Despite what the mainstream news media choose to report, Senator John McCain of Arizona is not the last remaining Republican candidate for president today. Congressman Ron Paul of Texas never abandoned his run for the GOP nomination, and he fully intends to present himself before the Republican National Convention in September as a true conservative alternative to McCain's status-quo candidacy. In fact, according to a recent blog report published by The Los Angeles Times, Paul looks to do more than merely show up at the door.

"Largely under the radar of most people," reported the Times, "the forces of Rep. Ron Paul have been organizing across the country to stage an embarrassing public revolt against Sen. John McCain when Republicans gather for their national convention in Minnesota at the beginning of September. They hope to demonstrate their disagreements with McCain vocally at the convention through platform fights and an attempt to get Paul a prominent speaking slot. Paul, who's running unopposed in his home Texas district for an 11th House term, still has some $5 million in war funds and has instructed his followers that their struggle is not about a single election, but a long-term revolution for control of the Republican Party."

Representative Paul has been an iconoclastic presence within the Republican Party for nearly thirty years, beginning his political career in opposition to President Nixon's decision to take America off the gold standard. He secured the Libertarian Party nomination for president in 1988, running against Vice President George H.W. Bush and Governor Michael Dukakis. Primarily motivated by economic issues and a strongly held interpretation of the Constitution, Paul has become more of a political maverick within his party than John McCain could ever hope to be.

In the time he has spent in the House of Representatives, Paul has authored and sponsored bills to repeal the War Powers Act, impose term limits on elected officials, and abolish income taxes. He submitted legislation banning abortion, not at the behest of the Religious Right; his years of work as an obstetrician were the foundation of his views on life and conception.

Ron Paul even attempted to pass legislation requiring members of Congress to read each bill entirely before voting on it. This was inspired by Congress passing the massive and intrusive Patriot Act in 24 hours, before anyone reviewed its text. He has been a staunch opponent of the Iraq occupation from the beginning, and sponsored legislation in 2003 seeking to repeal the war authorization he had opposed months before.

In sum and substance, Representative Paul is a breed apart within the confines of the Republican Party. One may disagree with some of the positions he takes or some of the votes he has cast, but he is far removed from the calcified evangelical hypocrisy that has come to define the modern GOP. His is a mind at work, and those who follow him may yet prevail in rescuing the Republican Party from the stagnated failures of the last three decades. September's GOP convention could very well mark the beginning of some interesting times for what once was the party of Lincoln and TR. Events in the north country come Fall will warrant close scrutiny if Paul has a say in the matter.

I don't get it. This article

I don't get it. This article is headlined as an interview with Ron Paul. Where's the interview? This piece's only quote is from the NYT, and even that is about Paul, not by him. I was looking forward to reading a conversation, not a commentary.

It's too bad we didn't get

It's too bad we didn't get to hear more from Ron Paul during the GOP debates. He's got several ideas with tremendous merit in this 'fluff is serious business' political era we find ourselves in. It looks like he has plans to make the GOP convention something more than a simple rubber stamp process for Senator McCain... and that's good.

For all his good ideas, we

For all his good ideas, we must remember that Ron Paul is anti-choice and anti-immigrant.

I really appreciate

I really appreciate TruthOut's alternative press account of Ron Paul for the benfit of the American public. Ron Paul is no dummy. He's a much better option for Americans who don't want any more spending doled out for wars in the middle east. Everywhere I turn someone else is trying to squelch Ron Paul. I am thankful that this candidate represents the issues I care about and that he has persisted in the face of vicious opposition.

The excellent interview is

The excellent interview is on the vidio link. Defending the Constitution is not only the sworn job of the elected officials, but the best way to defend the freedoms and liberties of all Americans.

A couple of definitions to

A couple of definitions to help clarify what the preceding anonymous poster intended. Anti-Choice: Someone doesn't get the choice as to whether or not to kill you without either consulting you or being charged with a crime. Anti-Immigrant: To uphold existing laws regarding the proper channels through which immigration occurs. Hope that helps. Read the Manifesto!

I am watching with awe how

I am watching with awe how America is tumbling into a precipice. I believe that a tandem of Ron Paul as President and Barack Obama as Vice-President might stop this fall and save your country. You need to unite your country, heal the separation lines between people, otherwise you will not be able to face the future. I am very serious and I would really wish you to overcome this difficult period.

I identify as Independent -

I identify as Independent - politically liberal, financially conservative. What I've heard from Ron Paul is almost all things that I can agree with - except for one thing. The one issue I have a bone to pick with him on is abortion,: having gone through one, I believe that every woman should have the right to decide when and IF she bears a child and that such a decision is, in the final outcome, hers and hers alone to make. I retain some respect for him on that issue because his position i coming from his experience and not his interpretation of some two-thousand-year-old book, but I still think it is a moral issue that is best left to the woman herself. Other than that, I would be happy to see Ron Paul take a Cabinet position in an Obama-Edwards administration.

interesting

interesting

Ron has delivered too many

Ron has delivered too many babies to not be pro life, himself, as he knows he is treating TWO patients with a pregnant woman. The MAIN thing he is saying, though is that the FEDERAL government has no right to law nor outlaw abortion. He can have his personal beliefs about it, but NEVER would agree to the right of the Feds to make laws about it. Most here need to read his new book to understand his principles in more than just a few minutes of sound bytes. You may (possibly) not agree with everything, when you understand it, but I bet all of you would see that his Presidency would be a God-send for America and her Freedom. Too bad the Powers that want to derail our Constitution derailed him from that goal. Still he hopefully will continue to wake people up to the realities of what is going on in this country today...

I like Ron Paul's views on

I like Ron Paul's views on Foreign Policy, appreciate his candor in addressing Washington cronyism, and am a bit startled by his general economic policies. Nonetheless, I do hope that this policy fight extends its conscience beyond what is simply best for the Republican Party.

Ron Paul opposes the drug

Ron Paul opposes the drug war. It is an illegal, unconstitutional war in the first place, but he has also pointed out its horrendous effects on minority communities. Calling someone a racist is one of the worst put-downs of our time. It distresses me that people do this to dismiss someone with the most substantively responsive platform to the infamy of our being the nation with the highest incarceration rate on the planet. We are hamstrung with laws that are so complicated that applying them without discrimination is impossible. Poor folks of all colors suffer from this.

A few issues may be O.K.,

A few issues may be O.K., but economic conservatism has never worked. Un-regulated stock markets, banks, and monopolies fail; greed is too tempting, and people are squeezed out of participating in the "free market." Communism doesn't work either. What is Ron Paul's healthcare plan? Probably none, or worse. We'll have those health-savings plans which serve all the healthy people while medical insurance companies are too strapped to serve the sick. It's important to hear news about all that is going on, but there isn't a reason to trust any conservative.

Ron Paul is the only

Ron Paul is the only politician who can make a credible attempt of saving the USA. Which is why he will never be elected President or be allowed anywhere close to a position of power.

Ron Paul will NOT start WW

Ron Paul will NOT start WW 111 !!! I'm still with ya Ron....Lead us to Victory and our United States back where it belongs...With the PEOPLE!!

Here's a quote from Ron Paul

Here's a quote from Ron Paul regarding "pro-life" from Feb 2008. . The Fed shouldn't intervene in people's life, but by making a constitutional amendment (or is it an Act?) about life starts at conception creates Federal control doesn't it. Also, it certainly makes it political not just scientific. Don't we have enough people crowding out this earth already. I have a Bill in congress I certainly would promote and push as president, called the Sanctity of Life Amendment. We establish the principle that life begins at conception. And someone says, 'oh why are you saying that?' and I say, 'well, that's not a political statement -- that's a scientific statement that I'm making!" If its scientific only, publish it in the science journals not in the political ones!

Ron Paul has struck a chord

Ron Paul has struck a chord with me. I feel that God could not have abandoned us to such corruption without hope. I bless his every breath because he is well positioned and well intentions and has the love and confidence of many many Americans backing him up

Thanks for this great

Thanks for this great interview. My understanding is that Mr. Pitt and Truthout.org in general takes the stance that the Bush administration has exploited 9/11 in order to occupy the Middle East. However, Truthout.org makes no mention whatsoever of the growing 9/11 Truth movement and the growing number of scholars and engineers who have spoken out against the "official story" of the 9/11 Commission. All of that said, one can’t ignore Ron Paul’s words toward the end of this interview: “..I’m very fearful that something’s going to happen. There’ll be some incident that will galvanize the American people and there will be some Americans killed… some accident will happen or it will be contrived…” He may as well have used the words “false flag”. This isn’t tin-foil hat stuff anymore folks. Somewhere underneath this murkiness there are some profound, earth-shattering TRUTHs that need to come OUT.

Just because the guy might

Just because the guy might be right on SOME issues doesn't make him qualified to be President. Yeah, we *really* need to get rid of the Dept. of Education, Health, Safety, etc.... Paul's right on some issues, but 500% wrong on others.

When you look at who thinks

When you look at who thinks Ron Paul is the answer and who thinks he is not, there is a simple contrast. The people that are on the take in some way, via compensation from the government is some way, shape, or form think he is crazy. But, would the same people support someone that wants to kill Robinhood? No, government is the meal ticket. However, Robinhood was still a thief and can never stop stealing. He starts by stealing your money and ends with stealing your freedom. Look beyond yourself and understand that the leaders of tomorrow will have to stop the welfare state or the state will take all from everyone. Ron Paul's message is the key to understanding your future. Like it or not!

I agree with Deborah above.

I agree with Deborah above. Whatever reasons for Paul's pro-life positions - political, scientific, federalist, etc... - the choice is the woman's. Period. I demand the liberty to do what I will with my reproductive system, what goes into it, and what comes out of it. I don't care how many babies he's brought into this world...women have brought in more! I like Paul. Always have. He's a breath of fresh air when it comes to reigning in big govt. waste and demanding accountability. His foreign policy is wonderful. What he says about the "War on Drugs" is common sense. He's one of the only true "conservatives". I certainly don't agree with everything he says - but he belongs in our administration in some capacity. However, I will vote Obama. He's got more of a chance, and he too is a breath of fresh air. Unless Bill Mahar and Ron Paul get on the ticket together...then I might have to rethink my choice!

The allure of Ron Paul

The allure of Ron Paul appeals to the basest of instincts. No taxes, no war, no government, etc.. Pitts interview starts with the Paul position of defending the constitution; yet Paul (as well as Huckabee) continued to get away with slights toward the rights of individuals, as well as the the rights of anyone who is not your typical WASP. The press (including truthout) regularly ignore Paul's swipes at the 14th amendment, and has pressed "States Rights" in order cause confrontation with the supreme court, suggesting that we would be better off with the original 7 articles, and nullifying any subsequent amendments. I am not Caucasion. My mother was born in a trust territory that eventually became a state. None of my ancestors arrived to this country through Ellis Island. And yet when I voice concerns of bigotry to all of my "Paultard" friends - and I have many - I am always met with blank stares. After all, they are all white, too. A handful of the women supporters I know eventually snapped out of it when I YouTubed many of his rants on a constitutional ban on abortion, and played and posted them ad nauseam. Ron Paul may make some good points, but as I remind many of my friends, Adolf Hitler was a dog loving Vegetarian. I will always support a constitution and a government that protects me from such fanatics.

Paul has said that

Paul has said that scientific declaration of when the thing inside a woman is a HUMAN LIFE, is all that is needed. Once that 'thing' is human, then killing it is murder. Is the 'thing' not human until the cord is cut? Murder is already illegal. And therefore if 'it' is in fact a baby inside the woman, a human baby, then killing it is illegal. However, arguments are recognized that there are further definitions required, and libertarians know this. 1) is the human dependent. and if so, do the caretakers have the responsibility to maintain life 2) if they cannot afford, or do not want to maintain life, do they have a responsibility to seek someone who can or will or 3) if the caretakers simply want to end the hassle, do they have the right - do they own that life. Reducing the argument of abortion - killing a thing, or killing a human - to "choice" is a very simplistic and evading phraseology. More disturbing, is someone who places what they call 'choice' as the qualifier for who they choose as president. Fighting for new laws, for or against, is still simply fighting for new laws.
