Sarah Palin Blamed by the US Secret Service Over Death Threats Against Barack Obama

Sarah Palin's attacks on Barack Obama's patriotism provoked a spike in death threats against the future president, Secret Service agents revealed during the final weeks of the campaign.

Sarah Palin's attacks on Barack Obama's patriotism provoked a spike in death threats against the future president, Secret Service agents revealed during the final weeks of the campaign.

The Republican vice presidential candidate attracted criticism for accusing Mr Obama of "palling around with terrorists", citing his association with the sixties radical William Ayers.

The attacks provoked a near lynch mob atmosphere at her rallies, with supporters yelling "terrorist" and "kill him" until the McCain campaign ordered her to tone down the rhetoric.

But it has now emerged that her demagogic tone may have unintentionally encouraged white supremacists to go even further.

The Secret Service warned the Obama family in mid October that they had seen a dramatic increase in the number of threats against the Democratic candidate, coinciding with Mrs Palin's attacks.

Michelle Obama, the future First Lady, was so upset that she turned to her friend and campaign adviser Valerie Jarrett and said: "Why would they try to make people hate us?"

The revelations, contained in a Newsweek history of the campaign, are likely to further damage Mrs Palin's credentials as a future presidential candidate. She is already a frontrunner, with Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal, to take on Mr Obama in four years time.

Details of the spike in threats to Mr Obama come as a report last week by security and intelligence analysts Stratfor, warned that he is a high risk target for racist gunmen. It concluded: "Two plots to assassinate Obama were broken up during the campaign season, and several more remain under investigation. We would expect federal authorities to uncover many more plots to attack the president that have been hatched by white supremacist ideologues."

Irate John McCain aides, who blame Mrs Palin for losing the election, claim Mrs Palin took it upon herself to question Mr Obama's patriotism, before the line of attack had been cleared by Mr McCain.

That claim is part of a campaign of targeted leaks designed to torpedo her ambitions, with claims that she did not know that Africawas a continent rather than a country.

The advisers have branded her a "diva" and a "whack job" and claimed that she did not know which other countries are in the North American Free Trade Area, (Canada and Mexico). They say she spent more than $150,000 on designer clothes, including $40,000 on her husband Todd and that she refused to prepare for the disastrous series of interviews with CBS's Katie Couric.

In a bid to salvage her reputation Mrs Palin came out firing in an interview with CNN, dismissing the anonymous leakers in unpresidential language as "jerks" who had taken "questions or comments I made in debate prep out of context."

She said: "I consider it cowardly. It's not true. That's cruel, it's mean-spirited, it's immature, it's unprofessional and those guys are jerks if they came away taking things out of context and then tried to spread something on national news that's not fair and not right."

She was not asked about her incendiary rhetoric against Mr Obama. But she did deny the spending spree claims, saying the clothes in question had been returned to the Republican National Committee. "Those are the RNC's clothes, they're not my clothes. I asked for anything more than maybe a diet Dr Pepper once in a while. These are false allegations."

Speaking as she returned to her native Alaska, Mrs Palin claimed to be baffled by what she claims was sexism on the national stage. "Here in Alaska that double standard isn't applied because these guys know that Alaskan women are pretty tough, on a par with the men in terms of being outdoors, working hard," she said.

"They're commercial fishermen, they're pilots, they're working up on the North slope in the oil fields. You see equality in Alaska. I think that was a bit of as surprise on the national level."

Palin should not even run

Palin should not even run for the position of janitor for Alaska. If the Republican leadership decide she is the best to head their party , then I can simply say goodbye Republican party. This will be the best thing that will happen to the democrats comes 2012. Thanks AJ

I guess we have a real

I guess we have a real scapegoat here, a Typhoid Sarah who has brought major disease to the Republican Party. Spare me. From the stuff I've been seeing in unwanted e-mails for quite some time, Palin's campaign rhetoric was pretty tame. Unfortunately, she became just one more affirmation of racist attitudes amongst the functional feeble-minded of our society.

The shoe hurts when it is on

The shoe hurts when it is on the other foot, eh, Sarah?

The issue is not her -- the

The issue is not her -- the issue is US: Where were YOU when Sarah Palin was evoking death shouts? Did you protest? Did you contact your Republican friends asking them to tone it down? Did you write to your paper? Did you contact your talk radio station,? We in Knoxville know there is a link between such hate speech and gun-murder. It is not simple cause and effect, but hate speech, broadcast by famous celebrities, enables twisted ones to pick up their guns. "All that is necessary for evil ( read fascism) to triumph, is for good people to do nothing." Where were you in Oct? Where will you be as threats and hate surfaces in January?

The mob response to Palin's

The mob response to Palin's rants says much about their species pedigree - there truly are sub-humans.

Let us hope that Palin will

Let us hope that Palin will never again rise above a (failed) campaign for president; of the Wasilla PTA.

So THIS is an example of the

So THIS is an example of the Evangelical Christian Right? It sure doesn't fit with any of God's ways taught in my Bible. If the GOP ever hopes to survive and make a comeback, they must first learn to distance themselves from cult types like these.

To the shameful

To the shameful end--worked-up pro-McCain yahoos even embarrassed their candidate during his incredibly graceful and articulate concession speech, as they had before during rallies. It was the one ugly note in a truly, inspiring beautiful evening and showed just how grotesque and out-of-control the desperate campaign had become. Does the pitbull deserve all the blame? Probably not, but she certainly stepped into the fray with little concern or understanding of where her kind of rhetoric inevitably leads. It is just another reminder of how fortunate we are to have voted her down. As to whether she will become the new leader of the Republican Party, that may be so, but it will be of a more marginalized extremist group than exists now. If a party calling itself "Republican" wants to succeed, they will need to purge the crazy ugliness and recover their probity. Palin's first challenge will be trying to survive politically in Alaska. While the initial public response toward her is protective, it is far from clear how much Alaskans like what they have newly learned about their governor. It would appear significant that, while strong, McCain's lead in Alaska was not as strong as it was in some other states, such as Oklahoma. More meaningful, perhaps, is that voter turn out in Alaska was on the weak side--not a resounding endorsement of their native daughter.

Oh please, just make her go

Oh please, just make her go away! Not with a bang but with a whimper.....

Let's hope that the

Let's hope that the Republicans actually DO nominate Palin in 4 or 8 years so as to guaranty that her idiocy will further embarrass, shame, and lock out the right wing zealots who might otherwise have a chance to make their way back.

Sarah the Janitor

Sarah the Janitor

... and please don't take

... and please don't take your eye/ear off Limbaugh and Rep Boehner - they're already trying to fit into Palin's shoes (jackboots). Sorry lot, but they foment evil with their ranting; what a fatal combination: chock o' block with Colts and low-low-down on I.Q. Shouldn't fomenting violence be a crime? Just asking.

I have long been a fan of

I have long been a fan of Truthout and am certainly no fan of Sarah Palin, but lately several of the headlines to your stories have been misleading and inflammatory. This one is the worst. This abuse of language is shameful, just like that perpetrated by the extreme right. In my view, it amounts to slander. Palin did not utter death threats; her followers did. What she said was bad enough; there was no need to carry it to a whole other level! Let's not corrupt liberal causes by adopting the same kind of language Palin did: a publication that calls itself Truthout should stick strictly to the truth.

Palin should have known that

Palin should have known that such accusations were likely to provoke such reactions from irresponsible people. Palin and Mc Cain are supposed to be matured politicians with a good knowledge of American history. Thank God it never happened.

What I don't understand is

What I don't understand is how the Republican Party selected her. She reflects on their leaderships' standards and insight. And why doesn't McCain tell her to shut up?

Looking at this from the UK,

Looking at this from the UK, the whole religion-in-politics thing appalls and worries. Added to a rhetoric which questions the possibility of the other side's candidate being a "true American", it's so simple to see that this sort of behaviour provokes the crazies to emerge from the wood work. Was Palin innocent inasmuch as she wasn't aware of what she might bring about? Of course not. People like her, allied to the Zionist right, have a history of eliminating their opponents in the unshakeable belief that they are the right ones to lead; just look at the Republican and Zionist propensity to murder alleged "terrorists" by missile or drone. From this, it is but a small step to transfer the idea to domestic politics, albeit using loonies to do the job and not the government itself.

I'm glad Sarah is gone and

I'm glad Sarah is gone and would be glad to never see or hear from her again. She was hateful, but also ignorant and was used by the GOP to ignite their ignorant base. Now that they've lost by a significant amount they're trying to blame her (with anomynous leaks) and save McCain's honor. They won't bring her back in 2012, surely they aren't THAT stupid! Are they?

I find it troubling that

I find it troubling that some Democrats are gleefully saying "bring her on again! -- we'll have Democratic presidents for the next thirty years." She is irresponsible and dangerous, she is competent enough to make frustrated and stupid people vicious. If we promote good candidates we don't need straw men.

So there's no sexism in

So there's no sexism in Alaska, women are treated with respect and gender equality is the rule. If Silly Sarah's claims are true, why does Alaska have the highest per capita rate of rape?

What amazed (and disgusted)

What amazed (and disgusted) me from the start about Sarah Palin was her arrogant lack of humility ("i never even blinked" when offered the vice presidential nomination, an extremely important position for which she was woefully and almost comically unprepared) - and her sense of entitlement ($150,000+ worth of clothes and accessories for herself and her family.Read: Louis Vuitton handbag for her seven-year-old.) But what frightened me the most about her was her willingness, even eagerness, to whip the brain-dead members of her "base" into this out-of-control frenzy of hatred. That any intelligent Republican would consider her a viable representative of their party defies belief.

She claims not to have spent

She claims not to have spent the money on clothes, yet she has submitted reimbursement claims for her childrens' personal travel expenses, including stays at fancy hotels, as well as for expenses she incurs maintaining her home in Wasila. I know the McCain loyalists are trying to pin blame for their loss on her, but the story about the out-of-control spending is completely consistent with Palin's willingness to spend a lot of other people's money for her own gain. I hope this sticks...this woman will abuse power as bad as or worse than Bush or Cheney if she gets the opportunity.

How do you take "but I

How do you take "but I thought Africa was a country" out of context?

How does a person make up

How does a person make up the lie that someone is "unamerican" and "palls around with terrorists" (knowing full well that this kind of slander was specifically meant to rile up the kind of unamerican godless loons who would threaten his life) and then call it "mean-spirited" and "cruel" to actually use her own words and actions against her? This is called SLANDER and slander is a criminal offense. It would be interesting what would happen if the victims of political slander actually retaliated with legal action. It might not make sense politically, but if any of these threats gets serious PRESIDENT OBAMA (deal with it), should go after the source of the violence with every power at his disposal. Who knows, maybe the "party of personal responsibility" would actual have to deal with the reality that WORDS AND ACTIONS HAVE CONSEQUENCES.

Palin's ability to navigate

Palin's ability to navigate the English language is on par with Bush's. The circuitous grammar, and seemingly endless sentences tied together with "and also," nearly had me on my knees praying for God to send down angels to teach her how to speak. She's not a scapegoat of the McCain campaign. On all fronts, the choices made by that campaign show how shallow the Republican party has become in the past eight years. Republicans, themselves, haven't necessarily stooped to such levels; the branding of their image has. Where is the ethic of life in the party? Where is the American dream--the ending of poverty, the ending of war, the ending of abortion, creating the world's best health care, and promoting of education? Religion doesn't stop at the abortion issue. Its about recognizing that God creates everyone. We don't have the choice of the family we are born into; the color of our skin; or the amount of wealth our grandpas claim. But a society that cares for life looks for ways to make everyone healthy and happy. But about language and logic: Palin's thought patterns were difficult to follow, and pretty vacuous. Thank God she isn't leading us and I hope she never will.

It was criminal to incite

It was criminal to incite mob-mentality the way she did. To hold a microphone at a televised rally, while successfully inciting mob-mentality, while spreading hate-smearing is criminal. She never apologized. Not even after she was informed of and aware of the harmful results she injected. I hope she freezes like an Alaska river, never to emerge again on the national stage, forever still and silenced. Let her continue only as her self described Silly Pit Bull/Wasilla Hockey Mom and stay the hell out of politics. Here's hoping her 15 minutes of fame has permanently faded!!! Stupidity and hate have no place in the OVAL OFFICE or any public office. It is my further opinion that she is a evil piece of whack cake, that does not deserve a public office or forum of any kind. That is my opinion in the matter. KEEP HER OUT OF PUBLIC OFFICE!!!

How cowardly of these

How cowardly of these Republican men to think that Sarah Palin could be used to save their sorry asses and then be tossed aside and degraded. She deserves neither of these things. She is a tough determined woman who initially sounded like so many women I know in northern Minnesota, the Iron Range, the ranches, fields and forests of our country. I think there are a number of folks who were bemused by Sarah Palin--the scrappy fighter--and applauded her "say it as it is" attitude. It was out and on the table, and as a result it can be changed. But to now suggest that she was the reason for John McCain's defeat is balderdash. She didn't try to back out of a debate with Barack Obama, she didn't complain, whine twist and turn every other week. She was supposed to be the lastest Anita Bryant or Phyllis Schafley. And, like those two tragic and totally used ladies, she was used and now abused. I really don't want us to get into Sarah bashing. She is fiesty, determined, and I am glad I am not an elk.

William Ayers is s strong

William Ayers is s strong proponent of peace and social justice anymore, and has been for many, many years. Books that he has authored, or co-authored abound. There is a serics of books about Teaching and Social Justice, that are read, and discussed in teaching circles, from preschool forward, in a student's educational life. It strikes me as more than deplorable the Palin should accost someone on the basis for such a small segment of their life, when the whole of their life indicates determined strength for peace and social justice across the board. ...especially when all she has done is to foment violence, of take advantage of people in all of her government positions.

Palin spoke the truth re

Palin spoke the truth re Obama and Ayers. The truth hurts. Looks like Ayers has come out of hiding now.Perhaps Obama will have him as one of the speakers at his coronation. Obama lies about all his shady relationships. His relationships speak louder than his "lofty" words.

I could see Palin's

I could see Palin's psychosis from day one, and was astounded to see her put forth as an actual candidate! This says so much more about the dysfunction of both McCain as a leader and the GOP as a party than it does a small town demagogue. If other states had Alaska's resources no one would be broke, but having left a major debt in little Wasilla, caused mostly by that sports arena (in a town of 5000 at the time!) I don't consider Palin to be a fiscal conservative, nor an individual with any perameters.

Progressives need to keep an

Progressives need to keep an eye on this hate-monger and work to make sure that she never holds a major political office in the US. Hypocrisy, ambition and a lack of intellectual curiosity in government have never bode well for this country. We've had far too much of that here already. Never overestimate the attention span of the public or underestimate the treachery of the Neocons. As far-fetched as it may seem at the moment, they could still decide to groom and package Palin as presidential material for 2012 and the election results might be closer than we imagine. The Neocons are not going away any time soon and neither are the 46 percent of the electorate who voted Republican in this election.

McCain was the "commander

McCain was the "commander and chief" of his campaign and must shoulder the blame spike in death threats. McCain was as guilty as Palin. It was HIS campaign and he obviously allowed her rants to continue and grow more evil, ever more pushing the crowds to threatening behavior (although each of those parties are responsible for their own behavior). McCain relished the frenzy, thinking it would excite more voters to vote for him. Only when he was told to tone it down, did he do this. His support of this and his unwillingness to stop it from the get go demonstrated the kind of "leadership" he would bring to the nation, and thankfully it cost him the election.

I was once charged for

I was once charged for inciting a riot during a protest of Bush's war. I was loud and obnoxious but not violent and I certainly didn't advocate the assassination of a sitting president. At the very least Governor Palin should be charged and tried accordingly. Let us give her, her day in court.

Consider Palin's complaints,

Consider Palin's complaints, as listed above: "... "jerks" who had taken "questions or comments I made in debate prep out of context." She said: "I consider it cowardly. It's not true. That's cruel, it's mean-spirited, it's immature, it's unprofessional and those guys are jerks if they came away taking things out of context and then tried to spread something on national news that's not fair and not right." " These comments pretty well summarise her own lies and mis-representations about Obama from the moment she took the stage ten weeks ago.

Palin was the ultimate

Palin was the ultimate anti-intellectual hate monger. She incited hate and fear towards Obama and regularly trashed scientific research as well. She trots back to Alaska without un-doing any of the damage she did. Her fearful followers are buying up guns and her friend James Dobson is getting ready to ignite yet another culture war. She needs to be asked about her "incendiary rhetoric" and if she does not retract it the GOP needs to distance themselves from her and from Dobson and others if they truly care about this country.

Some one subscribed me to

Some one subscribed me to GOPUSA FRIENDS,Newsletter and I was pissed. But then I thought I would just stay subscribed to it and see what they had to say during the campaign. Well I read stuff I couldn't believe coming from those Republicans. They were full of hate for the Democratic party and told some of the most bald face lies to their subscribers, and constantly begged for donations for their poor losing right winged candidates. They all are that way, not just Palin, Now I see where she got the hate in her speeches. They actually believe they own this country and the democrats will ruin it if they get into office. I hope they can see who put us in the economic downslide we are in now. On election day I unsubscribed from that right winged hate mongering Newsletter.

The evils, once released

The evils, once released from Pandora's box, will not so easily be recaptured. One can only hope that law enforcement and the American people remain vigilant against the growing strength of the hate groups in this country. People should read the Intelligence Report, issued regularly by the Southern Poverty Law Center, and do what we all can to neutralize hate groups' power for extreme evil. And then, when Sarah and Todd and the others start to gear up for their next hate-filled political campaign, we all need to vote them as far down as is possible.

Sara Palin is what the face

Sara Palin is what the face of hate mongering racism looks like in the 21st century. She is a very dangerous woman and should never be allowed to win a national office. We must be vigilant in remembering and reminding Americans about her history.

Certainly Sarah Palin

Certainly Sarah Palin deserves some of the blame for this, but I watched rallies on TV where she said those things and John McCain was right there on stage with her when people were shouting 'terrorist" and "kill him". I also saw Cindy McCain accuse Barack Obama of not funding her son in Iraq and that it sent a cold chill down her spine. The entire Republican campaign was at fault for this vile stuff. By blaming Palin, they are trying to let the rest of this hateful crowd off the hook.

Why is this not "conspiracy

Why is this not "conspiracy to commit riot"? Where is the Dept of Homeland "Security"? Where is the Justice Dept? (Busy investigating Acorn) Why is this coming out AFTER the election?? Call your Congresspeople and demand an invesstigation!

Why didn't Republcan civic

Why didn't Republcan civic leaders and pundits roundly condemn her for this? Was it the "Thou shoult not speak evil of a Republican" rule that allowed her hatemongering to prevail? Thanks to Keith Olberman and Rachel Maddow, MSNBC did what more cowardly voices chose for the most part to ignore.

In defense of Truthout, the

In defense of Truthout, the title of this NEWS item ( as opposed to editorial) belongs to its original source material, written by one Tim Shipman for The Telegraph, United Kingdom. Curiously, "Anonymous", wrote: "I have long been a fan of Truthout and am certainly no fan of Sarah Palin, but lately several of the headlines to your stories have been misleading and inflammatory. This one is the worst." I respectfully recommend that "Anonymous" pay closer attention to the general format of this blog which regularly draws breaking news -and editorial comment - from a wide variety of global sources and presents them, unedited, in digest form -along with the links to the original sources . You may want to re-read the article, as well, this time with focused attention, as it specifies in the text exactly what the title proclaims, to whit: "The Secret Service warned the Obama family in mid October that they had seen a dramatic increase in the number of threats against the Democratic candidate, coinciding with Mrs Palin's attacks." etc., etc. .... That would be characterized as a statement of "fact", not "opinion", and certainly not "slander". This is slander: Repeatedly slamming Obama as an "un-AmeRican Socialist, Palling around with domestic teRRoRists." calculated to incite the worst and ugliest emotional, reptilian-brained reactions of those voters euphemistically characterized as "low-information", unacquainted as they are with critical thinking...i.e., Palin's idea of what "RReal AmeRicans" RReally are. Really... You "shoot the messengers" Truthout and Mr. Shipman of The Telegraph with Palin's own asssault tongue as when she blames the Media's "stinkers" - for reporting her own incendiary rhetoric and Narcissistic behavior. FYI, I ama humble subscriber and, in no way associated with Truthout or it's contributors.

As an ashamed constituent of

As an ashamed constituent of Sarah Palin's, I would like to say that I was truly shocked, dismayed and appalled by her juvenile attacks on Barack Obama. Though I did not vote for her when she ran for governor in 2006, I respected and even admired Palin for her courage in taking on members of her own party, such as the state GOP chairman who was conducting party business during his day job as head of the Alaska Oil & Gas Commission. And for a while, she was considered a breath of fresh air after the rancorous and disastrous reign of Frank Murkowski. Now, I am ashamed of the fact that she is the governor, as witnessed not only by her mocking attacks on Obama but also by her truculent behavior in the whole Troopergate affair. Palin said "Hold me accountable" as the Troopergate investigation was starting up. Well, Sarah, that's exactly what I'm doing.

The whole presidential

The whole presidential campaign was without content. Whatever it took to be a plausible candidate and winner. That's all. Our "republic" is a joke. A travesty. The American people are ignorant. Not stupid, but ignorant- of their history, of the Constitution, of everything. We will get what we deserve, unfortunately for all 300 million of us- thanks to Bush, Cheney, Norquist, Robertson, and all the rest of the ignorant, incompetent, idolatrous ideologues who have been setting policy since "Saint" Ronnie Reagan in January, 1981.

Of course McCain could have

Of course McCain could have put a stop to it. Of course the GOP could have put a stop to it. But the pattern is apparent. The GOP will do anything -- let's call it ANYTHING to stay in power. They don't give a damn about the USA. They give a damn about how they can line their own pockets. Go back to Nixon -- kicked out of office for abuse of power, with many of his henchmen doing prison time. Go back to Reagan -- twelve of his staff did prison time for the Iran/Contra scandal. And Reagan might have ended up doing time too if it hadn't been for the cowardly S of a B George H.W. Bush, who pardoned everyone involved in it on his last Xmas eve in office. And his failure as a parent gave us the spoiled ass brat W. as a president. Now go back to Bush II. One must do a study of how much the Bush and Cheney families have enriched their net worth by privatizing the military and taking us to war. The lesson to be learned --don't let the GOP near an open cash register.

I challenge Tim Shipman or

I challenge Tim Shipman or anyone to defend this constantly repeated idea that Sarah Palin is now the frontrunner to challenge Obama in 2012. Mr. Shipman? Anyone?

Oh dear...a really low

Oh dear...a really low information voter has claimed Ms. Palin was right about Obama and Bill Ayers, writing that "Ayers has come out of hiding." Ayers told the press he had only a passing acquaintance with Obama, as the liberal, mainstream AND conservative press reported previously. Save yourself some embarrassment next time...read the articles before you comment on them.

Sarah Palin would certainly

Sarah Palin would certainly not be my choice for President, Vice Pres, Governor or dogcatcher. However, the vitriol being hurled at her from all directions is over the top. She carried out her part in a typical right-wing smear-and-run campaign, and it seems to me that the MEN who put her in that position are now making her their whipping boy. So-called progressives who grab the opportunity to jump on a defeated opponent with hobnailed boots are no better than the hate-filled prehistoric throw-backs who are the curse of this country and the mainstay of the right wing.

The American Facist,

The American Facist, Christian Identity, Klu Klux Klan, Skinhead, Far Right Conservative Fundamentalist movement has an ally in Palin. They were just waiting to get they're marching orders. For all that made regular contributions to the Obama campaign... don't stop... just re-direct it to the Southern Poverty Law Center so that they may continue to have the resources to monitor these domestic terrorists, the real threat to our security.

Poor Sarah -- she was the

Poor Sarah -- she was the ultimate usee, thrown at McCain by the ultra-right, ultra-fanatic "base" of his party, and he grabbed on to her in deference to them, groveling for their support. "Country First" was a total lie and scam -- he was crawling for votes from any faction that might possibly deliver them. He was on his last hurrah, at 72 -- this was not the McCain of 2000, when the conspiracy pushed him out for W. Sarah was chosen for her rabid right-wing knee-jerk positions on all the issues that the conspiracy is pushing. Her political opinions have never been tempered, or hampered, by intellect. The zanies thought they could push her as a counterpart to Hillary, which insulted Hillary, Sarah, and all American women. Sarah was so far out of her depth, it would have been funny if it weren't so tragic. But hey, W is no brain either, and they got him in office for 8 whole horrible years. That faction doesn't want people who can think -- thinkers can see right through them, and we thought our votes through to Obama and a Democratic Congress. And Tina Fey can now do Thirty Rock in peace. As the closing line in "Pagliacci" goes, with the corpses strewn around, "The comedy is finished."

one thing that we might look

one thing that we might look at is the number of comments on this column. it seems to indicate just how much of the national consciousness is still taken up with Ms. Palin. I am not a fan of hers, but i do think she was plucked out of an environment in which she look fairly large, but when she entered the national stage, the smallness of her capacities became all too obvious. I think if her as a cheerleader--an immature, acting out--i can get in your face cheerleader. And McCain liked that about her

"But it has now emerged

"But it has now emerged that her demagogic tone may have unintentionally encouraged white supremacists to go even further." My question to this statement in the article- If Palin's demagogic tone UNINTENTIONALLY encouraged people to go further, what exactly WAS her intention? A rhetorical question as far as I am concerned and a very dangerous one at that.

McCain, Palin and the GOP

McCain, Palin and the GOP are all responsible for the hate-mongering language they espoused during the campaign. Their lies, smears and slanders of President-elect Obama were uncalled for and did instigate violence from those who believed them. They did nothing to undo the damage their smear emails and hateful rhetoric caused and many still believe their lies. I have never in my lifetime seen anything so vulgar as the McCain/Palin campaign and their disciples put out. Palin is ignorant, and her discriminatory attitude has no place in national politics. She was not ready now to be V.P. or President and will never be ready in the future.

Well, now is a good time for

Well, now is a good time for the FBI to find all these racist gangs and root them out. If there are people planning to harm this President then find them and arrest them. And if they won't give in, then let their be a thousand Wacos. Racists have no place in a democratic society.

My son has recently worked

My son has recently worked on a political campaign for a Republican candidate. My son is not a Republican, so he is probably a little biased, but he assured us that the people running the Republican campaigns are just plain scary. He also mentioned "really stupid as a group". Ever since the Republicans allowed themselves to be aligned with the Evangelicals and members of the far right, they have basically begun the destruction of their party. Sarah Palin is an example of their "ideal" female. Frankly, I am more frightened of people like her than I am of terrorists. It is really distressing that her hate rhetoric has stirred up hatred at a time when the country is showing a real desire to come together as a nation. She is shameful.

Unfortunately, it is a

Unfortunately, it is a simple fact of human nature that a person doesn't have to be very bright or articulate to be a successful demagogue. The easily swayed can always be bent to mob violence by a passionate speech. This has been so throughout history. For the independent minded who believe in personal responsibility, it sort of runs against the grain to lay the blame on the speaker, but basic psychology shows us that is exactly where the blame goes, and this is something that a responsible leader should understand. Sarah Palin's behavior during this campaign disqualifies her ethically from holding office--if she didn't know better, she sure should have.

Remember that McCain stated

Remember that McCain stated that Ms. Palin was completely vetted by the RNC. Therefore her behaviour should not have been a surprise to them and ultimately John McCain is responsible for his actions in choosing her.

The question to pose now,

The question to pose now, "Are the threats over or just in remission?". Palin is only one source of hatred against Obama, white Supremacist males is the other. Shock jocks are just as capable to stir up the KKK.

"When Fascism comes to

"When Fascism comes to America, it will be wrapped in a flag, carrying a cross." -Sinclair Lewis 'Nuf said.

I agree with "The issue is

I agree with "The issue is not her..." "Where were YOU when Sarah Palin was evoking death shouts? ... Did you write to your paper? Did you contact your talk radio station? I know that I contacted the major TV stations, and even contacted the Secret Service, expressing concern for the Obama children. I also e-mailed these letters to my friends, along with contact info for the Secret Service, etc. -- and asked them to speak out also. It is IMPORTANT that we make our voices heard. For all that talk about Ayers, which the media blithely parroted, no one talked about McCain's past connections. We can demand that the media put forth some journalistic effort, and cover both sides/ the whole story. The Republicans perpetuate this myth of the 'liberal media' (ridiculous, when General Electric owns NBC, etc.) -- with their whining they bully the media into keeping quiet. Americans need to demand true journalism!

How about suing Palin for

How about suing Palin for slander? Won't that make the citizens of Alaska proud of her.

For weeks I would wake up

For weeks I would wake up seeing Sarah Palin sitting behind the President's desk in the oval office. I lost so much sleep that I still have not recovered. I now feel so relieved that I still can't sleep from joy and I can't get enough and want every hour I can get. I knew who she was from day one and I was terrified that the ugly base she excited could carry the ticket. John McCain was a sorry enough candidate with his wanting to stay in Iraq for 100 years, ask all eligible young people to serve because "there will be other wars" but when Sarah came along, it was HORRIFYING! GOD BLESS AND PROTECT OUR PRESIDENT ELECT BARACK OBAMA.

Wow, stay in Alaska Sarah!!

Wow, stay in Alaska Sarah!! She said: "I consider it cowardly. It's not true. That's cruel, it's mean-spirited, it's immature, it's unprofessional and those guys are jerks if they came away taking things out of context and then tried to spread something on national news that's not fair and not right." Is this not what she did to Obama? Her defense against the McCain people tells me that Troopergate was her doing.

What people here are not

What people here are not grasping is that Sarah HAD NO IDEA that the power of her words could stir up resentment and hatred that would lead to an increase of death threats to Obama. Her stupidity and ignorance are well documented enough to realize that she has little to no knowledge of American history, and probably learned who George Wallace was for the first time when John Lewis brought it up. People here are giving her FAR TOO MUCH CREDIT in claiming that she intentionally stirred up racial hatred. However, after having been briefed by the Secret Service that her words were inciting an increase in death threats to Obama, the fact that neither she nor McCain felt the need to publicly excoriate those that would participate in such hateful demonstrations at their rallies, even in cases when shouts of N***er were yelled that she CLEARLY heard at her rallies. That is what makes for the most unforgivable aspect of McLost/Failin. Why, upon learning of the increase of death threats to his opponent would McCain the so called 'honorable man' not realize that his rallies were absolutely what John Lewis was decrying as conjuring up George Wallace. John McCain was TOLD by the Secret Service precisely this, but chose to publicly lambast John Lewis. For that I cannot forget, and there's no salvaging his reputation as a 'straight talker', nor should journalists allow him to try and still claim that mantle with any validity.

Which is worse – Hanna

Which is worse – Hanna Montana or Sara Palin ? It was painful to look at the VP debates and having to endure assaults of Barbie-esque cutesiness such as ; β€œGoshdarnit , Senator Biden ! Doggone it ! There you go again blaming George W Bush β€œ And even though it seems unbelievable , Sara Palin – the hockey-mom from Heck - might honestly feel that there is nothing to blame Bush for , seeing Gay Marriage and Abortion as the biggest threats to our civilization . And of course Arabs! But being a fundamentalist Christian bimbo is no excuse ! Because it’s of course all connected and all stems from the same conservative policies - this war ,the most expensive we have ever had and in which four thousand Americans have died for nothing except trying to hold a dying empire together , has bankrupted the economy , leading to losses of jobs , failure of banks and it is appalling that the enormity of George Bush’s crimes aren’t discussed , not even by the so-called β€œleft” . Why is this man and the Axis of Evil people that surround him still not in jail ? And this , - the omission of the war criminal statues of George Bush - , is the biggest proof of how the press in β€œthe Land of the Brave” is hopelessly spineless and it’s up to us patriotic Americans to keep on pressing the point executive accountability ! We can make a difference – I myself started undermining the war effort by writing anti-war letters to the newspapers in September 2001 when the popularity figures for the president and the war was soaring and see what the popularity numbers are now !

I agree with the blogger who

I agree with the blogger who wrote that "words and actions have consequences." Obama letting these criminal offenses of slander and inciting violence slide may have grave consequences. "Palling around with terrorists" in the eyes of many of Palin's followers made Obama a terrorist in their world. Words hurt and can be a form of violence. Palin's provocation should at least be seriously investigated so as to send a message to people who use words in a violent way. Is it not teasing and bullying? May we evolve into a world of empathy.

I began taking sips of air

I began taking sips of air when Hilary Clinton make her remark about Senator Robert Kennedy's campaign, and almost stopped breathing when pundits blatantly called for slander on national media outlets. Still, there appears to be more rational folks than zealots. For now, we survive. Sarah Palin merely said out loud what the disturbed dream about every day. My hope is for a healing that eradicates racism.

Prepare for Senator Sarah

Prepare for Senator Sarah Palin. Convicted Senator Stevens may not long remain in the US Senate. Then Alaskans must hold a special election to replace him. To paraphrase Ed McMann at the beginning of the old Johnny Carson talk show: "Heeeere's Sarah!"

What I agree with Bill

What I agree with Bill Maher about is that no one (except him) has really brought up Palin's husband, who was a major player in the Alaskan Secessionist movement! This guy was part of a group that has stated over and over it's hatred of the United States Government and every single one of it's policies and she has spoken out many, many times (AS GOVERNOR) about how she agrees with their goals and ideals!!!! Country First??? yeah, Alaska as it's OWN country first and screw the rest of us!!!!

People speak of the right

People speak of the right and the left as if it were a linear political continuum. It is not. It is a circle. Both radical ends of the spectrum are exactly the same. They believe that social problems can only be solved through violence. But when blood is spilled all sense is driven away, all meaning disappears, they are one and the same on the battlefield. Palin has been taught that she is a "Christian soldier" but there is no such thing except in the rhetoric of the far right fringe who act as if the New testament never existed. All true christians are in the center turning their cheeks and looking out for the Common Good.

Palin and her ignorant,

Palin and her ignorant, malevolent rantings are the inevitable product of decades of hatred spewed by Republican operatives. From Lee Atwater and the Willie Horton ads during the Bush I campaigns, to Rush Limbaugh's endless ad hominem hateful rantings, to Ann Coulter's uncouth bomb throwing rhetoric, to Michael Savage's on air incitements to violence, to Karl Rove's campaigns taken form the play book of Joseph Goebbels: it's been many, many years since this party was led by civil, decent people. Official Republican speak panders to the lowest, most divisive, hateful and violent emotions. Then its bloviators set themselves up as the moral paladins of our culture. The Party of Hatred needs to spend as many years in the political wilderness as it takes for civil, decent people to regain control of it. If they never do, well we have had political parties die before. Whatever reasonable, moral people are left in the Republican Party should re-form it minus the Haters.

Re Palin, I can't help

Re Palin, I can't help thinking of her in the word that Bob Dylan applied to the (then unknown) assassin of Medgar Evers: "Only a pawn in their game." I hope and pray that the Secret Service can overcome the threats to Mr. Obama and protect him throughout the next 8 years.

Hard to believe that Palin

Hard to believe that Palin and her fellow Republicans can truly believe in that they are Christians when there actions are diametrically opposed to the teachings of Jesus. They use "God" to justify their actions in the same manner as the National Socialist Party did in Germany. Nice company to keep.
