New York - The arrival of tens of millions of DVDs of a controversial film on doorsteps around the nation - but almost exclusively in election "swing states" - via newspaper home delivery continues this weekend, with explanatory articles and subscriber feedback appearing on some of the papers' Web sites.

The DVDs of the 60-minute film, made in 2005, and titled "Obsession: Radical Islam's War Against the West," arrived Saturday with, among other papers, the Charlotte Observer and the News & Observer in Raleigh, with delivery with the Miami Herald and other papers set for Sunday. (To watch a clip see link below.)

Other Florida papers to distribute it on Sunday included the major dailies in St. Petersburg, Tampa, Fort Myers and Orlando.

Despite some protests from Muslim and liberal activists, the newspapers - all hard hit by drops in ad revenue in recent months - have explained that the DVD does not violate their usual standards; see our exchange with The New York Times below. A spokesperson there said the Times last Sunday inserted 145,000 DVDs in its papers delivered in the following markets: Denver, Miami/Palm Beach, Tampa, Orlando, Detroit, Kansas City, St Louis, Cincinnati, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Milwaukee/Madison. Note: These are all in swing states.

The documentary showcases scenes of Muslim children being encouraged to become suicide bombers, interspersed with shots of Nazi rallies. "The threat of Radical Islam is the most important issue facing us today," reads the sleeve of the DVD. "But it's a topic that neither the presidential candidates nor the media are discussing openly. It's our responsibility to ensure we can all make an informed vote in November."

It was shown on Fox News just before the 2006 mid-term elections, and conservative activist David Horowitz screened the film on college campuses during 2007. An article at the group's site, www.radicalislam.org, all but endorsed John McCain this past week, then was pulled down. The DVD carries on-screen text near the outset that it is not indicting most Muslims.

An article at the site of the Morning-Call in Allentown, Pa. today reveals that it will be inserted in the Sunday paper there tomorrow. It continues: "A call to Clarion wasn't returned, but the nonprofit's spokesman, Gregory Ross, told the Harrisburg Patriot-News this week that 28 million copies of the DVD are being distributed nationwide throughout September. He said the intent is not to sway voters' opinions about the presidential candidates."

It has already been packaged with dozens of large papers, such as the Denver Post and Columbus Dispatch. Another article explaining the delivery runs online at the News & Observer.

E&P asked New York Times Co. spokeswoman Diane McNulty about the policy on this insert. She replied:

"We believe the broad principles of freedom of the press confer on us an obligation to keep our advertising columns as open as possible. Therefore our acceptance or rejection of an advertisement does not depend on whether it coincides with our editorial positions. In fact, there are many instances when we have published opinion advertisements that run counter to the stance we take on our own editorial pages.

"We do require that opinion advertisements include the name of the sponsoring organization and a mailing address or a telephone number. This enables our readers to communicate directly with the sponsor should they seek additional information or wish to express agreement or disagreement with the advertised message. This advertisement complied with these requirements. The address on the advertisement was The Clarion Fund, 255 West 36th Street Suite 800 New York, NY 10018."

Asked about the rate paid, she answered: "We do not disclose the rate any one advertiser pays."

This is not amenable to my

This is not amenable to my usual satirical treatment of NewsCorp outrages. So now the "New York Times" is taking an active role in facilitating the propaganda and fear tactics of the Rupert/RNC (inter alia) organization. Despicable. The last remnant of integrity at the Times is lost.

"Note: These are all in

"Note: These are all in swing states." Well, that's an opinion, and should be stated as such, not as fact. According to Zogby International's Polling data, as of my typing this, the Swing States are: Colorado, Indiana, New Mexico, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Pennsylvania & Virginia. And half the cities you listed aren't in those states.

Can we have a DVD

Can we have a DVD distributed that details the close ties between John McCain and Phil Gramm, and Gramm's role in the deregulation that has led directly to the meltdown we are witnessing in our economy? It would be instructive for voters to know that McCain's economic policies, while mirroring Bush's, would be worse, as he advocates even more tax cuts and the privatization of Social Security. Maybe the DVD could also have a segment detailing the corrosive effect that Bush's ( and McCain's) policies will have on relations with the Muslim world.

The simple fact is that

The simple fact is that anyone who pays can get an advertisement inserted in, and distributed via, newspapers. This should not suddenly impugn newspapers-- they just got a big ad buy is all. The fact that some people with money want every American to fear radical Islam is the point here. The question becomes whether or not there is adequate disclosure of who those people are, whether the people receiving the ad look under the hood to learn what those peoples' agenda is. As with the majority of political news coverage these days, this article and people reading it who have commented so far seem to be missing the forest for the trees. I sure hope voters are learning how to see through spin to the story behind the story- it seems we get the chance to practice every couple of seconds.

And how about a DVD

And how about a DVD "advertisement" detailing the 35 Articles of Impeachment submitted to the House by DK, and one explaining the massive illegal spying on American citizens, and one covering the illegal use of Pentagon yes-men as network TV "experts," and the missing 5 million emails, and - oh, how about a DVD that shows how we've already killed and maimed over a million "radical Islamists" (or innocent men, women and children, as is the case), or one showcasing Bush's heinous shift of trillions of ours and our children's money to "friends of the family," or... you get the idea. Come on, progs and libs - get your shit together and start pumping out the DVD "advertisements."

Who is "The Clarion Fund?"

Who is "The Clarion Fund?" Are they religious zealots of the Palin variety or another shill organization for Ari Fleitscher and his band of "Got to remind them of the Muslim Menace," gang? As for the link to the video, I don't need that, I need investigation into who is paying for this organization, they MUST BE A 527, so there MUST BE a declaration of who runs them and who they are and where their funds come from; THIS I WANT TO KNOW. As for this specious argument, ""We believe the broad principles of freedom of the press confer on us an obligation to keep our advertising columns as open as possible. Therefore our acceptance or rejection of an advertisement does not depend on whether it coincides with our editorial positions." OH? REALLY?? Do you take advertisements from The NAZI's organizing a hate rally at Strawberry Fields in Central Park? Do you accept advertising for "work at home" scams? All that does is certify the fact that you are a scam for endangering the lives of those who "read" your "news-->paper."

FROM THEIR WEB

FROM THEIR WEB PAGE: CLARION FUND, created in November 2006, is a non-profit, non-partisan organization whose mission is to educate Americans about issues of national security. Our primary focus is on the most urgent threat of radical Islam. By utilizing the following three mediums, Clarion Fund is helping Americans understand that the mainstream media is not adequately conveying the reality of radical Islam: • Documentary Film Production and Distribution (through 'Clarion Productions') • Online Education • College Outreach Clarion Fund, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) organization. We are independent and do not accept funding from the U.S. Government, political institutions, or foreign organizations. Here you go; give them a call: Clarion Fund - info@clarionfund.org (888) 610-2221 or (646) 308-1230 Doesn't the Patriot Act provide for the arrest of anyone conspiring to incite riot, or to influence public opinion? Isn't that exactly what the RNC Welcoming Committee was arrested for? Wasn't Amy Goodman arrested for exercising her freedom of speech rights?

Didn't the New York Times

Didn't the New York Times refuse to run an ad by Move On? What is going on here?

Last year, our 70 YO arts

Last year, our 70 YO arts organization had inserted 10k brochures in our local NYT. We were charged a dime each for the service. Does this help?

If The Clarion Fund is

If The Clarion Fund is indeed a 501c organization, then their tax-exempt status would be in jeopardy if they actually endorsed McCain. How about having some of your fine investigative reporters take this on. Who funds this outfit? I'm guesstimating, but still -- 10's of millions of DVDs at about $1 per DVD production and distribution costs? Who has that kind of money? We are talking about an ad campaign in newspapers that cost more than John McCain took in donations in August. The newspapers may say that it's a freedom-of-speech issue, but when General Motors or General Foods buys an ad, we know who funded it. We have a right to know who funded this. Uh, three guesses who dun it: Who has that kind of money? Who's going to miss a measly $50 million? Who wants its hands on mideast oil, and convincing the US Army to protect their oil sources is high on their agenda? How is this not a campaign contribution "in kind"? Who's kidding whom? And Praise God for Editor and Publisher. Notice that no other publication has covered this.

If you bothered to go to

If you bothered to go to their website, you'd see that it's mostly white papers by American Enterprise Institute flaks, there are a few very interesting bits concerning the plight of women in Islam, but always slanted to denigrate Western feminists. On the other hand, liberating Islamic women doesn't seem to be super-high on anyone's agenda in this country, which is lame, so they may have one point. One. On the other other hand, if this country had equal pay and equal rights for women, and didn't abuse or denigrate them based on gender, then American feminists wouldn't have any excuse not to work to liberate other women in the world, but Clarion's website doesn't address that major flaw in their own argument. They are arguing for a very conservative definition of women's liberation, but then again, anything is better than what radical Islam AND RADICAL CHRISTIANITY (which they never mention) currently have to offer women. They also have a lot of papers about weening ourselves off of foreign oil, because it supports terrorism. (TRUE, it supports it both in radical Islamic regimes, and in our own radical Christian regime.) The only paper that didn't look like a fat lot of fossil-fuel industry suck-up to me was one by a former NASA scientist, supporting the use of alcohol fuels from biomass. He may have a point for the near-term, but long-term? I KNOW it's all BS. We could power this entire country with current solar-based technology, if we just got busy and built it. The numbers don't lie, but the fossil-fuel industry toadies DO. So, basically, the whole Clarion site reeks of the political Right, trying to be sweet and reasonable about convincing you that radical, fundamentalist Islam is coming to get you, and modern, Western, crypto-fascism (-merger of State and Corporate power) is the only thing that can save you. Ignores the FACT that we've CREATED a lot of radicals in the Islamic world ourselves, through CIA interference and even overthrow of their more democratic governments, and recently, W's ever-widening world of war. -"Isn't it funny how people get angry when you blow the limbs off their kids?" I really only agree with one premise of the site, that fundamentalist Islam is a major threat to world peace. On the other hand, so is fundamentalist, Dominionist Christianity. And fundamentalist, Zionist Judaism. And radical conservative sects of Buddhism and Hinduism. What is it about religions, that the bigger they grow, the greater their tendency to become EVIL? Too bad that this country didn't remain the SECULAR beacon of Reason and Liberty that it promised to be at the start. Thomas Jefferson must be spinning in his grave.

The CD is also being sent

The CD is also being sent via the US Postal Service in Fl. In my family alone, (3 separate households), we've received 3 in one day, from Paid Permit No 49 Freeport NY 11520. No one in my family has viewed it because we feel that it is nothing but propaganda. We also resent getting spam in our mailboxes. The CD is an attempt to sway public opinion via fear. I suppose that the sender is hoping we are all ignorant . When in fact, the sender is insulting our intelligence. I did call Clarion and left a message that their scheme did not work in my family. Now the NYT's insults our intelligence by giving us a lame excuse as to why they aided and abetted in the propaganda machine. Free Speech, my arse. Because the NYT's has refused ads by progressives .We're not stupid and so stop insulting our intelligence .

When the NYTimes allowed the

When the NYTimes allowed the Clarion Fund to allocate the DVDs only into "swing states", they purposely joined in the propaganda machine. Remember, Sulzberger is the reason that William Kristol has an editorial slot at the paper, over the objections of many of the other journalists there.

Can we have a DVD that

Can we have a DVD that details the eviscerating effects caused by Fundamental Christians right here in the good old USA? Oh, I have a great idea, just send a copy Of "Jesus Camp". I have canceled my subscription to the Oregonian and encourage others to do the same. As we are well aware, the only power we have is where we spend our money, though even that seems in jeopardy.

Why the group distributed

Why the group distributed the dvd is not about domestic but foreign policy. it is about achieving more devastation and holocaust in the arab region. those who sponsored this dvd want to see all the arab regions being subservient to their Jewish state. they worry that Obama may not be just as willing to cause horrific destruction to the entire region to the point of no return than McCain.

I was appalled to find this

I was appalled to find this DVD delivered with the NYTimes here in Michigan. The few tepid statements inserted within the film of the 'many Muslims are not terrorists' type were disingenuous at best. The bulk of the content - images, words, music, seemed clearly designed to stir up fear of Muslims and Islam in any context. The timing of the DVD is highly suspect, with one presidential candidate falsely accused of being a Muslim, and Muslims falsely accused of all endorsing terrorism. The Times has lent its credibility to this smear. For shame!

I work for the Oregonian

I work for the Oregonian newspaper, which distributed the DVD this morning. The publisher wants Clarion Funds dollars, obviously, so let's see if he regrets his decision when he loses hundreds or thousands of canceled subscriptions. I wrote and told them that if they distribute the 2nd DVD, I will immediately cancel my 20-year-long subscription!

Oh, and one other thing. Not

Oh, and one other thing. Not quite sure why they wasted their money distributing it in the greater Portland metropolitan area: Obama is currently up by 14% over McCain statewide, so my guess is that is closer to 30% in the Portland metro area. Not your definition of a swing state!

This clearly designed scare

This clearly designed scare tactic DVD is indeed being mailed directly to registered Republicans in the Philadelphia, PA area. At this stage 10/12/08 PA should no longer be seriously considered a swing state. My neighbor an older woman brought me her copy to ask if I knew anything about it or its origins etc... She received it the first full week of October. I am a former Democratic Committee person and she felt I needed to see the entire mailing package because it did indeed scare her. As a former anonymous posting mentioned it was mailed by NON Profit Org US postage permit No 49 Freeport NY 11520. This is a total insult to all people of all faiths and nonreligious individuals. Shame on the cowards who hide in secrecy behind this smear campaign of hate. SHAME SHAME SHAME!
