A New Rush to Spy

    There is apparently no limit to the Bush administration's desire to invade Americans' privacy in the name of national security. According to members of Congress, Attorney General Michael Mukasey is preparing to give the F.B.I. broad new authority to investigate Americans - without any clear basis for suspicion that they are committing a crime.

    Opening the door to sweeping investigations of this kind would be an invitation to the government to spy on people based on their race, religion or political activities. Before Mr. Mukasey goes any further, Congress should insist that the guidelines be fully vetted, and it should make certain that they do not pose a further threat to Americans' civil liberties.

    Mr. Mukasey has not revealed the new guidelines. But according to senators whose staff have been given limited briefings, the rules may also authorize the F.B.I. to use an array of problematic investigative techniques. Among these are pretext interviews, in which agents do not honestly represent themselves while questioning a subject's neighbors and work colleagues.

    Four Democratic Senators - Russ Feingold of Wisconsin, Sheldon Whitehouse of Rhode Island, Richard Durbin of Illinois and Edward Kennedy of Massachusetts - have written to Mr. Mukasey and urged him not to sign the guidelines until they are publicly announced and national security and civil liberties experts have had a chance to analyze them.

    We concur, and we would add that there should be full Congressional hearings so Americans can learn what new powers the government intends to take on.

    The F.B.I. has a long history of abusing its authority to spy on domestic groups, including civil rights and anti-war activists, and there is a real danger that the new rules would revive those dark days.

    Clearly, the Bush administration cannot be trusted to get the balance between law enforcement and civil liberties right. It has repeatedly engaged in improper and illegal domestic spying - notably in the National Security Agency's warrantless eavesdropping program.

    The F.B.I. and the White House no doubt want to push the changes through before a new president is elected. There is no reason to rush to adopt rules that have such important civil liberties implications.

These pieces of news are just the proverbial tip of the iceberg. What is really going on is not something we will understand, probably ever. We live in a national security state. Neither the domestic nor the international activities or implications of that national security state are visible to the U.S. populace. Yes, we get reports by courageous reporters. But clearly there are activities and plans of the U.S. government intended to either create a further intimidating environment to discourage such courageous reporters or to further hinder their activities. Question: Why so much faith in the Congress or in any future administration to either want to or to be able to address this secret government behind the public government?

Yes, another nail in the Constitutional coffin. Yes, the covert actions of Deep Government, the shadow government behind the public persona. The grip of the dictatorship grows tighter by the hour. Who would have thought we'd feel nostalgic for Dick Nixon and J. Edgar Hoover? I have no doubt the FBI is ALREADY illegally spying on so-called "dissidents" and "dissenters". This is just the official stamp of approval to authorize the illegal activities after the fact. Don't think anything we comment on in this site isn't "on their radar". It is.

We live in a fascist state controlled by a group of people that is actually behind the government. From the research I have done; the picture is quite ugly and not only affects Americans; but everyone else in the world as well. There is talk of Unions being formed similar to the EU only these will be at least 3 more: one for America, Mexico, and Canada; one for South America; and one for Asia. I really hope it does not come to this as we each need to enjoy the different peoples of the earth. Taking away more of our civil liberties is just another step towards a dictatorship. Keep your eyes open as I really would not be surprised to see something major happen before Bush and his crowd leave office. He already has the capability of declaring Martial Law. Do some research online yourselves and you will see.

There is every reason to rush these through - the Bush-Cheney Administration has no intention of leaving the White House. Why do you think they have embraced a senile old man to be President? They are terrified that America may actually wake up before the elections and elect a young black man and one of their strongest opponents to the White House. If that happens, I am frighteningly certain that they will never get the chance to take control of the government, and without these new guidelines for the FBI, the administration will not know who to round up to stop the dissent and open civil war that will follow their declaration of martial law. I do not know about the rest of you, but I would be planning how to under the radar if you love peace, free speech, and honor in a free and open democracy, because under this Administration you are the enemy!

FBI might abuse their "new" powers and revive darker days? Might??? Sometimes ya wonder what planet the NYT eds are living on. How about tens of thousands of National Security Letter "mistakes?" (60% violated basic rules, 22% clearly illegal.) How about the ACLU proof of routine FBI spying on, and infiltration of, peaceful orgs like Greenpeace and PETA? How about the FBI "leak" that took out Spitzer without a single charge filed or shred of proof offered?... Anthrax killer patheticness, anyone? Thank you David Brookbank, this seems to be close to reality and the truth. But most Americans don't have a clue or care. So they are going to get what they and their children deserve since all they do is pay lip service to democracy. If you are ignorant you are a slave. They seem to have a distorted view of what our liberties are if they think that they can do this by any means, shape, or form in a way that is NOT a violation of civil liberties. It's time to start watching each of our reps as closely as they watch us....any bill signed that is not in full accordance with our human rights and constitutional rights should be met with recall elections and impeachments. Enough is enough - I think we've come full circle to when the first patriots told the good king to just f*** off or they would forceably f*** him off. The King was, incidentally, also arrogant enough to think he didn't need to listen.

When (and if) this administration goes to bed in January and Mukasey and his co-conspirators start minting money on the talk shows, lecture circuits and book tours, is there any chance at all that a new administration will spy on them and make their day-to-day life hell? Nah, those minor inconveniences are always only for us little guys... ya know, We the People, and for those who fight for our rights.

To always bring Bush into the privacy argument is error. I believe that has done some harm concerning our privacy, but don't think for a second that a democrat president would not also abuse such powers. I personally believe that a democrat president and congressmen would abuse your privacy to a much greater extent. It is far better to remain politically independent when discussing this matter.
