Huge Rise in Birth Defects in Falluja

Iraqi former battle zone sees abnormal clusters of infant tumours and deformities.

Fallujah - Doctors in Iraq's war-ravaged enclave of Falluja are dealing with up to 15 times as many chronic deformities in infants and a spike in early life cancers that may be linked to toxic materials left over from the fighting.

The extraordinary rise in birth defects has crystallised over recent months as specialists working in Falluja's over-stretched health system have started compiling detailed clinical records of all babies born.

Neurologists and obstetricians in the city interviewed by the Guardian say the rise in birth defects – which include a baby born with two heads, babies with multiple tumours, and others with nervous system problems - are unprecedented and at present unexplainable.

It's hard to understand why these defects are considered "unexplainable." The explanation is simple: the profligate use of "depleted" uranium-tipped munitions in the siege of Fallujah (as well as all over Iraq and Afghanistan), along with white phosphorus and god-knows what other toxic/carcinogenic/mutagenic substances were deployed in that blatantly revenge-fueled assault. Is the explanation just not perceived, or is there a concerted cover-up going on to preclude what REALLY needs to happen. War crimes investigation/prosecutions anyone?

Problems with agriculture

Problems with agriculture and nutrition add to the risk factors and should be dealt with as well by a U.S. government aspiring to do the right thing for the Iraqi people. Given top-level agriculture appointees, it is hard to believe the right thing can be done by this administration. I don't see a willingness to address birth defects in the U.S.

These birth defects may be unprecedented, but as other posters have noted, they are completely explicable. Every school child knows that radioactive substances cause birth defects. Surely neurologists and obstetricians know this as well. Who is it that wants this seen as "unexplainable"? My guess it that they are located in a certain five sided building in Washington, D.C.

Depleted uranium by itself is the most probable cause of the birth defects and it is amazing they wouldn't say that. It's called radiological warfare and it's meant to contaminate for at least a million years.
