A Hundred Eyes for an Eye

Israelis and Arabs "feel that only force can assure justice," I. F. Stone noted soon after the Six-Day War in 1967. And he wrote, "A certain moral imbecility marks all ethnocentric movements. The Others are always either less than human, and thus their interests may be ignored, or more than human and therefore so dangerous that it is right to destroy them."

The closing days of 2008 have heightened the Israeli government's stature as a mighty practitioner of the moral imbecility that Stone described.

Israel's airstrikes "have killed at least 270 people so far, injured more than 1,000, many of them seriously, and many remain buried under the rubble so the death toll will likely rise," Phyllis Bennis, of the Institute for Policy Studies, pointed out on Sunday, two days into Israel's attack. "This catastrophic impact was known and inevitable, and far outweighs any claim of self-defense or protection of Israeli civilians." She mentioned "the one Israeli killed by a Palestinian rocket attack on Saturday after the Israeli assault began was the first such casualty in more than a year."

Even if you set aside the magnitude of Israel's violations of the Geneva conventions and the long terrible history of its methodical collective punishment of 1.5 million Palestinians in Gaza, consider the vastly disproportionate carnage in the conflict.

"An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind," Gandhi said.

What about a hundred eyes for an eye?

It makes some of the world ill with rage. And it turns much of the United States numb with silence. Routinely, the politicians and pundits of Washington can't summon minimal decency in themselves or each other on the subject of Israel and Palestinians.

While officialdom inside the Beltway seems frozen in fear of risking "anti-Semitism" charges by actually standing up for the human rights of Palestinian people, some progress at the grassroots level has been noticeable. It includes the growth of groups such as Jewish Voice for Peace, Tikkun and The Shalom Center, where activists have worked to refute the false claims that American Jews are united behind Israeli policies.

At the epicenters of the conflict - where the belief that "only force can assure justice" seems to be even stronger than when I. F. Stone wrote about it 41 years ago - the conclusion has been drawn and redrawn so many times that deadly repetition has become paralytic. While some Palestinian "militants" have terrorized and murdered, the Israeli government has terrorized and murdered on a much bigger scale, using a vast arsenal largely financed by US taxpayers.

From afar, in the United States, it's too easy to shake our heads at the lethal loss of moral vision. Don't they know that "an eye for an eye makes the whole world blind"? But the cycle of violence is extremely asymmetrical - while the US government provides Israel with billions of dollars and invaluable "diplomatic" support.

What's going on in Gaza right now is not just an eye for an eye. It's a hundred eyes for an eye. And the current slaughter is not only an ongoing Israeli war crime. It has an accomplice named Uncle Sam.

"Routinely, the politicians

"Routinely, the politicians and pundits of Washington can't summon minimal decency in themselves or each other on the subject of Israel and Palestinians." The United States of Israel We are in concert with Israel. What else is new.

The United States has seen

The United States has seen fit to take sides, and this is at the root of the seemingly intractable conflict. Mr. Solomon and the people he quotes are quite right, and how refreshing it is to hear slaughter called slaughter, since we certainly can't expect objectivity in the US. The Israelis must enjoy being the oppressors after so many years of being oppressed. And the cowardly Congress here must enjoy those bribe checks. I mean campaign contributions.

Again Leftwing Anti Semitism

Again Leftwing Anti Semitism reigns. The Palestinian people elected Hamas an organization which at it's core is the destruction of "the Jewish State of Israel". They condone firing of rockets into civilian areas. Hamas canceled the truce . Doers this person forget how Syria dealt with the Palestinian state: Or the fact that it was the Palestinian leadership that refused the Carter settlement

An extremely one sided

An extremely one sided article. The author proposed no solution for the daily rocket and mortar attacks on Israeli citizens nor did he explain how Israel is going to make peace with Hamas, an organization whose stated goals is the destruction of the State of Israel. Frankly the idea that for a war to be 'fair' both sides should be roughly equal is absurd. While I disagree with the Israel's settlement policy and other activities that make it harder to reach an agreement with the Palestinians, I think Israels response to the provocation of Hamas is justified and an action that any democratic state would pursue given the same circumstances.

This is an obscenely vicious

This is an obscenely vicious outrage. They kill hundreds. They have one or two casualties, and the world is supposed to fall to its knees and weep for Israel. May God speak to the heart of Obama, and take him to see the slaughter firsthand, so he begins to GET IT!! This brutality towards the Palestinians, whose land they have stolen since 1948, nearly all of it, is the shame of the world. Imagine being a Palestinian child, wondering why NO ONE seems to care?

The problem with the moral

The problem with the moral myopeia of the article is that it deludes people into believing that all Israel needs to do is to sit down with Hamas and everything will be alright. Also the author's underlying premise from I.F. Stone, that ethnicity leads to imbecilic war (what war doesn't conjure up visions of madness?) is facile and culturally ignorant.

How Jewish people, who have

How Jewish people, who have suffered so much over centuries, can inflict so much pain on others and disregard lives of other human beings?!

Hamas says in its charter

Hamas says in its charter that the destruction of Israel is its unalterable goal. How any human being can talk about violations of the Geneva convention by Israel who is defending her citizens as best she can in view this position by Hamas is beyond me. Does Mr. Solomon not know that it is Hamas who chooses the position of its rocket launchers - so if they place them amid civilians, civilians are going to be killed. This seems to me is THEIR responsibility; in addition to being the aggressors in every hostility that has occurred from the inception of Israel. Where has Mr. solomon studied ethics and/or international law?

I hope I am not abusing your

I hope I am not abusing your hospitality by posting a second comment. This one is directed at the I. F. Stone quote. There are people who do not react to anything but force, certainly not to reasoning. It is the people who advocate "peace talks" and "accommodations" who are the imbecils in my opinion, because for both you need a WILLING partner, and such a partner is not to be found among people who have as their goal the destruction of the ones who are counseled to seek accommodations. The only accommodation the Arabs of Palestine would accept is for Israel to destroy herself. Would those who dish out that kind of advice take it themselves?

Funny how this is coming in

Funny how this is coming in the last days of the Bush Regime, just before a president-elect who is more willing to listen to both sides of the conflict and actually attempt to broker peace between them is sworn in.

Norman Solomon presents a

Norman Solomon presents a very clear view of the psychology of this attack. Israeli politicians deliberately used a disproportionate amount of force to show that they are not a "paper tiger" and the Palestinians should be scared into submission. the language was, "they are not afraid of us anymore, let's show them!" A country which supplies $2B in aid and the religious fundamentalists who support Israel unconditionally are just as much to blame as the Israeli government. By the way, criticizing a bully is not anti-Semitism.

What a relief, Norman

What a relief, Norman Soloman, for echoing my mind. I feel like a saavy Chicken Little, racing around the Web, attempting to remind people that our elected represenatives are accountable. They -- and we -- cannot stay silent on the sidelines; we've all been informed via the 'Net, unlike the WWII holocaust. And our taxpayer $$ are at work in front of our eyes.. Hold your Senators and Congressial Reps feet to the fire. Take a look at the heroic stand Cynthia McKinney just made -- risking her life to bring medical supplies to wounded Gazans through International waters -- only to be detured by the Israeli before they could perhaps save lives. There are no sides here -- disproportionate killing with disproportionate weaponry on a weakened population of mostly refugees is a blatant war crime.

I find it interesting that

I find it interesting that so many people believe Israel is justified in their actions because Hamas says that Israel does not have the right to exist. When has Israel ever stated in words or in actions that the Palestinians also have a right to exist? I find it absurd that people can support Israel's actions against the Palestinian, yet Palestine is condemned for doing the same thing for the same reasons.

This thread encompasses most

This thread encompasses most points of view of the conflict -- except one. For that, please go to Jstreet.org, which explains its mission thus: "J Street is the political arm of the pro-Israel, pro-peace movement. We seek to change the direction of American policy in the Mideast and to broaden the U.S. public and policy debate on the Mideast. We support strong American leadership to end the Arab-Israeli and Palestinian-Israeli conflicts peacefully and diplomatically..." In other words, they are the "antiAIPAC," and let's hope Obama makes their acquaintance!

I agree that Israel is

I agree that Israel is really heavy handed, but there is a mistake here... if you go back to talk about "an eye for an eye" and start comparing the levels of action/response, you will get no where. you can just keep going back further and further. Israeli atrocities committed because of Palestinian militants... but the Palestinians just want their country back... but Israel did come to being in their own ancestral homeland, so they have a right... but they were out of that homeland for centuries and the Palestinians settled there... but the Israelis did offer them land and they said all or nothing... but, of course, would you willingly give up your own land because someone told you to... but, of course, the Palestinians have sworn not to stop until all the jews are "swept into the sea"... That argument has no beginning, and it has no end. And, unfortunately, it is the one always being used.

I believe it is past time

I believe it is past time for the US to cut off all contact with Israel, and that means no more weapons or financial aid. Then, let's see how long it takes both sides to get to the bargaining table and come up with a lasting peace. Israel will have to give up some land, and Hamas will need to stand down and recognize Israel's right to exist.

Israel's War on Gaza

Israel's War on Gaza threatens world peace! Every day Israel grows larger and Palestine grows smaller. They were supposed to share the land of the "Palestinian Mandate" -it's now Israel 80%, Palestinian 20% Israel and US preach a two state solution but they practice the creeping erasure of the Palestinian people. People rebel under such desperate circumstances. Let's hope there is some power to get Israel to stop just like NATO stopped the Serbs from attacking Kosovo.

While we berate Israel for

While we berate Israel for its murder and destruction against Palestine, no one seems to think or mention that this is exactly what the U.S. of A has done to the Iraqi's for almost seven years!!

What is interesting is the

What is interesting is the one sided, and biased, approach taken by Mr. Solomon. Was it not Hamas, who declared recently that it was ending the six month truce brokered by Egypt? Was it not Hamas who immediately thereafter began launching rockets into Israel? Isn’t it curious that the figures released by the Palestinian Authority indicated that almost 300 people were killed, most of them Hamas operatives, and only 15 civilians? Isn’t there a moral imperative, which differentiates between lunching rockets into civilian populations, with the express purpose to kill civilians compared to attempting to pin point military target and inadvertently killing civilians in the same area? The idea of a symmetrical response is ludicrous, as well. Should the US have responded to Pearl Harbor, by only killing the same number of Japanese as there were Americans killed? Indeed, a symmetrical response in the Middle East would “resolve” this problem very quickly, when you compare the number of Israelis compared to the number of Arabs. Isn’t the resolution to this problem to have the Palestinians agree to simply let Israel exist, without rocket attacks and suicide bombers killing its citizens? How would the US react, or France, or Italy, or Russia, or China, or any other country, to its citizens being murdered by a neighboring country sworn to its destruction? The Palestinians have become very adept at igniting violence and then cry outrage when the desired reaction is achieved. Contrary to Mr. Solomon’s position, “minimal decency” would require that the Arab world jointly concur that Israel be permitted to live in peace inside secure borders.

The justifications of

The justifications of slaughter fail by their own standards. For 60 years Israel has pursued "peace thru strength." The Jewish State is arguably the least safe place in the world in the world for a Jew. It could not maintain its place, and overwhelming military might, without U.S. support. And the U.S. too, fights a "war on terror" in which the more power it exercises, the more it helps anti-Americanism throughout the world, including recruitment of terrorists. So I ask everyone who criticized Solomon's piece: What is Israel achieving in this attack? Does the Palestinian body count stop the rockets? Which of Israel's wars won it safety or dignity or respect? What have we learned? That a superior military machine can wipe out command posts at will, with schools and hospitals thrown in? That the "only democracy in the Mideast" is only a democracy for its Jewish citizens? That some will cheer military slaughter with self-righteous indignation and denigration of enemies? We already knew this. Just as Palestinian mothers have known the prospects for their children in a world dominated by "muscular" U.S. and Israeli policy for all the generations following World War II. Say what you want about rockets and anti-Semitism, there is NO hope -- even for Israel -- in the attempt to eliminate Hamas or any of its other enemies.

I agree with "While we

I agree with "While we berate Israel" (post) that not only are we financing this brutal militarism with billions$$ annually, we did indeed eo the exact same thing to Iraq: weakening its population with sanctions and bombing prior to "shock and awe" invasion. All we need to do is look in the mirror, America, to recognize our culpability X2. Thanks

Thanks to Norman Soloman

Thanks to Norman Soloman for having the courage and the decency to express his opinion of the current Israeli atrocites taking place in Gaza at this time. As expected..the anti-Palestinian crowd have been quick to respond to this article..and as expected have used the same old anti-semitism argument to back up their opinions. As always.. no one is allowed to voice any criticism of Israel..no matter how horrific the crimes...and these crimes are horrific..even by the ususal standards of Israel's behaviour in occupied Palestine. Indeed..the catastrophic outcome of Israel's over zealous behaviour was well known... as it always is..ahead of time...and the tired excuse of defense of Israel and protection of her civilians rings hollow. Even with the knowledge that as far as the US goes..Israel can do no wrong..the reality of this unjustifiable slaughter is shocking and sickening. Obviously...Israel continues to enjoy the unconditional support of the US..After all...considering the determination of the Bush administration to declare an illegal and immoral war against an innocent sovereign nation makes it pretty much impossible for them to reprimand Israel for behaving like barbarians. Every thinking man/woman knows that the Israeli lobby in the US is extremely powerful. I turn on the radio..the TV..read the papers and am appalled at the indecencyof a media unable/unwilling to report the truth..a media who continue to pretend these two factions are in any way equal. If there is a God...he is asleep at the wheel.

I used to be very pro-Israel

I used to be very pro-Israel but no longer. This is murder, plain and simple. The USA must step in and stop this or else be part of this murder of innocent people.

If Mexico would drop

If Mexico would drop missiles on the US, how would we react?

Gaza, the largest open air

Gaza, the largest open air prison on the planet, with 1.5 million "inmates". In this conflict no one is right and everyone is wrong. There is no justification whatsoever for the insanity of war, terror and aggression. None!

Criticism is the easiest

Criticism is the easiest thing in the world. A suggestion as to what Israel should do would be a very welcome relief from the hysteria Mr. Solomon's article exhibits. Does any American, or European citizen actually think that they would put up with a government that allowed another country to lob missiles into its population centers with out a response? What nonsense.

Please try to be

Please try to be objective. I'm surprised that such articles can be written in truthout. You are all about the truth and this is what I like about it. If so how could you even say that the Israelis had only one dead person in a year and that they are using it against the inocent 1.5 Milion Palestinians? Something to think about: A. There were finally democratial elections in Palestine.( I wonder who come that you do not mentions that, how horrible is that concistador that gives you freedoms of speach and freedoms to choose your representatives) Well guess what they have chosen... Hamas! I understand the suffering that the Palestinians have though a lot of them chose to be Israeli Arabs and go to Hebrew university and getting great education but this is not the topic of this article right??? Let's go back to Ghandi. Would he support Hamas and what they are advocating for. What is them your suggetion for this solution?? If you have Hitler as a leader what would you do??? What does Nastalla really wants? I suffer for the Palestinians in gaza since maybe a lot of them were forced to elect Hamas. But I want to get from them anonimus letters telling us so I would like to see the Arab countries demonstrating against chamas and for peace. They are democratic countries that can say whatever they want without fear. I myself demonstrated in Israel many times for peace amd against wars. I want to see that the Palestinians and the Arab world honestly want to reach that. My family lives in Israel and I would like you to go there and live there before you write any about your opinion. Go and live there like you are in a cube ( great movie by the way). Live there not like a journalist that knows than in a few months you will be out of there. Live in either side of this ugly wall that was the most" creative" short term solution to protect civilians from violence, amd then come with a good way to end this????? You will find my solution cry strange but education and good health is the key. These kind of articles are not going to help anyone. Sincerely, Marcela

As the responses show, there

As the responses show, there are and have been voices that do and have protested Israeli humanitarian crimes and US collusion in its ongoing thuggery. This is mine explaining why Christmas requires us to protest on behalf of the Gazans. http://woodchipgazette.blogspot.com/2008/12/ins-and-outs-of-christmas.html The question remains, why officialdom in the United States remains so cowardly and supine in the shadow of Israeli war crimes? It is not enough to point the finger at a Zionist cabal that has subverted the press and penetrated key junctures in government --- although all that is true enough. Nor is it enough to point to a propaganda of victimhood that seek to blackmail criticism while immunizing barbarity. It is not enough to blame the "Jewish Lobby" for its successes. A people whose moral sense had not been dulled into oblivion could not be held hostage by such machinations. A people whose collective intelligence had not been dumbed down to the level of a cow would easily see through the distortions paraded as self-evident fact on the pages of our most august newspapers. So what happened America? Is this the bitter fruit of your exceptionalism, self-righteousness, and anti-intellectualism, or is it just plain ol' sloth and obesity slurping at the trough of tuffness? Maybe it is all of those things, maybe none. But I do know that America is at war with itself; it just doesn't know it yet.

The decree that created the

The decree that created the state of Israel in 1948 also provided for the creation of a Palestinian state. However, all of the rights the Palestinians might have been given were trashed by Israel and as of today Palestinians simply do not exist; it took them almost 60 years to "be allowed" to have an airport but then Israel bombed it. It is simple enough: its F-16s and Apache helicopters against stone throwers; and the "justification" that Hamas fires rockets at Israel is groundless; they simply do not have the cruel competence Israel has so many times displayed in so many bloodbaths, from other refugee camps, in dropping cluster bombs in Lebanon, and all the rest that is yet to come as the world sleeps over the New Year festivities... And let us not forget that Hamas was "created", encouraged to rise, by Israel, in her efforts to silence the Fatah; Hamas is an Israeli creation; and the media bows to these barbarous acts and behaviour; anyone who dares speak against Israel and the carnage will be branded "anti-semitic"; will one day a film be made about this and screened to everyone so that we can learn of these atrocities? How can a people who are so competent at reminding the world of the Holocaust and the many atrocities then committed - in dozens of films and hundreds of books - do so much worse to children, be it by bombing them out of existence, or simply maiming them beyond repair - as well as keeping them in their hideous prisons - yes, children - with no apparent reason and no right do defense? It is unfortunate but Israel has made it very clear: peace is not the goal, but the death of all Palestinians.

This is the first foreign

This is the first foreign test for Obama. Can he retreat from the reflexive pro-Israeli hawkishness he had to do during the campaign and tell the Israelis to back off this savage carnage in the biggest open air prison in the world, or else their subsidies are CUT... or are we again unwitting (dimwitted) accomplices to this violence. Went to some Mideast conference at Brown and chatted with some elderly Jewish professor after, "that wasn't so bad," he said relieved. When I said that the Israelis had so dehumanized the Pals that they were easy to kill, he started screaming, FILTHY, CRAZY", and ran out in traffic and was almost killed. There is no rational ability in America to deal with this subject among the AIPAC crowd, but Obama should simply demand that they stop or we will cut their subsidy in half, then use that to force a fair settlement. Land for Peace- no cantons, no checkpoints, no settlements ("our suicide bombers", said a top Pal negotiator to me). See my article about the 2006 Israeli destruction of Lebanon, a similar situation, which I then buried. Wonder why? http://hammernews.com/lebanon.htm

I just watched a video

I just watched a video interview with a stunned woman holding a toddler. Five of her daughters had been killed in Gaza. There is no justification, no rationale, for the killing of any child, much less five in one family. Imagine if it was yours. Somehow, MLK Jr. said at the Vietnam War, this Madness must stop. It is always the innocent, those trying to live their lives in peace, that pay the price for the actions of the violent minority, doing the bidding of domination, greed, pride, arrogance. No more bombing of Palestinian children. No more missiles lobbed at Israeli children. No more US bombs dropped on Iraqi, Afgani and Pakistani children. War is still not the answer.

'Eye for an eye makes the

'Eye for an eye makes the whole world blind' is a misunderstanding and MISUSE of 'eye for eye' concept--a standard of ONLY the correct measure of compensation for those suffering a loss, no more, no less. You would be expected to be compensated more significantly for the loss of an eye than you would for the loss of a small finger or lesser part of your body: that is all.

To the anonymous person who

To the anonymous person who posted "Thanks to Norman Soloman"... the argument that the "anti-Palestinian" crowd uses the antisemitism argument is problematic because then people can actually say things that ARE antisemitic and no one is allowed to call them on it without being accused of playing the antisemitism card. You sa, "Every thinking man/woman knows that the Israeli lobby in the US is extremely powerful. " This is an exact mirror of old arguments that the Jews control the world... just replace Israel with "jew" and there you have it. Purely on the issue of U.S. support of Israel, does it not make as much sense that the United States has and interest in having a powerful ally in the middle east? Doesn't that make more sense than saying "Israel is a powerful lobby"... a lobbyist only can be effective if he or she has something to lobby with. Most bargain with money; what do you believe the pro-Israel lobby is using? Their money and power? Doesn't this sound like old antisemitic rhetoric? I'm sure you do not mean it that way, but consider that maybe the US has its own reasons for supporting Israel.

F inally Truthout is telling

F inally Truthout is telling the truth with Norman Soloman's article. Code Pink too! Finally there are people with Jewish roots in this country willing to stand against the Israel military machine. Israel is an evil empire. Sure there are good people there but they are outnumbered. Most of Israel wants to look tough because they think that is the only way to 'be top dog'. The USA is the same. So we have to now stand against our country's appetite for blood as we condemn what Israel is doing. We can only get away with military might because we have the money....or do we????

Norman, What should Israel

Norman, What should Israel do to stop Hamas rocket attacks? Do you condone Hamas rocket attacks targeting Israeli civilians? I don't sense your outrage when Jews are the ones being killed. Don't they count? I know you are in search of justice. But, I think you're allowing rhetoric to obscure reality. Israel has focused its retaliation on military targets. Hamas purposefully targets civilians. Don't you agree that there is an important distinction to be made here? Avram

Finally, some balanced

Finally, some balanced discussion of this outrageous, bull-posturing by Israel and its US lobby. Israel is not an empire, however, but it is a middle east bulwark of the United States imperial ambitions in the world. Alas, this posture will soon turn to dust, as in dust to dust, ash to ashes. The first law of consumption: events are born of consumption, live by consumption, and die of consumption, meaning that Israel is now consumed by its own domestic policies that no fence or diplomacy will deter.

Any "solution" to the

Any "solution" to the Israel/Palestine issue must involve the parties TALKING to each other. Hamas's unwillingness to recognise Israel has been the excuse for Israel and its supporters to ignore it. But will outsiders apply the same standard if Likud should win the Israeli election? (Likud opposes a Palestinian state on the West Bank. -- see the excerpt from Wikipedia below). Moreover, any adult knows that we are not going to have a "final" solution to this problem. The best we can hope for is a series of negotiated settlements which may last for an indeterminate period (a generation per agreement, if we're lucky). And even reaching such an agreement needs transcending the tit-for-tat, eye-for-eye approach. The real issues for the rest of us are to sanction BOTH parties to deal with the main issues which are (a) to stop the terrorism on both sides, and (b) to identify ways for residents of both areas to enjoy a reasonable degree of life, liberty and pursuit of happiness (even if they can't agree on just what those terms mean to their constituencies). ((Excerpt from Wikipedia entitled "Likud charter ▪ The Likud charter continues to emphasize the right of settlement in "Judea (and) Samaria" (more commonly known as the "West Bank") and Gaza,"[2] and as such, brings it into direct conflict with Palestinian claims on the same territory, although the majority of Palestinians claim the entire territory of Israel as their own.[3] Similarly, their claims of the Jordan river as the permanent eastern border to Israel and Jerusalem as "the eternal, united capital of the State of Israel and only of Israel," do the same. ▪ The 'Peace & Security' chapter of the Likud Party platform “flatly rejects the establishment of a Palestinian Arab state west of the Jordan river.” The chapter continues: “The Palestinians can run their lives freely in the framework of self-rule, but not as an independent and sovereign state.”[2]"))

The Israeli defense forces

The Israeli defense forces have become like the EINSATZGRUPPEN--the SS death squads in eastern Europe during WW II.

Avram Friedman has the gall

Avram Friedman has the gall to say that the Palestinians target civilians and that the israelis don't; yet FACTS show that for every israeli civilian killed dozens of Palestinian civilians are killed in NON-precision high altitude bombings Meanwhile israel maintains a brutal blockade on humanitarian goods which condemns thousands of the 1.5 million Gazans to a slow genocidal death. I thought that one of the lessons of the holocaust was that collective punishment is a war crime and constitutes crimes against humanity. "Never again" is NOT the exclusive purview of jews, and NO, jewish blood is NOT more precious than that of others!

so who is the real culprit?

so who is the real culprit? religion is the monster in the room no one wants to talk about. religion has poisoned the world for thousands of years. i am talking about institutionalized religion, and not philosophies like original buddism and others. wars will not end until we get rid of religion, and evolve to a higher order of species, a la arthur c. clark's 2001 theory. of course we will probably never get there as man is basically irrational, and so the slaugher continues. the cave man is always there, wanting to bop the other guy over the head and steal his woman. we have a very thin veneer of "civilization" covering our atavistic tentencies. survival means everything. morality only comes with a full stomach.

A few years ago here in east

A few years ago here in east central Illinois a few Native Americans of the Miami tribe laid legal claim to a parcel of land on the grounds that there had been no legal treaty or sale of the land. You should have heard the howls of outrage at the thought of "those people" wanting their land back. Why it was almost 200 tears ago! The nerve! What if some one wanted your land back because is was theirs 2000 years ago? And the rest of the world insisted you hand it back? What would you do? Think about it.

Yes, the Native American

Yes, the Native American tribe should be allowed to return, with considerations and accommodation to all: sharing the one globe we all live on, as they did.

To "Yes, the Native

To "Yes, the Native American: poste (below), thank you for the perfect response to preceding note (frankly I couldn't decipher it before) But now I think it belongs in the Israeli infamous "facts-on-the-ground" camp and/or to the US "boots on the ground" militaristic philosophy. The underlying premise of both, of course, is "might makes right", certainly a no-mans-land beyond the rule of law and civilization-- nevermind humanitarianism. What was that we were bringing to the Middle East besides DU, F-16s, bunker busters, and "shock and awe"? Ah, yes, democracy. Right....

It is not about right or

It is not about right or wrong or religion. It is about one people deciding to take the land and livelihood and life of others who are not of their tribe/race/culture so can me dismissed as not worthy of humane or just treatment. Nothing real new going on and no real reason has been given the Israeli people to stop. Quite the contrary, they have been encouraged at every step of the way by American Jews out of some misguided sense of loyalty or shame at having turned so many away from US ports who were trying to escape Nazi Germany, and pseudo-christians in our government who want a military base and and an army that can wage war by proxy in the Middle East. I cannot believe that the Israeli government is not acting without the full support of the US government and that includes both Republican and Democratic Party members.

"If Mexico would drop

"If Mexico would drop missiles on the US, how would we react?" someone simplistically asks. If Mexico had missiles in 1848 when the US invaded and took away more than half the country, they undoubtedly would have used them to defend themselves. And if for the past 50 years we had seized the funds of the Mexican government, built walls through through towns and farmlands and prevented their people from going to work or even to a doctor or hospital, bulldozed down their orchards and their homes, stolen the water for their homes and fields, blockaded all their ports so no food, medicine, or cooking oil could be obtained, driven tanks through their homes killing their children, dropped bombs on their churches and sent rockets into their radio and TV stations and shot any journalist foolish enough to carry a camera, I doubt they would sit idly by and do nothing to resist our country's aggression.

Hamas (and its knee-jerk

Hamas (and its knee-jerk supporters) are like a bunch of spoiled little boys in the schoolyard who think they can go on provoking fights again and again, and not eventually get clobbered in retaliation. While the Gaza situation is appalling , somehow, the idea that it is ok therefore, for rockets to be launched with impunity against civilians in Israel smacks of irrational prejudice against the value of the lives of Israeli children, vs. the lives of Palestinian children. The sense of ENTITLEMENT of Hamas and its self-congratulatory, self-righteous slavish supporters is not only obnoxious, but in the end, also totally impractical. A solution must be found, but one that is acceptable to both sides in this conflict [brought on in the first place by the self-serving British colonialists, who imprinted their prejudiced marks on most of the conflicts of the current post-colonial world, e.g., the Indo-Pakistani conflict, so-called "Nigeria" (artificially made up out of three major and distinct tribal groups) etc. BOTH SIDES MUST BE ABLE AND WILLING TO TALK! If the politically manipulative and irresponsible leaders in Hamas are only willing to put their own people at risk for political gain, and continue to claim they will push Israel into the sea what kind of TALK can possibly occur? If Hamas were really to follow Gandhi, they would SIT in protest, not lob missiles onto Israeli population centers.
