Bring Them Home, Mr. President

Washington - The most dreadful burden of the presidency - the power to send men and women to die for their country - seems to weigh heavily on Barack Obama these days. He went to Dover Air Force Base to salute the coffins of fallen troops. He gave a moving speech at the memorial service for victims of last week's killings at Fort Hood. On Veterans Day, after the traditional wreath-laying at Arlington National Cemetery, he took an unscheduled walk among the rows of marble headstones in Section 60, where the dead from our two ongoing wars are buried.

As he decides whether to escalate the war in Afghanistan, Obama should keep these images in mind. Geopolitical calculation has human consequences. Sending more troops will mean more coffins arriving at Dover, more funerals at Arlington, more stress and hardship for military families. It would be wrong to demand such sacrifice in the absence of military goals that are clear, achievable and worthwhile.

And what goals in Afghanistan remotely satisfy those criteria?

The Washington Post reported Wednesday that the U.S. ambassador in Kabul, Karl Eikenberry, recently sent two classified cables to officials in Washington expressing what the newspaper described as "deep concerns" about sending more troops now.

Gen. Stanley McChrystal, chosen by Obama to lead U.S. forces in Afghanistan, has asked for perhaps 40,000 additional troops to carry out a counterinsurgency campaign. Armchair Napoleons in Washington, comfortably ensconced in their book-lined offices, insist that Obama must "listen to the generals." But Eikenberry was a four-star general until Obama named him ambassador earlier this year. He commanded U.S. troops in Afghanistan in 2006-07. He needs to be heard as well.

In what were described as sharply worded cables, Eikenberry reportedly expressed serious doubts about the willingness of Afghan President Hamid Karzai to tackle the corruption and mismanagement that have made his government so unpopular and ineffectual - and that have allowed the Taliban to effectively regain control of much of the country.

Karzai, you will recall, committed what observers described as widespread, blatant election fraud in "winning" a new term in office. In many parts of Afghanistan, the Karzai government is seen as so weak and corrupt that the Taliban has been able to move in as a lesser-of-two-evils alternative.

It is axiomatic that a successful counterinsurgency program requires a partnership with a reliable, legitimate government. If the Karzai regime is not such a partner, the goal that McChrystal would be pursuing with those extra 40,000 troops is not achievable.

Obama is also reported to be considering scenarios in which he would send roughly 30,000 extra troops, somehow convincing our unwilling NATO allies to make up the difference, or send about 20,000 troops and modify the McChrystal plan, opting instead for a "hybrid" strategy that's part counterinsurgency, part counterterrorism. I'm skeptical that either of these options sets goals that are achievable, and I'm certain that neither sets goals that are clear.

Following his visits to Dover, Fort Hood and Arlington Cemetery, Obama should focus the attention of the White House and the Pentagon on a question that too often is overlooked: What troops?

Our all-volunteer armed forces have been at war for eight years with no end in sight, serving tours of duty of up to 15 months in the war zones of Iraq and Afghanistan. Many units have been called to serve multiple tours. By contrast, most Vietnam War veterans served a single one-year tour.

Fighting two big simultaneous wars with our armed forces stretched so thin has put enormous emotional, psychological and economic stress on military families. The suicide rate in the armed forces has climbed steadily, as has the incidence of stress disorders among veterans. The Pentagon is adept at shuttling its people around and has worked out how to provide the 40,000 troops McChrystal wants. But any new deployment would come at a heavy cost - a human cost - far beyond the billions of dollars required to train, equip, transport and maintain the units being sent.

There are reports that Obama has refused to sign off on any plan until his advisers tell him how they propose to end the expanded war they advocate. But this sounds like just another way of saying: Tell me how we're going to fix the mistake we're about to make.

As long as our goals in Afghanistan remain as elusive as they are now, Obama shouldn't be sending troops. He should be bringing them out.

"The most dreadful burden of

"The most dreadful burden of the presidency..." The language of authority freaks; you can almost hear the breathless awe. How about if everybody says NO when they give the orders? What power do they have then? Americans: wake up to how sick your political system is and stop obeying orders.

President Obama, do what you

President Obama, do what you said you would do Before you were elected. Why do you think we gave you the largest Majority Vote in our History ? It sure was not to continue the 'policies' of the Bush regime. To refresh your memory..Bring all our Troops Home. Put them to work here rebuilding Our Nation. We are counting on you, Sir, to do what you promised. End these senseless and insane wars that have no end .

Global peace through

Global peace through immediate withdrawal and dismantling of US Military Bases the complete and total destruction of all weapons of mass destruction by loading them in a rocket and firing it from space into the sun and take the war mongers wealth to return the poisoned regions back to pristine status THAT IS HOW YOU EARN THE NOBEL PEACE PRIZE GIVEN YOU

Mark these words: The Draft

Mark these words: The Draft Will Return.

It is time to honor the

It is time to honor the promises of your campaign and honor the sacrifices that our soldiers have made. Bring them home, Mr. President, and start rebuilding our country.

An absolute requirement must

An absolute requirement must exist for an intervention in someone else's home to succeed... credible support and organized collaboration from the residents involved in the effort. This is lacking from the powers to be in the house where the conflict is taking place. There is no government to speak of, as in Iraq, after dismantling the structure that existed, and attempting to replace it with our gucci designer democracy. There is now a vacuum that some are insisting be filled with foreign military force. This is obviously unsustainable and insane. Remember the definition of insanity... doing the same thing while expecting different results! Others would suggest you use the plausible rationale of a fraudulent election process to declare a lack of credible government leadership, and declare the conflict MUTE, given the complete change in circumstances. I would count myself in that growing congregation. Not ONE more life should be wasted on a conflict that was designed to fail by the previous administration, as a way of sabotaging the next presidency (expected to be won by a democrat), by producing the military and economic chaos that would be unsolvable in the 4 years it would take the previous administration to win back control. A Diabolic Plan? You betcha! Play the right card Mr. President, and rebuild our country with the mantra... all politics is local!

How could he bring them

How could he bring them home, when those "Behind The Shadows" who started the war are telling us that: The war WILL continue under any cost? Don't you think that Obama takes others from these people too? I don't think he'll say no when they're tell him do it (escalate the war). He's fighting for his life and presidency. "Blessed Are The Peace Makers, They Shall be Called The Sons (Children) Of God".

Lyndon Johnson never forgave

Lyndon Johnson never forgave himself for his escalation of the Viet Nam war and looked like a broken man when he left office. Nixon bribed us with promises of peace with honor and brought us neither in good measure. The Viet Nam war was not about Viet Nam; it was a proxy battle with China and the USSR. In the same way the Afghan war is not about Afghanistan. What is it about Mr. President? Do you see some worthwhile military objective? Bin Laden and the Taliban will not be easily excised without horrendous collateral damage (what a callous term for civilian casualties). Take heed from the Russian failures in the region. Some battles are not winnable and some just aren't worth winning.

People are beginning to wise

People are beginning to wise up to the real depth of evilness that is being perpetrated against this country by the same people that carried out the attack on 9/11....and it sure was not the scapegoats that were blamed. How much more proof is required before the truth is finally evident. Anyone that has a brain should be able to see that it was planned..all of it..for none of it could have happened without the connivance of the ones in power. Look around...almost everyone of them are Still in power..or hovering in the background busily pulling all the strings. Why do you think an old man and a dumb female were Picked to hold their soiled banner ? Any fool would know that it was a Pick calculated to fail in order to give a Democrat ( Obama ) a clear Democratic Victory. The Neocons knew that after the mess propagated on the Nation by Bush and his cabal that they stood about as much chance of winning the election as a snowball's chance in hell. So...Obama was Picked to sucker all of the people---and it worked. They figured that a 4 year term by a Democrat would give them the time to recoup, as well as to sabotage any of Obama's election plans. So far, so good. We, the people, are slowly waking up to at least Some of what has been done by these evil forces. They have Almost succeeded in their plans to destroy us Financially, destroy our Military and also destroy us Morally. Our young Military are coming home, broken men unable to live with what they have been forced into doing. ( Volunteers, my a--, they are all Economic Recruits hoping for the means to survive and possibly go to College when their Time is up.) These are all good decent men and women..the cream of the crop..that are being sent to Hell and back until they do not even want to live. Then when they ask for medical help they are refused. People, Wake Up. Demand that President Obama do as he promised and end these Neocon trumped up wars and bring All of our men and women Home. Let him know that we stand beside him to do this. Then these men can start rebuilding Our Country and restoring this nation to be one we can be proud of. Trying to Subjugate other countries, while allowing our country to fall apart so as to make us easier to control-- must be stopped. Why wait until the Chains are brought out of hiding ? Clean our government of all the Traitors that are hiding there. President Obama will not have a chance for the Change he promised us until all of the AIPAC Zionist Bunch, Neocon Conservatives, and the So-called Christians have their fingers unpried from his neck. He has to have our help for he cannot do it without us. So it is up to us to Wake Up Congress. How ? By camping on their doorsteps..wherever they are..and making sure that None of them get another Vote..not one. Once they realize that Huge campaign funds from the Corporations, Wall Street, and Banks will no longer be enough to buy votes, we will see Changes...but not until. If not, we soon we will be lucky to be left with two dimes to rub together.
