Candidate McCain's Big Decision

More often than not, the role of a vice president is a minor one, unless some tragedy occurs. But a presidential nominee's choice of a running mate is vitally important. It is his first executive decision and offers an important insight into how that nominee would lead the nation.

If John McCain wants voters to conclude, as he argues, that he has more independence and experience and better judgment than Barack Obama, he made a bad start by choosing Gov. Sarah Palin of Alaska.

Mr. McCain's supporters are valiantly trying to argue that the selection was a bold stroke that shows their candidate is a risk-taking maverick who - we can believe - will change Washington. (Mr. Obama's call for change - now "the change we need" - has become all the rage in St. Paul.)

To us, it says the opposite. Mr. McCain's snap choice of Ms. Palin reflects his impulsive streak: a wild play that he made after conservative activists warned him that he would face an all-out revolt in the party if he chose who he really wanted - Senator Joseph Lieberman of Connecticut.

Why Mr. McCain would want to pander to right-wing activists - who helped George W. Bush kill off his candidacy in the 2000 primaries in a particularly ugly way - is baffling. Frankly, they have no place to go. Mr. McCain would have a lot more success demonstrating his independence, and his courage, if he stood up to them the way he did in 2000.

As far as we can tell, Mr. McCain and his aides did almost no due diligence before choosing Ms. Palin, raising serious questions about his management skills. The fact that Ms. Palin's 17-year-old daughter is pregnant is irrelevant to her candidacy. There are, however, very serious questions about her political past and her ideology.

If Mr. McCain wanted to break with his party's past and choose the Republicans' first female vice presidential candidate, there are a number of politicians out there with far greater experience and stature than Ms. Palin, who has been in Alaska's Statehouse for less than two years.

Before she was elected governor, she was mayor of a tiny Anchorage suburb, where her greatest accomplishment was raising the sales tax to build a hockey rink. According to Time magazine, she also sought to have books banned from the local library and threatened to fire the librarian.

For Mr. McCain to go on claiming that Mr. Obama has too little experience to be president after almost four years in the United States Senate is laughable now that he has announced that someone with no national or foreign policy experience is qualified to replace him, if necessary.

Senator Lindsey Graham, the South Carolina Republican who has been one of Mr. McCain's most loyal friends, said Tuesday that he was certain that Ms. Palin would take the right positions on issues like Iraq, Russia's invasion of Georgia and Iran's nuclear weapons ambitions. That seemed based largely on his repeated assertion that Ms. Palin would be tended by Mr. McCain's foreign policy advisers. That was not much of an endorsement.

Some of the things Ms. Palin has had to say in the recent past about foreign policy are especially worrisome. In a speech last June to her former church in Wasilla, Ms. Palin said the war in Iraq was "a task that is from God." Mr. Bush made similar claims as he rejected all sound mortal advice on how to conduct the war.

Mr. McCain, Mr. Graham and others also claim that Ms. Palin is a fearless reformer who is committed to fighting waste, fraud and earmarks. Ms. Palin did show courage taking on some of the Alaska Republican Party's most sleazy politicians. But she also was an eager recipient of earmarked money as a mayor and governor.

Mayor Palin gathered up $27 million in subsidies from Washington, $15 million of it for a railroad from her town to the ski resort hometown of Senator Ted Stevens, now under indictment for failing to report gifts.

The Republicans are presenting Ms. Palin as a crusader against Mr. Stevens's infamous "Bridge to Nowhere." The record says otherwise; she initially supported Mr. Stevens's boondoggle, diverting the money to other projects when the bridge became a political disaster. In her speech to the Wasilla Assembly of God in June, Ms. Palin said it was "God's will" that the federal government contribute to a $30 billion gas pipeline she wants built in Alaska.

Mr. McCain will make his acceptance speech on Thursday, and Ms. Palin will speak on Wednesday. Those two appearances will go a long way to forming voters' views of this Republican ticket.

As Senator Graham noted, Mr. McCain has to reach out beyond the party's loyal base. "We're going to have to win this thing," he said. "This is not our race to lose."

Mr. McCain's hurdles are substantial. To start, he has to overcome Mr. Bush's record of failures. (The president addressed the convention Tuesday night and now, McCain strategists fervently hope, will retire quietly to the Rose Garden.) That record includes the disastrous war in Iraq, a ballooning deficit, the mortgage crisis - and the list goes on.

To address those many problems, this country needs a leader with sound judgment and strong leadership skills. Choosing Ms. Palin raises serious questions about Mr. McCain's qualifications.

Sitting here watching

Sitting here watching McCain`s speech not impressive just like Palin last night. When McCain first started in this thing he was talking alot different than he is now.He was all ending for the war where they have no business being any way and other policies he believed and seems like 3 days later his whole campaign changed and he started talking like Bush and I was truly amazed by this. All of a sudden he started sounding like Bush and shortly thereafter he was endorsed by Bush His own state won`t even endorse him. Does that tell anyone anything? Wish Hillary had won the nomination but she didn`t but she does back Obama and is a force to be dealt with. At least when she gives a speech it is done so with character and forcefulness because she believes in what she is saying unlike Palin who spoke in the same old monotone and focused on herself and here we go again that God told me to do this. How phony can you possibly be. Sounds like Bush when Bush said God told him to invade Iraq. Please that is very hard for me to believe. On top of being insulting they are adding injury to every person who has any common sense and even those who don`t apply it I don`t believe either one of them.

I am looking at the speech

I am looking at the speech of Palin. What is the plan ? There is no plan -- there is only leader McCain who supposedly grinning after a torture session with thumbs up, will lead America out of the disaster Zone it has created for itself. But How ? How is left blank --Not because it is it is unimportant but because we rather not talk about it. Why ? Because the real McCain is the one who sees war as the most powerful tool of change and economic future. This is implicitly understood in the candidacy of McCain. There is a rapist nature to what McCain has to offer to the world. Iraq is just the beginning. Georgia, Kosovo, Iran,Afghanistan -everything is an excuse to threaten and use ever larger weapons, with nuclear of course always an option. Fascism means violence within and violence without. While other countries are being bullied, internally any dissent will be stifled by the new dictator, second dictator of the US after Bush. We must act now and mobilize to make Obama our president and mobilize solutions that are based in justice, laws, international agreements and full engagement in international treaties, renewable, creative solutions, and of course mature diplomatic discourse (a seemingly forgotten art).

It's now Thursday and we've

It's now Thursday and we've heard from Vice Presidential nominee Sarah Palin. She is scary, but John McCain is scarier. He has sold out to the lowest common denominator in the Republican Party to achieve his ambition: to be Commander in Chief. As surely as the pitbull-barracuda-Sarah appeals to the party of Karl Rove and George W. Bush, the regular American voter knows better. We only love "mavericks" i n the movies; for President, we need a person with intelligence, integrity and a plan. That would be Senator Barack Obama with Senator Joe Biden riding shotgun.

Thank you to the NYT for

Thank you to the NYT for pointing out again how scary McCain is to the general public. There is no way McCain could have escaped Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome Disorder while he was a prisoner in Hanoi. He has all the classic symptoms, unable to control his temper, making bad life decisions, and erratic behavior. He has been given passes on many disturbing allegations, the Keating 5, wanting to vote against his own immigration reform legislation, voting against or not showing up to vote for troop benefits, voting against armor for the troops, etc. etc. While everybody is pondering the Bridge to Nowhere, which would have cost 300 million, everyone forgets the real Bridge to Nowhere which is the Iraq War.

It was Rep. Don Young's

It was Rep. Don Young's 'bridge to nowhere' thank you. Give the fact-checker a day off, did you? Do not underestimate the intelligence of the American voter. There generally isn't any. That's why platitudes and pretty faces win over the facts. Obama/Biden will not win by telling people the facts. People want the equivalent of Michael Phelps for VP. They got her in Palin. She's a Madison Avenue politico who can out act her opponents. Send Clinton after her. Woman to woman. But, someone on Obama's team should be watching the video of Palin's gubernatorial debates. She's a real shark. Check out the real dope on her by another Wasillan, Anne Kilkenny,http://www.washingtonindependent.com/3671/the-reform-candidate After that, I suggest we all figure out how to turn the light back on McGramps and Obama where it should be. Palin is McC's first executive decision. We've had almost 8 yrs. of 'gut decisions' and 'God's will' driving our country into the ground. Voters who matter are: Union workers - she's not your friend. Believe me. ..I've been a union wife -UBC, ASEA/AFSCME for 35 yrs. - do you want your pension plan privatized and in the toilet like Wall St.? Seniors - do you like your prescription drug plan? do you want social security privatized? Minorities - do you like racial profiling? How about that wall through Texas home/farm owner's private property to stop illegal immigration? If the GOP convention were any whiter I'd swear I was looking at the North Slope in January! Note- Wasilla High School was packed to the rafters for the Democratic caucus! I have never seen that many Democrats in Alaska in 38 yrs.! It was like that all over Alaska! So, don't paint us all as Palinbots and anti-environmental nitwits. Don't forget. . .'Drill, Baby, Drill!' will not see a drop of fuel at the pump until the after the end of McCain's second term - if he gets one! Vote 'No' on the Republican party! Palmer, Alaska

John McCain is the wrong man

John McCain is the wrong man to be President, and Sarah Palin the wrong woman to be VP. These two facts have been made clear over and over again in the press. Does that matter to the results of the election? Not if the vote is tampered with, and not if Democrats don't take the Republican election machine seriously. And not if Democrat whiners stay home in protest for not getting Hillary, and not if Obama has turned off too many of his would-be voters with his position "corrections". Not if enough people decide that the lesser of two evils is better than a candidate who more closely represents your values. And finally, not if fear is or becomes the dominant method of candidate selection. Good luck to US.

Creationist Dominionist Seces

Creationist Dominionist Secessionist Book-burner Christianist Thanks, but no thanks.

Does anybody recall "The

Does anybody recall "The Keating Five"? Although McCain was exonerated of any wrong doing, his actions and close relationship-his wife was a personal friend and business assosiate- to Charles Keating, a man responsible for a big meltdown in the savings and loan crisis was rather unsavory. In his bio, McCain defended himself by admitting to an error in judgment. This error he attributed to a flaw in own character, a disposition to follow bold risk takers such as Mr. Keating instead of heeding the advise of more prudent individuals. Big John said he was sorry and would try to contain his enthusiasm, but it happened again with the lobbyist, and his defense was more or less the same," I am just impetuous." The Republican party is full of talented people, is this ticket the best that they can do?

"Just who is going to care"

"Just who is going to care" hit the nail on the head, really for me. All this talk about "family values" and Palin is the ultimate working mother----ironically, exactly the sort of person the GOP would be attacking were she a liberal Democrat! Also, and it is hard for me to say this, but I must---this woman, on the day she began leaking amniotic fluid, insisted on remaining on a convention floor (!) to give a speech (!!!), endangering the life of the precious "baby" she was carrying. Then, instead of rushing to a hospital in nearby Houston which has some of the best medical facilities in the country, gets on a PLANE to Seattle---eight hour flight---waives all medical care in Washington----and then flies to ALASKA---rather than get medical care in Seattle---and takes yet MORE time to DRIVE to her local clinic!!! What this says to me is, that since she knew she was carrying a Down syndrome baby, that she was TRYING to make something happen so the baby would not survive. What other explanation can there be? Heck, she did everything but take a hammer to the kid's head. (Is this what right wing women do instead of a first-trimester abortion? At least that would have been honest!) Of course, she then had to cover up with an extravagant display of maternal devotion (putting a crib in her gubernatorial office, etc.) Methinks she doth protest too much!

Please keep thoughtful

Please keep thoughtful editorials like this one coming... Thanks for the good words!

Thanks for the reality

Thanks for the reality Check, folks. I just finished watching Palin's convention speech and I'm afraid (be very afraid!) that her charm, poise, humor and goldarn cuteness will cloud the minds of more sheeple.

McCain is insane. It's

McCain is insane. It's Stockholm's syndrome, but the phrase is what's important. Spread it around.

. . . and of course his

. . . and of course his selection says much more about him than anything that can be said about her. If she's a whack, he's a desperate fool.

McCain has chosen in Palin

McCain has chosen in Palin someone who reflects the very worst of his own tendencies: bigotry, intolerance, haste, and presumption. She is willing to claim God's will for her own, to deny the validity of scientific consensus in favor of selective and misquoted Biblical legend, to demand that books be banned and then to demand that unwilling librarians be fired. She does not believe that humans should have the right to control their own bodies, especially if they are women. Like those who would halt stem cell research, she should deny herself the fruits of science that contradict her limited understanding of the Bible: no photocopying, no computers or Internet, no automobiles made after the mid '90s, no use of credit cards, etc., etc. The woman is not a just inexperienced, she's a whack!

Watch the HBO documentary

Watch the HBO documentary "Friends of God" where that horny Christian Ted Haggard showed us around, asked some guy in his church how many times he had sex with his wife, and then stated that evangelical Christians have better sex.... The views of the people interviewed are exactly where Palin is coming from and where she would to take us. Yeah, it's scary and you wonder why all these churches and church organizations still have tax exempt status. From Americans United for Separation of Church and State: http://blog.au.org/2007/01/23/%E2%80%98friends-of-god%E2%80%99-hbo-film-shines-a-heavenly-light-on-america%E2%80%99s-evangelical-subculture/

Governor Palin's assertion

Governor Palin's assertion that it is God's will to build an Alaskan pipeline would be hilarious if only it were fiction. I am truly nauseated that a vice presidential nominee would ever have bolstered her policies with "approval" from Above. That Palin might attain the second-highest office in the United States is proof that the revolutionary ideals of this nation are on their last leg.

Isn't it fascinating how

Isn't it fascinating how "For Mr. McCain to go on" and "To address those many" above say exactly the same thing using almost exactly the same words and exactly the same quotes. Please, Anonymous 1 and 2, let us know which conservative website fed you the lines that you are foisting on us as your own. And if and when you are capable of framing your own thoughts, feel free to write again.

I beg to differ on the

I beg to differ on the question of whether Palin's daughter's out of wedlock pregnancy is relevant to her candidacy for VP. Ms Palin is an outspoken advocate for the Right's program of abstinence only sex mis-education. Apparently she was unable to convince her daughter to forgo pre-marital sex despite all the hype about this multi-tasking super-mother. Seems to me Palin's failure in this regard calls into question her creds as a mother and, more importantly, her ability to convince others to accept what she thinks is not only right but important enough to impose on others with a different view. Moreover, the oh-so-understanding response of Republicans to the pregnancy when contrasted with the standard castigation of poor, especially black and Hispanic, teens who get pregnant stinks of the most despicable and blatant hypocrisy.

Just who is going to care

Just who is going to care for this helpless infant when his mother is off campaigning all over the country, far away from him. Yes, working moms do a good job, but they usually aren't too far away and come home every night. Ms Palin will pay someone to take care of the baby she chose to bring into the world, while she's off touting "family values?? " And an absent mom can't help a pregnant teen who needs a lot of support right now. Sarah should at least wait awhile till her family grows up some; then she can brag about family values.

What is so baffling about

What is so baffling about McCain's choice? He wants to be president of the United States. He is making Machiavellian republican calculations intended to get him there. Republicans have held the presidency all but 12 of the last 40 years in the U.S. so they apparently know something about elections (both winning them and stealing them), even if their idea of running the country and the world is to destroy it for their own individual and corporate benefits. Do not underestimate either the ability of the Republicans to get McCain to the White House nor the capacity of the U.S. electorate for falling prey to confusion, ignorance, covert political operations, etc.

I'd like to see a "balance

I'd like to see a "balance sheet" between the two tickets showing joint experience and position on major issue.

The New York Times editorial

The New York Times editorial is right on target regarding McCain's faulty judgment. While I am supporting Senator Obama, I nonetheless hoped that McCain would pick a competent running mate in the event that he actually won and later become incapacitated. In the event of my candidate's possible defeat, I still intend to remain in this country as an active citizen and hold on to a modicum of trust in the machinery of the presidency. I have long been wary of Vice President Cheney and his nefarious actions in betraying CIA operative Valerie Plame and pursuing a disastrous war in Iraq, but I nonetheless know that Cheney has the intelligence and wherewithal to operate the executive branch if required. I never thought I would have but one kind word to say for the current vice president but McCain has pushed my hand.

Maybe God told him to choose

Maybe God told him to choose her. Scary isn't it.

Thank you for a substantive

Thank you for a substantive view of this important subject. I am quite concerned about the prospect of a person with no experience in the Federal Government, and short experience in state governance being chosen to step into the Presidency if a President McCain were to become incapacitated. Her personal life problems are relatively irrelevant, but her actions and choices as a mayor and as a governor, her statements that reveal the same fundamentalist mindset as George Bush are great cause for alarm. I consider myself an Independent. I will not vote for this ticket.

Quite frankly, this latest

Quite frankly, this latest decision by McCain is just another in a long list of bad decisions he's made. I expect it will get longer still up until 4 November. And if by some chance (or chicanery) he gains the Presidency, his decisions after his inauguration may destroy our Democracy.

There are f***ing millions

There are f***ing millions of reasons to question Mr. McCain's judgement...Ms. Palin's selection as candidate foe V.P. is just the tip of the proverbial and rapidly melting iceberg. Let's call it like it is!

What Palin and her ilk

What Palin and her ilk demonstrate is not really faith at all; it's a parody of faith.

This is a shell of the John

This is a shell of the John McCain that I switched parties to vote for in the 2000 Primaries. This is essentially the W. Bush who McCain fought so hard against in 2000. I don't recognize him anymore!

" For Mr. McCain to go on

" For Mr. McCain to go on claiming that Mr. Obama has too little experience to be president after almost four years in the United States Senate is laughable now that he has announced that someone with no national or foreign policy experience is qualified to replace him, if necessary." You seem to forget that most of the time the one-term US Senator has spent in the Senate, he has spent running for the President of the US. The Washington Post has a record of his NO VOTEs. Pathetic!!!! As far as his selection for the VP: BIDEN: THE MAN FROM MASTERCARD Ralph Nader - Biden will have a tough time when people find out that as MBNA's man in the Senate--MBNA has been his biggest financial backer, after contributing $214,000 over his career--he was the long-time champion and key architect of, in the words of Chair of the Senate Banking Committee, Senator Chris Dodd, "one of the "worst bills ever," the anti-consumer bankruptcy law, which helped pave the way for the present foreclosure crisis by shifting the risk for engaging in predatory lending practices from predatory lenders to hapless borrowers. . . He was the one who worked through two presidential administrations to ram this legislation through, first with President Clinton who had the good sense to veto it, and then President Bush who had the moral bankruptcy to sign it. .

"To address those many

"To address those many problems, this country needs a leader with sound judgment and strong leadership skills. Choosing Ms. Palin raises serious questions about Mr. McCain's qualifications." Choosing an IL Senator, Community Organizer(?), and one-term US Senator raises serious questions about the Democratic Party. I would also question Obama's choice of VP: BIDEN: THE MAN FROM MASTERCARD Ralph Nader - Biden will have a tough time when people find out that as MBNA's man in the Senate--MBNA has been his biggest financial backer, after contributing $214,000 over his career--he was the long-time champion and key architect of, in the words of Chair of the Senate Banking Committee, Senator Chris Dodd, "one of the "worst bills ever," the anti-consumer bankruptcy law, which helped pave the way for the present foreclosure crisis by shifting the risk for engaging in predatory lending practices from predatory lenders to hapless borrowers. . . He was the one who worked through two presidential administrations to ram this legislation through, first with President Clinton who had the good sense to veto it, and then President Bush who had the moral bankruptcy to sign it.
