Angry Amateurs

The story of the day out here in Minneapolis is the McCain campaign's war against the press. This has been building for some time. Those of us who have criticized the candidate - and especially those of us who enjoyed good relations with McCain in the past - have been subject to off-the-record browbeating and attempted bullying all year. But things have gotten much worse in recent days: there was McCain's rude, bizarre interview with Time Magazine last week. Yesterday, McCain refused to an interview with Larry King, for God's sake, because Campbell Brown had been caught in the commission of journalism on CNN the night before, asking McCain spokesman Tucker Bounds what decisions Sarah Palin had made as commander-in-chief of the Alaska national guard. (There was an answer that the unprepared Bounds didn't have: she had deployed them to fight fires.)

So what's going on here? Two things. McCain is just plain angry at us. By the evidence presented in the utterly revealing Time interview, he's ballistic. This is a politician who needs to see himself as the man on the white horse, boldly traversing a muddy field...any intimations that he's gotten muddied in the process, or has decided to throw mud, are intolerable.

The second thing is more insidious: Steve Schmidt has decided, for tactical reasons, to slime the press. He wants the public to believe that there is an unfair - sexist (you gotta love it) - personal assault going on against Palin and her family. This is a smokescreen, intended to divert attention from the very real and responsible vetting that is taking place in the media - about the substance of Palin's record as mayor and governor. Sure, there are a few outliers - and the tabloid press - who have fixed on baby stories. That was inevitable.... the flip side of the personal stories that the McCain team thought would work to their advantage - Palin's moose-hunting and wolf-shooting, and her admirable decision to have a Down Syndrome baby. And yes, when we all fix on the same story, whether it's a hurricane or a little-known politician, a zoo ensues. But the media coverage of the Palin story has been well within the bounds of responsibility. Schmidt is trying to make it seem otherwise, a desperate tactic.

There is a tendency in the media to kick ourselves, cringe and withdraw, when we are criticized. But I hope my colleagues stand strong in this case: it is important for the public to know that Palin raised taxes as governor, supported the Bridge to Nowhere before she opposed it, pursued pork-barrel projects as mayor, tried to ban books at the local library and thinks the war in Iraq is "a task from God." The attempts by the McCain campaign to bully us into not reporting such things are not only stupidly aggressive, but unprofessional in the extreme.

McCain had what it takes to

McCain had what it takes to survive 7 years in prison in Vietnam: tenacity, firm religious beliefs, and single-mindedness. However, we need a president who is not John McCain. What we need is a President with the ability to recognize and withdraw from a no-win war, rather than hanging on "for the next 100 years"; respect for the Constitutional right of separation of church and state rather than pushing his own religious beliefs; and open-mindedness to new ideas rather than single-minded endorsement, 90% of the time, of Bush's misadventures.

Joe Klein is one of a

Joe Klein is one of a shrinking breed of reporters -- an actual journalist, and it's heartening to hear him rally his peers. Howard Fineman had some spine today on this topic, too. Actually, I'm surprised the McCain campaign didn't go to the press and say, "Hey, Sarah was a journalism major, ya gotta love her, right? Is there anything she can't do?" Why didn't they do that? Because they know these guys are smarter than that. They don't feel the same way about the American public.

Why isn't the press

Why isn't the press reporting that Sarah Palin does not even believe that global warming is worsened significantly by human activities?

As a former Alaskan, I am

As a former Alaskan, I am not wholly convinced the pregnancy stories are of no value. Is it true she endangered her life and her baby's by flying from Texas, where medical care is adequate, to a rural area of Alaska, where it is less so? Why would somebody do that? It matters. It shows (poor) judgement. But having said that, making the Permanent Fund check the biggest it has ever been (rather than setting money aside for the inevitable rainy day) - that is an even more important demonstration of her (in)ability to govern.

Great analysis as always by

Great analysis as always by Joe Klein. Just two things, though, Joe. The GOP convention is in Saint Paul; and neither of the Twin Cities is "out here,"

This WAR was Started By

This WAR was Started By Them! Sold to Us By Them, CONtrolled By Them, Treason was Committed By Them to Keep It Going! We Don't See or Know what Really goes on over there, So Many Squandered Lives, So Many un tracked Billions, Lost Weapons. They can Keep it Going Long Enough to CONtinue to Hide All Felonies & Records. They Can & Will also Say When to Pull Out or When the War Is Won to suit Their agenda or election results. Mission Accomplished worked Just Fine for Their Purpose, keeping it Hot after a Dem. gets in will be fodder to say "See! They Ruined Every Thing!"

Just like bush & cheney, the

Just like bush & cheney, the media will not be Allowed access to Mc & Sarrah! Only Fox & Rove & Lush Limberger will "Tell us All We Need To Know". "It's Hard" to Ruin a country when it can See the Horror Coming! Had We Known what Crimes & Corruption were going to Rob Us All do you think they'd have been able to Pull It Off? It'll be Much Easier once they get that Next Republican Supreme Court jester to Kill Every Thing & Every One noncomplyant!

I also think the Palin "baby

I also think the Palin "baby story" is important - incredibly important. It's obvious that because she "doesn't believe in abortion" SHE WAS TRYING TO CAUSE A MISCARIAGE. What a love for her gift from God it must have taken to take a job delivering a speech in Dallas Texas when she knew her baby's birth was imminent and it's dangerous to fly. She just went ahead and took the 8-hour flight (both ways). When she noticed she was leaking fluid what did she do? Go to a doctor (like any responisble person or loving mother)? HELL NO! She went ahead to the speech! What did she do when the speech was over? See a doctor (like any responisble person or loving mother)? HELL NO! She got back on the plane to Alaska! What did she do when she landed in Alaska? See a doctor (like any responisble person or loving mother)? HELL NO! She drove out of her way to the middle of nowhere to finally have a doctor check her out and hopefully deliver a then stillborn baby. Instead, the baby who was delivered was a one with Downe's Syndrome. I'm sure leaking fluids for the last day and a half without seeking medical attentions didn't help matters. Was Chelsea Clinton a newborn when Hillary Clinton ran for president? HELL NO! LIKE ANY RESPONSIBLE PERSON OR LOVING MOTHER HILLARY CLINTON WAITED TO START HER RUN FOR PRESIDENT UNTIL SHE WAS NO LONGER BREASTFEEDING. Newborns have to be changed and fed about every 2 hours (around the clock). For the first 3 months, this takes MOST of your time. What is Palin's husband doing during all of this? I hope he's picking up the slack. This is the first time I've heard of the concept that a child with "special" needs, requires LESS ATTENTION, and needs to have their lives needlessly put at risk. Oh well. She's supposed to have traditional values. This is the way people got rid of unwanted children (a few hundred years ago). Apparently, abortion is only immoral WHEN IT INVOLVES A DOCTOR, AND IS DONE BEFORE THE BABY IS BORN! I'm not the only one I know who'd like a few questions answered about this.

There are a lot of

There are a lot of similarities between Sarah Palin and Dick Cheney, hunting being the least of them. She has that "bring em on" fervor and is further to the right than McCain. Did you know that Bush questioned Cheney once on the tax cuts? Cheney replied: "It's the principle, son." Sarah Palin's principles could come out of Karl Rove's playbook. She looks like another Dick Cheney to me and if the evangelicals and the neo cons have their way, they will be pulling John McCains strings just like Cheney pulled Bushes.

McCain's sudden bouts of

McCain's sudden bouts of anger, misspoken words, and attention lapses are signs of early dementia. I'm almost certain that is what the campaign is attempting to hide. Unfortunately, with just 60 days to go until the election, they may get away with it.
