Editor's Note: Historically a John McCain supporter, conservative journalist and blogger Andrew Sullivan takes on the issue of John McCain's integrity as he strives to win the presidency. - vh/TO

For me, this surreal moment - like the entire surrealism of the past ten days - is not really about Sarah Palin or Barack Obama or pigs or fish or lipstick. It's about John McCain. The one thing I always thought I knew about him is that he is a decent and honest person. When he knows, as every sane person must, that Obama did not in any conceivable sense mean that Sarah Palin is a pig, what did he do? Did he come out and say so and end this charade? Or did he acquiesce in and thereby enable the mindless Rovianism that is now the core feature of his campaign?

So far, he has let us all down. My guess is he will continue to do so. And that decision, for my part, ends whatever respect I once had for him. On core moral issues, where this man knew what the right thing was, and had to pick between good and evil, he chose evil. When he knew that George W. Bush's war in Iraq was a fiasco and catastrophe, and before Donald Rumsfeld quit, McCain endorsed George W. Bush against his fellow Vietnam vet, John Kerry in 2004. By that decision, McCain lost any credibility that he can ever put country first. He put party first and his own career first ahead of what he knew was best for the country.

And when the Senate and House voted overwhelmingly to condemn and end the torture regime of Bush and Cheney in 2006, McCain again had a clear choice between good and evil, and chose evil.

He capitulated and enshrined torture as the policy of the United States, by allowing the CIA to use techniques as bad as and worse than the torture inflicted on him in Vietnam. He gave the war criminals in the White House retroactive immunity against the prosecution they so richly deserve. The enormity of this moral betrayal, this betrayal of his country's honor, has yet to sink in. But for my part, it now makes much more sense. He is not the man I thought he was.

And when he had the chance to engage in a real and substantive debate against the most talented politician of the next generation in a fall campaign where vital issues are at stake, what did McCain do? He began his general campaign with a series of grotesque, trivial and absurd MTV-style attacks on Obama's virtues and implied disgusting things about his opponent's patriotism.

And then, because he could see he was going to lose, ten days ago, he threw caution to the wind and with no vetting whatsoever, picked a woman who, by her decision to endure her own eight-month pregnancy of a Down Syndrome child in public, that he was going to reignite the culture war as a last stand against Obama. That's all that is happening right now: a massive bump in the enthusiasm of the Christianist base. This is pure Rove.

Yes, McCain made a decision that revealed many appalling things about him. In the end, his final concern is not national security. No one who cares about national security would pick as vice-president someone who knows nothing about it as his replacement. No one who cares about this country's safety would gamble the security of the world on a total unknown because she polled well with the Christianist base. No person who truly believed that the surge was integral to this country's national security would pick as his veep candidate a woman who, so far as we can tell anything, opposed it at the time.

McCain has demonstrated in the last two months that he does not have the character to be president of the United States. And that is why it is more important than ever to ensure that Barack Obama is the next president. The alternative is now unthinkable. And McCain - no one else - has proved it.

To hear the plain truth

To hear the plain truth spoken is like being pulled from the muck of the daily slime and given a cleansing shower. The idea of a hockey Mom finding herself as the leader of the most powerful nation on earth boggles the mind. The McCain cynicism is complete.

Bravo, well said Mr Sullivan!

Bravo, well said Mr Sullivan!

A-typical Conservative:

A-typical Conservative: Republican who sees through the lies and nonsense of the right-wing mentality and admits it. Typical Conservative: Someone in denial about the above to the point of either irrationality or Machiavellian stool-pigeonry. Andrew, you have shown us colors of both. As far as point one, what took you so long to see what is so obvious to many...for a long time. Conservatives -- regardless of rhetoric -- are amoral powermongers, the worst kind. Fascists today basically. Didn't we all fight a big war against this not-so-long-ago???

Thanks Andrew for your

Thanks Andrew for your passionate and very accurate portrayal of McCain and Palin. I wonder how anyone could ever be fooled by this clown of an actor....I guess it's the hollywood/mass media crowd that is infatuated by the inflated and grotesque remarks, spins, and lies that issue from the mouth of this 'hollow' senator and his fundamentalist running mate!

Back in 2000 I thought that

Back in 2000 I thought that McCain was a very good candidate and might have even voted for him then but he has morphed into a Bush clone over the past 8 years. It's sad because at one time he really was better than the rest.

I agree completely. I

I agree completely. I predict that the BoomBoom/Gidget administration is going to make the last 7 1/2 years look good in comparison.

Cheers to Andrew Sullivan

Cheers to Andrew Sullivan for this article! Thank you for speaking the truth! Hopefully many more conservative McCain supporters will read this and agree! It would be great to have all this new support for Obama! Let's join together to bring our country back to its glorious goodness!

I often support the views

I often support the views of Andrew but I must express my firm view. In my view neither Obama or McCain are in tune with the issues which have harmed our nation. As a member of the GOP I would have supported Obama for his ealier plan to remove our troops from Iraq within 90 days but he has flip-flopped. I stand firm with Ron Paul and will not vote for McBama. Instead I will vote for Barr or Chuck Balkwin.

Like Andrew, I'm very

Like Andrew, I'm very disappointed by McCain's apparent loss of touch with reality, and integrity. I noted some days ago that Palin shot the pig, wiped off the lipstick and claimed it wasn't pork when she brought it home. IT IS AN OLD JOKE!! McCain's recent behavior is getting scarier as he seems to be out-Bushing Bush on another scarier, and less funny element, pig-headed rejection of truth or wisdom. Will he make the same pig headed decisions as president we've suffered under for the last eight years? I've always tried to maintain some sense of humor, but those behind McCain now making Rove look like a girl scout are really making it difficult.

It is good to see someone

It is good to see someone put the focus back on McCain's fitness to be president. His choice of Palin as a running mate, is just another indicator that he is not the kind of leader we need to follow the disaster of the last eight Bush years

Praise Allah, there are

Praise Allah, there are still some principled conservatives left ... to go along with a few libertarians. Quite obviously, Bush is not and never has been either, and now McCain has embraced the Rovian politics of diversion and division for his own personal power grab at the expense of this nation. When is the mainstream media going to awaken and see that the coffee we are smelling is still that Rovian brand found to taste so vile for the past eight years.

Well said Andrew! For

Well said Andrew! For me, all my respect for John McCain evaporated when I saw the "Obama teaches sex to Kindergarden childen" ad. The ad ends with - " I'm John McCain and I approve this message" An ad that so blatantly lies, twists the truth, attacks, and is just plain pervasively feeding on fear (and obviously the work of Karl Rove) and then gets the thumbs up from this supposedly honorable man - wow - I have no respect for a man who would knowingly approve such lies. To me it means that he will do anything to try and get elected to the highest office in the land - even if it includes lying, deceit, attack and slander. Not a man I would ever trust with making decisions for my family or for my country. Obama has run a clean campaign even in the face of this muck - that tells me more about his honor and integrity than all of McCains empty words about how great of an american he is. Actions - not words. Obama is the change I can believe in - McCain would be just fruitless believing that he can change.

The talent of the Republican

The talent of the Republican party in this presidential campaign has been to break their own records as to how low they can stoop in misrepresenting their opponents, lying about their record and cavalierly disregarding the crises the Bush administration have thrown us into. McCain's true colors are coming out, and folks, they ain't so red, white and blue. He's a two-faced opportunist with no shame whatsoever. No wonder the American people are disgusted with the political system.

Why I am voting Obama over

Why I am voting Obama over McCain Because my government promised if I or my fellow veterans were injured from a bullet or a bomb or psychological injury of war that they would do everything in their power to make us whole. Not with rationed care or outsourced care or underfunded hospitals but with state-of-the-art care, state-of-the-art facilities, staffed by clinicians who are specially trained to understand the war veteran and their needs. Barak Obama understands this promise and even though he's never served in the military he is the only presidential candidate who has taken up the cause of veterans not as a political ploy but as a way to ensure we keep the promise. He understands it's a national security issue that was made clear by the first President of the United States George Washington. The willingness of future generations to serve in our military will be directly dependent upon how we have treated those who have served in the past. John McCain is awol on veterans care and intends to give each veteran a plastic credit card and privatize VA health care. This is also a Rove /Bush idea and represents how overtaken he is by the Republican party he claims he will fix. He will send our veterans to clinicians who have no formal training in the many unique needs that returning veterans have. What kinds of needs am I talking about? Unique endemic diseases that only occur in Iraq, traumatic brain injuries as a result of IED's, psychological injuries as a result of witnessing, participating and experiencing the wartime environment. It's called the Department of Veterans Affairs because the doctors and staff who work there are supposed to be subject matter experts in the wounds of war. Republicans and John McCain want to save money and he's going to do it by rationing and outsourcing your care, he's already participated in undermining the VA by not fully funding its needs for years. This means the VA cannot plan for anticipated wounded because they barely have enough money to take care of those from previous wars much less this new generation. John McCain is willing to deficit spend $10 billion a month in Iraq but is not willing to deficit spend on taking care of those who are injured. I'm sorry that the war is costing so much but I refuse to believe that you can send men and women to war and scrimp on their medical care when they come home. Senator Obama is going to change that. In the coming weeks and months leading to the election of the next president of the United States I encourage all veterans to look closely at the voting records of both Senator McCain and Senator Obama. Their respective records speak volumes beyond the campaign slogans of "Country First" or "Change You Can Believe In". I can't believe in you Mr. McCain. Your Maverick image has been co-opted by the party you want to reform. Your record on veterans issues demonstrates to me that you have forgotten about the men and women who served with you and are serving now. Your military service is honored, your Congressional record is there for America to judge. Your ambition is obvious. You will do and say anything to win. The facts speak for themselves.

This is all the more reason

This is all the more reason for us to elect Barack Obama. John McCain has let his country down with this final decision of his campaign--the non-vetted Vice-Presidential nominee. I'm sorry for you Mr. McCain. You do the devil's work.

Wow. This was tenth inning

Wow. This was tenth inning Red Sox vs Yankees Grandslam (with the Sox winning, of course). Now, I wonder if Mr. Sullivan will be invited on talk shows time and time again to say something like this, or will we get more "senior political analysts" from CNN who used to work for Reagan, Nixon and Ford.

And now, Mr. Sullivan - tell

And now, Mr. Sullivan - tell the world and tell the voters beyond the reach of The Atlantic !! Bravo !

I understand your idea of

I understand your idea of true journalism of stating both sides. And I do see your point for a man who so strongly views international policy, would get Palin for V.P. who has little experience. However, this minor detail should not persuade you to change your vote to the opposing party. Obama has less international knowledge than McCain and did note vote on anything relevant when he was able to. Obama might look pretty now, but he seems very passive and easily manipulated but those bigger than him in office. He is simply a nice face on Oprah, and she has made it clear this is the race card, because her show is all about women power, but will not invite Palin on her show. She has lost a lot of viewers now...

It appears that a chance to

It appears that a chance to grab the ring after so many years in the trenches will do that to you. I'm not a member of what seems to have become the evangelist party rather than the conservative party, but I was looking forward to a more honorable campaign than we have seen in previous elections. The article sums up my own disappointments.

There was a time when decent

There was a time when decent politicians stood toe to toe and made their case for the public to weigh. This is how it's supposed to work. Yes, there have always been gamesmanship and dirty tricks, insults and exaggerations. Consortium News editor Robert Parry's recent piece, re-run on Truthout recently, described when this all went bad. Since 1969, when Nixon's win-at-any-cost methods prevailed and a war was prolonged with secret negotiations to deprive Lyndon Johnson of a positive political development, elections have become less and less about the needs of the people and more about sophisticated, cynical techniques to manipulate the electorate. Obama clearly wants the old-fashioned kind of election. He wants to talk about the issues, talk about what needs to be done and why, and then how. From McCain and Palin, we hear nothing but waves of irrelevant pandering to the standard symbols: The Troops, The Average Everyday American, The Moms with Children. But among those grand and empty speeches, all identical, all with chants and cheers in almost exactly the same places as if the audience has been rehearsed, there are no solutions, no details, nothing, none, nada. And time after time, we find that McCain has mostly voted against the interests of working and middle class families and the troops. He rejects every kind of support the troops really need, like better armor and vehicles and care when they return. And he defends these views with absurd arguments, like giving them better benefits upon leaving the military will encourage them to leave. At the same it, he shamelessly and repeatedly masturbates the public with his love for "Our Troops." People seem to say it every election. "This is the most important election in our lifetime;" or "time to update my passport." But this time, it's for real. The Republicans have had their chance -- eight years of fleecing the people and their treasury, lying to make war for profit, cutting taxes yet spending borrowed money at unprecedented levels with nary a veto until the Democrats gained a majority. Now, they offer a candidate they hated just a year ago, arm him with every aforementioned technique in their lengthy handbook and expect us to buy it. It's more than ridiculous. It is preposterous to the 10th power. I doubt Andrew Sullivan has suddenly become a Democrat. However, as anyone who has seen him on Maher or visited his blog knows he is a thoughtful guy. I believe he wants that pure debate, too, but knows he won't get it this year. I applaud him for stepping up.

The well earned kudos for

The well earned kudos for Andrew's perception and articulation have been said by others, better than I can say them. I will only add that Andrew nailed it...a perfect "10"!

I like Andrew Sullivan, I

I like Andrew Sullivan, I think he's very smart - but I seldom agree with him. On this occasion, I do. I find it extraordinarily important that a thinking conservative like Sullivan has seen through the charade that McCain and what has become of the Republican Party are foisting on the nation. Thank you, Andrew.

The real pig in this

The real pig in this discussion is none other than John McCain. I'm sorry, but he has used up his passes as far as I am concerned. Yes he was a POW and was tortured in Vietnam like hundreds of other POW's. That was admirable, but it was over 30 years ago. What has he done for us lately? He defined himself as a maverick, reformer. But really? Even his McCain Feingold reform fell far short and had plenty of loopholes fore the lobbyists to squeeze through. He now employs hundreds of them, and even his top campaign managers are lobbyists. He is a wolf in sheeps clothing hiding behind a woman's skirts and taking advantage of any extra votes he can suck out of unsuspecting women and religious right supporters. This man has a track record of being extremely sexist, having called his own wife the C word, offering her to bikers as a beauty contestant, and on and on. To say nothing of his ugly, evil jokes about Chelsea Clinton. On top of that, he is an empty suit, with no new ideas and no new direction to solve today's problems or give us a direction for the future. He offers nothing but Rovian dirty tricks, lies, distrations and manipulations. If we elect the Republicans again, there truly is no hope for this country. God help us all.

It is tough for me to

It is tough for me to believe that Americans will go for Karl Rove tactics once again. Very sad day for America.

Clarity and logic. Thank

Clarity and logic. Thank you. I too noticed when McCain changed colors. He was extremely critical of Bush and the war... and then, someone must have whispered something in his ear... and then he got right in line. Every time he has done something wrong (S&L scandal, abandoning first wife after auto accident injuries, etc.) he has apologized in such an upright way, that he has fooled a lot of people. He is about as believable as the guy who beats his wife and then cries to see her injuries, and takes her out to dinner and treats her like a princess... until the next time! No, I don't trust this man.

What is the deal with

What is the deal with McCain's eyes? (And I mean that seriously.) Somebody commented on the crazed look he has come to have, and watching him at the convention, I have to agree. When he speaks into the camera, he really looks more than a bit demented. Why? The best I can postulate is that his pupils are chronically dilated. I tried to find a good close-up portrait in the RNC website, but none really show his eyes (or his face) clearly. The picture here sort of shows them, but not the pupils. So, any ideas? Medication? Mini-strokes, as some of suggested he has suffered? Am I completely off-base? What? Seems like it might be important. Oh, and thank you Andrew Sullivan.

You state with clarity what

You state with clarity what I hoped some person of stature would state for all the world to hear.Your words see his agenda as being only for him, for me, me, for me forever, not for the good of the country The negative words that have been spilling out of me all day about McCain's madness are now washed away. Thank you Andrew for restoring and raising the executive roles of the United States President and Vice President to their rightful place. Every bone in my body and beat of my heart thanks you.You spoke as an honest believer in our Constitution without party partisanship. You speak the truth.

Mr. Sullivan has authored

Mr. Sullivan has authored the most succinct and accurate appraisal of John McCain, the Mcchurian candidate that has yet or will ever be written. Let's just hope it become the epitaph of the United States of America.

Better late than never Mr.

Better late than never Mr. Sullivan. It has been obvious to me since Nixon that Republicans DON'T KNOW HOW TO GOVERN. Whenever Democrats arise that want to distribute the wealth and do good by the people, they get slimed and ridiculed and sometimes killed. The criminals that were spawned during Nixon's era have been and are running our country down to this day. REPUBLICANS HAVE NO HONOR OR LOVE OF THIS COUNTRY, they only pretend. The American flag will be covered in feces should McBUSH win, dies in office and Pigpalin becomes POTUS. Heaven help us!!!

McCain will only win through

McCain will only win through voter fraud. But that has happened before. The MSM needs to put this on the radar of all Americans to make it that much more difficult for the repugs to pull it off

I feel sorry for John

I feel sorry for John McCain. His wife owns all the property in the marriage. Even the children have a percentage of her father's company, but he doesn't. One might say that she wears the pants in the family. Now the Rove people are running his campaign and telling him what he can do and say. Yes, I really do feel sorry for him.

excellent. the author has

excellent. the author has more courage and moral fortitude than Sen. McCain has shown in many many years. Thank y ou for the wonderful truth --may it shine enough to save us!

Oprah did NOT say that she

Oprah did NOT say that she wouldn't have her on her show. That was a typical Drudge lie. It has absolutely been discredited.

The only requirement to be

The only requirement to be installed as president is to follow orders-- from Tel Aviv.

Thank you to Andrew

Thank you to Andrew Sullivan, He called the Republican base the "Christianist base". The should be called the Christian Taliban.

In 2000 I had respect for

In 2000 I had respect for McCain, now only contempt. Karl Rove is running his campaign. No need to say anymore. Mr. Sullivan thanks you nailed it. Obama 08

I just finished reading the

I just finished reading the book "The Wrecking Crew -- how conservatives rule", by Thomas Frank, and it is a profoundly depressing book. It illustrates how conservatives ("wingers", as he calls them) will stop at NOTHING to win, just as in sports. John McCain has understood that the only way he can win is by cheating, lying, and misleading. His choice of a bimbo for second-in-command should outrage the military that used to respect him, for his so-called "courage", and devotion to "national security". John McCain is going to find out that the American voters aren't THAT dumb. Yes, they watch the TeeVee commercials, but those that truly get up to vote on November 4th will not be the dummies who fall for these bogus commercials. Obama-Biden '08, the decent choice, the only ticket that will truly produce CHANGE.

This is getting so

This is getting so ridiculous, I could just sit and cry. I'll see this on Truthout. Others will see it in the Atlantic. Where will the football fans, the Survivor fans, the readers of People Magazine see it? Thank you, Mr. Sullivan. For a few years now, I've had to keep on reminding myself that principled Republicans, principled conservatives, really do exist in the world. You've reminded me again. All day today, I've wanted to run around and tell people that Sarah and Todd Palin are not heroes, though having Trig will -- I hope -- be a joy to them (as my sister is to our family). Carting him around like a badge of sainthood does that child no honor. It's self-aggrandizing and cynical. And sad. So is all this distraction about lipstick. So is the silliness about teaching "comprehensive sex education" to kindergarteners -- didn't they know that you say the word sex within a hundred yards of kids and you can get so many of the know-nothings to rally around. That's sad, too. There's a veteran who wrote above about how Sen. Obama will do right by our returning troops, knowing that taking care of the military is part of how we keep our nation safe. Well, that's true. But taking care of the military is also part of how we behave honorably -- for no other reason. Just because when you ask so much of people, and they rise to the occasion, you do right by them. Period. Sen. McCain -- to my everlasting amazement! -- has forgotten that. This whole election season has taken such a sorry turn, and Mr. Sullivan, you have nailed the reason. Eight years ago, Sen. McCain wanted to be president. Powerful people in his part turned on him so viciously, I think even he was taken completely by surprise, was shaken to his roots. That they would do that to HIM, of all candidates. But he wanted the presidency that badly that in 2004, he curried favor. And now, when it's do or die time -- this is his last possible chance to achieve the White House -- he'll do anything to get it. Anything. God, this is so sad. How do we get the people of our country to realize this. They've circled their wagons and don't realize how damaged he is. How do we wake them up. Before it's too late?

Standing at my desk by the

Standing at my desk by the end of your piece. Well done!

I've never lived in a world

I've never lived in a world where Rep and Dems could have an honest, hard-nosed, American debate about the future of our great country. I still hope- It ain't gonna happen this year. McCain v.2000 might have encouraged this to happen. McBush v.2008, however, represents the lowest of the low road politics, someone who will open the Pandora's box of Rove gutterball politics and hope that he isn't made dirty by it. If McCain can so easily morph into McBush, then our mutual moral condemnation of the current crop of Rep leaders is assured in the annals of history.

Like many others, I

Like many others, I preferred John McCain in the 2000 primaries. My interest eroded after he began sucking- up to George Bush. Since that time I have observed a person without a moral compass. His campaigning on his POW experience expressed to me he felt an entitlement for the Presidency. The man needs help, not a 4 year commitment to a high stress governmental position.

Not to sound cynical, but to

Not to sound cynical, but to be truthful there has not been one Republican since Nixon and Watergate who genuinely have principles and the true desire to work for the citizens of this country. Those GOP since are merely puppets for ones seeking to gain power and control over the market place and suppress the citizens. How truly sad, and even more, pitiful for the soldiers who suffered and died for a nation they believed deserved their sacrifice. Senator McCain may have once been that principled leader, learning difficult lessons from the POW experience. But he has sold his soul to the devil and that loss is truly heartbreaking.

I came to admire Barry

I came to admire Barry Goldwater as an honest man even as I strongly opposed many of his views. I thought perhaps John McCain was cut from the same cloth but he has lately shown his integrity to be no more than posture based on convenience.

If for no other reason (and

If for no other reason (and there are reasons aplenty), by his choice for a VP running mate John McCain has declared himself unfit for the presidency. Anyone that would put someone with Palin's limited experience and repeated poor judgment in the proverbial "heartbeat away" is unfit to serve in that capacity himself. He put his own obtuse ambition ahead of the nation's and the world's safety. Country first? My ass. Read this: http://www.truthout.org/article/the-hollow-man

Andrew Sullivan, you have

Andrew Sullivan, you have made my day! My heart has been sick for several days listening to the lies, falsehoods, and otherwise worthless comments coming from the media! Just when I want to think enough people in this country can truly see/hear what is truth, I am persuaded by some remark that no, most people are too dumb to get it! It would be such a treat to have an intelligent mind doing the thinking in the White House. Obama has that mind, he is thoughtful and deliberate in his assessments. We need him!

And the John McCain I

And the John McCain I thought I understood would not indulge in this strident inflaming of the stupid "red/blue" divide. He's not running this, folks. He didn't want VP Palin. He's going along, and for that he has lost whatever of my respect he retained. But this is definitely weird.

Would you like to see

Would you like to see McCain's idea of integrity? Watch this vid and pass it to anyone you know who thinks they can trust McCain enough to even consider voting for him: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GEtZlR3zp4c

Sad to say, despite Obama's

Sad to say, despite Obama's desire to unite Americans to try to undo the damage done by the Bush Administration, there really seem to be two Americas, so perhaps the Neocons have won after all... there are those who see exactly what is happening and are sickened by it... and those who will vote for McCain and/or Superstar Palin, for whatever reasons they have. It is heartening to read the words of a Republican with a conscience, who is publicly acknowledging what most of us have known for a long time, but really, most of the rest of the GOP seem to all be going along with the divide-and-conquer, stay-in-power-at-all-costs Neocon agenda for whatever scraps of this plundered nation they think they are entitled to. When are more Republicans going to speak out? When is the Christian Left which I have heard about lately ever going to sit down with their brethren on the Right who seem to think Palin is a gift from God and try to educate them? In reality she is just a cynical vote-getting tool who was obviously not McCain's first choice, but he caved in to whoever is giving him orders for his one last desperate shot at the Presidency, So much for a man of integrity. I am tired of hearing the Right saying that Palin is being attacked. We have a right to know as much as we can, as soon as we can, about a virtual unknown the Right thought they could slip in under our radar who might end up being President, the most powerful person in the world. Even as I type this, it seems like some sort of ludicrous nightmare. Her acceptance speech, her introduction to the American People, turned quickly into a string of attacks, for which she showed just as much zeal as she did talking about her children. Scary, and a real look at her vindictive nature. Do we want to risk someone in the White House who is proud of the enemies she has made? Doesn't America already have enough enemies? I am sick of feeling as though half of all Americans think I am their enemy because of the hateful and divisive speech of the Republicans. Unless they, too speak out, in this manner, I can only assume that they approve wholeheartedly of the direction their party is taking this nation. I am also tired of hearing that Democrats have 'no backbone.' I can think of nobody more spineless than the members of the Republican Party who have gone along with the mockery that is the Bush Administration for almost eight years, working against any legislations Democrats in Congress have tried to put through, while at the same time reaping benefits and being too cowardly to speak out, if there was any shred of conscience left in them. God help America if McCain is elected, or if those who he now answers to steal this election as well.

Bravo- After the hatchet job

Bravo- After the hatchet job that" Rove and company" inflicted on him in the last election its incredible that McCain could come crawling back to his party-which by some accounts he almost abandoned- like a whipped dog with nowhere else to go. And then rather then throwing caution to the wind and exhibiting some of his supposed political independence, he simply jettisoned his "values" -such as they were and joined this march of the damned in their quest to transform the USA into a religious dictatorship. But its not only John McCain, so many pundits who only a week ago laughed at his pick Sara Palin now glorify her as the second coming of Ronald Reagan in a skirt. And so eager are they to please, that as the economic crisis takes on proportions unseen since the Depression they have allowed the Republicans to reduce the public forum to something resembling a high school rank out contest. Security? The US is currently broke, bogged down in two wars, and as a result unable to contain the aggressions of the rejuvinated Russians. I suppose thats where Palin fits in. After all, with her experience living next door to them, she knows just what to do. "Mr. Putkin don't you go trying anything funny now or you'll have to deal with the Alaska National Guard."

Excellent article, Mr.

Excellent article, Mr. Sullivan. This took courage, considering the kind of abuse that no doubt awaits you from the far right idealogues and the American Taliban alike. Thank you, from a leftist that still believes in using rationality before superstition and partisan hysteria. To the respondent that claims that Barack Obama has no foreign policy experience, might I ask where you were when the pseudo-Texan cheerleader WITH NO FOREIGN POLICY EXPERIENCE was first running? At least Barack Obama knows how to speak English correctly, and does not have a history of drug and alcohol abuse to cloud his judgment. I for one would like to have a President that is smart enough to understand basic concepts, like scientific method, logic and reason, as well as the concept that you don't make friends with a nation by invading them using lies as excuses, and destroying their country. To the respondent that wonders about Senator McCain's eyes, I wonder the same thing, but I think it is a whole lot more likely to be PTSD. It often surfaces after many years, when the facade breaks down, and it would explain the sudden outbursts of anger and even rage that the Senator is well-documented for. I do not believe that anyone could go through imprisonment and duress for that long, and remain blissfully unaffected. I can feel sorry for him as a man, but I don't want him in the White House, with his finger on The Button, any more than I want his running mate in the same position. Her church teaches that they must all be ready to die for God at any time, and that the End Times are upon us. I'd rather not have her making that decision for the rest of us, with nuclear weapons, and I sincerely wish that the Democrats would point that out publicly.
