Washington - John McCain's right-hand man hit a raw nerve on Monday when he said another terrorist attack on US soil would prove a "big advantage" to the Republican nominee's general election chances.

The comments by Charlie Black, who is arguably Mr McCain's most experienced adviser, put into words what many Republicans and Democrats have privately been stating for months.

Mr Black, 60, who is a veteran of every Republican presidential campaign since the 1980s and served in the Reagan and Bush Senior administrations, immediately apologised for his remarks, which were published in an interview with Fortune Magazine.

Mr McCain, whom opinion polls show is trailing Barack Obama, his Democratic rival, by between six and 15 points, said: "I cannot imagine why he would say it. I strenuously disagree ... It's not true. I have worked tirelessly since 9/11 to prevent another terrorist attack on America."

The Obama campaign said: "The fact that John McCain's top adviser says that a terrorist attack on American soil would be a 'big advantage' for their political campaign is a complete disgrace and is exactly the kind of politics that needs to change."

The controversy arrived at a bad moment for the McCain campaign, which has come under increasing fire from otherwise friendly Republicans for its alleged amateurism. Critics say it has sent out mixed signals about Mr McCain's political direction and shown a lack of "message discipline".

For example, last week the campaign put out a televised advertisement stressing Mr McCain's credentials on global warming on the same day that he gave a speech in Houston calling for a lifting of the moratorium on offshore drilling.

Republican consultants also worry the campaign has not invested in on-the-ground operations in swing states, such as Ohio, to nearly the degree as George W. Bush did in 2004 or as has the Obama campaign.

Although many commentators may agree with Mr Black, his remarks are likely to result in calls for Mr McCain to remove him. Democrats have accused Mr McCain of hypocrisy for portraying himself as a political reformer while relying on several prominent working and former lobbyists for advice and fundraising.

As one of those lobbyists Mr Black - who headed the lobbying firm BKSH until he resigned in March - has also been targeted by groups that allege hypocrisy in Mr McCain's critical stance on such firms. Some McCain staff, including Tom Loeffler, a senior fundraiser who previously lobbied for Saudi Arabia's government, have resigned from the campaign.

MoveOn.org, the liberal activist group, recently launched a television advertisement calling for Mr McCain to fire Mr Black because of his lobbying work for foreign dictators, including Joseph Savimibi of Angola and Ferdinand Marcos of the Philippines.

According to recent opinion polls Mr Obama has a clear lead over Mr McCain on almost every domestic issue. However, both Mr McCain and the Republican party in general continue to hold an edge on national security and terrorism. Electoral analysts believe a McCain victory in November would likely arise from an election dominated by national security concerns.

Why heck, just give the boys

Why heck, just give the boys who did 9/11 a call and they'll come up with some other "terrorist" operation. The fact that the aide phrases it so casually indicates the degree to which the American sheeple have become scared to death of "terrorist" and will vote like automatons for the candidate who seems "tougher" in prosecuting the phony "War on Terror." It would actually surprise me if the Neocons/Bushco DON'T come up with another false flag "attack" before November. It has worked soooooooo well for them.

I believe he speaks the

I believe he speaks the truth, even in a misunderstood manner. Could it be a McCain secret, or subconscious wish?

One way to counter the fear

One way to counter the fear trigger that would be pulled if there were another attack is to remind people that we've lived under a repressive regime bent fighting the "war on terror" for six years, and yet they couldn't stop the attack. "OK, you've had their "security" for six years and look what happened." I'll also comment that being so acerbic ("sheeple") only serves to create further divides in our society. It's time to stop with the kindergarten antics and name-calling, and work towards bringing people together...and that includes those who may not completely agree with every idea. In order to affect serious change, we need to build consensus, not create greater divides.

So McCain is hoping for a

So McCain is hoping for a terrorist attack?

Its these cavalier comments

Its these cavalier comments that occasionally pop out that should warn us (if there was any doubt) that the games that these people are playing are very real, very calculated, and very dangerous to Americans and whats left of American democracy.

An attack by people fighting

An attack by people fighting american imperialism might give a boost to right wing nuts like McCain because having McCain in the Whitehouse would strengthen those opposing american violence and occupations. Bin Laden wanted Bush to win as he made a much better rallying cry and enemy to attack. McCain would be the same.

Even if by some

Even if by some infinitismally remote chance that the neocon/straussians were not somehow complicit in the Twin Towers attack, having seen how "well" it worked for their agenda, can their be any doubt that these personifications of evil would nott engage in false flag operation of some sort or a secret provocative action against Iran to which Iran's response would be characterized as an unwarranted attack on the "peace loving" peoples of America and Israel. Excuse me while go slug down the first gallon of Pepto-Bismol of the day to deal with just how sickening this Administration and the nation's dim, dense and deluded semi comatose and criminally stupid, breathing with mouths agape and knuckles dragging trudge down the road to infamy.

This is like Hilary's

This is like Hilary's assassination remark that doomed her campaign. There are many republicans that I would not put it past to 'engineer' a new 'terrorist' attack if they thought it would keep them in power. Their private armies probably have nukes pilfered from the air force too.

Newt Gingrich already said

Newt Gingrich already said just to wait for October. Another terror attack is exactly what they are planing. Even in the Republican Party are people with morals. That's why Mr. Black is calling it out. I hope the American People will not fall for it!

I'm not sure these were

I'm not sure these were "cavalier remarks", but like the commentator who references the HRC remarks about RFK's assassination in June as an excuse for staying in the race, Black could be "setting up" the media cover for another terrorist attack, arranged, no doubt, by McCain's best new friend, G.W. Bush & Co. Wouldn't be surprised if something like that was behind their recent political spit-swapping deal. "Hey George, if you'll arrange ... wink, wink ... a terrorist attack to get me elected, then I'll ... wink, wink ... pardon you and our pals for murder and other war crimes and crimes against humanity, so you won't have to worry about Bugliosi!" No, such an "arrangement" wouldn't surprise me in the least. And when it happens, IF it happens, they can all point to Black and shake their fingers! "Shame on you for suggesting this and inspiring a lone terrorist to attack us" just in time to help his ... worst "enemy" get elected ... wink, wink ...

This is like the rise of

This is like the rise of Hitler. Neo-con or Neo-nazi, I can not tell the difference. In any case attack the US and then well what next? Another pretext to take out another regime that disagrees with APAIC. Oh Rumsfeld and Wolfie, where have you gone? The fun you can still have for the next event. What will it be? NYC, Boston,LA? Take your pick. Or ask the clandestine people behind the rogue elements in McCains organization. They must know, otherwise they would not have bothered to bring up the insinuation in the first place. Talk about terrorism, Americans have been terrorized for the last 8 years just living under Bush and his pals. How could McCain even come close to improving my fear towards my own government. Just another pretext to bomb IRAN.

Let's not forget, Bin Laden

Let's not forget, Bin Laden wants world war. McCain would be his choice for president because then he'll get to have it. Black's comment called out Bin Laden, and it's very scary to think (know?) that he'll very likely answer. Get ready for a bumpy ride.

Some people think that the

Some people think that the neocons are willing to turn control over to a Democratic president and then blame him for their economic mess. However, with two or three Supreme Court nominations in the balance during the next four years, I believe these fascists have no intention of relinquishing their illegal seizure of power in November. They want to continue strengthening their one-party dictatorship in this country. If it looks to them like their fear and smear tactics will not make the election close enough to steal once again, staging another "terrorist attack" here is certainly a viable option for such evil individuals. Even if Obama wins in November, the neocons could stage something between then and January 20, 2009, declare martial law and nullify the election results. Progressives' best hope might be to emigrate from the U.S. before Blackwater and company seal off the borders, not so much to keep people from getting in, but to keep people already here from getting out. If it should ever come down to this, God help us all. Oh, but that could never happen in America---right?....

hmmm ... "another terrorist

hmmm ... "another terrorist attack on US soil would prove a "big advantage" to the Republican nominee's general election chances" extending the logic a little ... ... if there is no terrorist attack then this is proof that terrorists support the Dems.

Seems to me that most of the

Seems to me that most of the comments miss the crucial point made in the 2nd paragraph of the article, namely that Black "put into [public] words what many Republicans and Democrats have privately been stating for months." The elite, the insiders, the movers and the shakers apparently pretty much all agree that another attack would help McCain's otherwise pathetic campaign. And why not? The only thing he has going for him is "national security", that is, the same old tattered fear card the Busheviks have been playing for years. BUT what those in the know believe and say among themselves must not be allowed out of the charmed circle. If the hoi polloi were to catch wind of what the insiders say, the powers that be would have fewer levers with which to manipulate the voters. Heaven forfend that the lower orders be in a position to make informed, intelligent political decisions. How then would the consultants, the pollsters, the lobbyists, the spin doctors, the PR flaks, the ad agencies, indeed, the politicians themselves be able to continue to live in the style to which they have become accustomed? It seems absurd that the US spends far, far more on political campaigns than any other country in the world and yet the whole process comes down to the question of which sugar saturated nutrition free processed food we can be conned into buying. But for the suspicion that such an arrangement suits the political and economic oligarchy just fine, thank you.

This is getting really

This is getting really absurd. How did the Republicans become "the security party" when 9/11 happened on their watch? How could another attack, while a Republican sits in the White House. help another to gain the White House as the "tough on security candidate"? This is totally contrary to any rational explanation. Apparently the media and Americans take it to be valid: Allowing another terrorist attack validates the the Republicans further as the security party. America sucks, I can tell you that. And Americans are a stupid and gullible people. Period!

This is typical of the

This is typical of the current batch of hypocrites now running our country. They want you to elect them in order for them to "protect" you from a potential terrorist attack - all while secretly hoping (and praying) that one will actually occur! Sick and twisted is the only way to describe this bunch.

It appears that Bush has

It appears that Bush has been giving away all of his trade secrets. It is evident that this 'possible' terrorist attack has been bandied about quite freely amongst the upper echelon in this Administration. Sure makes me feel 'safe' that we have such people in charge of this War of Terror. Remember, it was under this same Administration that the First so-called terrorist attack was planned and executed. So be afraid--very afraid...and be sure you vote for another warmonger that is just itching to Bomb, bomb, bomb, bomb Iran ! Just what we need to keep us all on our toes with bated breath waiting for the Next attack by that most assuredly, long-deceased scapegoat Bin Laden. It would be funny if it weren't so damn terrifying.

I agree with almost all of

I agree with almost all of these comments. I am so tired of the Bushites and McCainites it is pathetic. As I have always said, the Republicans get control of government and mess everything up and really they act more like DICTATORS and what they define Communism to be. It`s not a single one of them is interested in what is good for the American people only their own selfish agendas. They scare people to death with all their terrorist talk and I firmly believe that they knew about the 9/11 incident before it ever happened. Hopefully the American people will put a Democratic president in office and keep them in control for alot of years. But as always happens when they start getting everything working right again the idiot people decide they have to vote a Republican into office so they can mess everything up again for another 8 years and someone else has to come along and clean up their mess again. I really do feel that McCain will not win at least I certainly hope he doesn`t cause he just like Bush. They have no intention of getting out of Iraq and now they are trying to figure out an agenda to attack Iran for no reason whatsoever. So yes they probably are hoping for another attack on US soil so they can come up with another bright plan that doesn`t work ! ! ! ! ! !
