Be the Change

Be the change that you want to see in the world.
- Mohandas Gandhi

Our federal government is utterly corrupt; we are confronted by creeping fascism and our environment is imperiled. The problems are real and solutions are few. There is a sense of futility and anger that becomes an oppression unto itself.

Of all things lost these past eight years, none has left a greater void than the departure of our national dignity. We have become a fundamentally unjust society, some say, always were.

People always vote for change. Every vote is cast in the belief that it will make a difference, that things can change. But no vote ever brings about change. Change, real, meaningful, lasting change, is always human. Both subtle and enormous real change comes from a sense of empowerment in the hearts and minds of those who seek it.

The election of Barack Obama may not guarantee change. but has already created that sense of empowerment. People walked away from the election saying and believing, "si, se puede" (yes, we can). The critical word being "we."

Yesterday, in a spontaneous fit of rage, an Iraqi journalist attending a press conference with George W. Bush stood and hurled his shoes at Bush.[1] Bush then remarked, "I don't know what the guy's cause is." His cause is the liberation of his people and his land from foreign occupiers. There is much to change.

Nothing could be more critical to the restoration of American democracy than the restoration of the rule of law. Specifically in the nation's capitol. The Bush administration and the Republican Congressional power structure made a mockery of the law beginning the day the towers fell. Even now, they look untouchable. There is much to change.

Forty million Americans have no health insurance and the vast majority of those who do have no rights in dealing with their health care provider. Congress could long ago have fixed all of that. Congress has chosen instead to do the bidding of the health care industry, ignoring all the suffering that could have been prevented. There is much to change.

A new president has been elected. Fairly so, in fact. The new president is popular with the people and comes to office with much support. However, he alone cannot bring about the changes the people seek. It will take more than an act of change; it will take a sea of change, not from the seat of power, but from the powerless.

Those who seek change must be the first to change and lead by example. Others will follow. Each day brings a new opportunity to interact in a new and positive way. We can demand better; we can show more respect for those who toil and have little; we can ask simple, but powerful questions.

If the movement fails, the leaders will fail with it. If the nation changes, so will those in power. Early in his campaign, Barack Obama said, "We are the ones we've been waiting for."

Yes, we can; yes, we must.

If we do not keep the

If we do not keep the momentum going, if we do not feed the machine that has begun to roll forward, we will surely lose the window opened to us. We will indeed need to be stoic in the future months, this is not going to be easy. It will take belief in our leaders, belief in ourselves and a craving for leaving a new legacy to our children. One worth saving. It is time to resurrect the American dream not for one generation but for perpetuity. This once great nation is not complete yet and it is not over either. It is just realizing what it can do and will do to build our children, and grandchildren's futures. The Constitution is waiting for us to heal it's wounds. I, for one, am ready. We can and yes we must.

WAIT ONE MINUTE!! MR. Ash,

WAIT ONE MINUTE!! MR. Ash, as always, is very correct BUT our national reality has been in the hands demonic monsters NOT because I and millions of others have not been doing our level best to spiritually become the community of world brotherhood which this country and planet should have been many decades ago. This country has gone to hell literally and figuratively because approximately 200,000 rich white demonic men have been leading the rest of the planet there. It is very simple - we are, by and large, better human beings and nicer guys/gals than we have ever been but the hellborn demons with the real power simply will not let it happen. This is why it is absolutely imperative that we put a fairly large number of them in jail NOW. This is not vengeance - it is psychosocial necessity. We need to have a sense of closure with justice to the most traumatic and dangerous period ever brought to our country by evil selfish men and that will only happen with jail time for the criminals who have stolen maybe up to 12 trillion dollars from the planet. Impeach them and put them in jail now and our goodness and natural spirituality will flow beautifully and the world will feel it immediately.

"I don't know what the guy's

"I don't know what the guy's cause is." GWBush My God! He's really as dumb as we thought.

As creepy as the things Bush

As creepy as the things Bush et al. are doing in their final days in office (and there are a lot of them), it's time to move on. Hating him and all his works is a distraction. I didn't make it to any of the meetings the weekend just past, but suggest we look to the future. Speaking of which, Bush himself should make sure that guy is freed. He showed his best side by taking the shoes with humor, but that will be erased if he allows the guy to be persecuted.

Be the change? Easier said

Be the change? Easier said than done. Many of my friends and I relentlessly call, email, send letters, petition, march, join, donate, volunteer -- all to seemingly no avail. It's as though elected officials are deaf. They put their finger into the political winds and do what they think is best for their next campaigns. My Democratic congressman said recently after thousands of his constituents contacted him about an issue (doesn't matter which one, he does what he wants anyway) urging him to vote NO-- "The responses ranged from 'No!' to 'Hell no!' But, I voted for it anyway." (Rick Larsen (D-WA) I'm not one to throw up my hands in despair, and I will not give up or give in, but "be the change?" Get real, Marc Ash. Nothing is going to change until there is a revolution, which might actually happen as more people join the ranks of the un- and underemployed.

It would be more accurate to point the finger of blame at the bi-patisan collection of idiots in Congress...

All I can say to that is

All I can say to that is "Amen"! Let's keep our eye on the ball, America.

Right on the head. The

Right on the head. The lines could not be clearer, since Reagan came into office the right has implemented a slow and painful strategy to completely dismantle organized labor, deregulate and further empower corporate culture, privatize every sector of our society, and smash down the middle class. The only thing they didn't consider is where they should relocate their economic model when the working class no longer has enough money to support the massive weight of consumerism. Bush said himself, after the most devastating event in US history, "go shop". The real power, we the people (the real working folks in this country) have is to stop purchasing. We need to bring back the true meaning of community, we could all take a lesson from the Amish.

HOW? There is absolutely no

HOW? There is absolutely no substance in this article. Obama says more about how he would bring about change and he hardly says anything. This kind of analysis is called "thumb sucking," it has no point, or rather it has no solutions

Power is not taken from above, it is granted from below.

From here in France, many of us are (a) happy to see that Iraqi throw his shows at your current President - and dismayed by his response (NB Le Figaro reckons there was much blood on the floor after the guy was tackled by"security"); and (b) that you elected Obama. All that Mr Ash is saying is - "Don't sit on your buts, waiting for the government to do something - that's what the French have done for years, Heyho!" You're getting signals already of the way the incoming President is moving. Just help make it happen. Not by emails and phone-calls but by getting out there and using your brains and hands as best you can. We love you, really!

It's always nice to see an upbeat story to prepare us for the holidays.

Executive Director Ash, I

Executive Director Ash, I am no Jonah Goldberg. Nor would I describe myself as a so called 'cherry picking' reader of the news. I must say however that I got as far as the first sentence of your article "Be The Change" -"Our 'federal' government is utterly corrupt;"- when I realized I had read quite enough of it. No sir, the real truth is that our whole government, from top to bottom, is utterly corrupt, and everyone in it is part of the same 'team'. There is not one shred of difference in either point of view or action separating the President, Governor, Mayor, High School Administrator, Department of Social Services Counselor, Department of Mental Health Specialist, Police Department Investigator, etc. Nor can there be. No, they are all agents of the same lying, self serving, and captious cabal, and what is most outrageous about it is that they truly believe in what they are doing (to us)! Be the change. Disengage. Lukasavage

Dear Sir, That is an

Dear Sir, That is an inspiring article. However, I beg to differ with you on one point. Where you say "Nothing could be more critical to the restoration of American democracy than the restoration of the rule of law.", I would rather believe the end of that phrase should read: ".... the restoration of Mores". As a lawyer I know that falling back on the rule of law is the ultimate remedy when Morality and Mores have sorrily failed. However, the law in practice is malleable under those circumstances, as is proven time and again by governments and big corporate interests. But genuine, deep human values and conscience and decency aren't. The vital margin between Mores and Law, which is the hallmark of true civilization, has eroded completely, not just in the USA but in the whole Western world. It has been sacrificed on the altar of our economies.b If this crisis doesn't open our eyes for this appalling truth, even Obama can't save us.

If the president-elect

If the president-elect facilitates the kind of vast, sweeping change that many believe he will, I'll be the first to congratulate him. Right now, however, it pays to be wary. "Yes, We Can" was fine as a campaign slogan, but the campaign is over and Obama has assembled a national security team which lacks even a single antiwar voice (and has been praised by Dick Cheney as "a pretty good team", which ought to furrow more than a few brows). Are we to believe that this is part of some complicated, ultimately beneficial strategy we common folk just can't understand? Or are we adult enough to take the president-elect's cabinet selections at face value and say, "Hey, this doesn't look so good"? Undoubtedly, we the people have an obligation to bring about change--but so do our elected representatives. There has to be at least a modicum of assurance that they are going to act in our best interests when they get to Washington.
