Obama Says Change Is in His Vision - if Not Appointments

Washington - President-elect Barack Obama essentially said Wednesday that he is the change, striving to assure Americans that he'll shake up Washington despite filling his administration with old hands from the Clinton administration and the capital's corridors of power.

"Understand where the vision for change comes from, first and foremost," Obama said. "It comes from me. That's my job, is to provide a vision in terms of where we are going, and to make sure, then, that my team is implementing."

Obama made the remarks as he tapped another old Washington hand - this one former Federal Reserve Chairman Paul Volcker, as a top economic adviser - and prepared to name his former rival, Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., as secretary of state next week.

As a presidential candidate, Obama's central theme was that he'd change the way politics and the government work, and suggested that it'd take a fresh, outsider approach to do that. "Change doesn't come from Washington," he said. "Change comes to Washington."

Yet he's raised questions about how much he can deliver on that promise given the long list of beltway insiders he's named, or signaled that he will name, to run his government.

    Among them:

  • Former Clinton White House adviser Rahm Emanuel as White House chief of staff.

  • Former Clinton Treasury Secretary Lawrence Summers as chairman of the National Economic Council.

  • Former Clinton lawyer Greg Craig as White House counsel.

  • Former Treasury Department official and current New York Federal Reserve Bank Chairman Timothy Geithner as Treasury secretary.

  • Former Clinton Deputy Attorney General Eric Holder as attorney general.
  •     Others may not have been in the Clinton administration but offer deep Washington experience. Volcker, for example, was Federal Reserve Chairman during the presidencies of Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan. Tom Daschle, Obama's apparent choice to head the Department of Health and Human Services, is a former Senate majority leader.

Obama noted that Volcker "hasn't been in Washington for quite some time. And that's part of the reason he can provide a fresh perspective."

Generally, however, the president-elect rejected the suggestion that he needs to be surrounded by outsiders to stir things up. Instead, he said, he'll set the tone and will need experienced hands to implement the changes.

"The last Democratic administration that we had was the Clinton administration. And so it would be surprising if I selected a Treasury secretary who had had no connection with the last Democratic administration. Because that would mean that the person had no experience in Washington whatsoever," he said.

"And I suspect that you would be troubled, and the American people would be troubled, if I selected a Treasury secretary or a chairman of the National Economic Council, at one of the most critical economic times in our history, who had no experience in government whatsoever."

He stressed that, "what we are going to do is combine experience with fresh thinking."

Looking ahead to the next big test of the economy, Obama said that he'd go shopping on Friday, but stopped short of urging the rest of the country to do the same. Retailers are nervous that customers will stay away from what traditionally is the busiest and most profitable shopping day of the year.

"We are going to do some Christmas shopping," he said. "And Malia and Sasha have already put their list together. It's mostly for Santa. They send their letter every year. But we may do some extra shopping as well."

Asked specifically, Obama declined to recommend that Americans spend some money on Friday, perhaps mindful of criticisms of President George W. Bush for urging shopping as an economic antidote to the shocks of the 2001 terrorist attacks.

"I think families understandably are nervous and concerned about their economic situation," he said. "What we want to do is to be sober, to be clear, to recognize that we've got some real adjustments that have to be made. That's true in individual businesses. It's true in terms of individual family budgets. It's also true for the economy as a whole."

He did urge confidence, noting that "help is on the way." And he cautioned against people pulling back too much.

"What we don't want to do is get caught up in a spiral where people pull back from the economy, businesses then pull back, jobs are reduced and we get into a downward spiral," he said.

"As they think about this Thanksgiving shopping weekend, and as they think about the Christmas season that is coming up, I hope that everybody understands that we are going to be able to get through these difficult times, but we're just going to have to make some good choices."

    Obama Sold Out! Watch the

Obama Sold Out! Watch the movie at www.zeitgeistmovie.net. Obama is a mid-level manager, doing the bidding of international elites. He should have appointed people like Dennis Kucinich, Ralph Nader, Paul Krugman, Robert Kennedy, Jr., and other progressives. He is an insider and all his people are insiders because they are all sold out to the corporate elites. His choice to keep Gates is especially revealing. Wake up, people...Obama is no savior. He is an employee of the elites. He will not change the fundamental problem, which is that we are ruled by a fascist oligarchy that has taken over the government, politics and business.

    "Everything changes, nothing

"Everything changes, nothing remains without change." -- Buddha Borrowing more money, as Obama has planned, to stimulate Americans to continue spending and consuming as they did inthe 90's is a misguided approach to the economic mess unfolding. It will do nothing to address the root casues and stands to only worsen the long range outlook. Nothing new here.

    It makes sense. Washington

It makes sense. Washington outsiders would be hamstrung until they learned their way through the DC system. You certainly wouldn't expect Obama to choose from the Bush insiders for posts so who does that leave but people from the Clinton Era? I do like the list of progressives (Dennis Kucinich, Ralph Nader, Paul Krugman, Robert Kennedy, Jr.) from above but would they be able to navigate the system? Kucinich could but I'm not sure about the others. However, that IS a fine list and they shouldn't be left out. I'm not entirely happy with the way things are going with Obama but I'm still in a wait and see mode.

Yes, Obama sold out from the

Yes, Obama sold out from the very beginning, as soon as he won a seat in the Illinois senate. But the zeitgeist movie is mostly lies or distortions of truths.

    It's called the "bait and

It's called the "bait and switch" , it's a marketing trick, repackaged as "three card monty" it's a simple street hustle. Now ya see it, now ya don't. Toss a coin into that bottle there and win a cupie doll. Carney stuff, it's all carney stuff. It's Harry Lime at the top of the Prater wheel explaining to Holly Martins about the suckers and the mugs.

    It seems as though the

It seems as though the "establishment" has struck rather quickly to discourage any serious criticism of the incoming Obama administration. www.zeitgeistmovie.net has been shut down already.

I too am in a "wait and see"

I too am in a "wait and see" mode, mostly because I want to hold on for awhile to my hopes and enthusiasm over Obama's election. Therefore I am holding my disappointments in his first s0-called "centrist" selections in abeyance. It would be an awfully nice gesture to the progressives who were such a big part of getting Barack elected if he would promptly create a Department of Peace ond offer its cabinet position to Dennis Kucinich. That would do a great deal to allay the hawkish tone of his early appontments of Rahm and Hillary. Olease, please, Mr. President-Elect, do the right thing. Don't muff this chance. You won on a promise of change and you have the mandate to do that -- whay are you playing around with these Clinton-era hacks? Oh well, I still believe in you.

    the problem is Federal

the problem is Federal Reserve System (US central bank) which is privately owned but should be owned by american tax-payers; JFK resolved this problem but did it too drasticaly; Obama should do it through social reforms but it looks like it won't happen

    To the self-annointed

To the self-annointed progressives who have all the answers, and who love the mantra: Sell-out!! -- If you're so smart, why ain't you (politically) rich? --I'll translate: Why ain't you in office? --Have you ever built anything more substantial than a sand-castle? -- Have you ever gotten elected or helped elect a candidate to make change? --do you believe in democracy? -- You must believe the right-wing smears about Obama the socialist; fact is, he ran as a centrist, and that's what elected him. --Ralph Nader was so cool (Calvin Trillin: An ego trip that's barely seen") that he helped elect Bush! -- You might start working on the politics of the possible, lest you make the perfect the enemy of the good.

"what we are going to do is

"what we are going to do is combine experience with fresh thinking." "Clintonite, Clintonista, Clinton, Clintonista, Clintonite...Enough experience already. When do we get the fresh thinking?" "Ah, we seem to have filled all the positions...No, wait, we still have the Animal Control Officer in Trenton NJ. There, now we've got a combination of experience and fresh thinking." "Burned again."

    Progressive Obama? A fond

Progressive Obama? A fond but deluded wish. His appointments say it all. As regards the zeitgeist movie, it is a documentary, most of it historical fact rather than interpretation, and is on the net at www.zeitgeistmovie.com. It absolutely predicts and explains the 2008 financial debacle, and shows how the international bankers, using the private US Federal Reserve and other mechanisms, have enslaved us all economically. The movie is powerful and revealing, yet with a hopeful message that transcends politics. But zeitgeistmovie or not Howard Zinn and Noam Chomsky would both agree that Obama is sold out already and that the military-industrial and banking sectors will continue to control this country, and the world.

    The true measure of Obama's

The true measure of Obama's change message will be if he directs federal dollars to the places where the American people will benefit. We have money that could be invested in our communities. It is currently in in the hands of the Defense department. That department's budget has not been audited for years. It is so complex and confusing that no auditor can make sense of it. Meanwhile our public schools must account for every penny and watch their funding consumed by the cost of annual increases in healthcare premiums and No Child Left Behind. Our nation's roads and bridges deteriorate while we build more nuclear weapons and fighter planes. In 2009 the nation marks the 50th anniversary of the adoption of a Defense Department. It's time that we reframe the way we perceive ourselves in relationship to the world. We devote half of our federal budget to 'defense'. Our children's needs remain unmet while our resources are directed to highly questionable, defense expenditures. We have money in the budget. We need to shift our priorities. If President Elect Obama is committed to providing transparency, then the Defense department should be at the top of his list.

    Bullcrap. To all the

Bullcrap. To all the Americans who voted for the Democratic party based on a word, let me apologize to you. You were fooled. I for one am glad to see that the Democratic party will also follow the Republican party right off the cliff. Mr. O, your so called Lincoln excuses for establishing a cabinet filled with Clinton personnel is pathetic. Apparently learning from history and not repeating history is what is called for here. You will be handed a shitstorm when you take office. There are Americans who understand this and will support you provided YOU speak and enact the truth. The truth is what this country sorely needs.

    No, Obama is no middle

No, Obama is no middle manager. He may very well be the most adept and visionary American politician since Lincoln. What is even more significant than the "usual suspects" he has picked for the top is the network of "unusual suspects" -- i.e., people like you and me -- who comprise his network at the bottom. Unlike most folks who clamor for change, Obama may have the skill to bring it ... by neutralizing empire at the top and summoning political awareness, wisdom and activism at the bottom. We are used to having our ideals as lofty, unattainable platitudes. Obama is determined to make it real. He is a leader in multiple ways ... he is highly-functional, takes no stuff from no one, and sets his own course. He will listen to his cabinet and advisers, and when all is said and done, it will be said and done by him. Now I may be overly optimistic but maybe not. I'm beginning to see this individual's skill and foundational decency. Go read his interview four years ago with the religious writer at the Chicago Sun-Times, and you will see an individual with the spiritual sophistication to pull this off. Let's check back in a year or so ...
