Leaders Agree to Delay a Deal on Climate Change

by: Elene Cooper  |  The New York Times

President Obama and other world leaders have decided to put off the difficult task of reaching a climate change agreement at a global climate conference scheduled for next month, agreeing instead to make it the mission of the Copenhagen conference to reach a less specific “politically binding” agreement that would punt the most difficult issues into the future.

At a hastily arranged breakfast on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit meeting on Sunday morning, the leaders, including Lars Lokke Rasmussen, the prime minister of Denmark and the chairman of the climate conference, agreed that in order to salvage Copenhagen they would have to push a fully binding legal agreement down the road, possibly to a second summit meeting in Mexico City later on.

“There was an assessment by the leaders that it is unrealistic to expect a full internationally, legally binding agreement could be negotiated between now and Copenhagen, which starts in 22 days,” said Michael Froman, the deputy national security adviser for international economic affairs. “I don’t think the negotiations have proceeded in such a way that any of the leaders thought it was likely that we were going to achieve a final agreement in Copenhagen, and yet thought that it was important that Copenhagen be an important step forward, including with operational impact.”

Sacrificing the world to

Sacrificing the world to salvage the PR exercise that is Copenhagen. hahahaha *pukes* As long as the growth-based economy is their altar of worship, the planet will continue to be reduced to ash, binary code, and human flesh. Really though, I can do more to save the planet with a pound of sugar than 50 Obamas would ever willingly imagine.

Ha, Obama bends again! Here's a man who stands for NOTHING! Someone should write a book: "Obama, The Trail of Broken Promises." At least he's consistent though in having broken every single promise and not just one or two.

My first reaction was

My first reaction was despair that the process had been delayed when a decade ago was the time to act. However what appears to have happened is we've bought a few months for the US Senate to move some important legislation forward. The US was going to have to take finals before it had done more than crack the textbook. Setting out a term is far better than an 'F'. Whatever passes in 2010 will become law, whether or not 2/3 of the Senate approves. Simple majorities can move significant legislation forward. The NYT has framed this as a loss. They haven't explained that there is a great deal that can be accomplished. They lead the story with "put off the difficult task of reaching a climate change agreement". That's the first clue. Why not lead with "the pressing need to place the United State's efforts in alignment with the rest of the world so we can effectively make the transition to a clean energy economy"? When legislation puts on track to accomplish just this the NYT's and most of America's MSM will look pathetic and out of touch. Most of all their lack of journalistic principles is glaring. For a thorough, heated - and level-headed - discussion go to Climate Progress.

It's a shame, but I'm not

It's a shame, but I'm not surprised. I'm ashamed of our political system and leaders who are utterly failing in saving us from a danger we have known about for decades. It would have been so much easier when we first knew. Every year we wait makes it much more difficult and makes it much less likely we will succeed. Whatever the reasons for the delays, they are not reason enough to delay any longer. It is up to us, all of us who place any value on life, to force our leaders to fight global warming. We must do whatever it takes, as if the lives of our descendants depended on it, because they do. Who will join me in this fight? Our leaders are not up to the task, so it is up to us. Any ideas would be appreciated.

This is so totally

This is so totally unacceptable! It's been months of negotiations, more of a year of Obama, and now this about "we can't be expected to do this in 22 days!" Who do these so-called leaders take us for? Sacrificial lambs?

What they are finding is

What they are finding is that there is no significant human impact on climate change, i.e., the truth. Al Gore has perpetuated a fraud on the world and the public is now starting to see the truth come out. Even a large number of the 3000 scientists that Obama lists as believing in the Climate Change issue dispute it and don't know how their names got on the list. The whole thing is a fraud. One volcano eruption has more influence on climate change than the sum of all human activity since they first appeared on the planet. You people need to quit spinning everything - you're getting dizzy.

To "Mon, 11/16/2009 - 12:48 — Courageous (not verified)" please stop your nonsense: the event you are talking about took place 251 millions years ago in Siberia (and might have caused the Permian-Triassic extinctions), way before mankind. Nowadays, human generated CO2 emissions are about 130 times as big as volcanic ones, so stop your disinformation. I would like to believe this is just ignorance, but I think your case is helpless as there is no one more deaf than someone who doesn't want to hear.
