The American Worker

I am an American worker, and you are damn right I want the wealth to be shared and spread. I am talking about the wealth my hard work helped to create, but was taken from me by George Bush's base, the very rich, or as I know them, my corporate bosses. For the past eight years I have watched W.'s and McCain's (Country Club First) base grab the largest share of our country's wealth. Where did they take it from? They took it from my family's pocketbook, and my co-workers' families' pocketbooks. They stole the wealth that I was trying to build for me and my family when they stripped my pension plan from me and told me to invest in a 401k. Then they stole most of that 401k and other workers' 401k savings with this economic meltdown. This was a massive transfer of wealth from the workers' pockets into the already stuffed pockets of the rich. My retirement savings and my coworkers' savings all across America have been looted by the corporate bosses, who just got bailed out while we got left out. Again!

The American worker, whether black, brown, white, red, yellow, or rainbow color, has been fleeced over these past eight years. We are the ones who go to work every day. We don't own our places of work, nor do we help manage them. We just go in and do the job. And we must be doing one hell of a good job because we are told that we are the most productive workers in the world. We are working longer and harder, but our paychecks keep shrinking! Where are those productivity gains going then? Not into our pockets. Our standard of living has been going down these past eight years ($2,000 less in family income since W. took office) This is another damn transfer of wealth into the hands of the extremely rich.

Their greed is insatiable. Take our family's health care. They do. They keep passing on their increased costs to us, or they just drop coverage for the worker completely. That means we either join the 50,000,000 who have no health care, or we end up having to buy it privately, thus eating up a huge portion of our family's income. If we manage to hang onto our health care plans, our deductibles, co-pays, and out-of-pay contributions keep skyrocketing. This amounts to another massive transfer of wealth from our pockets into the overflowing pockets of our corporate bosses.

The list goes on for the American worker. We saw overtime pay stripped from millions of workers during this past nightmare eight years. The worker was still working overtime, but due to a new "boss law" passed by W. and McCain's party that assists these thieves, the workers didn't receive overtime pay because they were declared exempt. They also weakened the workers' health and safety standards or just plain didn't enforce the laws already on the books. As a result, the American worker pays the price in lost days due to accidents from unsafe conditions or from lingering, expensive illnesses suffered from unhealthy working conditions. This too is a massive transfer of wealth from our pockets into our corporate bosses' bulging pockets.

To further sweeten their own pots, they took full-time jobs and converted them to part-time with no benefits, or they just made their employees line up and reapply for their exact same jobs at half the pay. Are we beginning to see what a true transfer of wealth looks like? So, do I want to see a spreading of the wealth? You bet your sweet hind-end I do. But all I ask of Obama is to give me and my co-workers the ability to retrieve some of the wealth that has been stolen from us.

Strengthen the laws that give workers the right to organize and bargain for a contract with our bosses. The current laws on the books have been torn to shreds by W. and McCain on behalf of their base. This is just part of their attack on American workers. Under globalization, the bosses seek a much cheaper workforce, which always means non-union, which means "can't fight back." That is why they have gutted the laws that protect workers. The laws that once gave us a level playing field with our bosses have been rendered useless, including our legal right to strike. That law said I had a right to strike, and could.

The American worker doesn't want a handout. Never did. We do want a hand up from our government. We still believe and have hope that this is a government of, by and for the people. We do want to know that our government will finally stand with us against this onslaught, this Robin Hood in reverse, being conducted by the bosses against the workers. The bosses know that W. and McCain have been on their side for the past eight years - and so do we workers. We just want our government to now stand on our side as we stand up against this corporate attempt to create third world working conditions right here in America. Restore our right to fight for a better living for ourselves and our families, and let the power of pissed-off workers, united in struggle, spread corporate America's stolen wealth back into the pockets of those whose pockets got picked these last eight years - the American worker.

History repeats itself once

History repeats itself once again. Check out the story of Harry Bridges (ILWU leader in the 30's) for inspiration....We need a Harry, for sure, but the lesson is we all need to be Harry right now, Spread the wealth - spread the solidarity. www.theharrybridgesproject.org

You don't need a PhD in

You don't need a PhD in Economics to know which way the economy blows. (to paraphrase Bob D). The American worker also was stuck with paying more for childrens' college, as public financial aid morphed into private loans from corporations (banks).

Well, you voted for Bush

Well, you voted for Bush TWICE, didn't you? First time, understandable. But the second time, what were you people thinking? Thanks for this time, most definitely! Phew!

Why stop at the last 8

Why stop at the last 8 years. I saw it start when Reagan took office. Before the "Republican Revolution" I use to get decent pay increases yearly and I received overtime pay for working "over-time". After Reagan all that changed, gradually the "regulations" changed to favor the people who had plenty and it was clear back then where the extra money that resulted from all that "increased worker productivity" was going. Everyone should get paid by the hour. PERIOD. Eveyone should get over-time pay. PERIOD Hourly salaries should be public record for any company that sells stock and should be available to unions and arbitrators for any privately held companies that pay low wages. If people saw that an executive making 1M a years was actually getting around $450 an hour or that the 10M a year exec was actually getting $4500 and hour, people might wake up and demand change.

It is way past time for a

It is way past time for a voice like Rick's to be heard. We the people have been cowed by charges of "class war" screeched by the wealthy and powerful who long ago declared class war on the powerless individual employee. But Rick is wrong about one thing. The plight of the working men and women in this country is not the work of the Retrhugians of the Cheney/Bush junta. Rather it is a bi-partisan affair attracting all but a handful of legislators from both parties. Which President was the cheer leader for NAFTA and "free trade?" Which Delaware Senator carried the water for the credit card industry centered in his state that decriminalized what we used to call usury and twisted the bankruptcy laws to the distinct disadvantage of the workers of the country. With the outlines of President-elect Barack Obama's administration beginning to emerge, I fear the working men and women of the country face little in the way of government driven relief. It is a class war in this country and has been for over 100 years. And the class that produces, that makes up the huge majority of citizens is losing.

Thank you Rick Kepler! You

Thank you Rick Kepler! You have written informatively about what really happened to the wealth. The Bush tax cuts were largely an illusion to anyone making under 200,000 a year. For most of those workers, their salaries actually went down $7,000 during the Bush years. Prices for necessities, gas, healthcare, all went up. You are absolutely right when you say the greatest transfer of wealth from the middle class to the rich happened during the Bushed years. I think people are starting to find out the truth about this. Thank you again for your excellent perspective.

Even more insidious is the

Even more insidious is the use of the medical industrial complex to fuel economic growth. What they fail to mention/notice is the fundamental contradiction between using the medical industrial complex for growth and affordable healthcare for all.

Workers don't need a

Workers don't need a government hand-up. The government belongs to the bosses. What we need to do is organize--not in the bureaucratic insurance companies that pose as labor unions today, but in a worker-run, democratic labor organization that's dedicated, not to "labor peace" but to workers' power. If all workers, whatever their political views, would unite in One Big Union and use our combined economic power, we could establish true democracy--not just political democracy but economic democracy. The Industrial Workers of the World aspires to be that One Big Union. Check out www.iww.org and www.workersed.org/crutch for information.

Rick,,,,from a fellow

Rick,,,,from a fellow Teamster, currently on O J I and have been now for 3 years,,, you said it well sir,,, we have been piling the wealth instead of spreading for too long now,,, we must have faith that the future with our new President Barack Obama will return this country and the American worker to a level of respect that we once had and have since watched it slip through our fingers like sand... shame on all the union management for being part of this problem,,, example--- I drove over the road for many years and at one time or another I have been at every major truck stop in this country,,, not once did I ever hear of or see a Teamster representative on hand to promote the cause of the Teamsters of which I am now a very proud member . Amen! The first thing

Amen! The first thing Obama could do is be more honest about the problem and place all of our nations challenges in global context. and stop the nations habit of maneuvering economic policy to increase GDP and focus on the purchasing power of every citizen. Cut out the outliers...the top and bottom 5%...take a standard deviation of the rest and devise economic policies to increase their real income. Common Sense?

It's true that the American

It's true that the American working class have gotten screwed bigtime in the last eight years, but it certainly started with Reagan when the government and the media were taken over by the far right, which made it much easier to pretend that giving money to the rich somehow benefited everyone. Defunding anything that didn't directly benefit the wealthy elite led to a generation or two of poorly educated citizens which made it easier to persuade them to vote against their own interests.

Not much of a surprise, is

Not much of a surprise, is it? My father, who survived the Great Depression (and later joked that it "wasn't really that great") always said that when the Democrats were in power, everybody benefited, except possibly the rich man; when Republicans were in power, nobody benefited except the rich man. Looks like it's still the same old story.

A handful of mostly

A handful of mostly Republicans in congress tried to stop the 700B bailout/giveaway. What support did they get from the electorate? What future support will they get as a reward for trying to help us? We do not even pay enough attention to know who they are. Now that the 700B is out there, and shown to be too fast and foolish, we just ignore "who did and didn't go for it". We voters get what our lazy butts deserve. And we are handing the problem off to future generations, because we are too lazy and greedy to fix it ourselves.

The best thing Obama could

The best thing Obama could do is to restore "Government Af The People, By The People And For The People" to the People. For the passed eight years we have had government of the people by and for the owners of the corproations.

The story of Harry Bridges

The story of Harry Bridges rings a bell with me. My family has worked in the ILWU since the 1930's. Although the ILWU has gone through many struggles, this union is strong. Because of Harry Bridges and his philosophy, we ILWU members enjoy the solidarity that each working American deserves. Harry Bridges died in the early 1990's, but his legacy lives on. Each July we honor Harry Bridges and the union he built. Do check out the story of Harry Bridges. His story is, indeed, an inspiration for all.

Obama needs to: - Reinstate

Obama needs to: - Reinstate the FCC fairness doctrine so that right wing propagandists can't dominate the airwaves. - Reinstate the FCC rules that prevented big compamnies from dominating media markets. - Create some new anti-trust regulations that fit todays' market place. - Restore some power to unions and workers. - Fix the mess created in healthcare when hospitals went from "care-centers" run by charitable groups turned into "profit-centers" run by corporate boards. (I knew we were in trouble when I saw the names of the big corporate CEOs showing up on the boards of all the local hospitals. It happened right after Reagan let then start deregulating everything. Just another example of the rich grabbing more control and profiting off the working class.)

Everything here is

Everything here is absolutely true! But, as Dick Cheney would say,"So?" The American worker has cosigned union busting during Reagan (PATCO anyone?) and beyond, cosigned NON-single payer universal health care, cosigned 401k's in lieu of pension plans DESPITE knowing that 401k's consistently under perform pension plans, cosigned the subsequent raid on the 401k's by wall street that the American worker made so much more convenient by putting their collective pensions in one tidy place: the stock market, cosigned by voting Republican, cosigned sending their own children to die in a meaningless war in Iraq. So the dumb ol' American worker finally wakes up in time to win the TL squared (i.e., Too Little, Too Late) prize. Nice going!

I see few motivated young

I see few motivated young workforces coming in to fill the ranks to build new manufacturing, farming, and service bases. Seems like parents have to hit the soup lines for awhile so kids will get real and get off their butts.

I'll bet that Gary wont be

I'll bet that Gary wont be one of those in the soup line

Religion and fear keep the

Religion and fear keep the American people from rebelling against these outrages while the greedy, lazy, incompetent children of the rich and privileged, the LEGACY BRATS, screw up everything for the rest of us. Case in point: George W. Bush...and his ilk. Kind of reminds me of the French right before their Revolution. But you know what is said about the French as compared to Americans. "The French government is afraid of its people; the American people are afraid of their government."

Mr. Kepler and

Mr. Kepler and Mr.Crutchfield, Your article and your post respectively have given me hope. Not Obama, YOU. You recognize the problem of the American worker. We've been played for chumps, we behave like chumps and we let our unions speak for us when our unions are clearly not democratic, but want their piece of the pie and the power. After United Airlines reneged on their pensions, not one labor "leader" called for a national strike. Ask yourself where your union dues go and start to form factions within your union to make it truly democratic (an online bulletin board or usenet group?) and truly representative of membership's views. Let's start a party -- Chumps for Change and really change things in this country.

Three words: GLOBAL TRADE

Three words: GLOBAL TRADE UNIONS.

A beautiful piece! I would

A beautiful piece! I would only add one thing: It is time we reject the term "consumer" as a description of the majority of us in this country. We are consumers for maybe an hour a week, while we are out shopping for essentials, etc. Otherwise, we are the producers - the ones who earn and produce. It is the corporations that are the consumers. Profit is theft. The only way a business can stay in business is if it pays those who do the actual work less than what their work is worth. Until we understand this basic reality, we will never overcome the crime that is capitalism.

AMEN and AMEN! I have been

AMEN and AMEN! I have been on a downhill slope for the past 8 years; my last full-time job was outsourced to India and now that I am 50+ in age, I'm too OLD to hire, apparently! I am now an independent contractor working in the education system, and my hours and income are dwindling with the economy. I sew window treatments for money, I work for Dallas County Colleges, Collin County Colleges, UTA, UTD, UD, SMU, DISD, and a host of independent instructors. No insurance, no benefits, savings long gone, no retirement. Three years ago I made $15K. Two years ago I made $13K. Last year I made (gulp) $11K. Guess I am in the poverty range now, I qualify for foodstamps!! I look forward to some leveling of the playing field for the struggling working class.

OK, I get it. Losing your

OK, I get it. Losing your house, your job, your health care, your savings, and your sons and daughters is what is takes to get white working class males to FINALLY get it, and vote against the Republicans. As the rest of us know too well, all the stats show that this is the group who have kept them in office. Certainly the 1% who benefit from Republican "trickle down" economics aren't a large enough voting base to keep electing Republican candidates. So, good for you, Rick Kepler. Welcome to the left. Keep agitating.

It started before Reagan,

It started before Reagan, back in 1972 when Nixon used the tried and true tactic of "divide and conquer" to alienate the students and left from the unions and the working classes over Vietnam. The latter then became Reagan Democrats and most of them voted for George W. Twice. Slow learners?

So STOP already with the

So STOP already with the snide remarks about folks who only just got on to one of the longest running and most successful scams in history. Sure would have been better they'd caught on earlier but the rest of us shouldn't have tumbled to it for so long. I, for one, am glad to welcome anyone who wants to come to our party, even if they're late. And too, the more of us who know how many we are, the sooner we'll get off our butts and kick those SOBs where it hurts most--in their bulging pocketbooks.

Plain and Simple:

Plain and Simple: Nationalize the auto industry. The jet-set execs of Detroit have not known how to run an auto industry for at least 40 years. Plain and Simple: Nationalize the auto industry. Let’s develop , IN THE OPEN, a national transportation policy in which Detroit and its dependencies will play a role, a role determined by the American people, not by jet-set execs.

Wait until Obama further

Wait until Obama further cuts taxes for businesses and the wealthy! You think it was bad then wait and see how many more job cuts there will be, how many more will be outsourced! Good luck everyone, Obama's mess is on the way!!

We have a Harry Bridges

We have a Harry Bridges right now . . . in Congressman Dennis Kucinich; President-Elect Obama, make him your Secretary of Labor.

Welcome to the hell we call

Welcome to the hell we call Britain. Soon the Messiah will send his goons to take your guns away.

read Naomi Klein's Shock

read Naomi Klein's Shock Doctrine, and then think about what Obama is doing...it's not good and not what we need or wanted. I think the only way to get things to change is to keep marching in the streets, and I am not so sure that will work either, but what else do we have? Congress is NOT on our side.

The only thing left to do is

The only thing left to do is to nationalize. Other than that we will end up on the streets waving out guns because that will be all the power we have left.

Look I understand the

Look I understand the leaning of this site but I have to wonder why everyone still harbors this illusion of the working man being a dyed-in-the-wool Democrat? West Virginia, the most blue-collar state in the country, while local politics still are dominated by Democrats, has voted Republican the past three elections. The most Democratic state, Massachusetts, is probably the most white collar. I'm not a Republican or an Obama basher, but while the Democrats had a good candidate and an anti-Republican mood in the country, but they are not going to keep winning if they don't wake up and realize the political leanings of the socio-economic classes in America are not what they think.

Let me add to that real

Let me add to that real quick. W's base was as much working class rural southerners and midwesterners as corporate executives. As for the nationalize the auto-industry comment, while there are so many reasons that that is an absolutely horrible idea, let me just put forth one from the working man's perspective. While Detroit's auto-industry is crumbling, my region of the country has seen a lot of jobs come in through foreign car plants in Tennessee, Carolina, Georgia, and Alabama. Yes the standard of living is lower down here so the salaries are not as high, but nobody's complaining, because we have jobs.
