Brasilia, Brazil - Brazilian police on Friday detained a rancher suspected in the slaying of rain forest activist Dorothy Stang for allegedly illegally acquiring titles to land the U.S. nun died trying to defend.

The detention of Regivaldo Galvao at his home in the Amazon state of Para could lead to the reopening of the case in the death of Stang, who was shot in 2005 amid a dispute with ranchers over land she wanted brought under federal protection.

A police report seen by The Associated Press says Galvao was detained Friday in Altamira after a judge ordered his capture in an investigation into whether he forged titles to land where the 73-year-old nun was killed.

Prosecutors contend that Galvao and another rancher hired men to kill Stang over the disputed Amazon land. Galvao was arrested in 2005, but he was freed on bail by Brazil's Supreme Court in 2006 and he has since used appeals to avoid trial.

Galvao has denied any role in Stang's death, arguing he had no interest in the lands Stang was defending.

But prosecutors say that in November he went before Brazil's Incra land reform agency to present documents showing he owns the disputed land and wants it back - casting doubt on one of his main alibis.

Prosecutor Felicio Pontes told the AP in November that the land where Stang was killed is public property, and if Galvao claimed to own it, the case against him could be reopened.

A second rancher accused in Stang's murder, Vitalmiro Moura, was sentenced to 30 years in prison in May 2007. But Moura's sentence was overturned earlier this year after a gunmen confessed to killing Stang and said he acted alone. Gunman Rayfran das Neves Sales was sentenced to 28 years in prison.

Stang was born in Dayton, Ohio, and spent three decades trying to preserve the rain forest and defending the rights of poor settlers who confronted powerful ranchers seeking their lands in the Amazon's wild frontier.

AP was unable to immediately contact Galvao.

What a brave human being She

What a brave human being She was and I know that she is in a special place. Thank you Sister Stang

Does this remind anybody

Does this remind anybody (again!) of the many all too similar murders (the Mendez case?) that keep occuring in Brazil even under a supposedly leftist progressive govt.? Russia-on-the-Amazon. To know this and willingly engage in seeking social change at peril to one's life is a courage that I can say I understand but that in truth I really don't and I'm in deep awe of those like this lady Stang who seem to possess it. At least she shows us that there is hope for the future...Thanks from tjise (one) too afraid to do what is right...Happy new year!

What a good woman Stang was.

What a good woman Stang was. May she be remembered for pursuing justice and peace. Thank you for looking out for the Earth. I hope she has inspired others to continue where she left off.

Ms. Stang was trying to

Ms. Stang was trying to protect all life on the planet when she was murdered by someone who put greed first. How sad her death was for all those who must have adored her for coming to their assistance in standing up to major corporations set to wreck the Amazon. I hope all Americans will now finally take notice of this and other important stories about land issues. War and poverty are of course very important, but the question of who owns public lands or who has a right to sell of natural resources is also vitally important to our survival on the planet. Right now we are seeing states like Minn., NY, getting ready to SELL OFF public lands, parks, and roadways. It is very important that everyone who can object does object. Complain that state parks and infrastructure were paid for by state and federal taxes. They do not belong to politicians to sell. Any public land or infrastructure sales plan should go before state legislatures and come to a vote where residents can obtain vital information. Congress should investigate. What could happen if these public lands are sold off without a vote and extensive investigations into necessary oversight? Take a look at what's happening to states like Tenn. where the coal industry has wrecked havoc on land and homes and causes an environmental catastrophe with a sludge spill. These coal companies that have been wantonly blowing the tops off of mountains should be stopped too before it's too late. Americans can rally together and start organizing against greedy corporate interests. Otherwise they will completely wreck the environment, take us beyond the tipping point we are already at! These energy corporations feel empowered by the global energy emergencies, but what politicians appear to be missing is the fact that these are the companies that got us into this mess in the first place, doing so much damage that we may not be able to bring the Earth back to sustainability.
