Congressman Dennis Kucinich introduced a new article of impeachment against President Bush in the House last Thursday. In a single, pointed resolution, he charged the president with lying to Congress about the presence of weapons of mass destruction (WMDs) in Iraq, in order to obtain permission for a US attack.

In the hour before Kucinich brought his resolution to the floor, he sat down with Truthout for an interview.
We discussed the politics of justice, the quest for peace and the rationale for holding the administration accountable for its decisions on Iraq.

"The case for war was based on fraud," he said. "That's the core charge in this impeachment resolution. And it just takes one article to be able to force the administration and the president to the consequences of their deceit."

Part 1

Part 2

No one said impeachment would be an easy fight. House leadership has repeatedly stated its distaste for the idea, and even some progressive Congress members have shied away from taking such a forceful stand against the president, late in his last term. But Kucinich isn't big on easy fights: He is fond of quoting Spanish philosopher Miguel De Unamuno, who said, "Only he who attempts the absurd is capable of achieving the impossible."

Kucinich may be making some headway on the "impossible," this time around. The morning of our interview, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who had previously dismissed impeachment as "off the table," told reporters that Kucinich's resolution may well reach the Judiciary Committee for a hearing.

Even if impeachment is ultimately achieved, it's doubtful that the congressman will sit tight for long. Kucinich's pesky habit of dreaming big extends beyond impeachment. In our interview, he elaborated on one of his most broad-ranging dreams: the establishment of a federal Department of Peace, the scope of which would range from developing diplomatic solutions to tough international conflicts, to preventing domestic violence, to providing support for peer mediation in schools.

Envisioning a shift from fear and defensiveness to peaceful cooperation, Kucinich points to the US's historical ideals of liberty and democracy - as delineated by the Constitution - as models for moving into the future.

"9/11, as a metaphor, has plunged this country into a very fear-based approach to policy," he said. "But that's not really who we are ... The Department of Peace is aimed at reestablishing peace as a central theme in our society."

The congressman emphasizes that he is not deterred by the rampant, unceasing violence currently wracking our country and our world. Rather, he quotes Ralph Waldo Emerson, saying, "Every jet of chaos which threatens to exterminate us is convertible by intellect into a wholesome force."

I was moved to tears by the

I was moved to tears by the end of the 2nd video. Rep. Kuchinch would really be an asset to our cause at www.VoteWorldGovernment.org - a bottom up democracy movement that has lofty yet practical ideals - such as the abolition of wars between nations, the restoration of our mother earth and her polluted resources, and the replacement of competition to cooperation in the hearts and minds of the living planet. BRAVO!

Here's the quote: "It is

Here's the quote: "It is from numberless diverse acts of courage and belief that human history is shaped. Each time a man stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope, and crossing each other from a million different centers of energy and daring those ripples build a current which can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance." here's the speech: http://www.rfksa.org/speeches/speech.php?id=1

Dennis Kucinich has always

Dennis Kucinich has always been the Best, but this is his BEST yet! He Represents in this interview for us, both things that right now this country needs most; though each one is holographic in scope and therefore, Representative of All. This is the finest Being in our time who has lent himself to Serve in the political arena, and this is what scares so many, because it IS Real. Too many are too afraid that, once face to face with all that most people were taught of what Good IS, such as taught by Christ, Buddha, Mohammed, Krishna, / Ghandi, MLK, RFK----> -that these many human beings feel they cannot live up to it, cannot actualize such qualities in themselves, so they go for the first charismatic character who promises to do it for them instead. They are still as yet vulnerable then, to predators. Peace, as Dennis kucinich presents, based in the Principle of Peace, is won by actively going about the business of attaining it, with each bit that we attain going directly into the Service of Peace. Through the Culture of Peace, Unity is gradually realized and the hologram is enriched throughout. Peace is healing, but to sustain health, to sustain Peace, poisons must first be purged. Impeachment lies on the road to peace, (think of it, don't you FEEL the Peace there?) and through both of these wholistic attainments, all the good we need and will allow, and more if we WILL, becomes free to BE. Right away, for instance, we would quickly be making oil obsolete. That is no "wishful" thought, it IS a living reality that is possible as soon as the poisonous little bigoilmen are purged from stifling it, because it is ready to go right now. Actually, it HAS been ready for you to use for quite some time, you simply have not been allowed by the predators the freedom to do so! Without our collective purging through impeachment, any peace (and reestablishment of our freedom with it) that we might gain could only be fleeting. Unpurged, the cancerous predatory nature would be left free to regroup and recur, and through the creeping effluviant smog seeping out from its re-emerging predation, people would again become addictively intoxicated in these vapors, again stymied and bewildered. In this soul numbing fog the senses are hungrily absorbed in substituted self indulgences and still fail to recognize their own fulfilling good when it is trying to reach them, defaming it for standing in front of them with all the good it is offering. Dennis isn't looking for praise and glorification, he is compelling those who speak of good to STAND With him to purge the predators from our body politic and public mind, thus gaining and empowering the freedom to Stand as he is, cocreating and establishing a Culture of Peace that will lift humanity above the reach of predation. There is no time to lose, so Please Let us BE fellow humans Being that Culture of Peace that IS Rising UP NOW en masse and making this Stand!

Would somebody post that

Would somebody post that ending quote, please? It was so beautiful! To those of you who refuse to watch the video and insist upon written format: I almost FEEL the same way, having never had a TV and knowing what I do about the abuse of such in this country, but divorce yourself from that and realize it's a 3D world and the video shows you not only what he says but how he feels, gestures, etc. It's as close to real life as Internet can get, and isn't real life the point? One may fear the loss of the written word for the gain of TV soundbites, but don't blame the messenger for the message! I push myself to get over my squeamishness of TV and watch the important, moving, and informative videos that Truthout creates. If you doubt the power of video, go to youtube and watch some of Obama's speeches. They are transfixing.

Thank you for posting this

Thank you for posting this interview. Dennis Kucinich is one of the most courageous individuals of our time.n I hope his vision will one day be our reality. Those of you who agree, please, let's get to work.

This goes on and on and on.

This goes on and on and on. Kucinich is wonderful. I agree. But Kucinich is not going to succeed in impeaching Bush. Kucinic will never be the president of this country. Kucinich functions as a kind of moral placeholder for our most fervent wishes. That's it. Meanwhile, the left is cocooned up again in a dreamy circle-jerk, unable to support a viable candidate, and wistfully asking one another, "Why in the world doesn't everyone see that this man should be successful?" Is that really a question that anyone beyond adolescence needs to ask? Because the majority of americans won't vote for him. Period. I would, but it's not an option that can be responsibly exercised at the moment. Maybe someday. Who knows? Meanwhile, look at all of this... one might as well write in the Dalai Lama. I'm an old lefty and the difficulty here has always been "purity"-induced marginalization. A refusal to work within any realistic framework is about individual ego, not real change. It's a self-congratulatory and altogether ineffective bubble. Let's put our backs to a wheel that can actually roll, even if it rolls a little crooked and only in the right general direction. That would be Obama. A real increment beats an impotent symbolic gesture in the real world.

This guy has me spellbound

This guy has me spellbound every single time i hear him speak. An actual politician with a mouth connected to his heart, and a nation without ears.

The US is on a tipping

The US is on a tipping point. Angryrat's observations about the CIA's (actually the Executive's) dirty wars and support of dictators are right on. The criminal Bushies have actually removed the rock all this was hiding under. We are now discussing torture and justifying it instead of denying its existence. If this doesn't sicken the people of this country to the point of action, nothing will. There is a short "window" (sorry for the cliché) of opportunity that's now open. Bush, Cheney, and the other criminals should be impeached now and prosecuted later for their heinous crimes.

Kucinich has been on the

Kucinich has been on the campaign trail before and wasn't elected. The US citizenry is far too stupid to recognize the real deal when it sees it. "Politics is too important to be left to politicians," I've heard said. Seems true. The Legislature has been bought and paid for by the corporate lobby. The Supremes are irrelevant and the Executive is a criminal fraud. Face it — the US is f**ked. And well it is, too. This country has been involved in too much mischief over the past 60+ years and it's about time it faded away. Perhaps into 50 little independent States.

Thank you, ewp. What I wish

Thank you, ewp. What I wish to articulate with my question is maybe what I already know is the dismal answer to it: that the reason for any support of impeachment would fail at its root because both sides of the aisle--though they are sworn to uphold the Constitution--perhaps don't really see themselves as public servants, but as careerists. We can't entrust the running of a democracy to a Congress that is so fearful of rejection by one another. We need to give the entire Congress reason to fear we , the people. The best suggestion I have read recently is by Garret Keizer: A general strike.

Dennis Kucinich is and has

Dennis Kucinich is and has always been the real deal. He follows in the rich non violent tradition of Mahatma Gandhi, no less. Gandhi would be proud of him, no doubt, but Mr. Kucinich's message in today's America is very, very significant for its single minded calmness and solidity of purpose - something most other politicians never even get a sniff of.

Dear American

Dear American Psychologist....if you post your e-mail I'll send you a note. Your equally concerned Canadian Psychologist.

You are the one ! May

You are the one ! May your soul be strong as your course is true I for one am voting FOR YOU !

In answer to KM ("What I

In answer to KM ("What I don't see anyone) addressing, ....why people are so afraid or turned off or otherwise discount" what Kucinich is saying. As regards impeachment, I think 1) many in the Congress are very squeamish about going there because of the fairly recent Clinton impeachment debacle and 2) that the leadership (Pelosi), up to now anyway, believes it would be impossible to get a biparisan agreement to begin proceedings such as we had at the time of Nixon.

Would that we had a Dennis

Would that we had a Dennis Kucinich in Canada! He articulates better than any politician I've heard the principles and behavior of a culture of peace at all levels of social organization. With this understanding, a Department of Peace can be a powerful vehicle for promoting peace-ful ways of living, within and among societies. Without a Kucinich though, a DOP in the hands of our current federal government is more likely to resemble the Ministry of Peace in George Orwell's “1984”, which conducts war as its modus operandi, requires a well-defined enemy, and delivers constant homeland propaganda about how hateful and dangerous the enemy is and how well the war is going.

Amen, km. and Alas, as well.

Amen, km. and Alas, as well.

these people (dennis

these people (dennis kucinich for example) will never have any real power, it's too dangerous for stability of your society which is fundamentally based on war economy (military-industrial-congress). but world change depends on american voters so you must try. your empire is now too strong for significant world change against the will of your leaders - true rulers of the world. question is: who are your true leaders? boys'n'girls from oil companies or banks? i'm sorry for that. you all should study history of your country and history of the last century and its war conflicts and how it all started again and again just because of american strategic needs. you all should go to vote next time and vote for change - just to try and to do something! vote for nader or kucinich or at least ron paul. well, why not vote for noam chomsky? i have a friend from u.s. who lives in europe. first time when i met him he voted for nader, four years later he was so disappointed he didn't vote - it's road to hell. peace 'n love to all good americans! and sorry for my english.

Kuninich is a total

Kuninich is a total idealist living on a cloud of reformist dreams, but still, his move to pave the way for impeachment hearings on the Bush administration is brave. A bit late considering all the political, social and military tragedy that happened in the past years, but Bush has to be forced out of his office before the end of his term, or it's gonna validate all the mess and despotism he has made under his regime. His presidency was kind of a monumental insult to the Constitution and the USA at large, and if he just ends his terms by-the-book, that's gonna be one final nail in the coffin of the democratic republic of the USA.

Kucinich is right, but

Kucinich is right, but impeachment should not be the goal. Rather Bush, Cheney, et al should be prosecuted in a criminal court for murder and other provable crimes. Impeachment gets them out of office when they're almost out anyway. Indictment and prosecution gets them in jail, where they belong.

What I don't see anyone

What I don't see anyone addressing, and although I sometimes think I know the answer, I'd appreciate anyone of the fine commentators here to say why people are so afraid or turned off or otherwise discount this soulful and brilliant man.--Today a friend said that Dennis realizes he can't be prophet and king at the same time, so he has assumed the noble role of prophet, where he has a chance of redeeming us. That was a great observation. But what I still don't understand is why we don't want to be redeemed? Doesn't everyone feel awful, out of harmony, in more pain that is normal for human existence?

There is more lasting power

There is more lasting power in what Dennis Kucinich has come forward to do than we can really have any idea. Mark my words. The strength of this truth no doubt reverberates throughout the globe in ways we just simply cannot fathom right now. This evil among us HAS to be named. Officially and out in public by someone who has the right to do it in the way that Dennis has chosen to do this. A ball is rolling and even if it is not impeachment per se, there is definitely a rolling ball...

When I hear the speech of

When I hear the speech of RFK regarding violence and the need for compassion, I get goosebumps. Imagine how close we came to electing a man with such thoughts and the courage to say it out loud. Dennis Kucinch reminds me of that ideal. Conjuring up the image of the America and Americans I want believe in. Who needs a 3rd party when Kucinch is on the ticket?

"Change starts within" -I

"Change starts within" -I think the earth just moved. Did I just hear a politician speaking a fundamental truth? Could it be, THERE's true leadership - turning people back to the source of power? Not making them dependent on advertising to think? Peace starts with our own insides. Pointing people back there, to clean up our own stuff even as we look to the world, is true wisdom. Imagine! hearing a politician say this... blows me away.

If the major TV and other

If the major TV and other news media wanted to get a huge response (buzz) from their viewers, they would broadcast this interview. It would evoke tremendous interest, both in controversy and in inspiration and relief. Is there ever anything shown with such hope and comforting reason anymore? Even on PBS, it is an increasing rarity. Remember how people used to sit and listen, rapt, to JFK. I have read that Lincoln naturally commanded singular focus during his talks. Teddy was the same. It's not how the media paint a man or woman, it's what's at the heart of their message, what's in their heart, that attracts and moves listeners. And this is how it should be. This man should be given an opportunity to speak on the same bully pulpit such willful destroyers as George Bush and Dick Cheney have received from our duplicitous public media.

i'm still voting for this

i'm still voting for this guy. it was great to hear him talk about the dept. of peace. always heard about it---didn't know it was so extensive and involved in society. thought it was just like a building in DC that advised the pentagon not to do stupid stuff, probably with little result. thanks for this video.

It was extremely important

It was extremely important historically, (despite Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi taking impeachment off the table) that Congressman Dennis Kucinich wrote articles of impeachment against both Bush and Cheney. Historians will always look back in amazement at this very dark administration and question why Congress did not act and impeach both Bush and Cheney. Now, Congressman Kucinich will have left a trail of the high crimes and misdemeanors that should have been followed through by the rest of Congress. Today, Congress' approval rating was 9%, which speaks volumes . . .

Hurrah for Kucinich! It's

Hurrah for Kucinich! It's likely nothing will come of the impeachment process -- but he has the courage to stand up and ask for it! Good for him! I wish he would be impeached -- he deserves it more than any who have faced impeachment before. I can't figure out why we haven't been marching in the streets for the past 7 plus years????!!

Kucinich better than Obama.

Kucinich better than Obama. I've met Dennis. He's the only politician of either party who has consistently had the guts to tell the truth and advocate a real democracy based on peace, justice and ecology. It is a sad commentary that the Dems go for Obama, who is anything but progressive. And that the Dems don't aggressively move to impeach Bush/Cheney, to take those two war criminals down the same way the Repubs tried to destroy Clinton because he had consensual sex. Kucinich is a great guy and he should be president, not McCain, not Obama, and certainly not Bush.

Dennis should still be

Dennis should still be running for Prez. At least he defends & upholds the Constitution. Any chance we can draft him?

Gee, it's teevee, not a

Gee, it's teevee, not a written interview. I would have liked to read this "interview."

i voted for dennis kucinich

i voted for dennis kucinich in our michigan primary and was subsequently scorned by karl rove. i take that as a sign that all of us who voted for him were on the right course. thankyou dennis for continuuing to speak for us.

DENNIS ROCKS!! what else can

DENNIS ROCKS!!

what else can you say, except maybe-

DENNIS & FEINGOLD! or FEINGOLD & DENNIS!

if the Dems would run that ticket, I'd be back in a heartbeat!

but they aren't gonna run that ticket :(

they won't even run Hillary/Edwards :(

so I'm voting for Cynthia this fall. She's the only democrat left running.

A genuine man with genuinely

A genuine man with genuinely good ideas--it's quite refreshing. I hope with all of my heart that Bush gets impeached. His recent use of the executive privilege sickened me beyond belief. Keep it up, truthout. Maya Schenwar is doing a great job!

Rep Kucinich is one of a

Rep Kucinich is one of a kind. Why can't people see his good? Is it just greed or the warmth of the quicksand up to our necks. God Bless him.

What goes on in the White House

Until the Republican convention, we don't know whether Dick Cheney will be nominated for the third time (in which case he would likely lose a third election and assume office for a third term). It is important to expose the corrupt, self-serving basis of Cheney-Bush policies and their disastrous effects.

Truthout's preview of this article indicated that the interview covered Kucinich's "vision for a route to lasting peace and unity". Yet the word "unity" is absent from the article. If we have to sacrifice unity to obtain peace and justice, won't we still be better off?

Dear deeply moved Canadian

Dear deeply moved Canadian psychologist: I am, too. How can we talk? American psychologist

@Michael, superb comment!

@Michael, superb comment! And a big gracious THANK YOU to Dr. K!!! (hey, if ya got the medicine we need, your a doctor in my book)

I've often thought about why

I've often thought about why the military is so mainstream and well-funded while the Peace Corps is something for lunatic fringe idealists. I love the idea of the Department of Peace and it's many facets. I'm more in favor of that than the impeachment, which, although deserved, moves us more toward past mistakes than future growth. Kudos, DK!

At last! To hear Kucinich

At last! To hear Kucinich talk about the establishment of a Department of Peace, of strength through peace is like a dream come true. May his courage and inspiration be contagious.

How inspiring and refreshing

How inspiring and refreshing to know that there is a genuinely courageous man of good character, integrity and vision to guide US at this critical moment in history. A man with a genuine, authentic appreciation of our guiding values, inheritance and birthright. I salute Mr. Kucinich! I want you to know that as I work to create peace and harmony in my own heart and mind, I am with you, I am for you! May all the power of the most high, and all the superior realms, all the gods, all the ascended masters, and all that is just and trustworthy in the human soul, bless and keep you. Your sublime and golden armor is shinning, your flaming sword is flashing with undeniable dignity and beauty of truth. Your cause is just and true. Triumph and Victory is yours! You lead and I will follow.

It is awe-inspiring to

It is awe-inspiring to witness the words of people who gather around Congressman Kucinich. His intention of strength through peace brings out the best in people, and the best of people. If his words should make one cringe as unrealistic or sappy, realize it is you who have been misled into a fearful state of mind, and not "our nation", or "all free people". Ask yourself, and then answer, this question: is the world my friend, or my enemy? There is no splitting hairs, no qualifications, no half measures. Whether you are informed by science or religion, this is true: there is one world, and we are one people (I think Carl Sagan deserves credit for that). Your answer in no way relieves you from your responsibility to take care of yourself and those around you. It is about awareness of who you are, and where you are. But it is quite different, in some ways opposite, from what we have been led to believe from our President. He would have us believe it is he who is keeping us safe, that the world is our enemy and we must take what we need for ourselves, if we can, and everyone else can pound sand. Words such as "our interests", "national security", "here at home", "our borders" all seek to divide that which is one thing. How can America prosper without cooperation from everyone else? We cannot, and will not. The immigration issue is a good example. Some think illegal immigrants hurt America and lower our quality of life. Some think they do the jobs Americans don't want to do and so are valuable. Both are half-true, but only because there is an artificial division imposed by our government that separates us. Be honest now, you learned in school about borders, and different cultures, and fear of different cultures. Furthermore, the division is egregious enough that people die, people are put in jail, and hate and fear run rampant, when the only thing that's happening is that people are trying to survive. Nevermind the minutiae of how we all live together happily. First you have to believe in the ideathat we are all in this together, and then put your thought into action (no pressure...). Only then can it happen. Impeachment of President Bush may be a small, but necessary, action in Rep. Kucinich's action plan, but he is also it's strongest voice in Congress.

I completely support and

I completely support and favor Kucin ich, and still thing he would have been better then the current candidate. I'd like ot know what he says in this interview but don't want to waste time watching talking heads - is there a tranascript available? Some of us do not watch TV but prefer reading...

Kucinich is my HERO!!!!

Kucinich is my HERO!!!!

Peace was never a central

Peace was never a central theme in US foreign policy. Just take a look at the CIA's dirty laundry, at the little wars the US participated, either as a supporter of one side, or as an active military force. All the coups, assassinations, death squads, all the dictators it supported... What Bush does is simply a more open continuation of this policy. They realized they don't have to work with the whole cloak-and-dagger routine, and became bold. God save our souls.

I greatly admire Rep.

I greatly admire Rep. Kuchinch and how he will succeed with his endeavors. Erik is right about the Rep. he is courageous, obstinate and good. I would like to believe there are many others in office that are as good as he is, but we never hear about them. If they ever clone humans I would love to see it done with the good congressman.

I am deeply moved by

I am deeply moved by Kucinich's profound sense of what democracy is and inspired by his courage to challenge the beast in the form of his impeachment articles. I am a Canadian psychologist and artist who, along with many others, believes that the psy-ops (psychological operations) have generated a mass psychosis in the U.S. which has allowed the current administration to undo democracy and to replace it with a hostile and terrorist dictatorship. May all the collective power of the human heart and soul be with Dennis Kucinich and all others who will restore justice and democracy in the once great nation of the United States for the security and peace that all humanity aspires to.

It is an unlikely wonder

It is an unlikely wonder that there are people like Rep. Kucinich, courageous and obstinate and good at the same time, and in Congress. Indeed many times since 9/11 one wondered how the US may have reacted otherwise, for instance a massive 100 billion dollar global peace and aid initiative abroad, and 100 billion at home for health care and infrastructure and another 100 billion for renewable energy and energy conservation. All that would have built on the good will the world manifested towards America after 9/11, would have helped development in Africa and the middle-east, therefore helping population growth slow down, we'd be polluting less AND paying less for gas. We'd be respected and probably liked by most people. We'd be an example to follow. Instead we are losing respect, we are not an act to follow, we have shown foreign dictators that it is OK to torture, to rig elections, to waste, to invade other countries... Indeed Bush & Co are a catastrophe and really the most anti-American of all. That we have let ourselves be manipulated by them is not saying much good about the country; that Kucinich is a congressman helps save face.

Last evening I watched the

Last evening I watched the fairly sympathetic treatment of the Nixon presidency, in the film by Oliver Stone.A smart man who achieved a lot in national and international affairs, Nixon was brought down by his hubris. The lies alone of the current president should be sufficient to impeach him or lead him to resignation. He will leave behind him the legacy of the unforgivable and murderous war, a wrecked country - Iraq - a domestic economy in shambles, American loss of prestige and authority, in short nothing noble or constructive, His departure in disgrace would be a cleansing act of the mind and soul of the greatest democracy on earth.
