real Virginia" (Portsmouth and Richmond). I resent having a candidate come into my home state and try to divide us. We are ALL Virginians, and I will throw down against anyone who comes in to score cheap political points by trying to pit us against each other.

I'm sorry if this offends

I'm sorry if this offends many on this forum, but the hypocrisy of Olberman is too much. The only time Keith Olberman does not utter condescending, derogatory, and divisive words is when he's drooling over Obama. If one truthfully looks at the facts of what has been said on both sides of the aisle during this campaign, almost 100% of the people mentioning race during this whole campaign has been the Democrats and Obama himself. Every criticism of Obama is being deflected as "racist". Some are saying "socialist" is a code word for "black" now. I'm beginning to wonder if this country isn't still racist, but it's flipped aisles. Most conservatives are scared to death of Obama not because of the color of his skin but the color of his beliefs. Whether you like it or not, some of those beliefs and close associations with people that hold those beliefs make it debatable whether Obama is Anti American! It's a shame that most of the Democrat establishment had to root for a failed Iraq mission, failed economy, and failed American reputation abroad. They knew they had to root against American in order to win this Presidency. Beware of what we're asking for as a nation, we just may elect dictator like Putin or Chavez to solve all our own problems and become like the rest of the world. You think it's hard to get ahead in the greatest country on earth? try it in a truly socialist economy. The difference is that no one gets ahead except the politicians and the media elite.

It's not that many

It's not that many Republicans don't love America, it's just that they cannot stand Americans.

I AM A "REAL AMERICAN". And

I AM A "REAL AMERICAN". And my"REAL AMERICAN" registered Independent vote is going to the Democratic nominees this November 4th! A BIG thanks to Sarah Palin and her uninformed, ignorant, negative comments for helping me to make up my mind.

First, the tactic now is the

First, the tactic now is the same as Bush's drumbeat for the Iraq war. Then you were not a patriot if you did not fall into line. Now you are anti-American. Give me a break. Second, enough with "Black'. Obama is mixed race, the same as almost everyone else in America.

Back at the beginning of the

Back at the beginning of the Democratic primary contest I favored Sen. Biden for two reasons: he sounded more informed and wise about foreign relations and, pertinent to saying anything to get elected, he pretty much said what he thought--that trait that gets him in trouble. He doesn't filter. I think he's to be admired, but in this day of snipping out the soundbites, good and bad, an unfiltered remark can cost you votes. When that race narrowed to two, I favored Sen. Obama because he seemed to more nearly resemble Sen. Biden in his critical thinking. Sen. Clinton, on the other hand, seemed to more than just fine tune her positions, she seemed guilty of saying whatever it took to win the nomination. Now that we're down to the main event in this endless race for the presidency, it's fair to say that both candidates will say many things to appeal to as many segments of the population as possible. It is an inevitable sin of politicians, just as narcissism is an inevitable sin of celebrities. There is a difference, however, in defaming your opponent and in using the latest technology to superfine tune your message. Sen. McCain is like President Bush in my sentiments: they both make me profoundly sad that politics in our country has become so shallow, so insincere, so--to use the current cant--toxic. My memory goes back a long way. Everett Dirksen, Lister Hill, Robert Taft, Tip O'Neill, Patrick Moynihan--none of these men stooped so low. Even Dick Tuck's dirty tricks (he, the teacher of Tricky Dick, alas) wasn't as mean-spirited in his antics. He meant to flummox the opposing candidate, not villify him. I hope that there will be a rebirth of hard-hitting but civil politics in the next four years. The last few weeks have been ugly and shameful.

I'm SO grateful for the

I'm SO grateful for the brilliant and eloquent Keith Olbermann. I thank him for standing up to the despicable fear and hate-mongering that's being used manipulate ignorant voters. I now will send this video and transcript to those who might benefit!

Thank you, Keith Olbermann,

Thank you, Keith Olbermann, for always being a voice of reason in a sea of hysterical Republicans. The Republicans are running so scared now that they're tripping all over themselves and putting their foot in it to the degree that they're coming across as cartoons. The flipflopper John McCain, the intellectually challenged Sara Palin, the bigoted Michelle Bachmann, the snob Nancy Pfotenhauer, and the drug-damaged Rush Limbaugh can't muster up enough brain power to equal the IQ of a brussels sprout. I think the public is finally getting wise to these fraudulent individuals, too, and I for one, feel privileged to watch their downfall. It's about time.

Bravo, Mr. Olberman. You

Bravo, Mr. Olberman. You are so right, and it is sad that those who need to hear this, won't. When the other day as Senator Obama was visiting a diner or cafe shaking hands, a woman shouted "terrorist" at him and refused his calm offer of a handshake, I thought again about the divisiveness of this campaign, and about the cynical twisting of truth. Such overt hatred and mean-spiritedness are neither Christian nor American, yet the Republicans continue to play the patriotism card and insist that they are truly Christian. We need a leader who can help us move beyond this hatred and exclusivism, and Barack Obama is the person to do that.

Notice that Sarah Palin does

Notice that Sarah Palin does not ever speak one line of solid policy, nor address what's wrong with the country, but merely attacks Obama and the Democrats. She's nothing but a glorified cheerleader and smearist. She's not capable of more, thus she resorts to her only strength: trying to smear others. This so reminds me of high school, except the fate of the free world is at stake. Keep speaking for True America Mr. Olbermann.

Olbermann is supposed to be

Olbermann is supposed to be a dangerous "liberal". Yet what Americans are facing is the consequence of a Presidency where the Chief Executive refers to the Constitution as "Just a goddamn piece of paper" on three occasions. Limbaugh is a shock propagandist attempting to give credibility to the first anti-Constitutional Presidency and in McCain and Palin the first anti-Constitutional candidates for the Presidency. Americans Beware.

Bloody Well Right, but KO

Bloody Well Right, but KO gives away too much. The stubborn, scared Conservative streak is a madness which infects really only about a 30 % or so of the electorate, not the half KO mentions, "Senator, to, if not applaud, then at least quiet those in your [HALF] of our fractured political equation? . [P] People, we need to become involved in our own government. It is an awesome responsibility, but we have seen the results of leaving our jobs as citizens un-attended. We must become involved; it's more than just voting. I, until recently have been contributing $ post news item. I hate that political merit is decided by dollars, making freedom of speech a commodity. Please, people, the answer is when we come together to help each other and get involved in what is supposed to be our government. [P] Respect.

Here is the test : you sit

Here is the test : you sit in front of Sarah Palin and Colin Powell. You have 30 seconds for each of either to list ten qualities each is known to represent. Do the maths. Precise and rapid application of nail polish does not qualify.

Truer words have never been

Truer words have never been spoken! Should the day ever come that MSNBC loses Keith Olbermann or Rachel Maddow there will be Heavy Bitching & Gnashing of Teeth!

Hmm. . . a white, liberal,

Hmm. . . a white, liberal, inexperienced politician that Colin Powell could endorse. Early Abe Lincoln, maybe?

thank you as always again

thank you as always again and again... For weeks I have been saying that Obama seeks to inspire while McCain and Palin seek only to incite. so true. it's truly over for them. it is in fact a new earth. We the people are not broken and will make the choice, because we can. thank you again...

Bravo, Mr.Olbermann! Just as

Bravo, Mr.Olbermann! Just as Joseph McCarthy was finally knocked off his pedestal in the 50's by the words of those who were unafraid to stand up to a bully, so you have done with Sarah Palin, Rush Limbaugh, Michelle Bachmann, Nancy Pfotenhauer; finally, a good man has answered the call of Edmund Burke. Many, many thanks for you courage.

I don't think that the

I don't think that the people to whom Mr. Olbermann is directing his thoughts are capable of understanding them. The people who have the strongest link to the rightwing are authoritarian to the bone and are incapable of conceptualizing a system where people can plan their own lives. They feel that someone has to be in charge and tell (force) other people to subject themselves to some particular code of conduct. In their case it is often a warped religious code that is used as a cover for their own control freak tendencies. This explains most of their attitudes such as an adherence to creationism, rejection of human responsibility for global warming, their support for fascist government control, etc. They pay lip service to free markets, but actually believe in monopolies and don't believe in maintaining level playing fields.

Some thing Missing in their

Some thing Missing in their Diet? How can they Possibly still crave for More? Will the Super Powerful & Super Rich end up Moving to France once the U.S. reaches its Total Collapse? & then what will the headlines read? Will they still blame the Democrats?

In the eyes of the Rush

In the eyes of the Rush Lambaughs, Nancy Pfotenhauers, Michelle Bachmanns and Sarah Palins of the world, Powell's endorsement of Obama is anti-American: It was thoughtful, well-considered and logical, which is one of the reasons righties are so fond of quoting Blaise Pascal. They believe that their racist, exclusionary, fundamentally anti-democratic view of the world can be excused by the very fact that they believe in it whole-heartedly. Theirs is the tautology of fascism.

There should be a Thousand

There should be a Thousand Cries of Outrage over this! How Bad, how Obvious, does it have to get? Yesterday I talked politics with an upper middle classed friend of 30 + years who mentioned he now has to teach Machine Safety Classes to Supplement his Supervisory Salary, & will not retire 'till he's 80 due to his Lost 401 K 'etc.'. I reminded him when he told me years ago that he "Was going to have to Vote for bush." I then reminded him that John Kerry Is & was a True War Veteran that after being wounded returned to battle, & fought to the end of our stay in Nam. Only to get "Swift Boated" for his Patriotic Service! And that it is Criminal for those responsible to "Change Their Story," Lie, & Slander a True Documented War Veteran in the name of Politics! His "educated" reply: "He Never Got Wounded! Those Purple Hearts Weren't even His! & You Can't believe a Damn Thing he Ever Said! I Hate the SOB!" This from an Army Vet. that quit High School, that worked his way up from the bottom, to Supervisor, that Teaches for a Noble Cause! As expected I got No Answer as to where he gets his Information, or if he could Show me some Proof. Hatred & Prejudice are Instilled @ an Early Age! & Now more than Ever are made Popular & Exeptible among the Sheep, & the "Educated" as well! Watch the R's find Out Rage should Obama be "Allowed" to claim His Victory!

In my view Rush Limbaugh is

In my view Rush Limbaugh is dangerously anti American. He is aperson who rejects freedom of speech and is intolerant of diverse views. He does not support sepration of church and state which is against our constituion and protects citizens from allowing reglion to be used as a weapon to divide the nation and distract people from life threatening issues. Separation of church and state also protects people from giving one religion power over others. He is a racist and although I think he should be allowed to express his views our media has not given equal opportunity to all sides which is so impotant in educating our people for their protection. I think the people have finally gotten it. What is most important to people is a government in which the represeantatives we elect work for us and our interests. I think that really Rush Limbaugh's agenda is to divid the people and fill as many as he can with hate, distortion and misinformation. All I can say is thank you Mr. Olbermann.

The Republican Party is all

The Republican Party is all about racism. Since Nixon first formulated the "Southern strategy" after President Lyndon Johnson "sold out" the whites with the voting rights act, it has always been about race. Reagan played the race card very effectively with his phony call for "states rights" which is really double speak for let the George Wallace's and Strom Thurmonds run their states any way they choose without interference from the US government. Bush has just taken it to another level with the gutting of the Justice Department and virtually shutting down any voting rights support at the federal level. When the government bails out white bankers while sending people of color to die disproportionally for the oil and gas companies in Afghanistan and Iraq this is institutionalizing racism.

Thank you for this well

Thank you for this well written opinion. It makes me wonder, "In whose interests, really, is it to see Americans divided?"

I wish someone would

I wish someone would reference what Jesus is said to have said in the 4 gospels. They are short repetitive documents that leave no room for this kind of stuff. Perhaps start with Matthew, the Sermon on the Mount.

Well, this one nails it,

Well, this one nails it, Keith. If you want to know why McCain keeps slipping in the polls, look no further than the PR track laid out here by Mr. Olbermann. Watch FOX News some evening and see how included you feel. It's completely set up to make you feel a part of something or excluded from something. You couldn't be further from Fair & Balanced if you tried. But most Americans don't want to hate their neighbor, and that's where the GOP has lost touch with the real Republicans out here. Good luck, Senator McCain and Governor Palin... you're gonna need it by the bucket full.

This is John McCain's last

This is John McCain's last chance to be POTUS and that's his ambition. Sadly, he has 'sold he soul' to the GOP right to realize this ambition and now it's too late to turn back. He's doomed. We can only hope our country isn't.

I've often wondered if Kieth

I've often wondered if Kieth is merely preaching to the choir with his special comments, because they are so good and yet those to whom I know he is directing them, seem never to change or acknowledge the rightness of his words. Never mind Kieth, this American wants to hear what you have to say. Thank You for being there.

I signed a censure petition

I signed a censure petition against Bachmann the other day. Do you know of a petition to censure Palin? By the way—it has been roughly 2000 days now that I have been a fan and dedicated watcher of Countdown. Go Keith!

Hats off to Mr. Olbermann,

Hats off to Mr. Olbermann, truth at its best! Let em have it!! Some times truth hurts, doesn't Mr. McCane.

Thank you for taking a

Thank you for taking a stand. Thank you for being indignant in the face of turgid policies of the right wing who go on without accountability. Thank you for speaking out.

I believe the correct number

I believe the correct number for the amount of campaign contributions Mr. Tinklenberg received after Rep. Bachmann's rant is $700,000, not $7,000 as appears above.
