Is McCain Another George W. Bush?

New York - Russia invades Georgia and President Bush goes on vacation. Our president has spent one-third of his entire two terms in office either at Camp David, Maryland, or at Crawford, Texas, on vacation.

His time away from the Oval Office included the month leading up to 9/11, when there were signs Osama bin Laden was planning to attack America, and the time Hurricane Katrina destroyed the city of New Orleans.

Sen. John McCain takes weekends off and limits his campaign events to one a day. He made an exception for the religious forum on Saturday at Saddleback Church in Southern California.

I think he made a big mistake. When he was invited last spring to attend a discussion of the role of faith in his life with Sens. Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton, at Messiah College in Pennsylvania, McCain didn't bother to show up. Now I know why.

It occurs to me that John McCain is as intellectually shallow as our current president. When asked what his Christian faith means to him, his answer was a one-liner. "It means I'm saved and forgiven." Great scholars have wrestled with the meaning of faith for centuries. McCain then retold a story we've all heard a hundred times about a guard in Vietnam drawing a cross in the sand.

Asked about his greatest moral failure, he cited his first marriage, which ended in divorce. While saying it was his greatest moral failing, he offered nothing in the way of explanation. Why not?

Throughout the evening, McCain chose to recite portions of his stump speech as answers to the questions he was being asked. Why? He has lived 71 years. Surely he has some thoughts on what it all means that go beyond canned answers culled from the same speech he delivers every day.

He was asked "if evil exists." His response was to repeat for the umpteenth time that Osama bin Laden is a bad man and he will pursue him to "the gates of hell." That was it.

He was asked to define rich. After trying to dodge the question -- his wife is worth a reported $100 million -- he finally said he thought an income of $5 million was rich.

One after another, McCain's answers were shallow, simplistic, and trite. He showed the same intellectual curiosity that George Bush has -- virtually none.

Where are John McCain's writings exploring the vexing moral issues of our time? Where are his position papers setting forth his careful consideration of foreign policy, the welfare state, education, America's moral responsibility in the world, etc., etc., etc.?

John McCain graduated 894th in a class of 899 at the Naval Academy at Annapolis. His father and grandfather were four star admirals in the Navy. Some have suggested that might have played a role in McCain being admitted. His academic record was awful. And it shows over and over again whenever McCain is called upon to think on his feet.

He no longer allows reporters unfettered access to him aboard the "Straight Talk Express" for a reason. He simply makes too many mistakes. Unless he's reciting talking points or reading from notes or a TelePrompTer, John McCain is lost. He can drop bon mots at a bowling alley or diner -- short glib responses that get a chuckle, but beyond that McCain gets in over his head very quickly.

I am sick and tired of the president of the United States embarrassing me. The world we live in is too complex to entrust it to someone else whose idea of intellectual curiosity and grasp of foreign policy issues is to tell us he can look into Vladimir Putin's eyes and see into his soul.

George Bush's record as a student, military man, businessman and leader of the free world is one of constant failure. And the part that troubles me most is he seems content with himself.

He will leave office with the country $10 trillion in debt, fighting two wars, our international reputation in shambles, our government cloaked in secrecy and suspicion that his entire presidency has been a litany of broken laws and promises, our citizens' faith in our own country ripped to shreds. Yet Bush goes bumbling along, grinning and spewing moronic one-liners, as though nobody understands what a colossal failure he has been.

I fear to the depth of my being that John McCain is just like him.

EVERY day people here where

EVERY day people here where I live (not in the USA, not in Canada) ask me who I am voting for - as if there is only Room at the Top. I tell them - and I mean it with all my soul - I want to see a veto-proof Democrat-led Senate. Finally. I want to see a 2/3rds or more Democrat-led Congress. I want to know that the people being elected now to office are seriously concerned about the erosion of our Constitution by the current, sitting President, abetted by the lack of such a veto-proof majority. If this were to happen, if people recognized the importance of voting locally above all - the "race" will be won at the true, gritty grassroots level that can make a difference where it counts. And if this 2/3rds majority were a bit larger and had real solidarity on behalf of we the people, then we could say "bring 'em on" to McCain with some serenity.

I believe McCain is still

I believe McCain is still trying to win the Viet Nam war, and cannot accept its failure. To him, "victory" in Iraq will finally compensate for that failure. While in a North Vietnam prison, he could do nothing about that war, except stew in his cell. Now he's free to exercise full force, if he becomes president.

Jack, thanks for speaking

Jack, thanks for speaking the truth, but I fear it is to no avail. The polls tell us that 23% of respondents have never heard of Joe Biden and another 28% have no opinion. As long as such utterly uninformed people are allowed a vote is it any wonder they elect fools? If McCain is elected, I'm leaving the country -- since it will no longer be my country.

Well, no...it was Georgia

Well, no...it was Georgia that attacked South Osessia. Are we still forgetting this? Perhaps CNN really is CIA. But it is true that John McCain looks like a man that will finish off the country like Bush and Cheeny have been setting up so well. You're being looted. Period.

Jack - I agree on your

Jack - I agree on your assessment and I can't understand why the polls show both candidates are even in this race. No country is able to destroy these Unites States; only its citizens can.

When politicians can get

When politicians can get away with suggesting that history will be siding with them, say fifty years from now, on clear cut issues currently considered terrible examples of their failures, lack of honesty and contempt for the electorate, when these politicians do so without seriously being challenged by the betters of that electorate, we have a major problem with our democracy.

the way I see mccain's

the way I see mccain's strange candidacy,it simply makes me thing about my own father who is also 79. Dad still goes to his office but he has now retired and has also given away all his money and shares of a company that he built by himself. This he did, and for us, plus what such kind of extra proof would be worth to next generations, I guess. Now, if my dad were to tell me today SON IM IN CHARGE HERE, i would clearly start worrying about mccain symptoms and about the meaning of life.

This is what passes for

This is what passes for intelligent commentary? " I fear to the depth of my being that John McCain is just like him." Wow. I fear, Jack, that Barack is just like him. Now we are both afraid. This is what is known as a hit piece and you should be ashamed, having been a journalist in your youth and all.

Jack, Thanks for your

Jack, Thanks for your take on John McCain. He, like Ronald Reagan, is an air-head. If a candidate is a good one, there is no need for the manufacturing job being done with McCain. When politicians speak, they are saying how they feel about the level of ignorance there is in throughout the listening audience. The Republicans have no respect for the intelligence of the people of this country. Even their colleagues should know better than to view McCain as qualified or worthy on any level. Being a POW means that you made a mistake and was captured for it. How many POWs have become candidates for the presidency? At this age, McCain should be spending some of his wife's money, but not trying to move into the White House.

What? Never heard of tar and

What? Never heard of tar and feathers?

Well said, sir. Of course

Well said, sir. Of course John McCain is yet another empty-headed buffoon ready to do the bidding of those who control him. You don't think for a minute that the Reps. are going to allow someone to be a candidate who might threaten the machine they've so carefully constructed to guarantee that we will remain in thrall to the military- industrial complex for the next jillion or so years? Someone who might defy them in their quest to expand drilling and mining for fossil fuels until the planet looks like Swiss cheese? Someone who might rock the boat of state with an original idea like, say, actually conducting diplomatic relationships with problematic heads of state instead of automatically branding them with labels guaranteed to further turn up the heat of their hatred of us? Naaa ... the G.O.P. is happy as pigs at the trough. Bush III suits them just fine. Look for McBush to nominate a v.p. who will be even more abhorrent than Cheney, if that's possible. They’ll just keep spewing the same ol’ rhetoric about gays and abortions, and a percentage (the less intellectually asute percentate) of the American populace will go after those hoary shibboleths like a bull to a red cape. I mean, here’s a man so stupid he doesn’t even know how many homes he has. Gee, that sure makes him a ‘man of the people’ doesn’t it? Yes, he was a P.O.W. in Vietnam . . . 35 years ago. Does that make him more qualified than the umpteen thousand vets who didn’t get captured? Nah... the only qualification he has, near as I can tell, is his wife’s money and the ability to spout “I’ll be (fill in the blank)’s worst nightmare” on cue. I think he’s right about that ... he’d certainly be America’s worst nightmare.

Unfortunately, W has set the

Unfortunately, W has set the bar so low that McCain actually looks good to some people.

As George W. has

As George W. has demonstrated to 21st Century America and the world, stupidity plus power is an extremely dangerous combination. So, why do we continue to elect stupid people to office? Stupid people are essentially the backbone of our nation, and although they are mostly powerless as individuals, they have enough collective power to elect men and women to represent them and their beliefs. Thing is, they're so stupid that they don't realize their chosen leaders aren't representing them, or even the stupidity in which they invest so much flimsy pride, but the very Beast that perpetuates their individual powerlessness. A vote for McCain is a vote for stupidity and false pride and all the bells and whistles that go along with them.

It was Goebbels who said: If

It was Goebbels who said: If you repeat a lie enough, then people will believe it. Bush and McCain are liars.

Ah, freedom of speech!! Say

Ah, freedom of speech!! Say it like it is Jack. It's time someone did.

Prediction: over the next

Prediction: over the next few months, we are fed so-called poll results that get narrower and narrower, plus there will be more national security and world security events, all leading up to a "close" election that will be bought and paid for by the ruling class, the reasons given to us by the media (owned by the ruling class) will be that Obama just didn't seem as strong on security and international relations... open your eyes, it is already happening... follow the money... that is where the power is, where it always has been, and where it always will be... we will only have a Democratic president if they feel like we are on the brink of revolution, when things get so bad that people are on the streets in mass... FREE YOUR MINDS!!!

He is too old, too rich, and

He is too old, too rich, and too dumb to really know what the average American is going through, much less the rest of the world.

Right on!!!

Right on!!!

Re: Half of Americans are

Re: Half of Americans are below average intelligence Sorry to spoil your argument, but that is due to the very definition of the IQ. The construct IQ is assumed to have a Gaussian normal distribution in EVERY population, with an average IQ of 100. In other words: half of the population will always be below or just equal to the average, if the distribution is not severely skewed by intervening factors. But there are other indicators that in deed bolster your point, like e.g. the abysmal performance of US primary education when compared to the outcome in other countries. There is indeed a trend of dumbing down large parts of the society and it plays into the hands of the powers that be.

After suffering through 8

After suffering through 8 years of Gov. Bush, a certified PSYCHOPATH and IMBECILE, the world is now facing the reign of a PRE-SENILE, whose closest personal advisor is a guy named Al Z. Heimer.

The definition of

The definition of Intelligence, as "the capacity to learn, to reason and to understand" HAS BEEN CHANGED to "the capacity to Lie; Order Genocide; Bankrupt the Nation; Dismiss the Constitution; Start Nuclear War". We're so smart that we've allowed ourselves to be assisted in moral suicide.

As much as I dislike McCain,

As much as I dislike McCain, this article warrants an eyeroll. The American public doesn't care if a candidate is a mental midget. We vastly prefer folksy or brawny to brainy. The smartest thing the right wing ever did was demonize smartness. Somehow they convinced people that intellect and education is blue-state elitism. The tragicomic aspect of this strategy is that when you pull the rug out from under education, there is no social progress.

Wow! Aren't you

Wow! Aren't you perspicacious!! What took you so long?

Half of Americans are below

Half of Americans are below average intelligence. Of the remainder, how many are not too busy with getting their share to even think about the major problems of this country? That may have something to do with who gets elected.

That's a rhetorical

That's a rhetorical question, right? The answer is,'of course.' Bush's is a failed regime. McCain wants to prolong it.

For your Jack, "In a World

For your Jack, "In a World of Universal Deceit Telling the Truth is a Revolutionary Act" - From Orwell - 1984.

Tossing gratuitous insults

Tossing gratuitous insults at "fundamentalists" is as common at my huge, urban, liberal church as it likely is at the local atheist meet-up. How do we get to reasonable discussion of urgent issues when people want to stir up their adrenaline and testosterone with namecalling? My nephew self-identifies as an evangelical. He has got impressive academic credentials. We need good brains talking across boundaries. My nephew will not vote for McCain.

"Is McCain another Dubyah?"

"Is McCain another Dubyah?" the author of the article asks. Not exactly and exactly. They are both Charlie McCarthy and Cheney is Edgar Bergen. (Look them up on Wikipedia, kids, if you don't know who Bergen and Charlie McC. were) And after McCain , it will be another affable bafoon. We told you, the Republic is over, they stuck the knife into it on Novemeber 22, 1963 and twisted the knife for 17 years until they got the current long running puppet show going.

In short: For as long as

In short: For as long as The Owners of The Media & YOU remain in Control The Media Will Remain Silent! & as sure as we're in Deep Debt & Deficit, the Media Will Come Alive & Protest Every Second, should a Democrat Ever "Win" an election! Just watch it happen!

After 7 Years of being

After 7 Years of being "Bussshhhed" around we've heard Literally Nothing in the way of Outrage from the Main Stream Media! Not in the quest for Truth, not in the lust for Leadership, not even a curiosity of "How did bush Really get into office, or What Was the Actual Vote Count, or What about those WMDs, or Why start an Illegal War with the 'W'rong Country, or Why Cover Every Thing Up as "Classified" like the identities of those Responsible for for Committing Treason, & Commuting the Crony that got Caught & Sentenced but never did a Second of Time? The Rehash of Bill Clinton is Always Prime fodder, but just not about "The Surplus' he left us with in place of the "Deficit". King George or King mcCAIN? Which ever, the media won't ask! Mark my words, "should a Democrat "WIN" you won't be able to carry the evening paper in your arms for the Bulk of articles of Outrage!"

Ah, the refreshing, oh so

Ah, the refreshing, oh so honest commentary of our dear friend Jack! I agree 100%. Do you suppose gw will leave office covering himself and his merry band of thugs with blanket pardons for whatever legal issues should arise later? Since he has been writing the play book as he goes I'm sure a blank, retroactive pardon would fly.

What amazes me is not the

What amazes me is not the fact that McCain is what Jack Cafferty describes him as -that should be a given, but that anybody is surprised. The Republicans rule because they own the country. The game is as fixed as pro wrestling. If that were not the case, explain Bush, who failed all the way to the top, or "Big John", who if not for his family would not have been given a garbage skowe to command. Sure people complain, the way wrestling fans shriek when "The Body Beautiful" cold cocks the "American Dream" with a chair. "How could the ref take this moment to feed his seeing eye dog and miss the foul?" Its always the same. And Obahma? Well he could be champ but only if the WWF lets him..He is after all just another wrestler.

McCain is a Bush clone --

McCain is a Bush clone -- that Pavlovian smart-ass dumb-reflex one-liner knee-jerk response to all challenges is the trademark of today's Republicans. That's the only type that makes it to the "right" side of any American ballot. Who need facts when you have "faith"? Abe Lincoln and Teddy Roosevelt would be appalled. Their party has been eaten up by worms.

All Republican crooks are

All Republican crooks are liars and bullies who play variations on rackets involving force and fraud. We are the garden. They are the weeds. Yet every crook must follow his unique bogus star.

Is McCain Another George W.

Is McCain Another George W. Bush? Only in the sense that he is the front man for the neo-cons. George, Like Ronald was merely the affable front man to be seen by the public, while the neo cons ran the show.

Cafferty takes McCain to

Cafferty takes McCain to task for his airhead answers about religion. Great stuff. I understand Cafferty has a reputation as an iconoclastic gadfly for whom nothing is sacred. Wonderful. Then how about a Cafferty piece now on how ALL the candidates are blowhards and hypocrites for publicly espousing religion when they really don't believe in it: they just do it because America is largely an airhead religious country and they know that to be elected they have to cowtow to the benighted masses. And if they do really DO believe, then they have no business being president. How about it Jack, will you take up the challenge? Probably not: I see you listed several times as a Lutheran. William Lyon, Madrid

Bravo, Jack Cafferty. McCain

Bravo, Jack Cafferty. McCain lost this Repub back when the Keating Five was on the front pages. A man flailing in deep waters. Of course he is "saved and forgiven." That's valuable currency in the rapture bound segment.

Jack Cafferty needs his OWN

Jack Cafferty needs his OWN show on CNN. He's the only part of "The Sicheyashun Room" I can stand. I'm usually paying bills or doing some kind of paper work and keep the sound off until I see him. Go, Jack!

Right on Jack!! Keep

Right on Jack!! Keep speaking out loud and clear.

Just when I was so hopeful

Just when I was so hopeful for the Obama administration.....the handwriting is on the wall. American people are slipping into the sheep/sleep mode and accepting the McCain doctrine. Fear is the great motivator to keep the status quo and what a nightmare that has been. I longed to recognize my USA again. Maybe it is my delusion too. Hope is dimming.

I generally come to truthout

I generally come to truthout to get away from the corporate media. I don't want to be too overzealous about this , but isn't that the idea?

The media gave McCain the

The media gave McCain the win in that Orange County conversation with the Rev. leaving me flabbergasted! Simplistic answers, "Evil exists. Defeat it" drew a roar of approval from the audience, er, congregation. Obama's longer response listing some evils, joining with others to confront them (OMG, not DEFEAT them?) and a reminder that humility went a long way here as much evil has been done in the name of defeating evil! And yet,David Gergen on CNN, William Crystol in the NYT, and so many other Hoover Institution types raved about McCain's forthrightness, strength and ridiculed Obama's windyness. YE GADS! We can't sit still for a reasoned answer? Give us the gusto..America, RAH RAH RAH! Right down the tubes.

Bravo. Mr. Cafferty is

Bravo. Mr. Cafferty is exactly correct. How refreshing, and how unusual, to see criticism of a conservative in the American media.

McCain is a puppet, that's

McCain is a puppet, that's for sure. Unfortunately, he is ahead 5 points in the Zogby poll... Why can't people see how much of a stooge the guy is. Bush retired from the presidency on Sept. 12th, 2001, when Cheney took over.

Cafferty seems to lead the

Cafferty seems to lead the pack in telling us about McCain's simple-mindedness. The MSM has been patting McCain on the back all week about what a good presentation he made at Rick Warren's table, and how direct and assertive he was. Baloney. He was as empty as a vacuum bell jar!

now lets sit back and wait

now lets sit back and wait for the blind defenders of the GOP to refute all these FACTS. thats right folks, FACTS...meaning that you can have your opinion, but you cant change the FACTS...YOU CAN'T CHANGE THE FACTS i.e. truth...ever heard of it?.

An accurate assessment. They

An accurate assessment. They never usually tell us what the debt is on the mainstream media, just the deficit, ten trillion dollars in debt and Clinton had left us with a surplus. Bush should be hanged.
