The Sickening Praise for "The Daily Show"

Is media praise for Jon Stewart's "Daily Show" a tacit form of convoluted self-loathing? (Photo: Michael Nagle / The New York Times)

As corporate media coverage of the presidential race becomes even more notably stingy with intrepid journalism, the mainstream press enthusiasm for "The Daily Show" seems more cloying than ever.

The pattern is now a routine feature of the media landscape: "The Daily Show" gets laudatory attention from major news organizations, where countless journalists watch like shackled prisoners in awe of Superman.

    Look - up in the media sky - it's a bird, it's a plane, it's Jon Stewart!

While news accounts note how many viewers hold faux "news anchor" Stewart in higher esteem as a journalist than the "real" ones at the top of the media pack, there's a sheepish quality to much of the coverage about "The Daily Show."

After all, many big-name journalists have earned their keep by describing and analyzing the embroideries of the emperor's new clothes. It blows their conformist minds to see a network program that regularly exposes right-wing rulers without a stitch.

Last month, a Sunday edition of The New York Times devoted more than two full broadsheet pages to "The Daily Show," starting with a color photo of Stewart that filled nearly half the cover page of the newspaper's "Arts & Leisure" section. The program "has earned a devoted following that regards the broadcast as both the smartest, funniest show on television and a provocative and substantive source of news," eminent Times critic Michiko Kakutani wrote.

Consider the subtexts of this passage in the story: "Mr. Stewart ... and his writers have energetically tackled the big issues of the day - 'the stuff we find most interesting,' as he said in an interview at the show's midtown Manhattan offices, the stuff that gives them the most 'agita,' the sometimes somber stories he refers to as his 'morning cup of sadness.' And they've done so in ways that straight news programs cannot: speaking truth to power in blunt, sometimes profane language, while using satire and playful looniness to ensure that their political analysis never becomes solemn or pretentious."

Well, O.K. That says a lot about "The Daily Show." But what does it say about the "real" news media - and especially about the most important and self-important huge media outlets that dispense news with enormous ripple effects across the media terrain?

If - as The New York Times soberly reported in the article - "straight news programs cannot" tackle the "big issues of the day" while "speaking truth to power," we should ask a key question: Why not?

But this is not a question that media outlets like The Times seem interested in pursuing to any depth.

Contrasts with the overwhelming bulk of corporate media are primarily drawn to underscore the uniqueness and extraordinary qualities of "The Daily Show." It's exceptional as an exception. Comedy Central's most famous program is in the spotlight, and the vast expanses of the corporate media are the arrays of darkness that make it so conspicuous. What sheds light is punched up by what blocks it.

Absent from the fawning media coverage of "The Daily Show" is evident self-awareness that the elaborate praise is a tacit form of convoluted self-loathing - in professional terms anyway - among the likes of, say, Times journalists. Their own media institution is so circumscribed and so lumbering in its daily incarnation that they're apt to be amazed and envious at the incisively documented presentations on "The Daily Show."

That's the way it goes in medialand. What isn't conspicuous is apt to be insidious. The tick-tock of US media hypnosis may be passably good at looking back - reexamining some aspects of propaganda for the Iraq invasion, for instance, years after it occurs - while now helping to mesmerize the country into escalation of the war in Afghanistan. But let's not quibble. Everybody has a job to do.

Those of us who get most of

Those of us who get most of our news via the internet and sites like this, via C-SPAN, PBS, and The Real News, have been sickened by corporate news outlets for years. What is the answer? We all know the problem. We all know the impact. We all understand that the media that gets paid the most does the most harm to our country. What do we do about it? That is what no one seems to be able to figure out.

Norm; You've done it again.

Norm; You've done it again. You've hit the nail on the head. Our so-called Major Media have long since forgotten what their actual purpose is. We neither hear nor see anything resembling true journalism. In Presidential news conferences we seldom hear any difficult questions thrown out. And, if we do, and the answer is ambiguous, there is no follow-up. The British PM should get off so easy. When Sarah Palin is interviewed we can be certain we will hear no questions that she will have a difficult time answering. After all, she's an attractive woman, and she might strike back. No one is going to back this broad into a corner and come away unscathed. That's why she's in the position she's in. She IS an attack dog, with lipstick. I just don't see Charlie Gibson giving her a hard time. Or anyone else for that matter. She IS a politician, you guys. She's not a wimpy little housewife. If the Media had done its job for the last eight years we wouldn't be having thepproblems we are now dealing with.

WHY NOT? Because MSM worries

WHY NOT? Because MSM worries only about the ratings. Public broadcasting covers a lot of issues, but who watches them, outside of a small circle of friends. Jonathon Stewart provides more real news about the harder issues than CNN, Headline News, MSNBC, and Fox put together. Jonathon Stewart has put them on notice that they better get their act together. Also, Kudos to Stephan Colbert.

We (consumers and media

We (consumers and media alike) are enthralled by the Daily Show because it achieves through satire that which is inconceivable by a β€œstraight” news program. Namely, through the lens of comedic relief, it reveals to us an uncompromising portrait of ourselves, complete with the abhorrent extent of our entrainment, and the mind-warping degree of dissonance vexing our psyche (soul). It reflects back to us, in medicinal terms, the abominable tragedy passing as our political dialogue, while encouraging us to assign responsibility for the abomination to the characters in the play, rather than acknowledge and authenticate its true author. Satire is the scalpel to our denial, laughter the only logical response. Anything else would require a genuine confrontation with our shadow, and god knows we are too busy for that.

The Daily Show deserves

The Daily Show deserves EVERY bit of praise it gets for pointing out the things that the mainstream "real" media is too cowardly or paid off to say. It deserves EVERY bit of praise for getting people who normally wouldn't pay attention to politics to become engaged. And if so called "real" journalists have a problem with the attention the show gets, then I say this: HOWABOUT DOING YOUR JOBS? Instead of parroting the candidates talking points and not asking questions, grow some balls! GROW A SET.

I am grateful that Jon

I am grateful that Jon Edwards has turned his show into political commentary. How about an article on the upcoming fraudulent election, Norman?

While I agree totally with

While I agree totally with your comments on the mainstream media, your message at first seems to be critical of The Daily Show and John Stewart. As much as I want (and expect) the MSM to report Republican hypocrisy, The Daily Show is an essential substitute--that must be taken seriously even though it's on the Comedy Channel. Fortunately, Keith Olbermann's commentaries on MSNBC get good attention, though less than the mainstream network broadcasts on NBC, etc.

Why, oh why is the Daily

Why, oh why is the Daily Show the ONLY source of the truth? At least bring back Walter Cronkite, please. These so-called "objective" anchors make me ill. They never, ever call anyone on their lying advertisements... they never, ever, understand the difference between "fair and balanced" and BASED IN FACT.

The MSM has completely and

The MSM has completely and utterly failed in its existence over the past few decades. They have twisted this election into a circus while giving a free ride to McCain, up until Palin joined the circus. Even then, it won't be long before negativity resumes on Obama and falls away from the McCain ticket. The MSM journalists should be ashamed of themselves although it is mostly the corporate ownership and profit driven sensationalism that was the nail in the coffin of actual news reporting. It's bad enough the majority of American's are devoid of critical thinking skills, but absent timely and factual information, they are now completely ignorant as well. The wool has been pulled and I fear that short of a legitimate revolution, there is no turning back this damage.

Olbermann and Maddow. We

Olbermann and Maddow. We have them as well. I'm still dumbfounded at the way the Corporate Controlled Media is tripping over themselves to not report the truth. They don't have to be balanced when there is nothing to balance with. If the errors and bad judgment of one side outweighs the other side, REPORT IT THAT WAY. Don't try to balance it just to appear to be looking fair. The scales of justice are just that. Scales. The dead weight on one side will make the other side rise. Its not the medias job to continually balance the scale artificially. If it doesn't balance, it doesn't balance.

This sort of story from the

This sort of story from the NYT and the MSM is like getting a coded message in eyeblinks from hostages on public view. Where are the journalists who spoke out? Gone, the only ones left to speak are the muzzled ones, hostages to their groceries, thier mortgages, their kids' college tuition -- all the things we all need jobs to pay for. Financial threats not strong enough? How about a little arrest, by way of warning, and happened to Amy Goodman and her staff reporting at the RNC.

I used to hold out hope that

I used to hold out hope that the media was just slow. I now offer the thought that no longer are they necessary for the health of the nation, but in fact should be charged as a obstruction to our national security. The media is purposely keeping the nation away from understanding the facts and truths necessary for "we the people" to make informed decisions for our country and children. They are instigating national division and have mutated their unique constitutional power to create animosity as a means to generate profit. Profit over security and profit over the well being of our future generations. When a candidate says something that is contradicted by video and documentation then it's a lie. Not a half-truth and not a talking point. It's a lie and should be reported as such. When a candidate is involved in a scandal then the press is responsible to report the facts and not positions. Finally when pundits work for a campaign then they should be advertised as such every time. With 50 days left you would think the press might want to know what these people are going to do for the Country. I am sure in Russia they don't have this choice and this country we just throw it away after so many people have died to make sure we have it.

Keith Olbermann tries, but

Keith Olbermann tries, but he is only one person and had too many hats. To be the only valid news commentator on TV to open up and condemn the untruths of Bush, McCain and company makes it inevitable that sometimes he "goes too far." This is an unfortunate product of not one other such person existing on air. To believe Charles Gibson is neutral is quite hilarious. Who else this year thought estate taxes was an important enough issue to waste 15 minutes of a debate on it? And Britt Humes is so biased it is amazing. At least Olbermann is honest about his politics. Humes is not and will go down as a joke when people view his archival stuff. Similarly they keep begging the Democrats to go after Republican lies because they have no courage to. We saw, sadly, with Congress, that they also have no courage or brains at all.

The media's disgraceful

The media's disgraceful performance can only be countered the way the Republicans counter the occasional diligent performance: by screaming, yelling, bombarding the networks with letters, emails and phone calls, and having all Democrat talking heads educated in how to respond. We have some terrific spokespeople: Obama himself, Paul Begala, Sandy Lakoff, Drew Weston, etc. If they can Mau-mau Olberman off MSNBC, we should be able to get rid of airheads like John Roberts and blatantly biased interviewers on ABC and CBS.

I wouldn't be able to

I wouldn't be able to tolerate life in the USA under the "leadership" of the Republican administration were it not for The Daily Show and The Colbert Report. With the exception of C-Span, Keith Olbermann and Rachel Maddow, they are the only truth tellers out there. Fortunately, the youth of America gets its news from Comedy Central. They might not show up in the polls, but that's because they all have cell phones. I only hope and pray that they vote. Obama will be their obvious choice.

Mainstream media is full of

Mainstream media is full of a bunch of kowtowing sissies afraid to push for the truth and when they do, or when they speak their minds they're demoted or fired like Oberman and Mathews. At least Jon Stewart has the balls and liberty because he's on cable to speak his mind AND the truth. That's why mainstream media gives him so much attention. They're jealous of the liberty he has do so.

John Stewart is a true

John Stewart is a true American hero at a time when there are few. I know this goes without saying, but don't forget Steven Colbert, the man who had the balls to personally confront Bush, the entire Joint Chiefs of Staff, and the Washington "Press Corps." The "mainstream media," e.g., the government-controlled Republican press, received orders from Rove not to report on what had happened, AND EVERY SINGLE OUTLET COMPLIED WITH THE GOVERNMENT ORDER. Thank God for the internet, but recognize that this government must be brought down by any means necessary, and the individuals involved must be tried, convicted, and sent to prison for the rest of their lives. If not, the next batch will destroy the internet as we know it. The steps they are taking to do just that are already underway.

Sounds like "sour grapes" to

Sounds like "sour grapes" to me

I like JS a lot but I am

I like JS a lot but I am growing irritated by the excessive praise because it seems like an excuse for regular journalist to let themselves off the hook for not doing the real work of their own jobs. And let's consider the effectiveness of JS--two terms of Bush and if McCain/Palin get to be king and queen of the prom, then another 4 yrs of the same. So while they say everyone likes being enlightened by JS, the show is not really having too much effect.

Sounds like "someone" has a

Sounds like "someone" has a bad case of Stewart-envy. Tune-in, get laid, shut up, and write something constructive! Why is TO "printing" this drivel?

Most of the news is

Most of the news is Republican. Jon Stewart pokes wholes in their balloons. It's so funny when Stewart runs tapes of the politican when they contradict themselves. PBS is news in depth, but only Jon Stewart and Colbert call a spade a spade.

National Public Radio is

National Public Radio is just another Rightist news outlet. I have stopped contributing to it. We desperately need Jon Stewart.

Whatever

Whatever

Jon Stewart doesn't seem to

Jon Stewart doesn't seem to have a problem shedding light in the dark areas the rest of the media won't touch. For this reason, I am a fan. He is TRULY a great American.

Jon Daily and Stephen

Jon Daily and Stephen Colbert are national heroes. But it's a sad state of affairs when the most popular and CREDIBLE journalist/s on television are FAUX journalists. When the best news we can get is satire, reality has in fact become stranger than fiction!

Dare I say as a crusty old

Dare I say as a crusty old liberal of 65 who does think Jon is getting a little too cute in his silly moves these days.... ...that I think the messages he gets out to young people about the hypocrisy of the corporate media and the venality of corporations... ...connects to them and their sensibilities more all the logical, well-reasoned and beautifully written columns by you, Greenwald, Josh M, digby and Hamsher...I read them all and appreciate your wonderful work too. But if young children, teenagers, and twenty and thirty somethings get some good progressive political spin along with the fun and laughs...then Bless the Daily Show and the Colbert Show. ...and Satire has a long history, going back to the Chaucer, Jonathan Swift...and the many writers and artists since then who use satire to mock the status quo. And John, you're starting to sound like an angry old guy yelling get off my lawn.

The problem with the Daily

The problem with the Daily Show is that there is very little 'there' there (to a paraphrase a former president). The show has very little real content. My favorite recent example is last month, a few days after the Georgians invaded south Osettia, half the show was devoted to the Georgian crisis. Yet the majority of that segment was devoted to a completely inane skit where the 'faux' reporter did/said nothing other than add TBLI (as Tblissi…) to everyword that he said, because this supposedly very foreign combination of letters was supposed to be funny. First, it wasn't funny. Second, there was absolutely no news content. And therefore they wasted that air time (and my time) rather than devoting it to mentioning the fact that McCain's main Foreign Policy advisor is a Lobbyist for the state of Georgia. I guess that 'news' was too 'BORING'…

The problem that no one will

The problem that no one will address is why is Fox News is taken seriously at all. The reason we need Stewart, even though he has a disturbing tendency to truckle to Neo-con guests himself. Colbert has dealt with the Fox News situation by turning his show into a loose (very loose) parody of a Fox News program. The MSM feel the need to compete with Fox, who has disturbingly high ratings among the part of America that can't think for itself and wants reasons to hate progress and social concerns. I don't think Fox would be allowed to broadcast, if it was an over the air network. This probably explains why Fox does not have nationwide news on its over the air programming. I might add to your list of MSM, not only PBS, but the New Yorker, which is apparently afraid that if it speaks out too clearly on issues, it will be attacked by the NTY Times and its Neo-cons. As for PBS, once I saw Juan Williams and Mare Eliason as regulars on Fox News I quit tuning in to PBS and NPR. One thing I agree with all of you on is that news reporters have all become empty talking heads. I take none of them seriously. This is why I appreciate TO.

Don't these public airways

Don't these public airways come up for re-licensing every once in awhile, or has Bushco's crew done away with that regulation of the FCC? What say the next time ABC, CBS, or the Peacock come up for a review, we, the OWNERS of those airways, deny them another pass to continue their fakery unless they agree to commit to honest reporting free from the restraints of their corporate owners wishes? "If all printers (and the rest of the media*) were determined not to print anything till they were sure it would offend nobody, there would be very little (of value to anyone*) printed." B. Franklin *My additions

John Stewart Stephen

John Stewart Stephen Colbert, RANDI RHODES, Thom Hartman, Stephanie Miller, Mike Malloy and Rachel Maddow are our gift of truth, with a big T and a lot of laughs. I think I would be in a straight jacket if I knew the truth and fallacies weren't being exposed OBAMA/BIDEN PLEASE!!!!!

Remember Dan Rather? His

Remember Dan Rather? His career was destroyed when he reported what everyone knew to be the truth about George W. Bush in the heat of the 2004 campaign. His corporate bosses and conservative detractors insisted he was fired because he failed to properly vet a single memo, but we all know the real reason: Dan simply went too far, he was no longer a reliable employee. The rest of his corporate media co-workers took note and realized what might happen to them if they didn't get with the program. That's how things work in corporate America: the most-prized quality...above competence, honesty or intelligence...is absolute loyalty.

Looks like you didn't post

Looks like you didn't post my remark, and the way you jam all comments into a solid block of copy shows your contempt for the people who leave messages here....no one reads dense blocks of type like this.... Peace and Love, Carl

What Walter Cronkite and his

What Walter Cronkite and his ilk didn' t have to go up against was a mad-dog, rabid christianist right, that raises such a stink at every little thing that doesn't go their way that everyone in MSM gets all worried and backs down. Look what WE let them do to a pretty damned good journalist like Dan Rather. These people aren't christians, they are christianists, who use the vicious parts of the bible to do what they want--hate gays, then read it in there, hate justice, ignore it. Any christian would put lying higher up on their list of things to avoid. They make it a sacrament. Look what they are doing about 'lipstick' right now. Look who calls them out on it in the MSM. Look who doesn't. Support the ones that do. If there are any. If so, blog about them. Send letters and emails to everyone you know. We have to beat these cynical bastards, but not by being cynical bastards. If there's one thing I respect about Obama (and there are lots), it's that he is so reluctant to fight back in kind. If he merely defends himself, they go apeshit crying foul. Makes me sick.

During times of repression

During times of repression it is often the "court jesters" who are the only ones who can get away with criticizing those in power. Thank goodness for Stewart and Colbert.

Remember that the Right came

Remember that the Right came perilously close to neutering NPR a few years back. Without public radio, who are still beholden to corporations, albeit in different ways, we would have no real contemporary journalism left. Then again, the guys at McClatchy seem to get it right much of the time. And "Rolling Stone" sometimes gets the story right. Mother Jones. TNR. The Atlantic Monthly... Come to think of it, maybe the failings are not in the corporate media structure at all, but in the public. In America we're like little kids sometimes - we like sweets, and skipping our vegetables. Our addiction to diversion and escape may be our doom. Which is worse - totalitarian capitalist censorship or a jaded, apathetic citizenry? come see me at www.guntotingliberal.blogspot.com for more insights. Bang! The pachyderm goes down!

Folks, just like government,

Folks, just like government, we get the media we deserve. Now excuse me while I switch channels back to American Idol and finish my Big Mac. Sara Palin was on Dancing With The Stars last year, wasn't she? Great reason to vote McCain/Palin in November. Four more years of what we deserve....

For those that worship at

For those that worship at the alter of the soft-core propaganda of NRP, I offer you this from William Blum. http://members5.boardhost.com/medialens/msg/1220869704.html

I love the Daily Show. It's

I love the Daily Show. It's better than anti-depressants, which is what I'd need if it weren't for Jon Stewart. If the news gets me down, I watch Jon and I feel like I have an ally -- someone who is as outraged as I am but says it in a way that can make me laugh. He is also informative in a way that only a show with a comedy sub-text could allow. I'm old enough to remember the Smother's Brothers. They and now Jon provide a valuable service -- biting commentary while keeping us all from the depths of despair.

Some of you need to listen

Some of you need to listen to Air America radio. You can do so on the internet, or via XM or Sirius, or( some) local progressive radio stations, or by subscription which gives you the podcast of the shows without commercials. It's addictive, and it's good for the soul, and for my sanity. I make room in my day for Thom Hartmann (Air America), Ed Schultz, Olbermann, Rachel Maddow (both Air America and MSNBC), Ron Reagan, Robert Kennedy Jr., Caura Flanders, and other heartwarming progressives. They give me hope. They tell me I'm not alone. I stay away from the corporate media, and NPR, except for, occasionally, C-Span. And of course, Truthout, which has been a beacon of hope from the darkest days of this administration.

If we elect Obama, he will

If we elect Obama, he will have the power to select the FCC commissioners who will work on equitable allocation of the airwaves, OUR publicly-owned airwaves, and make the TV and radio offerings more progressive and less partisan or religious or so favorable to sports (sports=the opium of the people).

Isn't it funny that what

Isn't it funny that what they envy most is his freedom? Perhaps one day they will figure out what that word means.

When's the last time y'all

When's the last time y'all tried deluging the major networks, and FCC commission with letters and e-mails and text messages? It may not do any good, but then again, if you don't try, maybe you need to stop whinging about it. I already do it haphazardly, but if anyone knows of a petition site, or some sort of national co-ordinators on the subject, I'm sure we would all appreciate the URL. The Right-Wingnuts are badgering any remaining left-leaning media as we speak. Get off your asses and start shoveling it back at them! Make it a daily or at least weekly ritual, proselytize your friends about it, and get them writing, too! I'm sure that the Right-Wingers get told that GAWD wants them to hassle left-leaning media, but what will it take to get OUR side motivated? Are you sad about the state of media? Are you angry? Are you depressed? Depression is anger in drag! Grab your keyboards, and give 'em HELL! Thank you very much.

What is the point of this

What is the point of this article? Corporate media stinks and it's Jon Stewart's fault? Jon Stewart is our Trickster, our Coyote, our Wise Fool.

The MSM strives to be "fair

The MSM strives to be "fair and balanced". And in a way it is. It would work if the democrats and republicans acted in similar ways. But when the right mixes outright lies with outrageous and illegal behavior, and the Democrats state a nice neutral centrist position, the media reports both sides, and implies that the truth is somewhere in between. For instance, if Palin lied about not wanting the bridge to nowhere, what is in fact reported is that she states that she was against it. Perhaps some Democrat will say the truth, but it will only be shown as a he-said she-said. And since she mentioned it first, why would she be lying about it? The thing about Jon Stewart is that he will show before and after videos of people contradicting themselves and have his audience laugh at the hypocritical bastards. What the NYT, NPR, CNN, etc, should do is state somberly that such and such has lied, or is being hypocritical, etc. But they are afraid of being attacked. Everyone is afraid in America now. It is a cowed little country.

The hard facts and contrasts

The hard facts and contrasts presented by the Daily Show are not "cloying", but Jon Stewart's cutesy pie act sometimes is. Colbert is self-aggrandizing but very effectively satirical.

yahoo news is pulling up

What to do?Discuss the news.Discuss the facts.Talk politics.Talk about religion.Change minds.Talk to older people who will vote republican just because their dad was a republican.Talk to your neighbors, your barber, your mechanic, your grocer, your postman.Donate $25 to the Obama campaign.Talk to your family.Inform people. What brought about our initial revolution were the small group discussions held in the local pubs.Create discussions about the perverse nature of mainstream media.Talk.And then talk some more.Share your knowledge and opinions. These are things that we can do every day.I talked to a fellow lsat night who told me that Obama was a muslim!I corrected him.We have about 50 days left to share our knowledge. After that ,we might be in for four more years of republican arrogance and deception.

Some of us still yearn for

Some of us still yearn for the Smothers Brothers, whose comedy hour opened on CBS early in 1967. Tom and Dick really pushed the envelope when it came to being outspoken on issues of the day--and also were funny as hell at the same time. They were very much in tune with the times, didn't hesitate to assault the political establishment and opposed the Vietnam war. One regular, Pat Paulsen, mounted a run for the presidency. The program had a lot in common with today's Daily Show. They also had an ongoing feud with their own network over acceptable program content. They finally were summarily thrown off the air by the network on April 4, 1969. Go, Jon Stewart! Go, Stephen Colbert!

Do what Gandhi demonstrated:

Do what Gandhi demonstrated: non-cooperation with the forces of tyranny! Boycott!!! Stop turning on your TVs to these mass media stations, Educate your friends and begin a local movement to boycott. Take away their financial base and you remove there power and presence in our society...it's that simple! I don't watch any TV and I get my news from the internet with Sites like Truthout and Common Dreams and Democracy etc.

To Another Peasant: I tend

To Another Peasant: I tend to like like your posts, and want to let you know I agree with you whole heartedly on this one. I do write in to Brian Williams and have posted on his blog (under a different name) about important events that get ignored on NBC (like impeachment resolutions!). I have written the FCC and complained about FOX, but was probably the lone wolf crying in the distance on that. I could write more and should! I am often tempted to leave a very lefty note on a blog where the ring-nuts have gone all out, but that is peeing on a forest fire; a hopeless waste of time. I like Stewart's show well enough, it's funny, but because it is 'humor' he can get by with it and everyone can pat him on the head and ignore him afterwards. I agree we must write to these jerks, but I think it may be more important to read and support sites like TruthOut and all the other similar web sources that actually do show both before and after "pictures," like Stewart, but with a serious tone. To be honest, I don't go to MSM sources for anything other than my daily serving of amazed amusement at how people can just bald face lie! Once we learn who pays these msm "journalists," we know where the limits of their freedom to report are drawn. Who pays TO? (We do, or well, I do, and frankly all y'all ought to send them some money too, if you haven't yet.) The point is that the limits to which TO can report are so much broader because we pay for their services, not corporations with a bottom line agenda. I appreciate my news without all the advertising as a side benefit. What I think we should do: write the msm like crazy and ignore them as much as possible until they straighten up, and send our piddly "newspaper" money to the alternatives we trust instead of buying a USA today. For other ways to help, there is a petition site, Care2 that has all kinds of petitions and mailing lists and there are some very good organizations working on media issues. Lots of us are doing great work and we must realize and remember that most people are good and will work together for the common good. You can find them on Care2 and the orgs you contact; usually signing a petition will give you the option of joining the mailing list.

Its NOT just the corporate

Its NOT just the corporate media... After all the Daily show isn't put out in a ZINE by five people in their basement. The dichotomy between "corporate media" and "alternative media" is often a false one. This site often follows the same pattern in terms of dry facts, scoops, and tidbits from the beltway without broader context and without explanation. What the Daily show does that's so attractive is state facts....and then discusses what those facts mean in a way that the people can understand and cuts through the pseudo journalistic bull. Corporate media AND Truthout tend to put the facts out there...this law, that person testified before congress...this statistic etc etc etc but fails to fill in the blanks. Compare the BBC news America to Corporate media OR Truthout/Alternet etc etc. John Stewart is more like the BBC and PBS documentary shows like Frontline and Now..why? The purpose of the fourth estate is to help the people understand their reality so they can keep power in check. Something which dry facts don't always do. Often when I read articles on Truthout I'm left saying... "ok..that's interesting. But whats the point? Whats the big picture? What does it MEAN"

Here is the NYT statement

Here is the NYT statement that's the basis of your editorial: "...and they've (The Daily Show) done so IN WAYS that the straight news shows cannot, speaking truth to power, in blunt, sometimes PROFANE words, while using SATIRE and PLAYFUL LOONINESS...." And you ask the straight news shows "why not?" Because we want our comedy to be playful, looney, and maybe profane, and we want our straight news to be serious-- not crazy nor satirical. We want reporting on various viewpoints, which allows us to find the truth. So you give us news, lots of it, and we'll act on it. The Daily Show works because they give us MORE news on a topic than the straight news does, and that's the real question: why?

I reiterate: This electoral

I reiterate: This electoral campaign has not merely devolved into, descended into a carnival side show, it has been actively side-showed by the rupert machine. This is no longer America, it is Oceania and big brother runs both sides of every show here from sea to shining sea, from Times to Tribune, from the NotALehrer Show to the Daily Show.

It is no wonder that Jon

It is no wonder that Jon Stewart is so popular! They say what the majority of the people would like to if given the chance. The regular news asks questions that many of us do not care about. Things like Sara Palin would simply disappear were it not for the press turning it into a media circus. The fact that a totally unqualified woman who has many questionable aspects to her name, is commanding more air time than the candidates is absolutely absurd. That time would be better spent addressing the issues. It is unbelievable that McCain has made it this far and no one in the mainstream media has forced him to answer questions about issues. No one has refused to accept pre-planned speeches that skirt the issues and interrupted him when he attempts to do this. The Press is a joke. They do not even know the meaning of the word journalism. Sensationalism yes, Journalism no! So as long as the Mainstream media continues to be a joke, we will get our news from a comedian!

Try comparing the news in

Try comparing the news in the Greenville Sc News with what one can read on line in places like Truthout, the ACLU, and many of the other more mainstream "alternative" news sources and one wonders if we live in the same country or the same century. -- the death of The News Media as we know it. No more controversy -- what we get is tripe like Fox News and Rush pretending to be observers of the world.

Mr. Solomon, what is it that

Mr. Solomon, what is it that you find so "sickening"? Is it the fact that, unlike "serious" journalists, Jon Stewart actually employs archived facts, placed in a context larger than a bumper sticker, to call the Republican McMedia Machine on their endless lies? Or is it merely the notion, apparently so puzzling to the Berkeley contingent, that a sense of humor is for some reason worth maintaining?

I get much information from

I get much information from Funny Times, a newspaper of political cartoons and articles. The Hightower Lowdown is ironical and stuffed full of nourishing facts. Of course this needs to be fleshed out with substantive, clear writing. The abdication and co option of the forth estate in Europe let Hitler roll across Poland without a heads-up. Humor may zing past stunted attention spans in ways substantive media can't. While I don't watch TV, listen to radio, read my cities pusillanimous faux newspapers, information must be presented in the widest variety of forums to catch the ear of as many as possible. And lets shed our timidity and call the religion of the right what it is- hateful.

Norman Solomon you say,

Norman Solomon you say, (quote) "viewers hold faux "news anchor" Stewart in higher esteem as a journalist than the "real" ones at the top of the media pack, " Pray tell, who are the "real journalists" on the MSM channels? Please name one, two? Until you get rid of Murdoch there will be NO real journalists.

Someone should do a survey,

Someone should do a survey, anonymous or otherwise, of mainstream news reporters, anchors, etc., and ask how many of them are sick at heart because they are not allowed to investigate or report the truth. Who controls the media? It is not the reporters and anchors, that's for damn sure. I wonder how many of them have been fired for trying to tell the truth, and how many have quit in disgust because they can't tell the truth. Our own local newspaper is fine for what it is, just don't read it hoping to learn the truth about anything that is important. I need not mention any issues. You know what they are.

Jon Stewart deserves all

Jon Stewart deserves all this praise. And yes the real news media should be ashamed for not be tough enough to always expose the truth and hypocracy of our politicians and nation at large.

I love Stewart and Colbert.

I love Stewart and Colbert. If not for them, all msm news would be nothing but truthiness. For my part, I tune in to Olbermann, and now to Rachel Maddow on MSNBC to get my truth to power fix. Theirs are the only 2 shows, with the exception of Bill Moyers, that come even close to telling the truth to power.

Your commercial media owned

Your commercial media owned by "Powers that Be" are spoon feeding news, solely for self service. You are only told anything on a need to know basis. You are sheep, following the billy goat to slaughter. Jon is a breath of fresh air!! If I really am curious about what is happening I will listen to him first, because he is able to weed out the lies and make the truth less hurtful by a bit of humor. If more Americans would listen to Jon for the truth you would have fun and in the process realize his expletives WTF is a wake up call.

"The hard facts and

"The hard facts and contrasts presented by the Daily Show are not "cloying", but Jon Stewart's cutesy pie act sometimes is. Colbert is self-aggrandizing but very effectively satirical." Shit, now I get it.

JON STEWART IS A NATIONAL

JON STEWART IS A NATIONAL TREASURE. When will they give him an HOUR???? Go Daily Show!

The situation in the MSM is

The situation in the MSM is very easy to analyze and understand. Here are the fundamental lessons: 1. The overriding purpose of all broadcasting is NOT communicating information -- it's SELLING the products of the sponsors in return for their investment of money for air time. 2. The easiest way to get the maximum attention from listeners is by ENTERTAINMENT. Therefore all content must be ENTERTAINING, including the "breaks" and whatever just happens to be news. Political news is especially vulnerable to the entertainment mantra. 3. Thus the only way to counteract the simplistic, superficial, jazzed-up trash that now passes for news is by MORE ENTERTAINMENT -- hence Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert, and other entertainers who actually do a better job on the news than the "real" journalists. Enjoy -- they're our only hope.

I love all these comments.

I love all these comments. I second the comment above praising: Daily Show, Colbert, Olberman, and Moyers.

Last year, an episode of

Last year, an episode of Family Guy acknowledged the status of Jon Stewart. Mort, the pharmacist, was startled by a scarecrow (dressed in Nazi regalia- literally referenced to by the main character, Peter, as a "Scarejew"). As Mort ran down the street, panting, he yelled "Hide Jon Stewart- he's our Most Important Jew!" Whatever happened to the Chet Huntleys, the Walter Cronkhites or the Harry Reasoners of the world? When the newsmedia shows such extreme bias toward a particular party, then the nation should be screaming to restore the "Fairness Doctrine" over all the electronic media.

I feel your angst, but

I feel your angst, but sometimes when facts are presented in a humorous light, they just hit home harder. There could be worse things than Stewart and Colbert. Stop taking yourself so seriously. The word has to get out there no matter who is doing it.
