Catching Up With the Crazy

So, I got married two weekends ago, and spent all of last week honeymooning with my wife in front of a stone fireplace in a tiny cabin by a tiny lake in the woods of New Hampshire. No cell phone reception; no TV channels because the tube was still hooked up to an analog antenna on the roof that looked to have been there since the Truman administration; no internet access whatsoever; the only newspapers to be found were at the end of several miles of a rutted, rock-strewn, dirt road, and since neither of us felt particularly compelled to deal with anything except each other, my wife and I pretty much fell completely off the planet.

Coming home, in retrospect, may have been an egregious tactical error on my part. One hour of television news, one hour of reading last week's news dispatches, made me want to pile back into the car and race back to that cabin, where the only stupidity was self-inflicted and the only crazy was the flight pattern of the bats snatching insects off the top of the lake.

"Balloon Boy"? Seriously? Even after the whole spectacle of a boy named after a bird allegedly flying across Colorado in a giant Jiffy-Pop canister was exposed as a hoax, even after all the major news networks found out beyond all dispute that they had all been punked by some erstwhile reject from a bad reality show, they kept showing it, and showing it, and showing it. The father, who apparently masterminded this sad farce, is likely going to get creamed on several fronts - financially and legally for openers - and deservedly so, because as we all know, the states are in dire economic distress and cannot spare fiscal resources to chase down unmanned (unboyed?) floating popcorn bulbs ... but with two wars, health care reform, bank reform, Iranian stress, bombs, death and general mayhem breaking loose all over the joint, one would think the TV guys would choose to focus on something besides an incident that made them all look like absolute fools.

Ha. What am I thinking? Cover the news? Things haven't changed that much in a week.

The Republican Party did its part last week to make sure everyone in America got their USDA recommended daily allowance of dumb by rolling out a new RNC web site that became an immediate first-ballot entrant into the Unintentional Comedy Hall of Fame. For openers, when the site was unveiled, a prominent link to "Future GOP Leaders" when clicked, led to a page reading, "404 Error: This page could not be found."

The rest of the site is riddled with pictures of black people and women, two groups that tend to vote for GOP candidates about as often as water gets turned into wine at weddings. The page dedicated to the history of the party was filled with references to great 19th century accomplishments - the Trans-Continental Railroad and the ending of slavery were most prominently displayed - put the 20th century pickings were, understandably, pretty slim. Best of all, the page dedicated to Ronald Reagan referred to him as "Ronaldus Magnus," which, loosely translated, means "Ronald the Great."

    Yeah. That happened.

RNC Chairman Michael Steele covered himself in glory last Wednesday in comments regarding President Obama's health care reform. I could try to describe this myself, but Josh Marshall over on Talking Points Memo pretty much nailed it better than I or anyone else could: "In response to press reports saying that the health care reform train is leaving the station with President Obama at the wheel (or whatever you use to run a train), Michael Steele just told Fox to look out because he is a 'cow on the tracks.'" In other words, in addition to his other shortcomings, Steele is apparently unschooled on the history of train/cow confrontations, though I'm not sure it's a metaphor Democrats will necessarily want to dispute. Later, in a new strike in his ongoing war with his own dignity, Steele pleaded for a 'Rodney King moment' on health care."

    Moo.

The Democrats, for their part, were not about to let a bunch of disorganized, technologically-challenged, Republican bovines corner the market on stupidity, apparently. Feel free to check my math on this, but I'm pretty sure a Democrat won the White House by a significant margin, Democrats control three-fifths of the Senate, and Democrats hold a similarly large margin in the House ... and yet the GOP seems to be totally in control of the current health care debate, to the point that the very popular "Public Option" is about to be abandoned by the side of the road like a puppy everyone loves, but refuses to be responsible for. Yes, yes, the insurance companies are strong, the GOP is better at message maintenance, and most of the TV news networks have gone to great pains to sabotage the debate.

But you are in charge, Democrats. You have the votes. As Truthout writer Scott Galindez explained on Monday, "Sen. Olympia Snowe (R-Maine) voted for the weakest of the five health care bills passed by Congressional committees. Big deal. If the bill that goes to the Senate floor is weak enough for her to vote for, then the insurance companies will win and the American people will lose ... I really hope the Democrats get it. I hope this attempt at getting bipartisan support was all show, and the Democrats stop worrying about getting GOP support. The label 'party of no' is not new for them. They opposed FDR's New Deal (including Social Security), Johnson's Great Society (including Medicare). Republican support is not needed, and, at this point, let them be on the wrong side of history as they have been on most great reform legislation."

Smartest thing I've seen all week.

And the illusion continues

And the illusion continues that somehow there are differences in political parties when it comes to payoffs, bribes and corruption. In the last great Depression you had folks climbing poles at great heights - that was fantastic entertainment. Was anyone down and out enough to consider their country a completely failed corporate state, working tirelessly *to ensure* the misery of millions, while alledging that reform and recovery are just over the horizon?

First, Congratulations on

First, Congratulations on your marriage! Second, 'hear hear' to every single thing you've written (I'm a big fan of your columns). I've been appalled at the democrats behavior since January 20th; they've been a big disappointment. Are any of them even awake!?!?!? This is just more of the same spineless and wimpy 'let's try to please everyone' act. It's tiresome and now, at this point, it's endangering those who were promised healthcare reform. Shame on them! Third, thank you and keep up the great work!!!

Oh come on. Democrats,

Oh come on. Democrats, Republicans, they're both POLITICIANS. Professional liars and con-artists. If anyone thinks the one party is better than the other better stop drinking the Kool-Aid. This country is run by corporations(who's soul reason for existence is profit), and a few megalomaniacs who want to control the world(for their own personal gain, not because they want to end world suffering). If the Democrats were serious, we would have health reform where everybody is covered, not for profits, just care for the people of this country, already. But we don't. Um, connect the dots.

Congratulations William!! I

Congratulations William!! I also went on a week vacation to a secluded lake, Lake Ozette, at the beginning of October. It was so refreshing to be away from all the Crazy and to find what really matters in life. Compassion for yourself and those around you, regardless of their political origins or other differences that divide us these days. Compassion for those around me is what drives me to push for a Public Option. I can see nothing more urgent for the USA.

Congatulations on your

Congatulations on your marriage and thank you for the latest run down on the state of the media.

Democrats, Republicans,

Democrats, Republicans, they're both POLITICIANS. Professional liars and con-artists.

Yes. Yet, Americans continue to elect politicians, rather than leaders, into office year in and year out. It seems that stupidity is not limited to that most base subset of the human species.

Welcome back and

Welcome back and congratulations Mr. Pitt. I know the temptation to abandon the insanity, but your good sense is needed.

We're in the Republic of

We're in the Republic of Ireland for the semester reading about all the stupid remarks both the Republicans and Democrats are making about a public option on health care. The Irish have a public option. From talking with people here, it's not the best, but at least all Irish folk have some level of health care. Our congress people have a public option, but apparently they don't find it worthwhile to share it with most Americans. Perhaps they feel their health care will be diluted by sharing it with the rest of us. Keep up the articles and congrats of choosing NH for your week of r and r. We live near "Golden Pond".

Hola from Cancun, Mexico.

Hola from Cancun, Mexico. Congratulations on your marriage. You should write a weekly news summary like this one every week

Congratulations William on

Congratulations William on your marriage! I would like to be cabin in New Hampshire with my deceased New England husband, a small newspaper publisher who wouldn't believe the world today. I am a fan of yours. Regards,

Thanks for the gallows humor.

Thanks for the gallows humor.

Congratulations, William,

Congratulations, William, for retaining the good sense to take advantage of your vacation time in such a great fashion. You neglected to mention your bride's name, but I sure can appreciate your caution. Who knows...some things are better kept private, right? Believe me, you missed nothing at all by escaping for those two weeks. You could have written your column from wherever you were and you would have lost nothing in the telling. We know that we never get any real news, anyway....only what the Powers-that-be feel like throwing out here to us ..just to keep us pacified. We have become satisfied with so little after being on such a restricted diet for the past Decade.

Civility above Country and all that , you know.

When are a lot of people

When are a lot of people going to see that lobbying = bribery????

Congrats dude & dudette

Congrats dude & dudette Pitt...all one need do is reflect back to roller derby days and traveling carnivals to know the 2 party system(in public) is a single brothel whether bearing the I...D or R brand these whores are there for one reason to f*** us and if one half of the team folds they all go the way of the do-do bird PERIOD!

As much as i agree with the

As much as i agree with the Chomskyesk sentiment that very often the parties seem to be two slightly different versions of the same ruling corporatist elite, sometimes even the small differences can make a huge difference in people's lives. The Democrats are clearly on the right side of history on the health care debate, and the ones in the party pushing for real reform need all the support they can get.

Capitalism is a religion to

Capitalism is a religion to some people, Bill. Social democrats are like apostates in the hands of an angry inquisition. Just as they are about to be impaled, they recant, crying "I believe in the right of the corporation to lie, cheat, steal and start wars in the name of the Great God Greed!" Even Obama. May your marriage bring you and your bride happiness. If only we could all go on a retreat and get back in touch with the silence that stills the heart. Meanwhile, may the battering rams of Truthout keep hammering the false creeds into dust and the clamor of intellectual war go on until everyone sees that "conservatism" is just another cult requiring its members to drink the kool-aid of human sacrifice.

Confetti! to - as Windskull

Confetti! to - as Windskull so ably put it: "Dude and Dudette Pitt"! If we promise to leave you two alone two weeks per year (you do belong to TNG now, eh?), you won't leave us forlorn? FinC

Like it or not Ralph has

Like it or not Ralph has always been right. There is no difference between the Democan or Republicrat party, except there are a few more willing to defend a women's right to choose which is no small thing. When it comes to enacting a meaningful healthcare for all (read singlepayer) in which it is clear the Rupublicans are irrelevant, it is a non starter. Because they are cut from the same cloth and funded at the same trough. When it comes time to fulfill the promise to bring out troops home from Iraq, again the Rupublicans are irrelevant, it is a non starter. Because they are cut from the same cloth and funded at the same trough. And when it is clear only empires that wish to die do so in Afghanistan, more of the same. Definition of Democrat and Republican: A pack of thieves masquerading ad public servants.

Congratulations,

Congratulations, William. ||Ther is a difference between the two parties. The problem is with what they have in common. The problem is, the most important thing is to get reelected. This means raising money for elections is primary. As a result we have the best government that money can buy. That makes for lousy government.

What do people expect from

What do people expect from the Democratic Party that died in Dallas with JFK, organized labor, and Democracy itself. We've had a corportist dictatorship ever since. And remember, Mussolini preferred to call fascism--"corportism." At age 72, I'm glad to see so many people waking up to this truth. And I, too, am a big fan of William Rivers Pitt as well as Ralph Nader.

Congrats. The cabin sounds

Congrats. The cabin sounds wonderful. The best thing you can do for your sanity is stop reading and watching what passes for the news. Cronkite is gone, along with objectivity, honesty and ethics. As to the Dems - maybe they are tyring to govern as opposed to rule and we have simply forgotten what it felt like to ask all to get involved in determining the course of the country. That the conservatives continue to refuse to participate is their issue, but the Dems should continue to treat the whole country as that to be governed. I think most people recognized the conservative policy of "you are either with us or the enemy" did not work.
