Justice Department Scandal Almost Buried by Financial Crisis

At any other time, what happened in the U.S. Justice Department last week would have been big news. At any other time, when internal reports by Justice Department call for more investigation into a case of unethical, if not criminal, conduct on the part of lawmakers and the White House, the administration would have a lot of explaining to do.

But the Bush administration got lucky. As its Treasury and Federal Reserve chiefs warned that the sky was falling and the economic crash and continuing tumult on Wall Street made them seem prophetic, the Justice Department released a nearly 400-page scalding indictment of the administration over the controversial firings of several U.S. attorneys in 2006.

It was an overlooked bombshell in breaking news cycles preoccupied with financial crisis, rescue plans, presidential politics, and a vice-presidential debate.

But what the Justice Department's exhaustive investigation and blistering report concluded about the enormous damage done to the department through improper politicization is far more troubling than even Sarah Palin in disjointed attack mode.

Investigators from both the department's Office of Inspector General and Office of Professional Responsibility found that political pressure did indeed drive the dismissal action against at least three of the nine federal prosecutors abruptly fired. At the time, then-Attorney General Alberto Gonzales insisted the individuals were all dismissed for inadequate performance, or failure to implement the President's law enforcement agenda.

But it appears the longtime pal and adviser to President Bush was lying through his teeth. Turns out the real reason some of the top federal lawyers were removed from the job, according to the Justice Department report, was that either the U.S. attorneys had the audacity to prosecute Republicans or because they failed to aggressively prosecute Democrats.

Either way, their behavior ticked off well-connected GOP politicians who had come to expect a politically loyal Justice Department. A couple of calls from powerful New Mexico Republican officeholders helped push former U.S. attorney David Iglesias out of a job. Evidently, the top New Mexico prosecutor was remiss in his duty to produce criminal charges against Democrats in the run-up to the 2006 election.

Another U.S. attorney in Missouri lost his post over a petty complaint from Republican Sen. Christopher Bond, and still another was bumped to make room for a protégé of White House political adviser Karl Rove. There was a pervading culture of partisanship/loyalty-above-all-else in the department, recalled one of the fired attorneys.

"Not only were my colleagues and I not insulated from politics - as we should have been in our jobs as prosecutors - but we were fired for the most partisan reasons," Mr. Iglesias said.

But it mattered not to the Machiavellian Bush Administration that justice was compromised with appalling political interference. It operates under the premise that the ends always justify the means.

    Look at the pattern.

The administration used fear about nonexistent WMDs as a means to justify the ends of invading Iraq. It outed a CIA operative to punish critics, eliminated civil rights under the misnamed Patriot Act to expand executive authority, crafted energy policy with energy companies to benefit the energy industry, and allowed the subprime mortgage mess to perpetuate to generate obscene wealth for a few.

And now there are official findings of fact about the politically charged dismissals of U.S. attorneys conducted to satisfy a White House agenda. Scandal-weary Americans may be inclined to dismiss yet another administration disgrace, but what happened at the Justice Department is too big a deal to ignore.

We're supposed to be a country that requires "equal justice under the law," not tainted justice under political consideration. But that's what we had under shameless administration zealots like Mr. Rove and Mr. Gonzalez.

The former administration officials allowed the most invaluable assets of the Justice Department - its integrity and independence - to be jeopardized for political ends. They permitted wholesale politicization of the department, as one commentary put it, "by subjecting new hires and sitting U.S. attorneys to rigid ideological litmus tests."

Even though new Attorney General Michael Mukasey has appointed a federal prosecutor to investigate whether criminal laws were violated all the way to the Oval Office, the administration may luck out again. As time runs out on its lamentable tenure, the injustice it perpetrated on a once-venerated institution may go unpunished.

But before the next administration takes over, Americans need firm assurance that the rule of law will be applied fairly by the Justice Department. Never again can there be partisan allegiance required of incoming professionals, or political criteria that outweigh the legal and ethical.

The impartial administration of justice in this nation, its very credibility, was nearly destroyed by the tyrannical ambitions of a few.

How's that for big news almost buried?

The way the Ted Stevens case

The way the Ted Stevens case has been bungled is another shining example of USDOJ at work. Were they ordered to throw the game or are they just incompetent?

I disagree with the premise

I disagree with the premise of this article - "At any other time, what happened in the U.S. Justice Department last week would have been big news" - unless of course you mean a time before November, 1999. The steady stream of news of wrongdoing by this administration over the last eight years, many times on topics far graver than this, have had no impact whatsoever on changing behaviour or bringing justice. They are not paying any price whatsoever, other than some theoretically significant "approval rating" which appears to have no practical impact on this administration's ability to act. There is no abatement, no contrition, no accountability - hell, no agreed set of facts. And these guys are not slinking away - they are FUNDRAISING.

Continue the pain, vote for

Continue the pain, vote for McCain

I've never had much

I've never had much affection for the Republican Party, but it is just recently that I've come to the conclusion that it can be called, accurately, a criminal organization.

the Toledo Blade is to be

the Toledo Blade is to be commended for bringing this out. Now, let's see who picks it up and makes it front page, national - as it should be.

What, "impartial

What, "impartial administration of justice in this nation"?

Right now Democrats would

Right now Democrats would win 58 seats in the Senate (according to www.electoralvote.com). If they can surpass 60, there WILL be justice. Bit by bit, issue by issue, they'll pursue bush & his puppetmasters to the coffin where they sleep by day. The only thing repugs would be able to do about it would be more of the same idle personal threats & spoiled child temper tantrums we're seeing from Fibber McCain's nazi rallies. Look out repugs! The sky IS falling! Actually, it's just that your skin is melting from seeing the light of day, as the clouds begin lifting.

This should indeed be front

This should indeed be front page. It is a huge embarrassment that a Hispanic who could have been a role model was after all only a willing pawn in this administration's cynical manipulation of ethnic and partisan constituents. Iglesias is worth 1000 Gonzalez's. What a horrible waste.

the Republican Party's

the Republican Party's problem is it's been taken over by corporations. That's why it appears to be a criminal organization. The Democratic Party, however, is now traveling on the same road.

The only thing I disagree

The only thing I disagree with in this column is that they may go unpunished because of their leaving office. The country cannot allow this to happen. They must be held accountable, even if it means putting them in prison. . . I think that would also be a good first step in regaining our credibility with other nations, to show that we can and will deal with our criminal politicians.

First Bush and the

First Bush and the yellowcake lies, Cheney and Plame, then Gonzales and the attorneys, then Palin and Troopergate. . . what further need have we of evidence that a vote for McPain would indeed mean four more years of criminal behavior masking as leadership.

The crimes or failures of

The crimes or failures of the DOJ were aided and abetted by the House Democrats. The Democrats control the House and could have done far more apply the rule of law to the Cheney/Bush Administration. If the House Democrats had held impeachment hearings the truth would have required impeachment of both Bush and Cheney. If the Democrats had impeached, the 4,171 US Soldiers would be alive 30,000 Soldiers would not be maimed, Bush and Cheney would be out, and we might have avoided the Bailout or the worst of the coming crash. If the House Democrats Fail To Call For Impeachment Hearings in the lame duck session of the House immediately after the election, we will know just how useless they are.

I think perhaps we need a

I think perhaps we need a circus. Let's take the entire Bush administration and all their crooked friends and dress them up in clown suits and old style horizontally striped suits and take them around the country on a train, or perhaps, since we have allowed the Republicans (supported by McCain on this one) to cut off funding our rail system, on busses (retired Greyhounds would be good). Let's make up a script for them composed entirely of their old lies and deceptions and see how they play now that they've been exposed. I think this might be fun and after the word is out we could charge admission and begin to pay back all the money they've stolen from the taxpayers. Just an idea....

I can't understand how Karl

I can't understand how Karl Rove , and Harriet Myers , among others , get subpenoed , by John Conyers , and decide to just blow it off , and aren't behind bars yet .

The attorney firing cases

The attorney firing cases are low on the scale of criminality when compared to their many other misdeeds. The media is no doubt complicit in their "success", why would this case be different, or not more crass? There is no one to hold them accountable, no sheriff in this town.

In terms of pursuit of

In terms of pursuit of Justice, even this will pale of Bush actually does an executive order on "pre-emtive immunity" or whatever it was called. I think I heard a blanket immunity for all troops and members of the administration. Of course, this might be able to be overturned, if we do get control. Then maybe the stationing of the 1st Brigade in Colorado (unconstitutional and reported in Military Times) will get a headline too... Martial Law.

Yet Nancy Pelosi stated

Yet Nancy Pelosi stated impeachment was off the table. Its funny how I've watched this criminal enterprise for 8 years and it always amazes me how they get off. But let some poor soul steal a candy bar out of a grocery store and they'll get at least 6 months in jail. Its a hypocrisy the way we run this system, The Haves always win. Please help me to understand that. I thought that their Christianity teaches them to care for the least of His...Yeah, Right!!!!! Fat Chance. Some how I hear that Bootstraps phrase again. What if you have no bootstraps?

Do you hear Alberto Gonzales

Do you hear Alberto Gonzales laughing, while driving his golf cart and drinking Martini's. What kind of moron's have this country become. As usual, you'd elect a Ham sandwich, if it promised you the sky. Just another day in "Dumbed Down" America. Somehow this is like a domestic relationship gone bad. Just tell me you love me, I really need to hear it. Yet he just smacks the crap out of you again, and you continue to stay.

Nothing will come of this

Nothing will come of this even if the Democrats win big. Instead of bringing to justice those guilty of abusing power and subverting the constitution, they will simply move on as it would reveal too much truth about the American political system. Better to sweep it all under the rug so that next time, the Republicans can return the favor.

One of the main allies and

One of the main allies and co-comspiritors in the Bush/Cheny criminal cabal is the mass media , exemplified by Fox News and others of course. If justice is ever to be served before the natural demise of these arch criminals then the inclusion of the manipulators of the media, the ones who 'call the shots', must also be held accountable for there complicity in the lies that have led to the death of well over 4000 Americans and hundreds of thousands of Iraqi's and Afghanistani's as well as the tens of thousands of wounded and disfigured soldiers and millions of displaced and ruined lives of the victims of this criminal war. This is just the most evident articles of the tragic and high crimes history of this current administration. Then there's the attack on the constitution, that they swore to uphold and protect, and of course the most villainous and pernicious psychological warfare conducted against the American people; this is the unread chapter in the book of crimes against humanity orchestrated by the Bush/Cheney cabal and delivered through the vehicle of the main media controlled by the neo con corporate criminal syndicate. Wake up people and educate yourself about the science of psychology and if you take an honest look you will be shocked to learn how subjected you all have been to the 'mind weapons' and the 'shock and awe' that they produce in their victoms. This fact of psychological warfare has been adequately treated in over two hundred books and publications. Carl Jung articulated this subject while he observed the behavior of the Nazi's during WWII. This aspect of the so called 'war on terror' goes a long way for those of us outside of the US to understand how all of this obvious corruption and crimes against humanity could continue to go on while the US population sits by and allows it. It shows a lot more understanding and compassion to say that the US citizens have succumbed to a mass psychosis of political insanity than to indict them as deplorable criminals responsible for the massacre of millions of humans and criminal assault on the environment. Of course this diagnosis cannot be applied to the perpetrators of these high crimes against humanity and God! No, they are guilty of deliberate, intentional criminal acts on a scale never seen in our recorded history. Should the insanity that has gripped the US population ever be healed before the full blown destruction that is potential and close at hand then we hopefully will see the restoration of justice and these criminals , including the media co-conspiritors , will be brought to account before the international community and punished according to the law of the land. May that day arrive in the very near future before it's too late!

We know that the U.S. Dept

We know that the U.S. Dept of 'JUST US' is exactly that, a gang of thugs, owned and operated by a corrupt, out of control, illegitimate cabal of mass murderers and imperial thieves, torturers, and hence, very smugly unlikely to investigate JACK SHIT! the nation is on the brink of a Martial Law declaration by these bastards. When that happens, sometime between now and the Nov. 4, 2008 election, this whole democracy experiment that's about 235 years old, becomes OVER WITH then. if you doubt the Martial Law declaration is nearly here, you need to read the following: FEMA sources confirm coming martial law Wayne Madsen WMR October 8, 2008 WMR has learned from knowledgeable Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) sources that the Bush administration is putting the final touches on a plan that would see martial law declared in the United States with various scenarios anticipated as triggers. The triggers include a continuing economic collapse with massive social unrest, bank closures resulting in violence against financial institutions, and another fraudulent presidential election that would result in rioting in major cities and campuses around the country. In addition, Army Corps of Engineer sources report that the assignment of the 3rd Infantry Division’s 1st Brigade Combat Team (BCT) to the Northern Command’s U.S. Army North is to augment FEMA and federal law enforcement in the imposition of traffic controls, crowd control, curfews, enhanced border and port security, and neighborhood patrols in the event a national emergency being declared. The BCT was assigned to duties in Iraq before being assigned to the Northern Command. On April 3, 2008, WMR reported on a highly-classified document regarding the martial law scenario: WMR has learned from knowledgeable sources within the US financial community that an alarming confidential and limited distribution document is circulating among senior members of Congress and their senior staff members that is warning of a bleak future for the United States if it does not quickly get its financial house in order. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is among those who have reportedly read the document. The document is being called the "C & R" document because it reportedly states that if the United States defaults on loans and debt underwriting from China, Japan, and Russia, all of which are propping up the United States government financially, and the United States unilaterally cancels the debts, America can expect a war that will have disastrous results for the United States and the world. "Conflict" is the "C word" in the document. The other scenario is that the federal government will be forced to drastically raise taxes in order to pay off debts to foreign countries to the point that the American people will react with a popular revolution against the government. "Revolution" is the document’s "R word. -- we are very very close to the end. There won't be any investigation. This democracy is very OVER WITH.

In the Name of the Volk:

In the Name of the Volk: Political Justice in Hitler's Germany. H.W. Koch The entire justice system was subordinated to the requirements of the Party and everything was done under the color of law just like this criminal administration has been doing since day one. No one who had read Mein Kampf could claim ignorance of Hitler's intentions just as no one who has read the executive orders and signing statements of this administration can claim ignorance of what these fascists have in mind for us.

war crimes, treason and

war crimes, treason and crimes against humanity are pretty serious too ... from what I remember of a functioning justice system

It appears that we are

It appears that we are already under a subdued form of Martial Law. Habeus corpus is gone even for American citizens. There are no checks and balances in the government and the Bush Crime Syndicate has been breaking the law for over 5 years now with no prosecution. The Scooter Libby case proves they have had no accountability. Congress is unable or unwilling to investigate and prosecute. What is being held over their heads? Very scary stuff. They have the power and the infrastructure to spy on every single one of us and the police are compiling lists of all left wing and radical peace groups and putting them in the terrorist data bank. See the writing on the wall? It's time to prepare that survival kit and learn how to live in the wilderness. It's later than you think.

"Never again". An

"Never again". An interesting article until "Never again". Hilarious. How often will we hear "Never again" only to have it happen "just one more time?" Our problem is that we have too much independence to organize against "them". The authoritarian always has willing mindless followers unable to think for themselves.

Will there be a Future to

Will there be a Future to look back at this living night mare only to wonder "What Really happened to the once "Great American Civilization"? Perhaps some survivors of The Nuclear Holocaust & the Revolution will find each other from opposite sides of the world, & study the remains of the near extinction of human kind, & impose their own beliefs as to how it started, & how it ended upon each other, Resulting in an Intolerance, & a Hatred for those that don't believe as They Do! In time, Many Lives, & Much Wealth, & Food from their tables will have been squandered. Those Non believers as You Must be Extinguished! So Your kind can Reign Total Control! Kind of a catchy concept, no?

Nightmarish, isn't it? Where

Nightmarish, isn't it? Where is democracy these days? I would watch the States in which these Federal Attorneys were replaced, especially the battleground states in this election. Election fraud is one of the GOP favorite tools, since they'll stop at NOTHING to fill government offices.

and the republicans are

and the republicans are still blaming the Dems (Bill Clinton) for the mess America is in. Repubs are the party of pathetic morons run by terrorists.

If Congress had any stones

If Congress had any stones it would have taken Dennis Kuccinich up on his brave and thoroughly prepared attempt to IMPEACH BUSH Yes it is a shame that this info didn't make a bigger splash. But, the Democrats are equally to blame for this... the litany of items cited as the "pattern" are abhorrent no doubt. But it took the compliance of the Democrats in Congress and the Senate to allow it to happen. The Democrats voted for the Patriot Act, the Democrats voted for the rules that allowed the mortgage meltdown. The Republicans have equal blame don't get me wrong. But these partisan "gotcha" articles accomplish NOTHING (fill in the sound byte of Jim Cramer here: "They know NOTHING!!") If Congress had any stones it would have taken Dennis Kuccinich up on his brave and thoroughly prepared attempt to IMPEACH BUSH.... so go see Nancy Pelosi about her lame cowardly behavior please. THAT is the news that is not getting any coverage. This is just a small piece in the puzzle. I think there's a typo: valuable, not invaluable, right? "The former administration officials allowed the most invaluable assets of the Justice Department - its integrity and independence.. "

When you finally see things

When you finally see things clearly... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9KzbJtG9V2E

What remains to be seen is

What remains to be seen is if Obama and Biden are in the White House whether the criminal actions of the Bush-Cheney-Rove administration will be investigated and the many private papers released for Congressional and public scrutiny. Even if the leadership of the Democratic Party lacks the integrity to even initiate impeachment proceedings, the dealings of the Bush White House with the oil and energy and defense and financial companies needs to be revealed to the American people now and not in 50 years time. We have witnessed the most corrupt and most destructive government in the history of this country and the judgment of these villains should not be left to posterity or be white washed as was done with former President Richard M. "I am not a crook" Nixon.

Integrity Still At Risk: we

Integrity Still At Risk: we really need to get to the bottom of some (if not all) of these issues in order to achieve closure. As with personal relationships, when we screw up we have to come clean - no more lies, no more secrets. Without closure on the U.S. Attorney firings and other Gov't screw ups, our Federal integrity is still at risk of being compromised for the long term. It's hard to govern and to be governed amidst selfish and deceptive relations.

Too bad we're only preaching

Too bad we're only preaching to the choir! The other side reads the same stuff with progressive names plugged in, and that's why there are still "undecided" voters. How can that be? It's like not being able to decide between apple pie and arsenic. Go to BarackObama.com and sign up for "Neighbor to Neighbor" calling. It's easy from your home phone and computer. They have the names of "undecided" voters that you can get on the phone and talk to. Be gentle. They're angry. Good luck to all of us.
