Washington - A federal judge on Saturday ordered Dick Cheney to preserve a wide range of records from his time as vice president.

The decision by the judge, Colleen Kollar-Kotelly, is a setback for the Bush administration in its effort to promote a narrow definition of materials that must be safeguarded under the Presidential Records Act.

The Bush administration's legal position "heightens the court's concern" that some records might not be preserved, Judge Kollar-Kotelly said.

A private group, Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, is suing Mr. Cheney and the Executive Office of the President to ensure that no presidential records are destroyed or handled in a way that makes them unavailable to the public.

In a 22-page opinion, Judge Kollar-Kotelly revealed that in recent days, lawyers for the Bush administration balked at a proposed agreement between the two sides on how to proceed with the case.

Mr. Cheney and the other defendants in the case, Judge Kollar-Kotelly wrote, "were only willing to agree to a preservation order that tracked their narrowed interpretation" of the Presidential Records Act.

The administration, the judge said, wanted any court order on what records are at issue in the suit to cover only the office of the vice president, not Mr. Cheney or the other defendants in the lawsuit. The other defendants include the National Archives and the archivist of the United States.

In response to the ruling, a spokesman for Mr. Cheney, James R. Hennigan, said, "We will not have any comment on pending litigation."

The lawsuit stems from Mr. Cheney's position that his office is not part of the executive branch of government.

This summer, Mr. Cheney's chief of staff, David S. Addington, told Congress that the vice president belongs to neither the executive nor legislative branch of government, but rather is attached by the Constitution to Congress. The vice president presides over the Senate.

The lawsuit alleges that the Bush administration's actions over the past seven and a half years raise questions over whether the White House will turn over records created by Mr. Cheney and his staff to the National Archives in January.

He will foolishly shred all

He will foolishly shred all of his papers. Some of them might even exonerate him from his upcoming trial on crimes against humanity. Because he destroyed his documents, the onus will be on him to prove himself innocent of any charges. He will shred his documents at his own peril.

THE PEOPLE--you and me--have

THE PEOPLE--you and me--have not only the RIGHT, but the DUTY under the Declaration of Independence, to seize criminals such as this one, and try them for their crimes.

Are you kidding? He will

Are you kidding? He will destroy everything except those documents he holds onto to blackmaile others. The court will hold him in contempt (as most patriotic Constitution loving Americans already do) and King Georgie II will pardon him. He'll go cash in his stock options, kickbacks and blood money and live the rest of his life as a very rich, very evil man, without any regard for the American people or history. He and his buddies got theirs. And the $700 Billion Bailout is another great con job on America, and all the rich boys there will have their personal wealth preserved as the final exit strategy.

Cheney can't turn over what

Cheney can't turn over what "never existed".

What I am interested in the

What I am interested in the utmost is the pages and investigation into 9-11.....I have been reading a lot and seeing video's that is starting to make even me wonder what really happened!!! We may never really know what happened but it was NOT handled properly!! God Bless this country I am in fear that we that is the only way!

He's already thrown out, or

He's already thrown out, or maybe hidden (?), a bunch of his papers, hasn't he? I remember reading about it a couple of years ago, and seeing a photo of a big truck that pulled up in front of his residence or office or whatever, to haul it all away. What needs to be thrown out is him. And his boss. And the rest of those misguided people in Washington. Secrecy has no place in government.

Be assured that Cheney will

Be assured that Cheney will not preserve any papers. He has spent nearly 8 years thumbing his nose at Law, Order, Principle. the Nation, its people, their Constitution, the Congress... Surely, there cannot be anyone who believes that the order of some "woman" judge is going to have some affect on this misanthrope. "No one is above the law..." How quaintly naive! Of course they are above th law, else they would not have been (s)elected in 2000. I would venture a guess that more American's know more about an Anterior Cruciate Ligament and where it's located than could find iraq on the map... More American males consider the Surge as a NFL play where there is an extreme "blitz" of the opposing quarterback. Cheney is not the least bit worried about anyone seeing any of his papers or notes, because it just is not going to happen. Oh, he may get a 'scolding' or stern "talking to"... but nothing more. Vermin like Imhofe, McConnell, Stevens, Bohner will be proposing bridges, airports, buildings etc. be renamed in his honor..."

No one is above the law . I

No one is above the law . I hope all is revieled and in the end this administration goes down as the worst ever . What they have done to this once great country is beyond belief . May the truth be told and justice be done . Goss bless us all....we need her blessing more than ever.

He is a public servant and

He is a public servant and NOTHING he does should be secret. What kind of country is this, anyway, facist? Dictatorship? Corporatracy?
