Michelle Bachmann Channels McCarthy: Obama "Very Anti-American," Congressional Witch Hunt Needed

In a television appearance that outraged Democrats are already describing as Joseph McCarthy politics, Minnesota Rep. Michelle Bachmann claimed on Friday that Barack Obama and his wife Michelle held anti-American views and couldn't be trusted in the White House. She even called for the major newspapers of the country to investigate other members of Congress to "find out if they are pro-America or anti-America."

Appearing on MSNBC's Hardball, Bachmann went well off the reservation when it comes to leveling political charges against the Democratic nominee.

"If we look at the collection of friends that Barack Obama has had in his life," she said, "it calls into question what Barack Obama's true beliefs and values and thoughts are. His attitudes, values, and beliefs with Jeremiah Wright on his view of the United States...is negative; Bill Ayers, his negative view of the United States. We have seen one friend after another call into question his judgment -- but also, what it is that Barack Obama really believes?"

Goaded by a Chris Matthews to explain exactly what she was talking about (at one point Bachmann seemed to imply that liberalism was anti-Americanism), the congresswoman waded deeper into the mud.

"Remember it was Michele Obama who said she is only recently proud of her country and so these are very anti-American views," she said. "That's not the way that most Americans feel about our country. Most Americans are wild about America and they are very concerned to have a president who doesn't share those values."

Matthews later pressed her to name a single member of Congress other than Obama who she thought was anti-American. Bachmann, who initially wouldn't budge, called for a major "expose" into the matter.

Speaking of "pro America" .

Speaking of "pro America" . . . The Founding Fathers and Mothers would have forgone decorum . . . and cat-slapped Bachmann from one end of the Chesapeake to the other. Please, responsible voters of Minnesota, send this clueless anti-American packing.

AUNT.... a la Handmaid's

AUNT.... a la Handmaid's Tale, classic example.

Well what can you say?

Well what can you say? "It's the diversity of opinion without getting arrested, that makes this country great despite all the blood bones in the soil from 1619 until now." I don't live in her Minnesota district so I was not given the opportunity to NOT vote for Ms. Bachmann. She and Palin are cut from the same cloth. In a weird kind of way, I think we need to thank George Bush. He and Chaney are responsible for this move to the "left" which really is not "left". In fact I hope that left/right paradigm gets dumped post haste. Its meaningless now and NOT helpful. Hopefully those that vote will move to organize after the election across all of our various identities to create richer communities all across the United States. Those new communities relationships will also need to keep those they elected honest. The problems we have now need all of us to be actively invested in creating and moving forward the solutions that value justice, deep democracy and a vital planet. Nationalism needs to cease being a pathology of human behavior. If we care for our country more than the planet it rest upon, we are headed for more disaster. Community organizing is one of the keys to livable future.

Yet another shrill NeoCON

Yet another shrill NeoCON voice! Who cares what she has to say? I say, she should have her own show on FUX News!

More fear mongering and hate

More fear mongering and hate mongering. Remember when the Right wailed and moaned because of the Nazi comparisons? Hmmmmm... ~~ Lane Baldwin - alifewithspirit.blogspot.com

Hmmm.... paranoid much, Ms. Bachmann?

Instilling fear to get votes

Instilling fear to get votes seems like a repeating pattern.

Why is Michelle Obama's

Why is Michelle Obama's comment, something shared by many in this nation, so horrible? She never said she did not love her country, only that she was finally proud of it. You can love your country and still not be proud of her government's actions. Many in the Vietnam era would agree with that, as would many in the last 8 years. So,why is no one calling into question is no one calling the Senator from Arizona on his comments about only loving his country when he was a prisoner in another, or the Governor of Alaska for supporting secession from the Union? It seems to me that when a man who has been supported by the taxpayers of this nation his whole life states that for nearly half of that life he did not love his country, his motives for wanting to be President should be called into question. As for the Cow of Alaska - Lady, when your husband who obviously thinks for you in all things, calls for secession from our nation, you are definitely not fit to serve in the second highest land of this nation as only one of two people elected who will represent ALL AMERICANS! Bachmann is a disgrace and I fervently hope that the people of Minnesota send her back to whatever prison cell she belongs in as a criminal for inciting to violence the same elements that the McCain/Palin campaign seem to be inciting.

Actions speak louder than

Actions speak louder than words. I just sent fifty bucks to Bachmann's Democratic opponent in the 6th Minnesota Congressional District. I get a little touchy when a politician calls into question the patriotism of my political party or of me. I'll put up my forty one years of service to my country against this McCarthy clone any time.If she insults me or my party again her opponent, Elwyn Tinklenbertg, will get another fifty bucks. Regards, Carl W. Lundquist, JD, Colonel, Army of theUnitedstates (Retired)

she needs to heed the novel

she needs to heed the novel 'Term Limits' by Vince Flynn what is her street address again? Viva La Revolucion El Senale llegas

Excuse me, but isn't it Todd

Excuse me, but isn't it Todd Palin who hates America, enough to belong to a cessation movement in Alaska, to which his Gevernor/wife/ VP candidate is sympathetic? Let's get real here!!

There is something you can

There is something you can do even if you can't NOT vote for her, and that's to send a little money to her opponent, Elwyn Tinklenberg. Besides being NOT Bachman, he is a good, steady, intelligent man.

Channeling McCarthy is

Channeling McCarthy is accurate. I remember listing to Joseph Welch interrupt one of McCarthy's ravings during the Army-McCarthy Hearings with the question "'... Sen. McCarthy, have you no decency?'" Someone should pose that same question to her. Rep. Bachmann is un-American. The people in her district should be embarassed for electing her.

Even if you can't NOT vote

Even if you can't NOT vote for bachman, you can send money to her opponent, Elwyn Tinklenberg. He's a good man, smart, reasonable, experienced.

Totally agree with Bachmann

Totally agree with Bachmann - if you're not "proud" of and "wild about" torture, indefinite detention without charge or council, renditions, illegal invasions and occupations, the Bank Robber Reward Act of 08 + 2 trillion in addition "bailouts," environmental destruction, massive illegal spying and immunity for the corporate spy-team, Halliburton, Blackwater, Preferred Voting Systems, thousands of signing statements, the Unitary Exec, rising poverty rates, 50 million uninsured, record foreclosures, an $11 trillion debt, and worldwide disdain -- then y'all need to get the hell out of this God-blessed city on the hill greatest country in the history of the universe!!!

I am a life long Republican

I am a life long Republican and cast my first vote for President Eisenhower. I have just joined Colonel Carl W. Lundquist, below, in showing my outrage for what has happened to the party I once loved and supported. I have sent Ms Bachmann’s opponent $50.00 in hopes of ending her career as a member of Congress. My party has been taken over by every kind of nut bag from the religious right to those of McCarthyism type anti American principals. I am now a man without a party and like General Powell will now vote for this countries last great hope Senator Barack Obama. And I encourage every real American to look deep into there soul and find the reason that they love this country and do the same.

Critical inquiry is

Critical inquiry is American--liberty is ensured by asking questions. Guilty by association? Even David Letterman made the connection between John McCain and G. Gordon Liddy. Do Republican's really want a deeper inquiry into this?

After 70 years I have

After 70 years I have finally found a Minnesotan I didn't like. If being "patriotic" means liking Michelle Bachmann's views count me out! That kind of patriotism is self serving, hypocritical and completely negative. It has nothing to do with love of country or one's neighbor either here or worldwide. I wear a pin that states Dissent Is Patriotic sent to me by The Bill of Rights Defense Committee, a gift from a dear and wise friend. Let's face it, as a leader of nations, we have messed up economically. Now is the time to show the rest of the world that democracy does work if we elect a leader like Barack Obama. He may not have been to the manor borne, but he is something much rarer, a born gentleman.

Preemptive propaganda. It

Preemptive propaganda. It could also be called "first strike politics”. It is the tactic of malicious accusation in charging the opposition of what you could rightly be accused of yourself. The effect is a media inoculation from the same accusation. The Soviets did it and Bush senior did it when he called Dukakis a demagogue. That, of course, is a fine art among Rove style Republicans. Why shouldn’t McClone do it too? Need it be said that the Republican Party had crusaded against the Constitution? What crimes haven’t they committed? It is up the American people to hold them all accountable.

Minnesota's Rep. Michelle

Minnesota's Rep. Michelle Bachmann has probably just lost her job. She is toast! Thank you Chris for letting her talk! She is very much like Sarah Palin reading from the same script.

Louis.. thank you.

Louis.. thank you. Polarization isn't the answer. Working through our problems is. Without a firm commitment to THAT ideal, neither party deserves a vote. It can only happen if we work to build a consensus, never forgetting that it's not supposed to be the majority who always gets it's way, forgetting that those who don't agree, also have rights. It's a Republican form of Democracy. Why have we forgotten that?

oh yes ...bachmann is

oh yes ...bachmann is loathsome!.... I may well send her opponent some cash

Ending Democracy? Author

Ending Democracy? Author Naomi Wolf, set out on a national tour over the past year to discuss the evolution of America from a functional democracy into a closed, fear-driven society with a terrifying absence of due process. She lays out what she calls the 10 steps necessary to end a democracy and shows us just how close we are to completing them: 1. Invoke a terrifying internal and external enemy. 2. Create secret prisons where torture takes place. 3. Develop a thug caste or paramilitary force not answerable to citizens. 4. Set up an internal surveillance system. 5. Harass citizens' groups. 6. Engage in arbitrary detention and release. 7. Target key individuals. 8. Control the press. 9. Treat all political dissents as traitors. 10. Suspend the rule of law.

Hatred backfires big every

Hatred backfires big every time. This is only going to propel the Democratic opponent in Minnesota to a big victory. And well it should. Americans, whether Republican or Democratic or Independent, have no tolerance for cancerous hate, that divides us all. I will be watching to see her LOSE BIG!!! I may send her a suitcase so she can pack! Counting the Days until NOV4th and will breath easier on Jan 20th 2009.

To Carl W Linquist, retire

To Carl W Linquist, retire COL, proud Republican who sent $50 to the Democrat in Minnesota who is running against the neocon nut cake, Bachmann, I salute you sir! I salute you for seeing the evil and not accepting it, and for seeing that Obama is transcends race, color, because it is about fixing the nation, uniting the nation and making it strong again. I HOPE SHE LOSES BY A LANDSLIDE!

She is either off her meds,

She is either off her meds, or on meds, either way she is totally out of balance and should loose the race! The fact that her Minnesota opponent's finances went from a mere $146.000 to over $550,000 within 24 hours after Bachmann's hate-filled rantings were aired. If she is on FOX NEWS one more time, that would put her opponent over the top! Hate always backfires... always!

Complex issues, intricate

Complex issues, intricate problems, delicate situations and simplistic minds to deal with them, the likes of which bipolar Bachmann is an unfortunate example, white-black, good-bad, pure-impure, god-satan... BedJesus, our Neighbours to the south are in serious trouble !

Bachmann needs to study the

Bachmann needs to study the 1950 Senate speech of Sen. Margaret Chase Smith of Maine, when she decried McCarthyism.frightens In the speech, "Declaration of Conscience, she said: "Do note ride to political victory on the Four Horsemen of Calumny: Fear, Ignorance, Bigotry and Smear."

Ms. Bachman is just another

Ms. Bachman is just another neocon shrill. Voters in her district PLEASE take note, and act to relieve her and yourselves by electing someone with a brain.

I didn't know this horrible

I didn't know this horrible woman existed until I saw this video below: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/10/17/gop-rep-channels-mccarthy_n_135735.html Since it aired her opponent Elwyn Tinklenberg has amassed a great deal of donations. I can't afford it but I donated a little too. She reminds of Kathleen Harris, and Appalling Palin.

People like Bachmann have

People like Bachmann have had things exactly the way they wanted them for eight long years. It's only natural that they're getting a little desperate at the end of their halcyon days. All the scary talk, the chintzy flag pins and Iraq's Most Wanted playing cards, the panic they relished and thrived upon...it's in the past now, and they aren't dealing with it very well. Let me be clear: I don't think Obama will usher in the kind of huge, sweeping change the true believers say he will. He's a smart guy, he hedges his bets, he's not a radical; we won't be leaving Iraq the day after he's sworn in. But Obama obviously *does* represent a level of change that nutjobs like Michelle Bachmann are worried about, and that is heartening.

This woman is a real

This woman is a real loon.... if Republicans are wondering why they are in trouble, it would be helpful to start with Bachman's speech. People in this country are tired of being scared. Fear is the the primary fuel of the Republican Party. They need a new act...this one is the same old saw....BTW, I am in Independent.

Michelle Bachmann clearly

Michelle Bachmann clearly does not understand her constituency. While Minnesota has grown less staunchly liberal in recent years--mainly due to the libertarian leanings of new residents in the outer exurbs--one thing remains true: Minnesotans don't like shrill over-the-top neighbors or politicians drawing too much attention to themselves. This won't go over well. It will be interesting to see what happens to exurbanite politics in coming years. Getting slammed by falling real estate values and ruinous commuting costs, they might find their politics growing more in line with traditional Minnesota attitudes.

The media should investigate

The media should investigate members of Congress to find out how many are wackos like Bachmann.

I am Guilty...I must come

I am Guilty...I must come clean by admitting that for some time now I have not been a proud American. The first blow to that chest thrusting pride was the pictures from Abu Ghraib. Then while we were all watching the events of Katrina unfold at work, I took a call from a customer in Australia. I felt shame and embarrassment when he asked why nothing was being done to help the victims and stated it looked as if nobody even cared. Later that night I was telling a friend about that customers question and actually stated to him "I am not proud being an American anymore". I will take pride in myself tomorrow as I call Rep. Laura Richardson and ask her to Censure this maggot infested pile of hyena feces.

So, Democrats, are you

So, Democrats, are you finally ready to take the initiative and start actively defining "America"? All my adult life I've watched you sit back and let opportunistic wingnuts like Bachmann tell the media what nebulous terms such as "pro-America" and "anti-America" mean. Dammit, it's our country too. Why do the Grumpy Old Pricks ALWAYS have the monopoly on the "American" issue?

I just sent a donation to

I just sent a donation to Bachmann's opponent. It's a way for me to speak out against extremists of all stripes who have NO PLACE in legitimate politics. McCarthyism has been brewing in this country ever since Karl Rove and Rush Limbaugh became mouthpieces for neocon hyprocrisy and fearmongering. Rush can't help himself, but Rove is a bigger threat because he USES simpleminded thinking to power his fascist agenda.

Theough liberal I may be,

Theough liberal I may be, I'm going to try to be a little more charitable and understanding to Rep. Bachmann's position than some of my comrades. I suppose if you grow up in a traditionally dogmatic Christian home, get your law degree at Oral Roberts University, and advocate teaching Intelligent Design in school science curricula, you might have some difficulty appreciating the need for skepticism and analytical thought as opposed to blind devotion in relation to the affairs of your country. In fact, intelligent analysis and logical thought might easily be confused in your mind with being unpatriotic, anti-American, etc. However, in reality, the most patriotic and pro-American among us are those who think logically and analytically about what our country does and have an overriding desire to see it succeed and do the right things morally, ethically, and in the eyes of the world. Perhaps we should try to explain this to her. And if she still doesn't get it, well, boot her out of office. We can't afford to have this kind of stupidity exerting influence in our national affairs.

No investigation necessary.

No investigation necessary. Bachmann & Bush are totally anti-American. Cheney, too. Haliburton, Bechtel, Shell, Archer-Daniels-Midland, Monsanto, Blackwater, and not to mention the GOP. Anti-American, all of them. Don't forget those racists who show up at McCain rallies. Sarah Palin's husband Todd is clearly anti-American as he held a leadership post in an organization that sought to secede Alaska from the Union. Lets see....there's the Felonious Five Supreme Court Justices who aided and abetted the coup of Ought Zero. There's FEMA who was on hand to make sure 9/11 went off without a hitch but didn't bother to rescue New Orleans. Fox News is an obvious one. John Woo was the Admin Lawyer who wrote the memo where torture was legalized. Off with his head. Anyone left? How about Rumsfeld, whose wishful thinking led to unnecessary but utter shame and embarrassment for our military. I'm thinking the whole bunch of neo-cons are the definition of anti-American. I'm thinking all the xenophobes who think immigration is at the heart of their mess should go back to wherever they came from because their all invaders from the perspective of those who rightfully own the land we live in. Totally anti-American. Shoot, the whole anti-American thing once was symbolized by red, so how about the residents of red states are also branded anti-American as well. Maybe we should just scratch all this and remind Bachmann that she is actually the anti-American one here. She should go back to wherever her ancestors came from, where she can be proud of torture and abuse and black flag operations and genocide. That place sure as hell isn't America (we might be responsible for some of those things, but we're certainly not proud of it). Maybe her version of America is the old-school one, you know, where she still had the right to own a human being. Is that what she means? She wants to have the right to own slaves? Anti-American, my foot.

What's the big deal? All

What's the big deal? All Bachmann did was say public what EVERY Republican says in private. Until people realize that the threat to America has always been from the internal right, we will continue to get people like Bachmann in our govt.

I have been ashamed of my

I have been ashamed of my country since the year 2000, when Bush blatantly stole the election and began his sinister plight to destroy this country. And he did it with the blessing of most Americans. What is to be proud of? Since, he has waged a war on lies, protected his buddies like Ken Lay & Co., abused his powers, spied on innocent Americans, arrested protestors, controlled the media USSR style, and socialized screwups by Wallstreet. I ask again...what the hell is to be proud of? And I live overseas.

It's the ones who have been

It's the ones who have been destroying America for the last 7 1/2 years who are Anti-American. They have robbed the US treasury, started an unneccesary war and destroyed the US economy. They have lied at every turn and they increased socialism by bailing out Wall Street. They sold America down the river. It's the Republicans who are solidly Anti-American!

Well! I wish I could speak

Well! I wish I could speak to this NeoCON, and all the others, in person. I would be in their face with it. I AM NOT PROUD TO BE AN AMERICAN ANYMORE! I never protested the Vietnam War, not once, even though now I know I was WRONG, and that the Tonkin Gulf incident was FAKED UP by the CIA. Yes, Virginia, one more war based on BS and lies. I really bought into that anti-communist rhetoric, because I had a relative that had escaped from behind the Iron Curtain. So easy to see things in black-and-white. So easy to turn your brain off and not see how pro-American Ho Chi Mhin STARTED OFF being, before we stabbed him in the back to help France re-colonize Vietnam after WW2. -And gosh, doesn't history repeat itself? We helped Saddahm Hussein rise to power, helped arm and train his forces, and then turned on him, armed with a BS excuse. He thought we were his allies. Lots of people did. We have killed more civilians in the short time we've been there, than he did overall, and at least HE managed to maintain a secular government. He tried to maintain an infrastructure FOR THE BENEFIT OF HIS PEOPLE. Was he great at it? NO. Was he fair and just? NO. Was he brutal? Hell, yes. EXACTLY LIKE WE HAVE BEEN. The difference is that when HE was finished, his country wasn't in ruins, and splintered into a dozen factions. His people got food, electricity, and water on a semi-regular basis. -And he didn't have hospital wards filled with children missing arms, legs, and skin. Sure, he was a monster. WHAT DOES THAT MAKE US??? -And now that all the BS excuses have fallen away, why did we invade? For OIL THIEVERY, nothing more. Yeah, neoCONs, I AM ASHAMED OF MY COUNTRY, and WITH DAMNED GOOD REASON!!! We have a government full of OATH BREAKERS, that have butchered the Constitution they were supposed to be defending. We have a bloated military spending us into a deep, dark hole, run by idealogues and religious nut-job "Crusaders" who don't give any more of a damn about their grunts, than our civilian "leaders" do about the citizenry. I am so glad that my grandfathers didn't live to see this, the way third-generation Nazi sympathizers have reversed the grand victory of WW2, and pretty much destroyed the America they loved. So yeah, neoCONs, I guess I'm one of those "un-American" types that loved what it WAS, rather than what it has STOOPED TO, presently. So, if you're going to start investigating people, why don't you start with me? You probably know where I live. Only, you might not want to get within arm's length...

Investigating the "not

Investigating the "not patriotic" (as defined by those in power) - wasn't that part of the Patriot Act? The part that circumvented the FISA Act?

Someone needs to inform this

Someone needs to inform this maniac that this is the "UNITED" states of America and we are ALL Americans. The division her and her party are trying to spread make me question who is anti-American. These divisive tactics encouraged by the McPalin campaign are destroying this great country of which we are ALL a part of. Ms Bachman you are a disgrace and apparently know knowing about the people in OUR country.
