Bush Set to Relax Rules Protecting Species

Washington - Animals and plants in danger of becoming extinct could lose the protection of government experts who make sure that dams, highways and other projects don't pose a threat, under a regulation the Bush administration is set to put in place before President-elect Obama can reverse them.

The rules must be published Friday to take effect before Obama is sworn in Jan. 20. Otherwise, he can undo them with the stroke of a pen.

The Interior Department rushed to complete the rules in three months over the objections of lawmakers and environmentalists who argued that they would weaken how a landmark conservation law is applied.

The latest version has changed little from the original proposal, despite the more than 250,000 comments received since the change was first proposed in August, according to a Nov. 12 copy obtained late Wednesday by The Associated Press.

The rules eliminate the input of federal wildlife scientists in some endangered species cases, allowing the federal agency in charge of building, authorizing or funding a project to determine for itself it is likely to harm endangered wildlife and plants.

Current regulations require wildlife biologists to sign off on these decisions before a project can go forward, at times modifying the design to better protect species.

The regulations also bar federal agencies from assessing emissions of the gases blamed for global warming on species and habitats, a tactic environmentalists have tried to use to block new coal-fired power plants.

Tina Kreisher, an Interior Department spokeswoman, could not confirm whether the rule would be published before the deadline, only saying that the White House was still reviewing it. But she said changes were being made based on the comments received.

"We started this; we want to finish this," said Kreisher.

"We started this; we want

"We started this; we want to finish this," said Kreisher. And just what is "this"? Far as I can see, "this" is the destruction of the what's left of the Mother on which we all depend for the sake of yet more blood money for the already fabulously rich. And they really, really do need the money. How else are they gonna find and get to another planet to live on when they finish turning this one into a lifeless hulk?

Just one more piece of

Just one more piece of evidence that B$sh and his cronies just don't get it. Mother Earth isn't infinite and the environment isn't immune to human activity and that it DOES matter what we do to it.

It seems as if they are

It seems as if they are doing these things out of pure spite. I just don't understand what possesses these people to do these things. Do they just not see any value in anything other than parking lots and oil refineries as far as the eye can see? Bush even admits we're addicted to oil, but he clearly hasn't thought about the implications of that statement. How many apocalyptic movies have we had portraying that as the ultimate catastrophe? And they still don't get it.

Why don't Pelosi and Conyers

Why don't Pelosi and Conyers impeach Bush Cheney before they completely sell out to Corporate America. Cheney has already been Indicted for his roll in the profiteering on the Private Prisons in this country. If nothing else, maybe someone can smash Bushes hand so he can't sign any more laws against human rights and giving away all our public lands to the rich. These people are evil and should be held as terrorists

Their historical records

Their historical records seem to indicate a tossup on who was the worst. "Tricky Dick Nixon" or "Sneaky George Bush". Will the 25% that still support Bush please tell me why.

Can't the man ("W") do one

Can't the man ("W") do one thing that is beneficial and not harmful to the world and its creatures? It is difficult to tolerate even one more hour of his dictatorial regime.

George W. Bush is a monster

George W. Bush is a monster and, for this planet and its people, a terrorist. He has been obsessed with leaving a legacy, and that legacy is total unremitting spite, a super Destructo game. He is a psychopath, hell-bent on destroying habitats and environments, economy and employment, and life and limb for humanity. He is not alone -- Richard Cheney is his motivator, as was Donald Rumsfeld. The infernal combination of stupidity and stubbornness is their hallmark. We will pay for the last eight years for many more to come.

I'd be flown to Syria in a GM corporate jet for rendering if I really told you how I feel about Bush-Cheney-Dumsfeld-Wolfowitz et al. I second all the comments preceding this post...in addition to what I cowardly don't dare mention at this time. ;-(
