Legendary journalist Bill Moyers address the National Conference for Media Reform in Minneapolis, June 7, 2008. Presented by FreePress.net.

"As journalism goes, so goes democracy," renowned PBS host Bill Moyers told the crowd at the National Conference for Media Reform. And right now, journalism is in trouble.
In his serious and eloquent style, Moyers warned the crowd of the "mighty armada of power and influence" that threatens the media and democracy today-propagating junk news that dominates the national discussion and forces out more legitimate and competing storylines.

There is one central tenet that runs through the media reform movement, according to Moyers: Everyone here sees media consolidation as a "corrosive force." As the wall between journalism and advertising is broken down by businesses pushing profit over public good, honest information and accountability in this country literally disappears. He called out the "myths of the marketplace," including the idea that private systems will provide for the public good, and the business mantra that public interest is what the public is interested in.

Moyers effortlessly drew connections from the complicity of the media in the war in Iraq to the near-constant attacks on the environment, from the "political marionettes" in Washington, D.C., to the soaring credit card debt and inequality in America today. The way to combat these problems is with media reform, and the only way reform the media is with a healthy and popular movement.

"In numbers is strength, and in strength is success," Moyers told the crowd of journalists and activists, urging them to support a diversity of voices from all communities. He called on journalists and activists to "be vigilant" and "show courage," because their job is literally to protect "the freedom that makes all other freedom possible."

Genuine vision requires

Genuine vision requires integrity. Integrity is the product of character. Character comes naturally to he who thinks, speaks and acts in respect of great principles. He who is without character suffers delusion. In the absence of integrity, our vision is clouded by dissonance, our course established in ignorance, and we miss the mark. He who truly sees reality sees without ignorance and is a seer. Woe unto the people who lend a deaf ear unto the seer and choose a course of ignorance! Bill Moyers is a man of great integrity. America: United we stand, divided we fall. Rectify America.

I feel vindicated. For so

I feel vindicated. For so many years I’ve been saying the very things Mr. Moyers has said. Also, what Dan Rathers and others have brought before this all-important conference. The times they are a-changin’ Bob Dylan sang, and it seems we are now at the threshold of the much needed liberation of the Press. When I first used to say these things, I was labeled as subversive, fired from the job and kept from any other jobs in mainstream journalism. There is nothing I more ardently wish than to see the rise of a popular movement on behalf of free, intelligent, relevant, responsible, and courageous journalism. Mendacity and triviality can only engender mutants, not free and empowered citizens. We certainly can not assimilate any more of the toxic waste that has been masked as “objective reporting”. I thank the organization that put together this conference, the city that hosted it, and the reporters and media that have allowed us to be informed about it. Moyers speech was very fine.

Moyers speech was very fine. Thanks for giving me the chance to hear and watch the whole thing on this site. He is such good man.

Bill Moyer's speech at the

Bill Moyer's speech at the Free Press gathering is the finest of thoughts at this critical time of do or die. From his words I take the action of "do" as that is what democracy stands for. I thought as I listened there is hope because if there were not we would not be listening to his words via the internet. What a magnificent showcase for demonstrating the internet's power and potential. Thank you TRUTHOUT for getting this TRUTH OUT! Let these words herald a new path for the fourth estate to truly be the voice of truth, justice, straight shooting reporting and story telling to help us know and understand what we, the people, need to keep our democracy alive.

Bill Moyers is a TRUE

Bill Moyers is a TRUE patriot and one of the VERY few standing up for REAL American values. I recommend that EVERYONE watch the video of his speech to the Conference For Media Reform. It's over a half hour but to say it is WELL worth it is an understatement! Bill, you are my hero!!!

I once long ago had a radio

I once long ago had a radio coourse in college that said,"People will listen to programs of the lowest common denominator until folk write in or call and demand better." Bill Moyers has been bringing this to our attention for a long time. What a ray of hope he is. Can't wait to hear him on Friday nights... Thank you Bill Moyers.

Somebody should tell Moyers

Somebody should tell Moyers that the American people are just too stupid to govern themselves. This isn't about the media. It's about people falling for appeals to their selfishness, greed and other dark impulses. Its about blaming others and not themselves. In a democracy of intelligent educated informed voters the GOP would get about 10% of the vote in every election. The people fall for every scam and snake-oil promotion that comes down the pike.

Thank you Bill Moyers! What

Thank you Bill Moyers! What an honor and a joy for you to recite the lyrics to my husband's song, "Patriots Dream." He wrote the song in 1976 and I've always thought that song was very important. I loved the line "....perhaps too much is being asked of too few, you and your children with nothing to do." What a great speech! Perhaps people like you and my husband, Arlo Guthrie will inspire us all to rekindle a patriots dream. I posted an old concert I shot in Sebastian, Fl of Arlo doing this song. The sound quality is not that great. Now, I'm inspired to do another one from his latest release of "In Times Like These." Done with the Kentucky Orchestra and mixed by the famous George Massenburg. It's a beautiful piece. Thank you Bill for all you do! Love from the entire Guthrie Family!

Thank you so much for

Thank you so much for disseminating this incredible speech by Bill Moyers. I never miss his Friday show; if I am not at home, I tape it. What I miss, and need, is a transcript of his speech to reread when I need a shot of hope. Are there plans to publish a transcript, like you do for many of the videos you show? Thanks, Peggy E.

This is simply the greatest

This is simply the greatest speech I have heard in a long time. In dispiriting times like these Moyer's words are like a candle in the dark for me. We can only do this together. Henrik Petaisto Plymouth, MN

Bill Moyers has about him

Bill Moyers has about him the grace and spirit of the specially blessed. It is clear that he cares deeply about America's important themes and that this well-placed concern, in its turn, renews him, energizes him, and helps us all on our way. I make it my business to be home every Friday night in order to watch Bill, an experience equivalent to that of my Dad's generation, who listened to the Fireside talks. He delineates, he clarifies, and he champions. Bill Moyers, to my way of thinking, is the Roger Williams of our age.

What a fine speach. It

What a fine speach. It echoes across the Atlantic and has been apprecited here in Denmark - so there is still hope for America. Could you make a transcript available as suggested by Peggy E
