Congress Still Corrupt and Useless

    For those who thought Tom Delay's departure would really change anything in Congress, this past week was a strong cup of coffee. On Capitol Hill, politics and greed still trump the good of the nation, still trump the Constitution, still trump all.

    While nothing that happened in Washington this past week was new or should have surprised anyone, we were nonetheless served clear notice, anew, that this is a democracy under siege.

    In one week, Congress authorized one hundred and sixty two billion US taxpayer dollars to extend for another year the illegal and immoral occupation of Iraq, and rewrote federal law to specifically pardon criminal actions by the nation's largest telecommunications companies. No one really noticed that a retired US general bluntly accused the Bush administration of war crimes. He could just as easily have accused Congress of the same. They are just as guilty.

    It's often said that there is no difference between Democrats and Republicans. False. The vast majority of honest public servants in Congress are Democrats. However, it would not be safe to say that the majority of Democrats are honest public servants. About half of the Democrats and a small handful of Republicans take seriously their sworn oaths. The rest would be arrested in any other walk of life.

    It has been reported in our publication and elsewhere that Democratic Congressional leaders sought to address the issue of war funding as quickly as possible. Some in Democratic leadership feared that the issue might prove a burden in an election year. A political consideration. In the end, Democratic leadership accelerated, without significant opposition, the pace at which the latest war funding bill was brought to a vote. It passed well before it was required and well before the fall elections. The die is cast, the nation is committed to another year of bloody war and all of its crimes, so that we can vote for the leaders who took this action without having to think about it.

    In December 1974, Seymour Hersh, writing for The New York Times, revealed that the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) had, under orders from Nixon, violated its charter and engaged in warrantless domestic spying on American citizens, on American soil. The practice Hersh pointed out had been going on for years. Hersh's report led to the creation in April 1976 of the Church Committee, named after its chairman, Senator Frank Church, a Democrat from Idaho. The Church Committee reports, which should be required reading for all Americans, detailed systemic warrantless domestic spying on and surveillance of Americans by a host of federal government agencies including the CIA, the IRS, the US Postal Service and the National Security Agency (NSA).

    As a result first of Hersh's story and the subsequent findings of the Church Committee, Congress passed the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act of 1978, (FISA). FISA's express purpose was to make illegal presidential directives that would authorize warrantless domestic spying. It might just as well have been called the Nixon Act because it was a direct consequence of his Stalinesque abuses. FISA worked well for roughly 23 years.

    Enter George W. Bush and Richard B. Cheney, et al. Essentially Bush, Cheney, their families and allies are monarchists, autocrats and on occasion, when they feel the need arises, fascists. They have little patience with Democratic process, and less patience with Congressional interference. In short, to the Bush crew FISA was an insult. They deliberately and knowingly broke the law, directing the NSA to employ its electronic surveillance capabilities on American citizens on American soil without warrants, and enlisting successfully the aid and comfort of most of the nation's largest telecommunications companies in the illegal effort.

    The Bush administration argues that it did so to protect Americans after 9/11. That argument is flawed for two reasons. First, all statutes that prohibit warrantless domestic spying point out specifically that such restrictions are not to be dispensed with due to - any - immediate threat, including national security, except as specified by law. Second, there is significant evidence that authorization for warrantless domestic spying came from the Oval Office well before 9/11.

    Who, then, will confront those who would break the law under cover of executive privilege? Congress, of course, is designated under the Constitution to address violations of law by the executive branch. But not this Congress. This Congress, handed a sweeping mandate with one of the largest nationwide electoral victories in US history, a mandate from the American people for confronting massive illegality at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, this Congress has utterly abdicated. This Congress has not only abdicated; it has capitulated and conspired to circumvent the Constitution. That is the FISA legislation that this Congress has passed. The war funding legislation is worse; it is authored in innocent blood and unending human suffering.

    Today this US Congress stands in opposition to the Constitution, and in opposition to the American people. The American people might well be expected to stand in opposition to Congress as well.

Finally I read an op-ed and thread that taps into the massive rage I feel on a daily basis. All the malfeasance and criminality of this administration and congress in the last 7+ years has given me a true understanding and empathy for the radical groups of the sixties and the violence that they perpetuated for their causes. Prior, being born post-60's, I could never relate to that mindset being a pacifist myself. But the blatant actions of our government officials in the last 7+ years has been so thorough in the insight it's given me ... I understand thoroughly now how boundaries of outrage can be so utterly shattered to engender sixties type radical groups and domestic terrorists that are byproducts of our government actions alone that so blatantly reveal corruption at every level with no recourse. Before the turn on the century, I lived under the naively ignorant illusion of how the constitutional checks and balances actually do protect us from an utterly incompetent and corrupt president. Oh how so wrong was I. It makes so much sense now why this administration began its quest for illegal wiretapping by successfully strong arming phone companies to comply with their subpoena-less domestic wiretapping directives SIX MONTHS before 911. To rip from its roots any activist group from having any success in organizing movements, violent or otherwise, to protest the free hand criminality that this administration expected to operate under. And no, I'm not speaking as a 911 conspiracist, but the concerted indifference perpetrated by the administration in ignoring flaming red flags prior to 911 should be considered criminal negligence in itself. And how can our citizenry denounce a Mugabe government when our administration perpetrates similar tactics in order to remain in power, the only difference being subvert/covert repression and intimidation instead of overt? The only hope left, I believe, does not come from within our country as we've been revealed as either too ignorant or complacent to care about the depths of political expedience and corruption. Nor do I consider violent radicalism an answer, even though I can finally understand it. No, the only hope is for the continued rise of other superpowers (BRIC: Brazil, Russia, India, China) along with the EU so we may have a multi-polar world again. It's sad fact that we're incapable of policing ourselves as a lone superpower. Multi-Polarism of course has the drawback of increasing the likelihood that we will obliterate ourselves as some point in the future. But it's only in such conditions that rules like international law and the Geneva conventions not be so arrogantly brushed aside by American leaders as not applying to them, and indictments at The Hague carry teeth to hold accountable our elected criminals that perpetrate acts of mass murder and genocide due to imperialistic ambitions and personal gain.

I read somewhere recently the secret, "behind-the-scenes" reason why Congress will not challenge Bush & Cheney on their extra-constitutional activities is due to blackmail. Yes, our Government eavesdrops on U.S. citizens (including members of Congress) and then uses the information to control people's behavior. Just a thought -- it would certainly explain an almost irrational reluctance [fear] to challenge the Bush Administration on the several dozen violations of the Constitution, federal, and international laws.

I won't fly the American flag again until the bush administration is on trial in an international war crimes trial...You hear me military people? I'm an American and the military does not serve my interests anymore by following orders.

oh...and forget Nader, he is not the answer. Julian Bond would be good. But nothing will help, it is too late or, perhaps, it is impossible. The media is lockstep ridiculous, Congress in entrenched with blue dogs and those more interested in cocktails and elbow-rubbing and golf trips to exotic locales, and the public is getting dumber and dumber and are not only uninformed but inundated with half truths and outright fabrications so often, they believe teh exact opposite of what is true. And those youth we invest such hope in are brand-crazy, consumer oriented, thus ripe to be picked when the powers figure out how finally to manipulate them. They will stay home or vote the wrong way at the polls. Obama is turning into Hillary Clinton, triangulating and drifting not to the center as teh party lines like to claim, but to the right. That he was "most liberal" was aalways silly. lieberman, Lugar, his history is far from liberal, and how would his voting record be better than Feingold, Saunders, Boxer, Ted Kennedy, etc.?

Justice Scalia last week wrote that there is a Constitutional right to form a well-regulated militia to fight government abuse. I realize he contradicted himself saying guns can be barred from government buildings, so he makes no sense. But forget that, he never makes any coherent sense anyway, but he did say well-regulated militias to oppose government abuse are constitutional. Fiber will regulate them, all the gang of four plus one do is twist language to suit their ends, so why not fiber regulated militias. So let's form one and if not allowed inside the buildings we wait until they come out and arrest them all. I am sure calia and Thomas and Roberts and Alito will approve.

For all of you who want a

For all of you who want a revolution - and all of who should - I offer the following though. Greed, corporations, stuff we don't need, stuff we don't use, stuff we toss out with the garbage, politics as we know it: what they have in common is you and I. It is time to rethink capitalism and its limitations. Capitalism is based on the assumption of waste; it breeds waste, and war is the greatest kind of waste. All that is wasted must be replaced, at greater cost. What would be truly revolutionary would be to SERIOUSLY question that waste. Stop shopping - yes, even on the Internet - on Sundays; stop buying what you do not need; and fight like the devil to tax the rich at the same standards that prevailed in the 1950s when we actually had a middle class. Stop playing the idiotic game of believing that you will win the lottery and become one of "them". You won't. You are one of us. Join together and "starve the beast" of corporate greed. Use the free time you gain to participate in your family and community. In turn, that will help to restore some semblance of sanity, if not democracy, to this country.

This line of thinking sounds familiar to me. It keeps coming from someone who could do something about it but we refuse to allow him. That person is Ralph Nader. Whatever affliction that stops people from supporting him is at the heart of the crises we now face.

I hope that Cindy Sheehan runs against and defeats Nancy Pelosi in November. I am very disappointed in John Conyers for not holding hearings investigating the Bush administration for possible impeachment of Bush, Cheney, et al. Yet despite these issues and more the democrats in congress are better than the republicans. The real issue is one of building a better approach than cut taxes and go to war. People like simple solutions to very complex problems.

United States of America

United States of America doesn't exist anymore. I just had this Truthout story up on my computer while This Week with George Stephanopoulos was on the TV. As Arianna Huffington was speaking the TV image and audio froze. It started again a little later, but I missed what she was saying. I saw this same kind of thing happen several weeks when Bill Moyers was on Charlie Rose talking about the Gulf of Token. Brief TV outages. These things are similiar to what happened when 60 Minutes was airing the Gov. Sieglemann story and there was "technical problems" in Alabama.

I agree with most everything

I agree with most everything that has been said in all these comments. The Bush/Cheney administration should have all been impeached. I hope they get tried for war crimes after they leave office. It`s a shame that the American people have let themselves be so duped by such corrupt people. How much money can they possibly want? When the pesidential election was bought bought by Bush back in 2000 that should have told the American people what was going on as we all know he didn`t win it.

The biggest problem is the corporate ownership of the television media. This allows corrupt politicians to prevail, and the scope of candidates to be artificially narrowed. A true patriotic candidate, such as Dennis Kucinich, is shut out of debates, and hence not given enough media attention - hence doesn't have a chance at winning --- the democratic nomination. Third party candidates have been completely shut out as well. The public remains ignorant for the most part. Even the majority, who are against the war, are against THIS WAR, but could be easily fooled into supporting another war, at the drop of a hat. Corporate control of the media, and this war culture must end. It is not healthy for our country nor our future. Our infustructure is crumbling, and our constitution is being used as scrap paper. No one should vote for a Republican for the next 30 years (at least) and we should all be skeptical of some of the democrats who are wolves in sheeps clothing. The public MUST become more educated. George Carlin was right: this nation's done. Both sides of the aisle have been selling us out to foreign lenders, foreign industry, and the military-industrial complex for decades. If there were a second American Revolution, and our Illustrious Leaders didn't crush it like a bug with all their domestic spying and illegal domestic use of the military, then they'd all just escape to some other part of the planet. If you take this ignorant, zealous, brutal, polarized nation into civil war, it won't stop until we're just a larger version of Liberia or Somalia. A third-world hell-hole, ready for our new Chinese masters to step in and pick up the pieces. If we can't start changing the dialog to discussions of social class, and finding common ground within the electorate, rather than Dems vs. Reps, black vs. white, Left vs. Right, etc., then we as a nation are boned. The inbred, patrician 'tards that rule us will continue to lie to our face, use the smoke and mirrors of their media to shake more imaginary bogeymen in our faces, and won't rest until either the world is at constant war, or tipped over into irreversible climate change. -Or both. These people are all gangsters. Start learning to fight them without going over to open violence, because they will think nothing of killing millions of us, and they have the tools to do it. The safest course is to put them out with a giant upheaval of the electorate, and that will take commitment like some nut-bar jihadist can only dream of. Is anybody ready for that? Is the average American ready for that? I didn't think so.

Part of the huge Iraq war

Part of the huge Iraq war funding bill will be used to fund the upcoming attack on Iran. The Bush/Cheney Junta diverted monies from the Afghanistan war in 2002 to fund the upcoming invasion of Iraq and not a damned peep out of Congress. Face it, We the People have lost control of our governement. Both the Congress and the Executive Branch have placed the wants and needs of Israel ahead of their sworn oath to the Constitution. Either get used to being under the boot of Tyranny or rise up and throw off the shackles of oppression, courtesy of the 21st's Century version of King George III.

So let's prosecute Bush

So let's prosecute Bush after he leaves office for this crime. He can't pardon himself and the discovery process in that matter would shed some light on things. That's all any of these last few months have been about and the next few months will be about...limiting our access to information in the future that might lead to criminal prosecutions in the years to come. I've always felt that if this admin. had any guts they'd stand up and say what they are doing and expose it to the light of day to justify their actions. But they don't and they're not going to and we're all screaming into the wind while standing in the wilderness. Rock on.

When is violent revolution

When is violent revolution wise or legitimate? The Founding Fathers would not have tolerated this. Should we? Are there patriots enough among us? The Supreme Court has upheld our Constitutional right to bear arms in the interest of resisting tyranny. Is it time we arm ourselves? And what would be the outcome? Where would we turn for order? Why not our state governments? Perhaps the anti-federalists were right after all and it is time to break up the union. Is it time for small sovereign states with governments that are more accountable? How to organize? The current government is not nearly as tolerant as the British. They will not sit idly by as we gather to plan our independence. Were to begin? Here? When? Now, with a question?

Someone suggested that we

Someone suggested that we elect Democrats and then in two years replace them with Democrats with spines. As a Democrat I have always felt that we need to clean house from within the Party, the more we speak out and withhold our financial support the closer we will come to having a Party that will do the right thing vs doing the expedient thing. As far a Bob Barr and the Constitutional Party - here's a short history lesson. The Constitutional Party was once the U.S. Taxpayers Party originating with the Militia of Montana. Just get on their website and you'll find that they're no different than any other NeoNazi site. Just because they say they believe in the Constitution doesn't mean that they actually do, they're not sure about the Bill of Rights and believe that most of it should be abolished. And remember, Bob Barr is the guy who said, "We impeached Bill Clinton because we could."

I think that, for the sake

I think that, for the sake of political expediency, Nancy Pelosi has betrayed the mandate given to Congressional Democrats in 2006 by derailing a reformist agenda in the name of..."moving America forward." Because of her treasonous stewardship of that mandate, America has moved not forward but further down into an abyss (i.e., approval of continued funding for the Iraq War; granting of immunity to telecoms; failure to impeach). It is clear that, regardless of who wins in November, things will get worse. Even if he insists on half of the changes he proposes in his campaign speeches - an undependable assumption - this Congress of appeasers will not allow Barack Obama to realize the degree and depth of change America needs to reverse the damage done by Bush/Cheney. This Congress is an active and willing agent of that damage.

There are increasing

There are increasing indications that the Republicans are planing another terror attack or scare tactic before November. Any sign of being week on national security and blocking terror prevention measures could and would be used against the Democrats. The sad truth is that a big part of the electorate is scared to death and plain stupid. The goals of Democrats has to be to gain the White House even as it means temporary sacrifices. Too much is at stake. Once there is a democratic President and a big democratic majority in Congress there can be "house" cleaning. I hope a lot of "enablers" will go to jail. One of my favorite quotes is one from Benjamin Franklin: "Those who are willing to give up essential freedoms for a temporary increase in security deserve neither freedom nor security." If there should be no consequences under a democratic president then the people will certainly get what they deserve.

When I read that my Congressperson, Michael Acuri, Democrat NY 24th District voted for the Compromise FISA Bill on June 20, I was furious. I will NEVER vote for him again and I consider that he violated his oath to uphold the Constitution of the United States. For Shame! I wish that my Congressperson was Maurice Hinchey, a true Democrat and defender of the Constitution

The Democrats and American

The Democrats and American people are just plain stupid. All of this evil has gone on right in your face. And it continues to go on. Look at the election of Lieberman in Conn. Here's a guy who lost in the primary on the chickenhawk ticket so he betrays the Democratic Party and basic principles of democracy and the dumbass Americanselect him in a 3-party race and the stupid Democrats welcome him right back into the family even giving him important committee chairmanships. America is a sick country. The people are grossly ignorant and too stupid to govern themselves. They had every chance to turn the GOP and the wars etc. on their ear. I personally hope you Americans get what coming to you. You deserve all that's happening to you and nothing less. In a real democracy with intelligent voters the GOP would get about 10% of the vote.

this is a great article and certainly truer than true, and its so good to see this truth expressed. it is obvious i believe to anyone who has eyes to see and ears to hear: the system is failing, it IS corrupt, it has lost the balance, truth and humanity it was supposed to defend and protect. to me its simple: capitalistic greed has taken over democracy and has become the tail wagging the dog in a big way. congress is shameful... politics and business....POWER and MONEY rule the world. healthcare, education, energy, food...in a humane society these areas should be provided to the citizens of the world as human rights...and the profit motive should be removed from war. its disgusting and a blight on the human spirit to spend 1/2 trillion dollars a year on 'defense', propagating a devastating malicious ignorance...while REAL people suffer a myriad of preventable circumstances. those responsible should be held accountable if there is to be any shred of human dignity recouped.

Democrats are part of the

Democrats are part of the problem, not the solution. They took over Congress in 2006 and what have they done? Given Bush all the war money he's asked for and more. FISA. Telco immunity. Re-authorizing the Patriot Act. When are people going to realize that they're all jackals serving corporations and the wealthy. The only difference is that Democrats use a veneer of populism to keep their base from defecting and the Republicans use a veneer of family values for the same reason. As long as we go along with this charade of a democracy we'll never get anything better. Vote for Nader or don't vote. But whatever you do, don't vote Democrat unless you want the corporate domination of our government to continue and the US's military domination of the planet to continue. Obama and McCain both agree that the US has every right to use its military power as it sees fit.

I have to write more on this, all the people blaming Bushes mess on congress. I write to all three of my congress people every day! A bunch of you just want to sit around and whine and complain and play the blame game. The hell with you. If you do not do something about it, shame on you. My representatives from Maryland voted against the war resolution and I profoundly thanked them. They vote much better than the average congress person. It's up to you to get on your congress person's ass!

When I signed the petition at democrats.com to urge Congress to adopt Rep. Kucinich's 35 articles of Impeachment against George W. Bush, I included the following note to my congresswoman. I feel just as strongly today... "The failure of this Congress to fulfill its constitutional duties under our designed system of checks and balances, in my opinion, is tantamount to treason. I urge every member of Congress to remember the day you first stood in our capitol, raised your hand, and swore an oath to protect and defend the constitution of the United States, to finally do the right thing. This administration may be nearing a close, but our posterity and our dignity would be best served by the shedding of light on the awful truth of the criminal gang that has hijacked our nation for the last seven and a half years. This administration has corrupted, ignored, and violated not only the laws of our country, but the basic principles by which we as Americans define ourselves, our history, and our legacy. We The People have not been well represented by our President, nor by our Congress - and you as our leaders must stand up and uphold the glorious legacy of our founding fathers. You must behave in the manner you would expect Washington, Jefferson, Adams, Lincoln, and Kennedy would have behaved. You must not allow this President and this Vice-President to serve one more day than absolutely necessary. If you do not act now, may history judge you and this administration as harshly as the German Parliament and the 1933 swearing in of Hitler as German Chancellor. Please do not fail us, the American People, your people again. Stand up now and be Patriots. Third, FISA specifically

Third, FISA specifically states that even a sitting President can be indicted for violating FISA. Unless the Justice Department has been front-loaded with the king's minions and sycophants, which FISA apparently never expected. And fourth, after seven+ years of unfettered, warrantless spying on all Americans, not a single "terrorist" has been caught as a result, not a single "sleeper cell" has been uncovered, not a single "terror" plot thwarted. The voting public has a lot

The voting public has a lot of recourse to changing Washington, but pissants who have given up hope let people like Bush win elections. A bigger problem is that young people have never voted before to change an election, except in some of the primaries. In Iowa the youth voted for Obama helping him get a big win. In New Hampshire they didn't and Clinton held on. If Obama loses, it will be because young voters lost interest and did not vote. If Gore or Kerry had been able to make youth go out and vote, Washington would be a better place today for sure. It is basically up to the youth to get out and vote and change this country once and for all. For those youth that are not going to vote for Obama, shame on you and you will live with the consequences. A lot of people are blaming congress for not cleaning up Bushes mess. I think we need to focus more on how we will clean it up after we win big in November.

Most of us have a Free Vote

To all who don't like our present Congress, or
who don't like our two main candidates: You
should ask yourself, "Do you live in a swing
state. Most of us do not.

And if you don't live in a swing state, then
you have a Free Vote. You will be using your
vote much more effectively if you vote for whom
you want to vote for -- perhaps Bob Barr, perhaps
Cynthia McKinney, or whomever -- than simply
adding to, or subtracting from, the prevailing
climate in your state.

We have a duopoly at present. Quarrelsome, but
joined at the hip in believing, and in urging
USAns to believe, that they are the only alternatives.
Don't encourage them.

True, your boy, or girl, won't attain office. But
your vote will help to free up the duopoly, and
hence make us all more free.

How do you get rid of a corrupt Congress and Administration without overthrowing the "elected" government? Perhaps it is time for the 2nd American Revolution. The situation the country faces today is far, far worse than what it faced at the hands of Britain in the 1700s. Too many in Congress, government and the corporations are profiting from the illegal war and so there is no force acting in the interest of the people who are ultimately paying for all of this.

Instead of supporting outfits like the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) and the Senate equivalent, which are focused on helping incumbents, we should use the info power of the 'Net to directly support committed progressives who are not yet co-opted, intimidated, or bought off. Groups like Progressive Democrats of America (http://www.pdamerica.org) -- among others -- seem to do a good job of identifying these new candidates. I prefer sending support directly to these candidates, instead of through the slush funds of the spineless incumbents we must replace.

There must be a way to weed

There must be a way to weed out those thieves who can't see beyond their wallets, and maybe pocketbooks. There should be a term limit for congress. Most of those people get nothing done anyway or at least not for the public good so what is the difference if they switch out every 2nd term like the president. Every congressman or woman needs a serious watchdog committee attached to their work so the public can be better informed of what they actually do for their constituents. Thank you, thank you, thank you for speaking out.... I keep asking my Obama friends....."Why does he keep voting for continued/increased spending in Iraq?" We have a 2% approval rating in Iraq. Can we PLEASE leave these poor people alone.... Let us resolve to turn the administration officials, from the president and vice president on down, who have been involved in what are war crimes and crimes against humanity, over to the International Court in the Hague for trial. Forget impeachment, it isn't going to fly - but after the next election there is a real chance for war crimes action.

While I don't agree with the stands Congress, as a whole is taking on this issue, I think Congress as a representative body is voting the wishes of those who actually elected them, even if some or most of those may have changed their mnds; some who oppose the war believe that the consecuences of too fast a withdrawal would be worse than where we are. Congress is a body slow to change, it is in its design. So keep pushing, and we'll get there, condemn everyone in Congress and we won't.

The voting public has little recourse to change the persons in Washington. Few real options are ever offered in the voting booth by either party. It is time for all candidates to run as Independents. The monies put forth this spring in the name of primary choices could have fed a third world country for a quite awhile. No more primaries just the November election of Independents.
