A New Attack on Birth Control

With just a few months left in office, President Bush is still doing the bidding of social conservatives who oppose women's reproductive freedoms. Under the guise of rules to protect antiabortion nurses and doctors from discrimination in hiring, a proposed new regulation would expand the definition of abortion to include any form of contraception that can work by stopping implantation of a fertilized egg in the uterus. This can include common birth-control pills, emergency contraception, and the intra-uterine device, or IUD. Doctors who refuse to perform abortions for reasons of personal conscience already are protected by law.

The potential impact of this new rule on the more than 500,000 hospitals, family planning clinics, and medical offices that receive any form of federal funding could be dramatic. The rule could also undercut many state laws - including one in Massachusetts requiring hospitals to provide emergency contraception for rape victims - and laws requiring prescription drug insurance plans to include contraceptives. Massachusetts passed such a law in 2002.

The draft proposed rule highlights the fact that many antiabortion groups also oppose one good method of preventing the unplanned pregnancies that lead to abortions - birth control. At some point in their lives, 98 percent of US women use birth control.

The proposed rule, while claiming to protect the rights of nurses and doctors, would interfere with patients' rights. A woman seeking treatment could be denied birth control and not even be aware that the service was available - only denied to her because of the unexpressed personal beliefs of the practitioner.

Last November, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists said gynecologists must provide "accurate and unbiased information" to patients and "have the duty to refer patients in a timely manner to other providers" if the doctors do not want to perform an abortion or prescribe birth control. The US secretary of health and human services, Michael Leavitt, said he thought this statement went too far in forcing doctors to choose between their beliefs and the prospect of professional sanctions.

The administration does not need approval of Congress to put this rule into effect. But about 100 members of the House, including all representatives from this state except Stephen Lynch of South Boston, have signed a letter protesting it. In the Senate, Patty Murray of Washington and Hillary Clinton of New York are leading the opposition. The administration should take heed and drop its ideological attack on contraception.

How remarkable that the

How remarkable that the government should EVER have the right to decide what an individual/family should do about reproduction. The joy of mothering 4 children was mine and I have a very responsible father for them. Is this the general picture in our nation? I think not....Doctors are welcome to deny health care to a patient on their beliefs (i.e. Catholic faith) but send the patient to another doctor for contraception. The people that can least afford children need help to get contraception, however they use it.

I vividly remember praying

I vividly remember praying to God to please take my life so that I wasn't forced to tell my parents that I was pregnant. The year was 1963 and I was 18 years old. By law, I wasn't able to make my own decisions until that 21st birthday, when I magically became an adult. I knew HOW I got pregnant, I just didn't know HOW NOT to get pregnant . Abstinence was not enough. I prayed and prayed but it didn't work for me, as it didn't for many others. I had the baby and she was given up for adoption. My 2nd pregnancy was much the same, but I was 20 years old. Still not the magic 21. Again a baby was given up for adoption. I married when I was 25. By then, I was allowed to use birth control. I never again got pregnant. My 1st husband and I divorced when I was 30. I stayed single and on birth control for the next 10 years. When I met my future husband, I was 40 years old, and we married at 42. I often wonder how different my life might have been if birth control had been an option when I was a 17 year old. Not an abortion, but birth control. Instead of the trauma and disgrace of an unwed pregnancy, I might have had a family of my own. How sad that social conservatives in our government want to take us back to those dark, dark days before the age of legal contraception.

Whatever happened to the

Whatever happened to the Conservative passion for "keeping the government out of the bedroom"?

A few vital lessons: 1.

A few vital lessons: 1. The cretins pushing the legislation described here are NOT "social conservatives" -- they are rabid right-wing extremists, mostly evangelical theocrats. And misogynists of the worst sort. 2. An MBA is not an MD -- Bush and Cheney et al. took the hypocritic oath, not the Hippocratic Oath. They (and their co-conspirators) are practicing medicine without medical licensure. Who are they and their cronies to "define" abortion? Furthermore, the Bushes and the Cheneys (e.g.) didn't limit their families to two kids apiece without contraception. 3. Beware -- this gang is not gunning only for repeal of Roe v. Wade (1973) -- they're gunning for reversal of Griswold v. Connecticut (1965) which FINALLY legalized birth control and established the principle of privacy, as embodied in the Fourth Amendment to the Constitution. They're ghouls as well as zealots, and must be defeated.

I've recently become aware

I've recently become aware of a book that promotes natural contraceptive methods "How to Avoid Unplanned Pregnancy Every Time You Have Sex WITHOUT Using Contraceptive Drugs" and that the author runs an awareness campaign on 2 pages on MySpace: pettcorby & virtualgigs .

It has been more than 40

It has been more than 40 years since feminists began pointing out that "right wing, evangelical theocrats" are only interested in dominating and enslaving women and care little for actual children. Their motto is: "Once they are here, let 'em starve." They can't really say this and have ANY credibility so they posture about "right to life" when taking care of children is the last thing on their minds. A hand full of men and psychotically avaricious women push these ideas because they have a hidden agenda- they know that when women are free, everyone is free. They have lost tremendous ground in the last few hundred years as people have given up on slavery and are preparing to give up on war. Without war and slavery, it is difficult to keep society unbalanced with just a few (and a very few at that) controlling the many. The preservation of privilege for a few families who are hostile to what is good for the Earth and the life upon her is the bottom line here. Those who are behind this effort do not care about the rights of doctors and nurses either, they are just willing to use anyone and anything to further their agenda. Anyone truly opposed to abortion has to embrace birth control. People who are so religious that they cannot dispense contraception should enter a different profession. It is sad that so many years after Roe vs. Wade we are still working to secure reproductive freedom in America.

I am a practicing Physician

I am a practicing Physician Assistant in Washington State and previously New York State and I am disheartened to know that clinicians would stand in judgement of patients and not simply be present to them as another human being.

A month ago on my radio

A month ago on my radio show, I interviewed Pett Corby who is an amazing person. She wrote a book that promotes natural contraceptive methods, and it is entitled, "How to Avoid Unplanned Pregnancy Every Time You Have Sex WITHOUT Using Contraceptive Drugs". This author runs an awareness campaign on www.myspace.com/pettcorby and www.myspace.com/virtualgigs Really interesting to check this out because alternatives do exist!

I think it's wonderful that

I think it's wonderful that such a book and information exists for those able to adhere to these guidelines. However helpful, the guidelines are not foolproof. They didn't work for my Mother who accidentally became pregnant while practicing such birth control. Although my Mother is probably happy to have my little brother, she often said that she wished she had used "the pill" instead of the "rhythm method".

It sickens me to think that

It sickens me to think that George Bush, has the power to take reproductive rights away from women. I will be so happy when he is no longer president, and the christian right wing conservatives no longer have a voice in this country.

I will leave the country if

I will leave the country if these stupid laws go through. Stem cell research laws ended my friends life.... Sex is a perfectly healthy mentally stabilizing activity.

Education and options...

Education and options... Wasn't our country founded on freedom?? Or has this become a myth of our American culture?? Women should be given ALL options available. Like the book that promotes natural contraceptive methods, "How to Avoid Unplanned Pregnancy Every Time You Have Sex WITHOUT Using Contraceptive Drugs." The author runs an awareness campaign on MySpace:pettcorby and virtualgigs. The other responses are real eye-openers here. What has(is) happening in America is scary and disturbing. Freedom to chose; has this become a collective illusion?? Please wake up!!

This is totally dishonest.

This is totally dishonest. We have a right to limit our family size. Doctors and nurses who want to limit our right to contraception should work in areas of medicine that do not come in conflict with their beliefs -- such as geriatric medicine.
