A Media Parable for "the Center"

It's been 16 years since a Democrat moved into the White House. Now, the fog of memory and the spin of media are teaming up to explain that Barack Obama must hew to "the center" if he knows what's good for his presidency.

"Many political observers," The San Francisco Chronicle reported days ago, say that Obama "must tack toward the political mainstream to avoid miscalculations made by President Bill Clinton, who veered left and fired up the 1994 Republican backlash." This storyline provides a kind of political morality play: The new president tried to govern from the left, and Democrats lost control of Congress just two years later.

But, if facts matter, the narrative is a real head-scratcher.

During the 1992 election year, Clinton had campaigned for the White House under the mantra "Putting People First." But as economic analyst Doug Henwood was to comment, President-elect Clinton swiftly morphed into the champion of an austerity plan that could have been called "Putting Bondholders First."

From the outset, President Clinton made clear his commitments to the corporate centers of economic power by choosing such officials as Treasury Secretary Lloyd Bentsen, Commerce Secretary Ron Brown, trade representative Mickey Kantor and Secretary of State Warren Christopher.

Soon after becoming president, Clinton abandoned his few initial stances that might qualify as "left." He quickly deserted his brief position for gay rights in the military. Under fire for his nomination of progressive law professor Lani Guinier to be assistant attorney general for civil rights, Clinton tossed her overboard.

In sharp contrast, the new president fought like hell for the corporate-beloved trade agreement known as NAFTA. And he spread his wings as a deficit hawk, while his campaign's pledges of "public investment" fell to earth with paltry line items. Less than five months into his presidency, Newsweek lauded Clinton's "shift to the right" and urged him to show "the backbone" to stay there.

But none of that has stopped the media's clucking about the Clinton administration's early "lurch to the left." The myth never died, though it was quickly ripe for debunking.

In real time, one of the most astute debunkers was Barbara Ehrenreich. As the only writer from the left with a regular column in a major US newsmagazine (she later got the boot), Ehrenreich wrote a Time piece in mid-June 1993 that directly addressed the nascent mythology. The incoming president's leftward lurch was "a neat parable," she noted, "but it never happened."

Ehrenreich added, "The lurch to the left is like the 'stab in the back' invented by right-wing Germans after World War One: an instant myth designed to discredit all one's political enemies in one fell swoop.... Maybe it's been so long that we've forgotten what 'left' is and how to tell it from right. At the simplest, most ecumenical level, to be on the left means to take the side of the underdog, whoever that may be: the meek, the poor and, generally speaking, the 'least among us,' as a well-known representative of the left position put it a couple of millenniums ago."

More than 15 years after Ehrenreich wrote those words, the tall tale of President Clinton's lurch to the left is still in the air. Warning Democratic politicians against being "liberal" or moving "left" remains a time-honored - even compulsive - media ritual. But as Barack Obama fills key economic posts in his administration, the left-leery and corporate-friendly press is likely to be quite content.

It's so good to know that

It's so good to know that I'm NOT misremembering the history of the Clinton Administration. Let's not forget the decision to continue the Bush policy of returning Haitian refugees to certain death in Haiti at the hands of the military regime there.

I am no longer expecting

I am no longer expecting a lurch to the left from the new administration. From VISA to the council on foreign relations, i suspect Obama will govern from center right field. But about the question as we to be afraid of a republican backlash--my god he has not taken office and we have heard, communist, socialist, marxist and the list goes on in the myriad of ways in which he will be discredited even before he starts his term... I hope that that does not prevent us from being interested in the policies of a left leaning government. We need to look at the many way in which we have been giving away our country, in the many of ways in which new emerging nations like China own more of us than we own of ourselves. Will we see a move to a new world power, to new form or currency not based on gold or silver standards? Will we be willing to give up more civil rights in the name of Homeland Security? I hope we are being vigilant, not paranoid about the right.

So, the "left" is for the

So, the "left" is for the good of the people, all people, and the "right" is for the good of those who already have it good. Got it.

Also, let's not forget

Also, let's not forget Clinton's memorable "welfare to work" program, which basically ended welfare (for poor people, at least) as we know it. It forced single parents to take two or more jobs to pay the bills because the government wasn't going to feed their kids any more. Transportation costs to and from the jobs and day-care costs basically take all of one of the jobs, leaving a $7/Hr. job to pay for rent, food, utilities and everything else. He also repealed the law that kept investment banks separate from holding banks. Clinton was the most labor-hostile, corporate-friendly Democratic president in recent history. Facts are irrelevant, though. If the media says a lie often enough it becomes the truth. People still believe that 9/11 was engineered by Saddam Hussein and that Barack Obama is a Muslim.

In the consistent,

In the consistent, relentless, incessant revisionism that passes for the press in 21st Century USA, the only 'unexamined truths' are those that advance the destructive, profit narrative of the owners. If there is any lesson from this election that we can put against a calendar, it's simply this - we lost ten years of climate control due to the intransigence of the USA. If the people have any rights remaining, it's the right and the duty to protect and preserve the environment for the future. Otherwise, we will watch the burn, baby burn zombies clear cut our future.

This is a phony siren call

This is a phony siren call from the manipulators of the Republican Party. Their claim is the oldest fluke in Logic -- the right-wing shenanigans of Gingrich and Co. that got them a majority in '94 are NOT proof of any left-wing trend on Clinton's part. In Logic that's called "Following that, therefore because of that" -- for which the "logical" theme song is "It Ain't Necessarily So." These sore losers are trying to salvage whatever they can of their disastrous ideas for governing, and they will apply every scare tactic they can dream up to trick the new administration into a trap. Fortunately, Obama is bright enough not to bite on their poisonous bait.

I am very concerned over Mr.

I am very concerned over Mr. Obama's appointments. Voters endorsed a strong, substantive shift left. That does not mean centrist. Appointing Clinton, et al, pulls back the curtain to reveal the manipulator. I never expected Obama to be anything but breathing space enabling us to survive to get real change. The problem of course is that the issues are life threatening.

I think the message is that,

I think the message is that, whatever position you want to take, the Right Wing will castigate you with accusations devised to raise fear. Their validity is not the point...it's polarizing politics...win at all costs. Anonymous above clearly doesn't appreciate that bullies never consider themselves bullies. Nor do they realize that all our fates are interrelated. We all need to thrive for the nation to thrive. Not just the wealthy or powerful.

Clinton was never 'left' but

Clinton was never 'left' but only postured the stance to get elected. Unfortunately, the GOP believed the hype and was mad as hell when he stole their thunder! Why did they hate him so? Because he took all the credit for getting their programs enacted...

"[V]eered left and fired up

"[V]eered left and fired up the 1994 Republican backlash." Huh? How'd I miss that? No, 'Regina' (and Solomon) have it about right. Beware counterfeit admonitions against "miscalculations." In fact, the best calculus of a politician with an instinct for successful - dare we say right? - decision making might be to ignore the left/right continuum, just keep doing what seems best, and let history sort it out in the end. The only satisfaction to be had from the W. Bush interregnum is that my descendants will come to know him as the cretin he was. NB Regina: "post hoc, ergo propter hoc"

"The press is likely to be

"The press is likely to be quite content"? Please. The Clinton Democrats spent the 90s giving the Republicans everything they wanted, and the GOP still reduced Bubba to National Enquirer fodder. I've never understood why the right can be as radical as they want, but once anyone to the left of Attila the Hun so much as holds a press conference, "responsible" journalists call for a move to the "center." And, for those of you who don't live here and therefore may not know, the San Francisco Chronicle is probably the most conservative publication in town. No, they aren't calling for his impeachment (even they know he still has to, you know, get sworn in and do something first), but they will be among the first to say "not so fast" to any Obama proposal more liberal than, say, giving taxpayer billions to billionaires. The rest of the MSM will probably just crucify him outright.

Beware how the media and

Beware how the media and propagandists distort the past - a large reason for the republican takeover in the '94 and following elections was the use of "wedge issues" - most prominently (a moment to guess?) - gay marriage, rights, and civil unions. Initiatives were launched in many states with an emphasis on where there could be a possible turnover with dramatic success in raising republican and social conservative turnout. It didn't come up as much this time around, because in '06 it was shown to have ceased working. Outside of killing Gore's chances in 2000 because of the Lewinsky scandal fallout - I don't think Clinton's standing affected congressional loses. Forget about Left and Right - the terms have been so distorted at this point they have no relevant meaning. Obama should focus on carefully planned Progressive ideas that can succeed in channeling thru today's political environment - it will be enough to please most liberals, and success will be hard for conservatives to challenge.

PLEASE ignore what the Right

PLEASE ignore what the Right says. They are trying very hard to DRIVE THE NARRATIVE right now. No longer did the market crashes cause McCain to lose...now...the markets saw the liberals were going to win, and so, they killed themselves in anticipation. It's already the Obama Depression sez Limbaugh. These people never quit; like rodents that have to chew all the time or they die.

Sadly, there's little time

Sadly, there's little time left for our species to be able to come together to deal with the problems that we have helped to create on our beleaguered planet. What with over population and over harvesting of ocean life and excessive toxicity spread throughout the biosphere, we remain essentially asleep at the wheel. To our last gasp we will be fighting amongst ourselves as the light of humanity goes out with a whimper, if not a bang. Left, right , or center, human beings need to come together and work hard to address imbalances between ourselves and the rest of the life forms on this sphere. All the rest is mere fiddling while Rome burns.

like obama has said on

like obama has said on numerous occasions; this is really not about him but about us....SO, until the 'underdog masses' who apparently were mobilized enough to vote obama in, not only keep their collective and individual eyes on the ball, but actually continue(start?) making an informed, passionate and relentless common cause together on all fronts, the ridiculous mythic game of 'the center' will continue to be used as the cheap shell game it is to drive the narrative towards the agenda. so don't let some spin doctor spoon feed you the same old trash. THINK FOR YOURSELF, COMMUNICATE WITH OTHERS AND ACT IN CONCERT.

Sorry, but this IS about

Sorry, but this IS about President-Elect Obama. We voted him into office, and it's up to him to govern according to the best interests of the people. If we must continually remind him not to do things that are damaging to us, something's wrong. Period.

Clinton never "veered

Clinton never "veered left." He took congressional leaders for his cabinet and weakened his position with the legislature by overplaying his hand and not realizing that just because his party held congress that he couldn't avoid negotiating with the right. He had a cabinet that was full of beltway outsiders and had little Washington experience and he assumed he had more of a mandate than he did. The Republican backlash and the Gingriches contract with America was the result of poor organizational philosophy....not a shift "leftward." Obama should keep his enemies close and have more Republicans in his cabinet and count on the health of the nation to matter more come the midterm elections than individual victories in Congress. Protect himself from the progressive backlash that wonders why he isn't governing from further left and from the Republicans backlash that will attack him as soon as Bushes economic policies actually hit the entire nation nation...under Obamas watch.

SORRY jonathan, but the

SORRY jonathan, but the american people NEED TO STAY TUNED IN, THINK FOR THEMSELVES and KEEP ON PUSHING...first maybe they just need to get good and pissed off ...OBVIOUSLY something IS wrong, but just saying its wrong won't cut it with the bunch of criminals gaming the whole nine these daze. and while i agree obama SHOULD do what we elected him to do, there is no sweat factor, the people blink and you can bet your bottom dollar there 'best interests' will be compromised for a profit. have you EVER known it to be different?

So the right is having and

So the right is having and will continue to treat us to a full-bore Republican hissy fit. Has all that noise scared you yet?

When will the right say good

When will the right say good things about the left? About the same time the left says good things about the right, never! To get things done however we need to bargain. So I say lets investigate all the crimes that could put half the W administration in jail, and if we need to give something to the right, we could drop a charge or two.
