Here's a Little Straight Talk, My Friends. John McCain Hates Social Security

Sen. John McCain, I'm one of your friends, right? The kind of friend who can handle some of your special brand of Straight Talk™.

So why won't you just tell me you hate Social Security?

Twice this week you lambasted the founding principle of Social Security, that, as you described, "we are paying present-day retirees with the taxes paid by young workers in America today." In separate appearances, you called the way Social Security has been structured for more than 70 years an "absolute disgrace," and a "broken" system.

Twice! You even called that pronouncement "Straight Talk™." That's no slip of the tongue. You must mean it.

So why did you backtrack yesterday when asked about it from reporters? Instead of saying that you hate the founding principle of Social Security, you revised your remarks: "They are paying into a system that they won't receive benefits from on the present track that it's on - that's the point."

That's not even Straight Talk™! As the Center for Budget and Policy Priorities explained after the last Social Security trustees report, "Social Security is structurally sound and does not require drastic changes."

While I thought we were friends, this sadly hasn't been the first time this year in which you didn't give me Straight Talk™ on Social Security.

You told the Wall Street Journal in March that you support President Bush's earlier proposal to partially privatize Social Securtiy, saying, "As part of Social Security reform, I believe that private savings accounts are a part of it - along the lines that President Bush proposed." When the Journal pointed out your website said something different, you promised to change the website.

You still haven't! And do you know how hard it is to even find the two sentences describing your Social Security position on your website? It's not even mentioned under your "Issues" menu on the homepage. You just said "Americans have got to understand" what a "disgrace" the program is. How can they if your website won't tell them?!

Most importantly, why did you tell the Wall Street Journal that you support "private savings accounts?" Why bother with the Karl Rove/Frank Luntz poll-tested phrases? That's not Straight Talk™! Say what you really mean: "privatization!"

That's what you did in 2004.

After being asked if "privatizing Social Security [would] be a priority for you moving forward," you responded, "Without privatization, I don't see how you can possibly, over time, make sure that young Americans are able to receive Social Security benefits."

Yet, last month, you pretended you never said that, telling voters at a town hall, "I'm not for, quote, privatizing Social Security. I never have been. I never will be."

What is it about Social Security that makes you allergic to Straight Talk™? Are you worried about keeping one of your few leads in the polls, among seniors?

I'm sure if you told seniors that you hate Social Security, always have and always will, they'd understand.

Maybe they wouldn't vote for you, but at least you could still be friends.

Why do anyone believe what

Why do anyone believe what John McCain says when it can be so easily disproved? Can someone explain that to me?

This may be the only comment

This may be the only comment this 61 year old Vietnam Vet agrees with McCain about. I earned it, I will certainly take it until it implodes. It was/is a terrible idea. We must give the kids a privatization option to get out of this government rip-off. That money should be able to be past on to their family inheritance.

McFlip Flop is special. He

McFlip Flop is special. He should get a PET/CT of his brain to check for dementia.

If he truly hates Social

If he truly hates Social Security as much as he claims, then why doesn't he give the checks back? If my memory is correct he had $25,000 listed as income on his 2007 taxes! He shouldn't be a hypocrite by accepting money he condemns.

Let's be honest here. SS is

Let's be honest here. SS is NOT in trouble. It's one of the most successful programs our government has. The problem for the Republicans is that Wall Street isn't getting to feed itself at the trough. Consider that, with privatization, Wall Street will earn commissions on all those private transactions -- even if the investments tank! It's a Golden Egg for the Fat Cats. And that is the ONLY reason they want to privatize. I am just shy of 52 years old. Thanks to recent bursting bubbles on Wall Street (dot com, housing, etc.) and an economy in shambles, I am decades behind on personal retirement investments. What little I had is long gone, thanks to the Fat Cats stealing it all back. Without SS I will NEVER be able to retire. I'll just have to keep working... at some minimum wage part-time job, once I'm PNGed from the corporate world.

I'm too old to still work,

I'm too old to still work, and too plagued with physical ailments to do so...even if there were jobs in my area, which there aren't. If I didn't have a social security check every month and own my own home, I'd be out on the streets. And my check is under $800 a month. I'd like to see John McPain live on that. My poor late mom lived on even less social security. And if there wasn't Medicare, I'd be dead, but then I wouldn't have to worry about getting a social security check...

keep telling people you

keep telling people you think social security is despicable, mcsame it is really gonna help the democrats down ticket in november and thanks for your help in destroying the repuglitard party

Social Security funds are

Social Security funds are now just IOUs, because the money was borrowed to pay for things like the war in Iraq. So they want to change it before what they have done becomes so obvious that the guy in the street knows about it. Don't you guys wonder where the government keeps getting money while lowering taxes? While most "normal" people aren't really interested in the magic thinking that makes this possible, but I think this one might "trickle down" if the problem were more obvious.

The Senile Express ran on

The Senile Express ran on delusions...quote; "Twice this week you lambasted the founding principle of Social Security, that, as you described, "we are paying present-day retirees with the taxes paid by young workers in America today." Sorry Mr McCain retirees Bob & Betty for ease on your dementia effected faculties began to draw SSA in 2005 at age 65 born in 1940 both payed into Social Security for the sake of argument beginning in 1955 at age 15 when a dollar bought QUALITY & QUANTITY... http://www.fiftiesweb.com/pop/prices-1955.htm House $22k Ford car $1606-$2944 Gas: $.23 Bread $.18 Postage stamp: $.03 Sirloin chops: $ .69 lb. 2008 Same house only re-painted $220k Ford car $22k-52k Gas $4.40 Bread $2.79 Postage stamp $0.42 Sirloin Chops $6.90 lb YOUR THEORY LACKS ANY REMOTELY FEASIBLE BASIS CONSIDERING HOW MUCH FISCALLY STRONGER THOSE DOLLARS BOB & BETTY PAID INTO SOCIAL SECURITY BETWEEN 1955-2005 WERE EVEN DURING THE TURMULTOUS 1970`s COMPARED TO TODAY...WITH $0.91 OF EVERY DOLLAR GOING OVERSEAS TO CHINA FOR BELOW CARNIVAL GRADE CRAP!

sadly, there are people

sadly, there are people like anonymous above at 21:28 who believe all the lies they have been told about Social Security and don't know a damn thing about it. just like McCain.

Why not do a study about SS

Why not do a study about SS as if it had been set up as a true pension plan i.e. if contributions were actual;ly invested in real assets? Lets say half in the S&P 500 and half in corporate bonds. The reality it was set up the way it was for political reasons. The democrats have been living off it ever since!

MCSame is Evil just like

MCSame is Evil just like every other politician. Until the american people realize that they are just modern slaves to their own economy, nothing will change.

Well, if John is too shy to

Well, if John is too shy to express his views on Social Security to his senior supporters, I sure hope that the Obama fans will do it for him!

This is typical hypocrisy

This is typical hypocrisy from someone who accepts over $58,ooo in tax free service related disability benefits each year while independently wealthy and receiving a Senator's salary and benefits. He is obviously just another hog at the trough and a politician who is happy for the money he can carry off but is not concerned about the vast majority of Americans who rely upon Social Security and the money they put into the system to guarantee their own retirement.
