Is It Really About "You" the American People or Just About Hillary?

As Senator Clinton launched her bid for the Democratic presidential nomination, her campaign slogan was "Let the Conversation Begin." Then she went to "Big Challenges, Real Solutions: Time to Pick a President." At one point, it was "Renewing the Promise of America." Then, she was "In to Win." Finally, she settled on "Working for Change, Working for You."

In the weeks leading up to the end of the Democratic primary process, it became clearer and clearer Senator Clinton would not be able to amass the committed or super delegates needed to secure her party's nomination. Even though she was mathematically unable to secure her party's nomination, she was not willing to step aside, admit defeat and begin the healing process within the Democratic Party? She had plenty of time to prepare herself and her supporters for the inevitable. Contrary to her campaign slogan, she was not really working for "you" the American people, she was working for Hillary.

On May 23, 2008, CNN reported several close friends and supporters of Senator Clinton said that they were seeking a "graceful exit strategy" for Clinton from the race for the Democratic nomination, possibly as part of a joint ticket for the White House. Well, Senator Clinton, in my opinion, the best strategy for a graceful exit is to just exit gracefully.

If this was really about "you" the American people and not all about Hillary, in her New York speech on June 3, she would have looked her supporters in the eye, acknowledged they fought the good fight, gave it the "old college try," but were not successful. She should have given Senator Obama his moment, relished with him in the historic moment and graciously acknowledged defeat. She would then have been able to stand with her head held high and call for her supporters to join with her and support the presumptive Democratic nominee, Senator Barack Obama. There in lies her "graceful exit."

Instead, her close friends and supporters have developed three scenarios they believe will influence whether or how the two teams merge. The first scenario is if Senator Obama ignores Senator Clinton and her supporters and makes the vice presidential offer to someone else. According to CNN, one insider said, "This would be a total dismissal of her and totally unacceptable."

The problem with this logic is it implies that Senator Clinton is entitled to being offered the vice presidential place on the ticket, and she is not. It also implies that the loser gets to dictate the terms of the loss. Lest we forget, "to the victor go the spoils."

According to The Associated Press, Senator Clinton told colleagues she would consider joining Barack Obama as his running mate, and advisers said she was withholding a formal departure from the race partly to use her remaining leverage to press for a spot on the ticket. How can she consider an option that has not yet been presented?

The second scenario they foresaw was for Senator Obama to publicly offer Senator Clinton the vice presidential spot, with the understanding that she would turn it down. But several Clinton friends say, "the problem is, the two sides do not trust each other" to follow through on this.

Why would Senator Obama put himself in that precarious position? What does he gain? Again, implicit in this logic is a sense of entitlement and mainstream media is playing right along with it. Very few if any of the pundits and commentators are calling this crazy. Jeffrey Toobin is one of the few who honestly called this "deranged narcissism".

According to CNN, the third scenario they envisioned would be trying to get both the candidates to sit down face to face and work out an agreement suitable to both parties. Some Clinton insiders said that some points to consider would be how to help pay off the Clinton campaign debt - roughly $30 million - or whether he would offer support for a possible Clinton effort to become Senate majority leader.

Of the three scenarios proposed, the third one makes the most sense, almost. By the Obama campaign and the DNC agreeing to help pay off the Clinton campaign debt they could buy her allegiance. They could tie the payment to the second scenario by offering Senator Clinton the VP slot, if she does not reject it, she does not get paid. But again, why would Senator Obama allow himself to be compromised in this manner?

The discussion of Senator Clinton being made Senate majority leader would involve the current Senator majority leader, Harry Reid, stepping aside. Why would Senator Reid allow himself to be compromised in that manner?

Here's a major part of the problem: Senator Clinton and her advisers, such as Terry McAuliffe and Mark Penn, and too many of her supporters and friends became too comfortable too early. They believed all of their own press clippings from late in 2007 about Senator Clinton's insurmountable $35 million war chest, her committed super delegates, and the Clinton cachet. She was running as an incumbent for an office she did not hold.

Here they are in June 2008, without the delegates to secure the nomination, and they cannot accept the fact they were out-strategized, out-organized, and out-fundraised. Penn, McAuliffe, and other strategists were figuring that the nomination would be locked up in early February, and they ran a general election campaign during the primary process. They focused on the larger states with the most delegates and ignored the causes. Senator Obama, on the other hand, used "Chicago style" precinct by precinct politics and contested every contest, every vote and every voter.

Senator Clinton is quoted as saying, "A lot of people are asking, 'What does Hillary want?' ... "I want what I have always fought for: I want the nearly 18 million people who voted for me to be respected and heard." Really?

Of all of the issues and scenario's proposed, not one of them involves policy. If Senator Clinton were leveraging her exit to compel Senator Obama to accept her position on health care, social security reform, an Iraq exit strategy, or some other important public policy position, then we could believe she is fighting for her people to be heard. We could believe it's about "you" the American people. None of that appears to be at play here. It all seems to be about Hillary and allowing her to save face.

The "grace" in graceful is not something others give you; it is something that you earn. Grace is earned through humility, not from a sense of entitlement. The longer Senator Clinton tries to make her graceful exit the obligation of others, the more difficult it will become to exit gracefully.

Sounds to me like the writer

Sounds to me like the writer is a typical Republican shill fantasizing about yet another Clinton conspiracy .....for what I don't know. I believe that Clinton is a sincere public servant who really believes she has the right vision for America's future. I wouldn't vote for her because of her views on Iraq. But that is not to say her intentions are despicable and dishonest as everyone says or implies. Clinton has not demanded the VP slot yet she has been lambasted thoroughly for it. And naturally her supporters would like to see it. It is also strange to me that everyone, Repubs & Dems alike, referred to her (disrepectfully) as Hillary, her first name, rather than her last name. This is unprecedented in a Presidential campaign. One wonders if it might not have undermined her campaign enough for Obama's razor-thin victory. As usual the stupid Democrats are self-destructing, the implication, I guess, being that Clinton supporters are going to vote for McCain.

It took her 4 days to find a

It took her 4 days to find a black pantsuit and get some needed grace training. Even so, it was still mainly about Hillary and her 18 mil power. What will we bash without Hillary the Liar , and yes, it WAS about her policies, her war vote and corporatism. The whole Bill fatigue is part of our need for change. At least some of us can hope that Obama will bring our America back for us.

This voyeuristic,

This voyeuristic, speculative, psychobabble about Clinton's motivations is titillating, but it has no journalistic value whatsoever. In fact, it exceeds my absurdity threshold. So she needed a few days to come to grips with the reality. Really--what's the big deal? It's disappointing to see the print media following in the footsteps of 24/7 cable TV networks by filling space and time with much ado about nothing. Where's the unity? Perhaps "unity" is yet another mindless campaign slogan. I've yet to feel the love.

Leave Hillary alone, put

Leave Hillary alone, put your news worthy attention on our nominee, and if you must, pick on the moderators at CNN and MSNBC for all their sexist remarks through out her campaign. I am so over the Hillary bashing.

What's amazing to me is how

What's amazing to me is how the media is still reporting her as having some 19 million supporters that voted for her continuing to support her loyally and unthinkingly, and people in this thread repeat such nonsense. I voted for Hillary early on in the process, as I know many others did, thinking she had the most experience and would do the best job as the next president. But through the race I became appalled and turned off by how poorly her campaign had been managed, her sleazy tactics of becoming a champion of having every vote counted in Michigan and Florida only when it became apparent she would lose otherwise, and her horrible choices of blowhard inner advisers like Penn and McAuliffe that changed my mind. That 19 million the 'media' keep reporting is already a far lesser figure, as recent polls have shown at least 60% ready to support Obama. So it should be more accurately described as some 7 million loyal devotees. How can the media be so slow in being able to connect the dots of simple logic?

what a polarization there is

what a polarization there is in this party?! i am and have been for obama before he announced his candidacy...had hillary gotten the delgates then i would of voted for her. these fair-weathered people who flip-flop on who they are voting for are having some real self-identification issues...so their candidate didn't win and they are now going to vote for mccain? what? are you people stupid or is this an issue all about you? shallow-pathetic-and big whinny babies... even hillary would think your attitudes really pathetic. you don't care about the country, YOU only care about who YOU think is right and who YOU think is wrong... well i want a country that is unified and caring about ALL THE PEOPLE and not ALL ABOUT YOU!! GET OVER IT!!! GET OVER YOURSELF!!

I don't think the

I don't think the Democratic party realizes the damage it has done by not chiding fellow Democrats-- and even more, the press and pundits-- for sexism.  I assume that there were good reasons for not doing so:  many important or influential people did not want to appear to be taking sides in the race for the nomination, or were realistically worried about appearing to be wimps, PC, the Nanny Party, insufficiently tough -- macho Republicans will use anything of this sort as ammunition in the General  Election.   But many of the contemptuous things said and written about Senator Clinton during this campaign were in terms that apply to all women, and imply that women-as-women-- half of humanity-- are neither a legitimate interest group nor welcome in leadership roles.   Every male Democrat who has been part of the public discussion this heated election season needs to go back and look at what he wrote and said and ask himself: "How would my mother, daughter, sister, or wife feel if I had said that about her?"  Because a significant minority of female Democrats feel that they have personally been mortally insulted and expelled from the party that they have always thought of as their home, by men who they used to think were on "their side".   Unless these men "get it", finally, and apologize and promise to speak  respectfully and inclusively in the future, these women are filing for divorce. They won't go self-destructively crazy and give money or go door-to-door for Republicans.  But the flood of misogyny that bubbled up to the surface this spring has turned the party identity toxic for many women whom  the party has traditionally relied upon for support.

Please name a presidential

Please name a presidential candidate who doesn't run for him or her? Come on now, when you condemn Sen Clinton for being for herself, aren't you being ignominious. Who, running for president, doesn't have to have a huge ego? Do you, writer run for president or do you j ust sit back and comment on someone elses run for president.

I'm puzzled by those who

I'm puzzled by those who think there was some conspiracy by the DNC to steal the election from Senator Clinton. What is it about the rules that is not understood? The lack of objectivity and honesty is astounding. How do you agree to one thing, and then change your mind in the middle of the process? How is it that the rules say "delegates" but suddenly we hear about popular vote -- of course discounting the caucus votes. I do not dislike Senator Clinton, but I was surely taken aback by the tactics.

Analyzing the

Analyzing the events/circumstances/strategies/outcomes of the political process is all we're doing folks. Its what we do, merely part of the process. EVERYONE comes under the microscope in this game, whether you believe the big H should be above critisism or not (apparently Pres. Billy Boy does). Try not to take it so personally. If you can't stand the heat...(now how many of you will choose to take that as a sexist reference?) Get a LIFE! Poor Hillary. Last year she was answering questions in interviews with the prologue "When I am president..." You reckon she didn't figure she was already the de facto nominee? American Politics Rule # 1: MAKE NO ASSUMPTIONS I guess now she'll have to give back a substantial portion of the dividends she and Bill have already received in back-room arrangements in anticipation of her becoming Commander in Thief. What a pity! Wake up Hillarites. Why do you think Republicans were voting for her in the primaries at the behest of Rush Limbaugh et al? Why was Bill O'Reilly getting all chummy with her on his dog-and-pony show (God bless rich people, she was heard to say--no fooling!). Perhaps they know something you don't...

Straw men and projection

Straw men and projection abound in these comments about--Dr. Leon's article? Not often. Mostly about how they feel about the candidates and their campaigns in the primary. Time to move on. That goes for Frank Rich, the poster on June 8 who said Dr. Leon was labeled "sexist" (I just re-read every single post and not one person called Dr. Leon "sexist"), and everyone who wishes his or her candidate had been chosen. I wanted Edwards, but I'n on board. Let's make it a fun ride to the White House for all of us.

Hillary Clinton should have

Hillary Clinton should have been the candidate. Why the Democratic party chose the weaker of two candidates is a mystery. Whena baseball team loses a game the manager and the team are critized but if they win they are or appear to be perfect Hillary Clinton has over 1900 delegates,17,000000 people voted for her and everyone is conveniently forgetting that. Those of us supporting Hillary Clinton had a great problem with the tactics of the Obama campaign,The Media and Howard dean and the Democratic National Committee, Believe it or not we reached these conclusions on our own and we will determine on our own if Obama deserves our respect and our vote.

One thing a former pastor

One thing a former pastor taught me is that each of us can only do what we have the grace to do. Since grace is a gift and not earned, the only way we can determine grace is to act on it as if it exists and, generally, we'll see that we have it even if we didn't previously. I believe God has graced Hillary Clinton with the gift of defeat. I don't mean God was working against her anymore than I believe God is FOR the USA and AGAINST Iraq. It is only in defeat that we learn more about who we really are. I believe Hillary will come out of this loss as a stronger person, with an understanding that some of the reason she lost is that she didn't stay true to her own principals in her desire to win. Hillary is a very intelligent and gifted woman; and I don't believe her political life is over. I do believe, though, this loss may make her a better person and senator or whatever the future holds for her.

Moving forward from Hillary

Moving forward from Hillary ... by putting all the divisive attitudes, terms and villifying tactics aside would be a great start. Is it possible to view Dr. Leon's article in a more macro sense - that HRC is merely a reflection of the behavior and attitudes of a significant % of the populous. Is he actually pointing out opportunities that we as a nation have to look honestly at ourselves to make adjustments in our individual and national character?

I would love to hear from

I would love to hear from those of you who are calling Dr. Leon's column "sexist." Can you pull some line/s from the column to give evidence of this claim? If not, then you are embarrassing many of us who, as feminists, would greatly prefer our fellow feminists to use reason and logic when making an argument, and to know a logical fallacy when they type it. I did not agree with everything Dr. Leon said, but I would never label it as sexist, or call it evidence of misogyny, lest I reinforce the primary female stereotype I seek to see eliminated: that females draw conclusions based on emotion rather than logic and facts. Please, find me the evidence! I would love to be wrong about the majority of posts complaining about Truthout's publication of this article! It is possible to disagree without vilifying your opponent.

Hillary missed her

Hillary missed her opportunity on Tuesday night to concede graciously when the votes were finished. Why does she need extra time? Why wait 4 days? Her "sore loser" actions are only reinforcing old stereotypes about women and it is really a shame. Obama won the very first primary votes and never looked back. He never lost his lead since Day 1. The opinion that it was a "very close" race is misleading and focuses only on a comeback story for Hillary, and not on what Obama really did. Obama ran a truly historic, victorious, and brilliant campaign. And we'll all be better off if Hillary and her supporters acknowledge it.

Hillary voted for the war.

Hillary voted for the war. What corrupted feminist/womanist perspective would condone murder (yes, an illegal aggressive war is murder)? I guess a glass-ceiling feminism does - one that looks to industrial and financial corporatism for personal identity and status. Hillary lacks the radical ideas and hopes that could finally bring an end to a malaise in this country that began with Ray-gun. Funny, the 80's began the steady decline of radical feminist autonomy (outside of lesbian rights, amen) and even abortion rights, while making gains in work-place and institutional rights through civil court rulings protecting against "hostile environments" - thereby giving right-wing lunatics the opportunity to co-opt earlier leftist criticisms of "political correctness" The glass-ceiling civil rights movement sacrifices vision for the pragmatism where some get rich while many others remained terribly exploited (e.g., Hillary either supported or was mute about Bill's "welfare reform" which harmed poor women while purportedly helping the boom economy of the 90's, an economy for glass-ceiling putzes which busted leaving things worse for many more women than it helped. Doesn't the constantly increasing pressures on women and families from runaway home prices, loss of jobs, disruption of community, lack of affordable health care - all of which were exacerbated by an economy that opened the door to professional women like never before - not cause Hillary supporters to question the class issues that seemingly divide america and american feminism along race issues as well?_ A woman president? Run Maxine Waters, Lynn Woolsey, or better, Barbara Lee, (anti-war) not Diane Feinstein or Pelosi and I'll contribute, volunteer, and follow. Hey, if Obama picks Hillary, Cynthia McKinney gets my vote, even if I have to write her in.

I am truly surprised that

I am truly surprised that Truthout would include such a venomous editorial. Sen. Clinton did not lose by a landslide, folks. She lost by a very slim margin. She was a worthy opponent for the primary race, and fought the good fight. Her supporters don't easily "get over " it after so much emotional energy spent working on her campaign. When people make comments like "what the voters want" or other demeaning comments suggesting that they are speaking for the entire nation of voters is to deny that this was a VERY close race and could have tipped either way. It reminds me of the 2000 campaign and the "loss" of Al Gore and then the "victors" coming in acting like they had a mandate! I consider a mandate to be somewhere over 75-80% of the electorate in any contest. It wasn't then and it hasn't been that for this primary. Let's quit vilifying Sen. Clinton, let she and her supporters heal a bit and welcome them with open arms into the Democratic Party. You'll recover a lot of them by being a bit less nasty and sarcastic.

Some of you obviously did

Some of you obviously did not read Dr. Leon's article or read it well. Clinton DOES seem to have a sense of entitlement, and she needs to get over it. She and her "republican lite" advisers and consultants of DLC ilk should shut up, step back, and realize that people want a far more progressive thrust in leadership than what Clinton represented.

Yes, you're right...All this

Yes, you're right...All this Hillary bashing better stop. It's not doing Obama one bit of good and it's really pissing off a lot of voters. To the person who told all us "girls" to cool it cause women have been leaders of many other countries around the world -- I say, so what? It's NOT ABOUT BEING A WOMAN VOTING FOR A WOMAN...even though there has been a huge amount of misogyny in this campaign and no one can tell me otherwise. I have eyes and I have ears. I don't need Hillary Clinton's campaign to tell me what has gone on here. I saw it with my own eyes and heard it with my own ears. But I didn't vote for Hillary JUST BECAUSE she is a woman and I deeply resent being told that just because I am a woman, that's why I voted the way I voted. Maybe just because you're a dipshit dreamer with stars in your eyes you voted the way YOU voted. How about that? Let's all just stop categorizing how and why people are voting the way they're voting. I am college educated, have never voted Republican before -- as a matter of fact, voted for Jesse Jackson in the 1988 primaries -- so don't tell me I'm racist. Have I made myself clear? Everybody isn't so easily pigeonholed. There's subtlety and nuance in the world, you know? Everything doesn't have to have an easy explanation. I see her faults and STILL think she's the strongest Democratic candidate this year.

I think Obama supporters

I think Obama supporters should follow Obama's example and be gracious and kind to Sen. Clinton. I don't think she should be VP--it would be too confining for her and too weird for him, plus McCain will be using clips of her criticizing Obama, and that's hard to fight if she's on the ticket. But she is smart and talented and can be of great service to the country in other ways.

All this Hillary bashing

All this Hillary bashing does absolutely nothing to help Obama get elected. You are just pissing off a big chunk of Democratic voters whos votes we need to elect Senator Obama in November.

OK, girls, let's talk woman

OK, girls, let's talk woman to woman. Before you get all emotional about dear Hilary's accomplishments, consider this: As early as 1960, Siramavo Bandaranaike of Ceylon (Sri Lanka) became the world's first woman Prime Minister. Noteworthy that the Far East can boast the first female head of state. In 1966, Indira Gandhi became the first woman Prime Minister of India. Golda Meir became Prime Minister of Israel in 1969. And let's not forget Evita (Maria Estela Peron) heading up Argentina in 1974. Rather than bore you with the many that fall in between, I'll fast forward to Margaret Thatcher. She was the first female Prime Minister of the UK, remember? And she was elected in 1979 - nearly 30 years ago. And how about Benazir Bhutto, the first female Prime Minister of Pakistan and the first female leader of a Muslim country? That was 20 years ago when she was elected. The fact that we're a little behind in the game doesn't justify defense of Hilary's recent behavior. The list of powerful women is long and I venture to guess few of them resorted to Hilary's tactics to maintain psychological control. Let's not follow her lead and pout. We're Democrats after all.

like most men this writer

like most men this writer just doesn't get it. What I don't get is why Hillary gave up her delegates, & why the Dems are insisting on running some bozo who can't take the big states. You need those to win an election That's election 101. Hillary finished the primaries strong, her opponent was sputtering. Are the Dems so afraid to run a woman for Prez that any man will do & they give him some of her delegates to boot? Hillary should hace kept the ones she had. Come convention time the Dems will be stuck with a candidate that will have jumped the shark & she could have provided herself as a viable alternative. Maybe he's already jumped the shark who knows? All I know is Hillary has made it a no brainer for me to support Cynthia McKinney. Yes Ladies, there's another woman running for Prez if you want to back her. Also Edwards/Kucinich supporters, Cynthia is them in drag. Check her out at www.runcynthiarun.org If you are tired of the way women are treated in this country, if you want universal healthcare, if you want a truely comprehensive energy solution, if you want our soldiers home from Iraq like say, yesterday- then Cynthia's your girl. Check her out & let's send the Dems a message this Nov

You are 100% Correct!!! I'm

You are 100% Correct!!! I'm a woman and I'm sick of Hillary being the "it" woman of all time and it when you disagree with her, her followers call it Hillary bashing. Too bad she wasn't gracious enough to make a exit before now. She lost- can't she get that in her head? I think she and Bill need to come down from their thrones-we owe them nothing. Had the tables been turned, you know darn well that Obama would have given a terrific farewell speech - he wouldn't have continue to shine the light on himself. Amen

As a female white woman (of

As a female white woman (of a certain age) I fail to see the sexism towards Hillary. I am tired of being asked to choose between my natural feminism and the larger issues. I have been doing it for years. If disappointed Clinton voters don't see that the issues at stake are the Constitution and the Supreme Court then they are neither feminists (male or female) nor true Democrats. At the rally here in Missoula Obama said that he will "restore the Constitution", that he knows the Constitution and has taught it. "It is not American to lock people up for months and years without charge" It is not constitutional to spy on citizens, open their mail without warrants. That was/is the principal reason I will work for him.

I'm always disappointed when

I'm always disappointed when Truthout prints articles that are blatantly childish, full of hatred and disrespect. Dr. Leon's criticisms of Senator Clinton are clearly projections of his OWN egotism, illogic, mendacity and lack of grace. I thought Senator Clinton and Senator Obama were BOTH eloquent, respectful and appropriate at the end of the primary. It does not serve the citizenry to have sophomoric 'professors' and pundits spin THAT truth into trash. This kind of cynicism is toxic and has to stop if we are to grow as a nation.

Cool it with the

Cool it with the small-souled venom, please. What a nasty, mean-spirited and throughly sexist treatment of Hillary. Come on, TruthOut! Why publish such rot"?

Hillary Clinton was

Hillary Clinton was subjected to the most vicious trash and slime by the carnival clowns that masquerade as journalists in our cyber-age media. Had they gone after Barak Obama with their filth, there would have been an overwhelming public rejection -- racism is now out of bounds, as it well should be. But they and their public think it's just haha-okay to throw video-tantrums about a woman candidate for major office, and to market and display obscene toys and gadgets in a woman candidate's image. Sorry, Americans, we've only progressed halfway from our dark ages.

Senator Clinton is a

Senator Clinton is a strong, extremely intelligent woman. Why should she have given up before now? If she did all the mean-spirited commentors would be jumping up and down shouting in glee that she didn't have what it takes to face the heat of being President. Perseverence under extreme pressure is an asset. This world needs strong women to clean up the sorry mess we are in.

It amazes me that even Dr

It amazes me that even Dr Leon keeps focusing on these personality analyses, thereby missing the 900-pound gorilla in the room, namely: Just who each candidate truly represents! This is most easily described by who their donors are, which directly reflects each candidate's political history. Hillary was front-loaded with primary donations from the deep-pocket, wealthy DC Dem/DLC power elite, including the lobbyists she defended in the debates. Her votes on illegally invading and occupying a sovereign nation that was no direct threat to the US, the bankruptcy bill, and massive donations from big healthcare and phama -- more than any other senator of either party -- clearly delineate who she represents. In direct contrast, Obama has inspired 1.5 million Americans to donate an average of about $91 each. That's ordinary American citizens. He has worked consistently to improve the lives of and empower ordinary Americans consistently since his days as a community organizer for unemployed steelworkers, and finding common ground across the aisle as a state and national legislator. It doesn't get much plainer than this. Clinton has been a champion, not only of her own personal thirst for power, but to maintain the deep-pocket, beltway Dems' control of the Democratic Party. This week, Clinton's faction lost the battle for the Dem Nom. Although We the People have used our power, and it will draw Dems who like democracy as well as Dems who like power, don't think for a minute that the die-hard big money Dems have thrown in the towel in the larger war for control of the Dem Party, OR of the United States of America. Obama will have a huge fight in DC with them as well as with neocons and other Rethugs. He and our other allies can only win for us if we continue our citizen activism. Speaking as a 60-yr-old white woman, the only older white women who can even begin to threaten to vote for McCaint in November are Republicans and "Democrats" who are personally so very comfortable as to not feel themselves nor those they care about are threatened by (1) McCain's determination to deepen the Iraq Occupation and make War on Iran, (2) McCain's determination to deny women contraception as well as abortion for disaster pregnancies,(3) McCain's determination to continue destroying the economic livelihoods of ordinary Americans...ETC.. These "die hards" are a distinct minority in DemWorld. Hillary does not own her 17 million voters. This Obama/Clinton nominating fight is far more historic than just their genders and racial identities. It's about whether We the People will continue to own and operate our democratic America.

It's historic! It's amazing!

It's historic! It's amazing! Why don't you Obama supporters shut up about Hillary and enjoy Obama's victory? I get choked up about the thought of him becoming the first black president. Freud would have a field day with you anti-Hillary ranters. How is it that you know that the things she has done or will do are for self-serving/evil reasons? She's not an evil devouring mommy from a horror film. I admire her and always will. She's an amazing person and electrified a lot of voters.

It seems that there a lot of

It seems that there a lot of Hillary supporters who will be holding some grudge about Michigan. Do they not understand that this is truly stupid? The original Michigan election was not a valid election by any way you look at it. Since Hillary was the only one on the ballot, and many democrats did not vote, or voted in the republican primary, the whole process was rendered null and void. The Michigan Democratic party went through a process (probably including polls) to try and determine a representative split, as if it were a make-up election in May. One is only left to question the intelligence of those who complain about the Michigan "compromise."

I will gladly vote for Obama

I will gladly vote for Obama in November, but I continue to be baffled by those who love to hate Hillary. What has she done to deserve such vilification? Is it her voting record? Her stand on the issues? Her commitment to an imperfect husband? Or is it because she's a woman who refuses to be demure and self-deprecating, who kept on fighting, refusing to give up the race before crossing the finish line? Senator Clinton is to be admired for her tenacity in the face of so many who revel is beating her up. She has won the hearts and minds of millions. She deserves a standing ovation, not a pie in the face.

ESSENTIALLY IRRELEVANT WHO

ESSENTIALLY IRRELEVANT WHO IS THE DEMOCRATIC CANDIDATE IS....! MCCAIN WILL BE "INSTALLED" IF NECESSARY JUST LIKE G.W. WAS "INSTALLED" RATHER THAN ELECTED! OUR CURRENT REGIME WILL LIKELY HIT IRAN A FEW WKS BEFORE NOV. 4 IN ORDER TO MAKE MCCAIN LOOK MORE LIKE A "WAR PRESIDENT" THAN OBAMA....!!

Of all the rationalizations

Of all the rationalizations and venom posted to this thread by those who *must* find an excuse for HRC's loss, what surprises me most is Ms Kahn's accusation of "affirmative action." Both Florida and Michigan violated party rules, and HRC had NO problem whatsoever with not seating them... until, that is, she realized that it might help her win. That's the kind of flip-flop that worries me to no end, as it has NOTHING to do with what's right, and EVERYTHING to do with winning at all costs. As for misogyny, I wonder what the term is for women who only voted for HRC because she was a woman... who could care less about her policies or her character, but only saw a "sister" doing something "historic" and oh by gosh we HAVE to vote for her because she's a woman! Is this really a good way to elect a president? Why not go back to who has the best hair style? Like many, I realize Obama has his faults, but like it or not, he won. And, like the author of this story, I do not believe that losing gives you the right to name the terms by which you lose.

When I see a woman on TV

When I see a woman on TV saying that now she would rather vote for McCain than Obama or when I read (as in some of the comments here) how wicked and nasty and devious etc... Hilary really is, I can only send kudos to the republican party : they have succeeded in deeply and emotionaly dividing the democratic party with very little effort on their part. And this to the point where it seems likely that they will win in November! And they won't even have to cheat this time! What trap are we falling into? Genklag

18 million voters would

18 million voters would disagree with your divisive punditry. Hillary has every right to do what she is doing. If she dropped out of sight, who will you kick around then? She is keeping us in the news, and I hope she does not stop. I will vote for Barrack Obama because he is a gentleman, not because pundits tell me I should. You are obviously obsessed and need to get a life.

Hillary lost this deal, it

Hillary lost this deal, it had nothing to do with men or media hating her. It has everything to do with Hillary's (and Bill's) political history and well-deserved, deep mistrust people have of them.

Don't write garbage. You

Don't write garbage. You only intensify the misogynistic stench of this disgusting primary season.

I sincerely hope Obama

I sincerely hope Obama doesn't choose Hillary for a running mate, because it wold be detrimental to his campaign. To woo more Hispanicv voters I'd like to see him choose Bill Richardson

Hillary has done much to

Hillary has done much to harm both Obama and the Democratic party. She is in many ways similar to Lieberman... a Republican in Dem clothing. I fear that Hilary's strategy is to be able to run in 2012. Practically speaking, Obama is competing against McCain+Clinton.

I agree completely with the

I agree completely with the first Anonymous comment titled Give it up about Senator Clinton. This woman has been vilified enough. Yes, she has flaws and her campaign had flaws. Now we'll start finding out more about Obama's flaws -- that is, if the media can give up the Hillary Clinton bashing. But of course, it won't be as much fun without her to bang about like a gong. I really just drop my jaw when the likes of Chris Matthews, Keith Olbermann, et al go on about how paranoid the Clinton campaign was. I think I'd be paranoid, too, if I had a network going at me hour upon hour, around the clock, 24/7. I became more and more appalled as I watched this fiasco of a primary conducted by the Democratic party and the media circus attending it. I do think the Democratic party should go back to the drawing boards on how it conducts its primaries in the future.

Yes, GET OVER IT! I'm tired

Yes, GET OVER IT! I'm tired of hearing about everyone's speculation about Hillary's motives. It takes a lot of ego to run for president, and maybe you have to be a little crazy. That means Obama, McCain, the rest of the candidates too. How do we know exactly what's going on in Obama's mind? It's probably not all pure and good. He's only human. I'd like to support Obama, but I find it difficult to start when those who have supported him all along continue to bash her. It hurts. So please! Move on and away from this obsession with Hillary's flaws.

I agree totally with Dr.

I agree totally with Dr. Leon who has voiced my thoughts exactly, from the beginning of his article to the end. What Hilary Clinton did was ungracious, unprofessional, and outragious considering the battle the Democrats have ahead of them with such a late start. May whoever posted "Give it up about Sen. Clinton" forgive me for having my rant. As for "Slashing a previously untrodden path": flexing your muscles inappropriately is no way to demonstrate your womanly strength. Sadly, what Hilary Clinton has achieved is to show she is no example to any woman who aspires to great things.

It's great that liberals are

It's great that liberals are happy with the Obama nomination, but we have to win in November. The condescension displayed by the Obama campaign towards the working class and the poor will be easily exploited by the Republicans come November. The misogyny displayed by the triumphant (male) Obama supporters will also be a factor in alienating voters, both female and male feminists. This campaign has to get a lot smarter real fast.

I've not recovered from the

I've not recovered from the 59 delegate gratuity which put him over the top post the DNC meeting! And you dare take this tack? Read some history about the time it took previous others to concede as late as the convention. We who urged her to not give up after we forced the DNC to revisit the Florida mess from a six day mistake prompted by the GOP and knew her 600k votes from Michigan were blocked while the state party handed Obama 59 delegates including 4 from those she earned were not pleased with all that affirmative action. Shame on you! Fie on you! Read some history.

Only because of her did

Only because of her did citizens in every state have a chance to vote. Was this the first election in the history of the U.S. where citizens of every state could vote, or at least in a long, long time? I'm proud of her and the strength and intelligence she showed throughout and that she circumvented the male dominated political scene. This system screwed all the othere candidates, as well. ' We need a one day vote across the nation for the primary. The caucuses should be tossed (another very unfair system) and only open citizen ballot voting allowed. And candidates should be financed by by the U.S. government; thus, the fund raising and lobbyists toosed out. And there should be no delegates and superdelegates to undercut the popular vote.

Hillary's principal

Hillary's principal principle is that it's good to increase her power. Obama appears to have other principles. It looks like we're gonna find out what Obama's principles really are. I'm pretty hopeful about his presidency, but I remind myself that he's only a human being, just like any other president. I do so want to start being proud of my country again, as soon as possible.

Give the scholarly

Give the scholarly pontifications about what HRC should have, could have, might have, will have done, a rest. The writer seems to think that HRC supporters will willingly follow HRC as she endorses Barack Obama. Not so. Contrary to accpted dogma, HRC supporters are able to think and reason for themselves. Many do not like what they are witnessing in the Democratic Party. They will look for other avenues of political expression. Organizing has already begun.
