200,000 voter registrations in Ohio conflict with other records.

The White House has asked the Department of Justice to look into whether 200,000 new Ohio voters must reconfirm their registration information before Nov. 4, taking up an issue that Republicans and Democrats in the battleground state have been fighting over in court for weeks.

The voter names are in dispute because their registration information conflicts with other official data.

The action comes a week after the U.S. Supreme Court dismissed a case brought by the Ohio Republican Party over the same issue. Republicans have argued that the mismatched information could signal fraudulent registrations, but Democrats have countered that eligible voters could be knocked off the rolls over discrepancies as minor as a transposed number in an address or birth date.

President Bush yesterday asked Attorney General Michael B. Mukasey to review concerns over the voters raised by House Minority Leader John A. Boehner (R-Ohio).

Boehner wrote to Bush yesterday, saying, "I strongly urge you to direct Attorney General Mukasey and the Department of Justice to act." Boehner said in his letter that if the voters remain on the rolls without added checks, "there is a significant risk if not a certainty, that unlawful votes will be cast and counted."

In a news release, Boehner said that a letter he had sent Monday to Mukasey on the matter did not receive a reply. Boehner has asked Mukasey to order Ohio's Democratic Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner to make it easier for county elections officials to access the state list of mismatched voters. Brunner has argued that would require reprogramming election computers and would create chaos in the days before the election.

White House press secretary Dana Perino characterized Bush's referral of the matter to Justice as a routine step that would be taken for any such request from a congressional leader.

Voting rights advocates, however, immediately raised concerns. "This is taking the politicization of this to a new level, and the last thing we need is for the elections officials and voters of Ohio to be put in a chaotic situation in the last days before the election," said Jon Greenbaum of the Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law.

The voters' registrations have been at the heart of a dispute between the Ohio Republican Party and Brunner.

Information for the new voters does not match state driver's license or Social Security records. Federal law demands that states have a computerized database to check the records, but leaves it to states to determine what constitutes a match and what to do with mismatches. Voters who have not resolved discrepancies by Nov. 4 could be forced to cast provisional ballots, which are counted only if their registration information can be cleared up.

Brunner this week directed local elections boards not to eliminate voters solely on a mismatch, and yesterday issued orders urging boards not to force voters to use provisional ballots over minor issues.

"The statewide voter database was never intended to be a litmus test for voter eligibility," said Jeff Ortega, a spokesman for Brunner. "Every Ohioan must provide ID to prove their identity before their vote is counted. Ohioans can be completely confident in our preparations for a successful November election."

Ohio Sen. Sherrod Brown (D) said he was "disappointed that the president chose to interject partisan politics into the election. My confidence in Secretary Brunner's work remains unchanged."

Intervention on election matters has been a troubling issue at the Department of Justice and figured in the controversy over the firing of nine U.S. attorneys in 2006.

We only obey the Supreme

We only obey the Supreme Court decisions we like.

What a load of crap! Why

What a load of crap! Why don't they send the DOJ to investigate all those HACKED voting machines that are registering incorrect selections? But of coarse not, since those machines are changing the votes from Obama to McCain. Why would the White House want to investigate that? Instead they waste our tax dollars on more of then same.

There's an obvious cure for

There's an obvious cure for this crisis -- we could get every neonate tattooed with name, DOB, newly issued SSN, basic features, etc. Of course, within a year or so eye color would be different, which would require a correction added to the tattoo. Later in life, a female getting married would need an addendum if she chose to change her surname. That could be repeated for each subsequent marriage. But hey, what's a little trouble, pain and expense, so long as we prove our identity to satisfy every Republican challenge?

I didn't know Bush was

I didn't know Bush was trying for a third term!

Desperate times call for

Desperate times call for desparate measures. This should come as no surprise and we should expect much more in the days to come. Early voting is showing even more trouble for the GOP, flailing in the tarpit of its own making: oil and war and dark fears. It will soon be only bones in a museum.

Marshall Law next!

Marshall Law next!

I agree with "Enough of this

I agree with "Enough of this nonsense!" We should demand investigations into the early reports of voting machines registering McCain in Fla, etc. How about an on-line petition that we could sign and send to our Congress and the Justice Department. If someone organizes it--I will surely distribute the site through my email colleagues and friends. b hart

If Obama takes MI, PA,

If Obama takes MI, PA, and(!) OH then McCain only has a 2% chance of winning the election. They know this and are acting accordingly. They cannot afford to lose OH.

The election has already

The election has already been stolen. Watch video and understand. http://tpzoo.wordpress.com/2008/09/30/stephen-spoonamore-2008-interview-paper-ballots-please/ There is still some time of offset the possibility of this election being stolen. VOTE EARLY AND IN HUGE NUMBERS. OBAMA/BIDEN, READY, ABLE AND EXPERIENCED.

I am expecting anything! I

I am expecting anything! I remember that these are the same people who stole Florida and Ohio before and are not bothered by pangs of conscience. At what point, though does the United States stop looking like a democracy?

I vote absentee ballot now

I vote absentee ballot now because - when I used to vote in person I would always get questioned whether I was the actual person that the polling person had on their roster because my telephone number did not match. This was in spite of the fact that I would renew my voter registration online and update my phone number. Apparently the telephone number was not updated in spite of my online udateing procedure. This happened in Seattle Washington from the date of 1987 - 1992. Is this dumb and dumber or what??? Also, are the people that get my absentee ballot correctly recording the actual people that I vote for??? I think there is voter fraud in every state and the public should be getting mad about it. PS: I am a registered Democrat.

Ain't Dubya asking the DOJ

Ain't Dubya asking the DOJ to come in and take a look at this a little like asking extraterrestrials to continue returning to earth and performing their widely heralded and proclaimed National Enquirer and Saturday Night Live abductions and subsequent colonoscopys?

OH! and where was Boehner

OH! and where was Boehner when lawful votes were cast and NOT counted?

Making up your own rules

Making up your own rules again Mr.Bush? DOJ Bush henchmen now trump the Supreme Court????

These republicans are NOT

These republicans are NOT going to give up their hold on power without a fight. Hook or by crook they will do whatever has worked before and even try to pull out some new gadgetry such as this to gain an edge. After all, there will be no challenge from the Attorney General Gestapo as they are taking orders from hitl... uh w himself and dick.

If McCain "wins", we will

If McCain "wins", we will know they cheated! Successfully! Again! And what will we be able to do about it? Nothing? Again?

And Stone made bush

And Stone made bush sympathetic in W? Fascism is knocking 'MY FRIENDS' as whining complaining Mccain gets his Bush friends to see if the DOJ can trump the Supreme Court... Enough is Enough

House Minority Leader John

House Minority Leader John A. Boehner I know you're supposed to say "Bayner", but I don't. They're cheaters. 2000, 2002, 2004. If they cheat this time, and McCain wins despite the overwhelming poll numbers, even the MSM will report that something funny is up. Turn out in big numbers and vote. Pressure congress to resolve this issue. No more electronic voting. And we need to change this ridiculous "check the database" clause of the HAVA. This nonsense has gone on way to long.

I live and work right in the

I live and work right in the middle of all this Ohio Shenanigans- My head is going to explode! The GOP are accusing the Dems of doing all the things that they did in 2000 and 2004 although the Ohio Secretary of State has done nothing but try to make up for all the corruption under Kenneth Blackwell- who by the way is involved with The Buckeye Institute, who is trying to get ACORNS's 503 (c) status taken away. These slimy republicans are so anti-American, anti-liberty and anti-constitution and at the same time they are accusing others of just that. It's maddening! As Bob Dylan said, "judgment on them is something well never see." But I must keep hope in my heart that the tyranny of evil men will soon be merely a painful memory.

That saurian look on

That saurian look on Boehner's face tells all. Still, it does amaze me that people will succumb to voter registration drives, giving out private information to someone they do not know, rather than considering it as important as getting a drivers license and having to visit the Dept. of MV to do so.

It looks like the GOP is

It looks like the GOP is trying to steal Ohio. I am also worried about Pennsylvania since there is no early polling in Pennsy. These righ wing fanatics are like a cancer which wont go away.

I used to work for the

I used to work for the social security administration, and I can tell you with authority that the social security database is very unreliable when it comes to names. For instance, mismatches between the names on state driver licenses and social security records occur all the time. These mismatches can usually be resolved fairly easily, but it takes time to update the records. I am sure the republicans in Ohio and Georgia are well aware of this. Requiring an exact match, so close to the election, with no time to correct the records, is blatant voter suppression, pure and simple. The republicans will stop at nothing in order to win. They are knowingly attempting to disenfranchise voters. What a disgrace !!

Ohio has had 4 years to

Ohio has had 4 years to clean up their election system! WTF? Apparently Republicans are happy with Ohio's voting apparatus. It works just fine from their perspective. What a national disgrace!
