Cheney's Legacy of Deception

In the end, the shame of Vice President Dick Cheney was total: unmitigated by any notion of a graceful departure, let alone the slightest obligation of honest accounting. Although firmly ensconced, even in the popular imagination, as an example of evil incarnate - nearly a quarter of those polled in this week's CNN poll rated him the worst vice president in U.S. history, and 41 percent as "poor" - Cheney exudes the confidence of one fully convinced that he will get away with it all.

And why not? Nothing, not his suspect role in the Enron debacle, which foretold the economic meltdown, or his office's fabrication of the false reasons for invading Iraq, has ever been seriously investigated, because of White House stonewalling. Nor will the new president, committed as he is to nonpartisanship, be likely to open up Cheney's can of worms.

Cheney has even had a pass on torture, the "enhanced interrogation" policy that he initiated in his first months in office. "Was it torture? I don't believe it was torture," he told The Washington Times on Monday, a week after the release of a unanimous Senate report concluding that the policies Cheney initiated indeed were responsible for torture. In fact, the Senate committee concluded that the model for the Cheney-Bush interrogation policy was the torture practices of the Chinese communists during the Korean War. But it's not torture when the U.S. president does it, according to the legal judgments that Cheney's chief counsel, David Addington, pushed through the administration.

Fortunately, Cheney's view of the unquestioned unitary power of the presidency was scorned by Vice President-elect Joe Biden: "His notion of a unitary executive" Biden said, "meaning that, in time of war, essentially all power, you know, goes to the executive I think is dead wrong."

With Biden occupying Cheney's old office and presumably his secret bunkers as well, maybe we will, at last, learn a bit more of the nefarious truth about the man. One place to start is with the statement of retired U.S. Army Col. Larry Wilkerson, who was Colin Powell's chief of staff and who stated unequivocally that Cheney was the primary author of the torture policy: "There's no question in my mind where the philosophical guidance and the flexibility in order to do so originated - in the vice president of the United States' office."

That lame-duck Cheney was bellowing his claim of innocence in a series of friendly interviews should have been expected. For he, like the president he served, can use the self-proclaimed "global war on terror" as a convenient cover for eight years of treachery on all fronts: "If you think about what Abraham Lincoln did during the Civil War, what FDR did during World War II; they went far beyond anything we've done in a global war on terror."

Actually, neither of those presidents authorized the waterboarding of prisoners or the other explicit acts of torture approved by this administration largely under the vice president's direction. But the true absurdity of Cheney's self-defense is in placing the nebulous war on terror at the same level of threat as the civil war that tore apart this country or the Nazi military machine that rumbled unstoppable across most of Europe, augmented by the military might of Japan.

The invocation of a "global war on terror" is a big-lie propaganda device that has no grounding in reality. The proof that "terrorism" does not exist as an enemy identifiable by commonality of structure, purpose and leadership comparable to the World War II Axis or the Confederacy can be found in its use as a target to justify the invasion of Iraq. An invasion billed as a response to the 9/11 attacks, which had nothing to do with Iraq.

The Bush administration, with Cheney in the lead, did not so much fight the danger of terrorism as exploit it for partisan political purpose. The record is quite clear that the administration was asleep at the switch before 9/11, blithely ignoring stark warnings of an impending attack. But the hoary warmongering after 9/11 afforded a convenient distraction from the economic problems at home. As I asked in a column on June 26, 2002: "Has the war on terrorism become the modern equivalent of the Roman circus, drawing the people's attention away from the failures of those who rule them? Corporate America is a shambles because deregulation, the mantra of our president and his party, has proved to be a license to steal."

That is the true legacy of Dick Cheney and the president he ill-served.

Just as a corporation runs

Just as a corporation runs from top down, it's secrets known to just a few, so did the Bush administration. The problem was, and is, that the US government is not a corporation, and must never come to resemble one. But it currently does resemble one, not only in the toady structure disguised as merit-based, but in the ill-advised and unethical pursuit of its own gain at the expense of everyone else. Let me be clear: there is no other structure that society allows to exist that is as single purpose as the corporation is in it's search for profit, where no "expense" is too great. Fortunately for the vast majority of Americans there are term limits because we couldn't stand another four years of this reckless and cancerous administration. The simultaneous meltdown of a large portion of corporate America and the Bush administration is a wonderful lesson in the linkage that exists, the revolving door of business and government, and how as our government increasingly resembles a corporate operation, it's decisions and their impact on American lives grows dire. And, of course, Dick Cheney is the poster "CEO" of the whole enterprise. Congratulations, Mr. Cheney, you have set the definitive example of what we must never allow to happen again. May the entire Bush administration be outsourced to the Middle East to clear land mines and DU shells.

His foundation was

His foundation was egomaniacal arrogance. His goal never was to serve the public--but only those back-slappers in his own clique and cocktail circuit, energy barons and their ilk. And in some overall way, there was perpetuation of a an elite ruling class to consider . . . and the pandering of unrestricted big business. And to those ends, he justified to himself the means he employed.

It does not matter if the

It does not matter if the culprit is Dick Cheney, George Bush or anyone else. The Law of Karma is the ultimate justice at the end of our lives. Karma is "ACTION", the actions that we performed in our life on earth. If a person's actions were good and loving which helped others, a just reward is given to the person who has performed those acts. By the same token, if a person, any person, commits an act that is evil, or harmful to another person of group, that is called Negative Karma and and they will be dealt with according to their actions. When one dies each person is faced with what their life amounted to. The record of every thought word and deed that they performed is made known and is placed before them. God does not judge us. In effect we judge ourselves. So, saints and sinners face the same justice. Our life is what ever we have made, and there are no secrets and no lies. We will all face this. So don't worry about the Dick Cheneys of the world. They will have to answer for themselves.

I hate to break it to you,

I hate to break it to you, Michael, but what Molly Ivins (may her warrior soul find peace in the clearing) used to call "our only government" has been "com[ing] to resemble" a corporation for a hella long time. It started in 1886, when J.C. Bancroft Davis, saying what none of the Supreme Court had the balls to say in re Santa Clara County v. Southern Pacific Railroad, effectively decreed that it was unconstitutional to deny corporations the rights of natural persons, and equally unconstitutional to expect these artificial persons to shoulder any of the responsibilities associated with natural persons' exercise of those rights. Every day this absurdity was allowed to stand, the corporatization of government (and the associated privatization of profit and socialization of loss) became 24 hours more entrenched, with results we only need to look around us to see.

Cheney remunds me of Hitlers

Cheney remunds me of Hitlers Goebbels. Evil!

What Abraham Lincoln did to

What Abraham Lincoln did to this nation is beyond imagining: starting an unnecessary war, laying waste to hundreds of towns and cities along with crops and farm animals leaving the women and children to starve, deporting or imprisoning Members of Congress and members of state legislatures for disagreeing with his obviously unconstitutional policies, imprisoning private individuals merely for openly wishing for peace, using the US Army to destroy the newspaper presses whose owners dared to print anything against the war or Lincoln, all of this and more in the name of centralizing government power in Washington. Abraham Lincoln makes Dick Cheney and His Dismal Irrelevance (GWB) look like Mary Freaking Poppins. Get your facts straight. Read The Real Lincoln by Thomas DiLorenzo. I hope that Mr. Obama has read the book and is equating himself with the myth of Lincoln that we all have been hopelessly brainwashed to believe, rather than the actual man.

His link with the coming

His link with the coming depression is uncanny!! I am convinced that we will be demanded to begin paying karma for our intolerable arrogance and confortable duplicity with the demon chenney and the rest of the band of escapees from hell. If we allow them to go free this will be our last statement as a people with any valor or consciousness and the cosmos and God cannot let this go by unnoticed, as if they were complicit with us in our lack of courage and dishonorable ways. If we let them go free we are telling humanity and the rest of the universe "they really did represent us and we are no better than them". And the cosmnos and God will answer with the most spectacular depression in history and we will not be able to say ANYTHING except we had it coming for not distancing ourselves more from these demons incarnated as make-believe leaders. We will deserve to share the suffering of paying for their sins because we were too cowardly to stand up to them and say, "No sir! You go straight to jail, do not pass go and do not collect your ten trillion dollars stolen from us; go to jail NOW". And if demonic Pelosi wants to get in the way we send her there too! Otherwise prepare to pay someone elseΒ΄s very heavy karma in the coming depression...

Go to

Go to http://www.velvetrevolution.us/ for info on the prosecution of Cheney, Diebold (where there has been progress in Maryland), and the long road we have traveled to free former Alabama Governor Don Siegelman who was fraudulently jailed by Cheney and Karl Rove. There is a lot of pushing back going on and Obama knows about it.

With all the recent carping

With all the recent carping about Cheney's unrepentant attitude, why do we not see journalists like Mr. Scheer call for an inquiry into Cheney's involvement in the planning and execution of the 9/11 attacks? We all know he was up to his eyeballs running fake "drills" and "military exercises" from the PEOC bunker; drills that involved hijacked airplanes crashing into buildings. Could there possibly be a coincidence here, eh? Who will be the first journalist to pussy-foot up to the subject? Unless America confronts the reality of the 9/11 "attacks" that provided the basis for not only the "wars" in Iraq and Afghanistan, but also the destruction of the United States Constitution, we will never regain our freedom. Instead, we will succumb further to the military coup that took place on that day.

These were the guys who were

These were the guys who were going to "change the tone" in Washington, remember that? They sure did: they made it worse. Dick Cheney actually said "Go fuck yourself" to a U.S. Senator on the floor of the U.S. Senate. How's that for decent, upstanding values? I wonder what it says in the Congressional Record. Did they get around this with the coy use of asterisks? If you can't quote the actual words of the Vice President in polite company, how decent is he, really?

It would be ashamed to let

It would be ashamed to let Bush and Cheney get away of putting this country threw eight years of hell. Why anyone is a Republican is way beyond my understanding.

If Cheney (and Bush) is not

If Cheney (and Bush) is not held accountable for his actions, then it is to the shame of all Americans. So much for being that "shining city on the hill" that Reagan proclaimed was the US. There is no way one can be cynical enough when viewing American history. I am just so tired of the lies.

Grover Norquist said it

Grover Norquist said it best, "We'll force the government into a deep hole of debt so that it won't be able to fund social programs like social security, medicare, education, health care, etc." They have succeeded in what they set out to do and even today have 40 million voting supporters. Our dear Pentagon is planning to increase its defense budget by one-third (i.e. budget=1.5 trillion per year). Our spy agencies are going to increase theirs by who knows how much? The great thing about these neocons and their supporters is that they hate what made us truly a great nation: liberty, freedom, respect for the Constitution, and a very prosperous middle and working class, which hatred shows that they are, fundamentally, traitors and morons both. We need to pressure, every goddamn day, our weak-kneed pathetic representatives to punish these criminals and to suppress our ever-growing militarism. We want prosperity, not war.

No, the administration was

No, the administration was not "asleep at the switch before 9/11". Why does the media seem to always want to stay away from seriously discussing the complicity of those in high positions within our Government in the 9/11 attacks? Where is the open discussion about how the USG created, supported and used Al Qaeda? And how about the USG's relationship with Pakistan's ISI and the close working relationship they had in supporting the Mujaheddin (which later became the Taliban) against the Soviets, as well as the ISI's key role in organizing, supporting and funding the 9/11 terrorists? There are simply too many indicators that show that there were those in the USG that knew that 9/11 was going to happen and in fact were complicit in its execution. Clearly Cheney was part of this, but he certainly was no lone gunman - he was part of a cabal, all members of which need to be ruthlessly hunted down and exterminated before they can engage in further treasonous actions against America.

Obama isn't president yet.

Obama isn't president yet.

Puppetry!! Another name for

Puppetry!! Another name for American Foreign Policy! But then one has to ask was Bush the Puppetier or was he Dick's Puppet? Or! Was Dick the "Driving Puppet" for a much higher echelon of Puppet Masters in the Higher Ranks of the New World Order or Corporatocracy of the So Called American Democracy???

It is imperative that

It is imperative that Bush/Cheney/Rumsfeld/Wolfowitz/Rove/Rice, etc. are all investigated, indicted, prosecuted, and end up in jail, or end up arrested overseas in some country they dare travel to. Just think: Bush, in his hubris, does not plan to pardon anyone, because no crimes, in their opinion, were committed, so there's nothing there to pardon! If these un-American traitors are not held accountable for their crimes they will spend the next four years going on the TV, going in front of the American Enterprise Institute, Cato, Hoover, etc. spreading their propaganda, criticizing any progressive or peace-leaning legislation, trashing Obama any time they can, and getting ready to groom others (Jeb Bush, Sarah Palin, Mitt Romney?)to take their place in 2012! They haven't ripped off America enough, as greed knows no bounds!

Cheney is clearly Bush's

Cheney is clearly Bush's puppet-master/handler. However, Cheney is but a member of the cabal (albeit likely a senior one) that is destroying America and working towards building a global Fascist/corporatist dictatorship. Note that Bush Sr. is almost certainly a member of that cabal, but not his son.

It is still quite scary to

It is still quite scary to realise that somewhere near 40% of American voters are still skipping down the primrose path of fascism still supporting republican criminals and their propaganda spewing bought mouthpieces. This bodes for a lengthy depression.

"The truth about his

"The truth about his involvement in the Valerie Plame scandal ..." I make a conjecture that Chaney outed Valerie Plame not because of her husband's report, but because she was spreading truths about the justification for the Iraq War and wasn't backing down. Was it a shot across the bow to any CIA analyst who wasn't "on the team"?

don't forget kiddies who put

don't forget kiddies who put this monster in charge of the henhouse? none other than one of the most evil men on the planet! DADDY BUSH!!!. if we fail to hold these evil men accountable for their rape and pillaging and looting of america and the world we will have failed as a democracy.

My question is and continues

My question is and continues to be: WHERE is/was Congress? Why has Congress not investigated "his office's fabrication of the false reasons for invading Iraq" and so much more? Why did Congress not impeach Cheney? Congress has the power and did not use it. To allow both Cheney and Bush to leave office without being impeached is a tragedy for our nation and the world. What a legacy to leave for our grandchildren and great-grandchildren to come! I believe in justice and to have not used the power Congress has to bring justice to both these individuals is a mystery to me. Yes, I know: "The votes are not there." Well, if I were a member of Congress, I would want to go down in history as having tried!

The defendant Cheney will

The defendant Cheney will answer to the charge of counseling, countenancing, and facilitating crimes against humanity. I mut remind the defendant that he must answer "guilty" or "not guilty"

Sanitized Horror. Think of

Sanitized Horror. Think of the murderous filth Cheney has engineered. Think of one dead child or the screams of the tortured. The Republican Party is properly called the War Profiteers party. It must also be understood as comprised of anti-Constitutional legislators. Most democrats are "collaborators" just as the Vichy-French were. The remedy is the same as it has always been: Democratic transparency and Rule of Law. The populist tide behind Obama is the key. If Citizens do not insist now on indictments and trials of key members of the Bush Administration we will be drawn into repeating what happened in Nazi Germany.

Cheney and Bush will avoid

Cheney and Bush will avoid accountability for war crimes committed in my name and that, to me, is so abhorrent as to be the real travesty. Our loss of civil rights, forced on us claiming "national security" needs which was/is a lie but they will never be restored in my lifetime. To be an American and have to tell my son how "it used to be" in our own country brings anger and frustration. Even lawful dissent is now called "domestic terrorism", and our own government can, and will, "disappear" you. Au Revoir, Cheney and Bush; may you be brought to justice at some point.

The amazing thing is not

The amazing thing is not that Cheney and friends are completely and unashamedly un-American. They were out to line their pockets, and they did. The amazing thing is that almost ninety percent of Americans held these creeps to be "excellent", "patriots", claimed they were doing "a great job" and a large part of them reelected the gangsters. THAT'S what troubles me. Remember 2003, when a lot of us were protesting the planned war? Communists and traitors is what we were called by the people who sold out America, are responsible for a million and more deaths and ended up socializing bank, insurance companies and other scammers who grabbed what they could while the grabbing was good. There are lots of nights now I wake up shaking my head.

Well I guess his buddies

Well I guess his buddies within the CFR sees him as a hero. Hey, did you guys realize the CFR controls Washington.

I always assumed the primary

I always assumed the primary justification for the Iraq invasion was to create a war presidency so Cheney could be the puppetmaster and Bush could assume control. Noone every says so, though. All the rest follows; they looked for a war to start so they could ignore the law.

Bush, Cheyney, Wolfowitz,

Bush, Cheyney, Wolfowitz, Addington, Yoo and others are war criminals! The US Congress is too intimidated or timid to bring any action against any of them. President-Elect Obama knows that going after any of them for the crimes committed will consume all or most of his four years and possibly deny him a second term. But the people of the US have an alternative: The World Court. Pinochet, Malovavich(sp) any any one of assorted African dictators have been or will be tried in the World Court. It will take a dedicated group of Americans to petition the Court. From their website the following criteria is listed: Causes of Action 1. To be entitled to begin an action in the World Court of Justice, an applicant must show that 1. he has suffered an injustice or is about to suffer an injustice at the hands of another person and 2. the case is within the jurisdiction of the court. Very simple. Which group of Americans will stand up and initiate the charge?

Cheney's Legacy of Deception

Cheney's Legacy of Deception will live on until his can of worms are exposed. It is obvious that Cheney has long represented the private enterprise interests of corporations who have been running this nation rather than government or people, for a long time. This cancer must be finally cut from the body politics. Obama faces too many obstacles. TheCIA is the biggest problem and Cheney's secret shadow government which is also a long story which seems to have died from the historical memory of Americans and the media. Obama need not take this man on - we must, as citizens of this dying nation who want justice for all that this arrogant horrible Cheney deserves - else, the lineage will continue and the evil continue to spread. The American people must be educated about what Cheney and his group have done and will continue to do unless we face up to the truth.

Perhaps the circus is

Perhaps the circus is touching us far worse than your June 2002 observation, Mr. Scheer, : "Has the war on terrorism become the modern equivalent of the Roman circus, drawing the people's attention away from the failures of those who rule them? Corporate America is a shambles because deregulation, the mantra of our president and his party, has proved to be a license to steal." The corrupt elites, regardless of their partisan color, keep doing what they do best : thumb their noses at us and spin the simplest truths. Fools that we are, divided we stand, pleased to be entertained. Not unlike the Roman citizens kept quiet by lavish spectacles of circus, our corrupt elites have built the ultimate Circus Maximus of empty freedoms and rights. They let us march, scream our demands, write to the local paper, assemble at town halls and vote. Nobody takes much notice. The show goes on…Rights and Circus. What was done in the name of the s0-called war on terrorism under the pretext of "protecting" us from attack will not be undone. This time the pretext is the convenient desire to unify, "non-partisanship", the same disregard for the people's opinion: we the elites know best! You the people had your best chance at governing: we let you vote, now let us entertain you, as we see fit! Damn your principles and the truth, we are the deciders.
