Washington - The former US Senator Jesse Helms, a legendary isolationist and defender of "Southern values" who spent much of his life goading liberals, died yesterday.

Universally known as "Senator No" he was deeply sceptical of international cooperation and intervention. His refusal to ratify international accords, notably the Kyoto treaty on global warming, made him the bete noir of the Georgetown foreign policy establishment

"Compromise, hell! ... If freedom is right and tyranny is wrong, why should those who believe in freedom treat it as if it were a roll of bologna to be bartered a slice at a time?" he wrote in an editorial setting out his political style back in 1959.

US business disliked him for his tireless campaigns for unilateral US economic sanctions on Iran and Cuba. He was also deeply sceptical of America's opening up to China and always ready to reject international cooperation if it meant yielding American sovereignty.

As chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee he used his power to oppose the international criminal court, the international land mine treaty, the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty as well as Kyoto.

For many he was a caricature of a right wing conservative, being pro-gun, pro-death penalty and anti-abortion. He ran what many considered to be a vendetta against publicly-funded arts, and was frequently accused of homophobia and sexism,

He exploited racial divisions in his native North Carolina and was first elected to the US Senate in 1972. A deeply polarising figure in each of hi five contests he never won more than 55% of the votes. On the campaign trail he tapped into the fears of middle and working class white voters stirring up anger against affirmative actions programme to help unemployed blacks.

He famously ran a "white hands" ad that showed a white man crumpling up a letter while a narrator said: "You needed that job, and you were the best qualified, but they had to give it to a minority, because of a racial quota. Is that really fair?"

He also used his power in the senate to block the nomination of black Americans to the courts and to ambassadorial positions.

A journalist in his early career, he persuaded millions of Americans that their country was being run by liberals in Washington, and controlled by the New York-based media.

Never caring much what his critics thought, he rampaged against what he believed were the evils of abortion, affirmative action and homosexuality.

"Just think about it - homosexuals, lesbians - disgusting people - marching in our streets, demanding all sorts of things including the right to marry each other and the right to adopt children. How do you like (that)?" he said.

Near the end of his career he would make his way his way through the US Capitol on a scooter. He decided not to run for a sixth term in 2002 and was diagnosed with vascular dementi after repeated minor strokes in his brain in 2006.

In his later years a compassionate side emerged that few of his believed was possible. At the instigation of U2's Bono he accepted that debt was the cause of suffering in the developing world and campaigned for a debt relief bill and attended his first ever pop concert in Washington DC.

    He was 86.

The late Senator Jesse

The late Senator Jesse Helms, in spite of his faults and shortcomings, was probably one of America's greatest statesmen of the Cold War era--especially during the 1980s. He was one of the very few in the U.S. Senate who was actually aware of the world's situation and actually made a very significant contribution to keeping America free. This is not an opinion, but, rather, a fact which I can state because of my correspondence that he had with me for well over a decade.

To borrow a phrase ... "You

To borrow a phrase ... "You should always speak good of the dead. He's DEAD ... GOOD!!!" Thank You, Leonard Doyle, for a most fitting Obituary of an UGLY American.

When I heard about the

When I heard about the untimely death of Jesse Helms, I immediately called Satan to make certain that there was room in hell for him. He represented much of what is wrong in the US!

Independence worth

Independence worth celebrating

Forgive me if I'm unable to

Forgive me if I'm unable to shed a tear for the passing of this bullying bigot called Jesse Helms, but he was nothing more than a voice for hatred, who appealed to people's fears, anger, prejudices and the most negative of human feelings. The fact that he mellowed a bit in his later years cuts no ice with me--he should have thought of all that during the civil rights movement, the move toward affirmative action, women's rights, lesbian and gay rights, etc. Now that he's gone, may we, not him, rest in peace.

I lived in NC for 20 years.

I lived in NC for 20 years. It is impossible to underestimate the strength and guidance that Helms gave to people who hate. In addition to inspiring often-violent racists, he targeted artists--ARTISTS--as thought creative people were somehow involved in a monolithic conspiracy to steal funds from good (white) working people. He successfully promoted the idea that government support of the arts was unamerican and that artists by virtue of the fact that they sought support from the government (and were often female, non-white and gay) were immoral. His supporters often cited as his finest political quality: "You always know where Jesse stands." Well, he stood for hate, fear, and intolerance. That should be his epitaph.

Southerners today would

Southerners today would laugh derisively at what this troglodyte considered "Southern Values"

"Southern Values." Does that

"Southern Values." Does that mean the perennial separation of white people and black people? Helms was wrong in about every aspect of his tenure as a senator. To eulogize him in positive terms is a mistake. His passing should be a celebration for losing the idiotic ante bellum mentality that shackled the south for generations.

I'm sure that Jesse Helms

I'm sure that Jesse Helms was a good father, husband or a good grandfather but his legacy was one of mean-spirited bigotry and blockage. The progress this country has made over his lifetime was accomplished without any help from him. It's unfortunate that he will be remembered for his negative actions. We might have been better off if he had never been elected.

""We have pretty tight

""We have pretty tight evidence that during two of his re-election campaigns, his goons murdered two individuals working for candidates opposing Helms' re-elections. Another less than admirable aspect of this Southern racist."" I would love to know more of this got any names and locations of these perps??? Viva La Revolucion

Jesse was a racist, a bigot,

Jesse was a racist, a bigot, a homophobe, the worst sort of right wing nut job. But there is one thing the Democrats could learn from him. He grabbed a position like a pit bull and didn't give a tinkers damn what anyone thought. Of course liberal positions need to be informed by fact, and flexible to the circumstances. But the left could certainly take lessons from Jesse on standing up for their convictions and persisting in the good fight. Jesse was never afraid of any fight. The Democratic leadership remains terrified of all of them.

Good Ridens to that old

Good Ridens to that old brain .

Why should we

Why should we care....there's any number of politicians out there who could be his clone. Politics as usual.

Isn't it amazing how these

Isn't it amazing how these hard-core conservatives suddenly develop a soft side just before they are going to meet their Maker. Personally, I'm not sorry to see the old SOB gone. I don't believe in hell but I do believe in reincarnation so I know he's gonna come back as a poor black lesbian just so he can walk in the shoes of those he so loved to spit upon. "Judge not that ye be judge..."

We have pretty tight

We have pretty tight evidence that during two of his re-election campaigns, his goons murdered two individuals working for candidates opposing Helms' re-elections. Another less than admirable aspect of this Southern racist.

regardless of his politics

regardless of his politics or truthout's point of view, i would have preferred to see a real photo of Jesse Helms instead of a cartoon picture. may he rest in peace. respecting the person although perhaps not the position is an integral part in my view of integrating some healing into this process of mediation of different views. some thoughts from the outer wing.

Leonard Doyle has written a

Leonard Doyle has written a satisfying obituary for Jesse Helms. He put the emphasis where it needed to be -- Helms' mean-spirited persistently negative attitude to anything that wasn't, in his fixed opinions, red-white & blue American pie. Compliments to Mr. Doyle!

'We won't see the likes of

'We won't see the likes of him again soon'-let's all hope that's true this time.
