Barack Obama: Charm Offensive Wins Over Angry Crowd ... of Reporters

US coverage of tour reflects candidate's success with media, but polls will be test.

Washington - The mood among the US media pack that joined Barack Obama's tour on Monday was grumpy and rebellious. The 40-odd journalists boarding the campaign's Boeing 757, dubbed Obama One, in Jordan had paid thousands of dollars to accompany him but missed the first four days of a trip that took him to Afghanistan and Iraq - and information was in short supply.

"People were frustrated and upset at the start of the trip," one of the pack confirmed yesterday. But they traversed an arc in the course of the week.

The Democratic presidential candidate and his media team turned the mood around as they travelled from Israel to the West Bank and on to Germany and France, with the final stop in London today. The press corps was appeased when Obama, who prefers to sit on planes with his iPod and press cuttings or a book, ignoring staff and journalists, made a rare trip to the back of the Boeing en route from Israel to banter with reporters. Even rarer, he had an off-the-record dinner with them, at a French restaurant in Berlin on Thursday.

The restoration of relations with the press shows in the coverage he received throughout the week. He has been hailed as presidential, cable networks covered his Berlin speech live and almost every major US paper carried on their front pages a picture of him in front of a crowd of 200,000 in Berlin.

His Republican rival, John McCain, struggling to compete for coverage, acknowledged Obama's success when he joked during a speech in Ohio, alongside the Tour de France champion and cancer survivor Lance Armstrong on Thursday: "Tomorrow his tour takes him to France. In a scene Lance would recognise, a throng of adoring fans awaits Senator Obama in Paris - and that's just the American press."

It did not look like adoration on Monday. The disgruntled media pack clashed with Obama's team on the flight from Amman to Israel. The team offered an off-the-record account of a meeting between him and King Abdullah of Jordan: the reporters wanted it on the record, arguing it was presumptuous of Obama to expect White House rules on anonymity to apply while he was just a candidate. The Obama team walked away. There was another, bigger gripe. No journalist had accompanied Obama on one of the most newsworthy parts of the trip, Afghanistan and Iraq, and the television and print journalists had to rely on camera footage shot by the US military and a Senate aide on his mobile phone, raising questions about the ethics of using such material. Obama was able to get pictures of himself in the war zones on US domestic television while retaining total control.

MSNBC's Andrea Mitchell, who is covering the trip, went on air this week to complain about "fake interviews because they are not interviews from a journalist" but by the military.

The tetchiness was not confined to the travelling pack. Journalists left in the US, including Washington-based foreign correspondents, expressed unhappiness. Christopher von Marschall, Washington bureau chief of the Berlin-based daily Der Tagesspiegel, who has written a biography of Obama, complained about the candidate's "dirty little secret", saying that Obama had failed to take foreign journalists with him and in general was reluctant to make time for foreign journalists.

It is unusual for Obama to get a bad press. His media team, led by strategist David Axelrod, a former Chicago Tribune political correspondent, has been disciplined and relatively leak-free, and generally more accessible than Hillary Clinton's during the primary campaigns.

Only when polls are published can the success of the trip be judged. A Republican National Committee memo published yesterday anticipated Obama would receive a "bump" in the polls.

The crowds in Berlin will reassure Americans wanting to be loved again after the Bush years. But there is a potential downside to these scenes. Tucker Bounds, McCain's spokesman, described the Berlin scenes as "a premature victory lap", an angle that the Republicans will exploit in the months ahead. They can combine it with Obama's cancellation of a visit to US troops in hospital in Germany. Responding to criticism about the presence of so few foreign journalists on the plane, Linda Douglass, Obama's spokeswoman, told the Guardian from Berlin that there had been 200 media requests to accompany Obama but 40 places. As for the lack of reporters on the Afghanistan and Iraq legs, she said: "It was an official Congressional visit ... The trip had nothing to do with the campaign." The campaign leg began in Amman.

She added that the candidate, who she said was only getting four hours' sleep a night, had done foreign media interviews, giving two to Israeli dailies, and that the travelling pack was getting "more access to him than they want. They have a pool camera that is with him from when he gets up to when he goes to bed."

"Only when polls are

"Only when polls are published can the success of the trip be judged." That is rubbish. It makes little sense. Before the trip began the headlines went something like "Obama is taking a huge risk! He cannot afford even one mistake!" In my view he made a huge mistake, by the way, because his speech in Berlin sounded like a blueprint for decades more of U.S. global imperialism. That is extremely wrongheaded in my view. But now that he is back, with no actual gaffs or blunders, in the opinion of the guardians of the memory hole, the argument is made that it means nothing until the "polls" come out. We can't even guarantee honest, well run polls of the the official elections anymore. That the last two Presidential elections were stolen is an argument that can be well supported with volumes of evidence that has been collected by many university researchers and other authors. Convincing evidence has published and is available at the click of a mouse to anyone who can afford used books at Amazon.com that Bush has NEVER been honestly and legally elected. So please, take the "polls" with a grain of salt. They could all be corrupt, and we can be sure that some, if not most are. Please get involved with your local elections and be there to make sure that at least your job is being done honestly, and keep an eye on everything you can. I work as a Polling Place Inspector and Technician. Every election now I spend the day observing two precincts. In California we even get paid!

Isn't it nice to see the

Isn't it nice to see the world actually respecting a U.S. political figure again?!?!? And, a presidential one at that!!!!! Maybe the world really can heal and we can live in peace.

As Obama surrounds himself

As Obama surrounds himself with the members of the former Clinton administration, supports the destruction of our Constitution, and shows himself to be a hawk and war-monger, he goes to Germany, to Berlin itself, and shows himself as obeisant to Western, but especially American myth as any of his predecessors. Just to set the record straight: The Berlin Wall was not built to keep people in. It was built to keep the West out, as the other "Allies" were determined to renege on their prior agreements and take the whole of Berlin, allowing the Soviets, who did more to win WW2 by far than the US, nothing. And while many in the press recently compare Obama to JFK, they may be more correct than they imagine. For all the myth that has grown up around JFK, it was he who was the architect of the National Security State's expansion into Central and South America, and Obama appears ready to continue that tradition with its expansion into Asia. "The U.S. record of war crimes has been, from the nineteenth century to the present, a largely invisible one with no government, no political leaders, no military officials, no lower-level operatives held accountable for criminal actions. A culture of militarism has saturated the public sphere, including academia, endowing all U.S. interventions abroad with a patina of patriotic goodness and democratic sensibilities beyond genuine interrogation. Anyone challenging this mythology is quickly marginalized, branded a traitor or Communist or terrorist or simply a lunatic beyond the pale of reasonable discussion." Carl Boggs

OBAMA supports the

OBAMA supports the destruction of our Constitution? Why should I read more from Carl Boggs?

How can anyone peddle as

How can anyone peddle as much false information as Carl Boggs attempted to do. His assertion that the Berlin Wall was built not to keep the Eastern Germans in but the West out is untrue. If what he said is true why did they shoot and kill those who tried to flee to the West. Just that statement alone caused me to read no further since discredited himself from the beginning.

I join the chorus of those

I join the chorus of those are dismayed by the American obsession with empire building (“Peace Through Strength”) and discouraged by seeing Obama following that path. But I plan to vote for him because I think there is more chance of a significant change of course than with McCain. I would love to see a politician quote General Petraeus: “There is no military solution to the problems in Iraq”

I'm looking forward to a

I'm looking forward to a charming but smart US President. He's got his eyes wide open which is really important since this country's economy, resources and name have been almost sold out or ruined and global warming is creeping up on the world. Bush cried wolf too many times and a lot of us knew it was not wolf, but bull. And the Republicans are crying. This is what happens when you say one thing and do another. And they've had 6 full years of doing just what they wanted. Actually more since some can be bullied or bribed. It takes a while for the truth to be clear, but it does come out.

The polls are a joke! AP

The polls are a joke! AP ipsos polls called me randomely the day before suoertuesday. The second question eliminated me fromthe polling "are you over 18 & under 65?" Since the Oldest Boomer is only 62 years old...they have eliminated my entire peer group who grew up DURING WWII, WIT RATIONING IN A LIBERAL COUNTRY! The MAJORITY OF US HAVE A DIFFERENVT SLANT THAN THOSE OF US YOUNGER. Forget those old crocks who call into cspan, they're probably paid by some R W group!

Heavyrunner is correct.

Heavyrunner is correct. Americans were rooked in the last 2 presidential elections and many believe that Democrats won even bigger than results showed in 2006. We have some very corrupt people running our elections. Republicans want to do all they can to limit the number of people voting, limit who can vote and make sure there is no paper trail. I believe when we are looking at Obama, we are looking at the person the vast majority of Americans want as their president. Get involved in your local election. I am a poll 'worker.' The last time, I was the only Democrat out of 5 people. We are supposed to have even representation of the parties. The touch screen did not cough out the results at the end of the evening, but they coerced ME the only Dem to go on home while they took care of it. Our candidates still won, but I can't help wonder what the outcome would have been. GET INVOLVED!

Tell me ... just what is the

Tell me ... just what is the difference between McBama and OCain? In the tail wagging reality of Imperialist American Foreign Policy, neither is someone I want as President. But Americans, even those who read Truthout, seem to want the world to love us while we proceed to rape them. Curious, that. Faddy

Did anybody notice how it

Did anybody notice how it seemed that that eloquent Berlin speech by Mr. Obama that he was NOT reading from anything? Effortlessly and inspiringly his thoughts came streaming out. After the last painful 7 1/2 horrible years of Bush's inane, lying, stupid speeches, I'm so looking forward to every speech PRESIDENT OBAMA makes. GOD FORBID MY HAVING TO LISTEN TO McBUSH FOR THE NEXT FOUR YEARS, I MAY THROW AWAY MY TV SET TO AVOID HIS BORING STYLE (Not to mention the continuation of Bush's policies).

Yes, the media, including

Yes, the media, including truthout, is under the influence of "The Obama Craze" of which Matt Gonzalez wrote. I'm not the first to point out how hypocritical Obama's Berlin speech was. He's for the Mexican wall but says he wants to tear down walls. He's for the Israel/Palestine wall, but says he wants to take down walls... why does this obvious set of contradictions not appear anywhere in the papers or in Truthout? People say Obama's smart. Well he must be a lot smarter than most people because somehow they are failing to see his obvious hypocracy!

A few points: The Mexican

A few points: The Mexican border wall is being built to keep illegal immigrants out. The Berlin Wall was built to divide up part of a previously homogeneous nation. Unless we've finally thrown in the towel, and joined Mexico, it's a poor analogy. Also, saying that Obama will be better than W and the NeoCONS is definitely damning Obama with faint praise. Nixon would have been a step to the far left, compared to this current cabal. The fact is, we're getting a choice between a conservative and another conservative, thanks to the DNC and the conservative media. Unless you want to throw your vote to the Third Column, you don't get much of a choice this time. War-monger or rabid war-monger? Social conservative or social ultra-conservative? Christian dominionist or Fascio-Christian dominionist? Someone who's not concerned with the Constitution, or someone who doesn't even know it exists? These guys are both the sock-puppets of the Far Right. I only see one thing to recommend Obama over McCain. I don't think Obama is insane. -Probably. If the independent parties could have thrown up anyone this time who wasn't insane as well, they'd have my vote.

it would be nice to feel

it would be nice to feel good about a president once again. Mr. McCain may have longevity on his side, but the fact remains that he has supported virtually every policy of the failed Bush administration. If America isn't to wind up as the most heavily armed third world nation in history, a change is needed, and Mr. McCain simply represents more of the same. Mr. Obama was my state rep and my Senator. As a stringer for news agencies, I've interviewed him three times now. It's made me appreciate his wit, intellect, and ability. If we can turn back the wave of swift boating right wing pundits, we may actually have a nation again.

The only aspect of Fr.

The only aspect of Fr. Tothus' quote by Carl Boggs with which I disagree, is the timeline. This started long before the 19th century. It started when the first European first set foot on this continent. With regards to our election process, past and present, I absolutely agree with the sentiments so well articulated by Heavyrunner in the initial post to this thread. It drives me nuts that nothing, nada, has been done about the documented illegalities and improprieties of the elections from 2000 forward, or to prevent them from happening in the future. As for Senator Obama, I will admit that he sometimes makes me a bit nervous. However, in fairness, when I read or hear what Senator Obama has actually said, as opposed to what others have had to write or say about what he said, I often find that it is not nearly as clear-cut as they would have us believe. Given that we are facing the "mother of all perfect storms" (sorry, I know it is an overly used cliche, but it could not be more appropriate considering our circumstances), I have to trust someone. Given what I know of Senator Obama (and, admittedly, what I feel and hope for), I am not only willing to give him the opportunity to help us fulfill those beliefs and hopes, I am actively working to help make it so. I am also working to help elect a like-minded Congress as well as State and Local governments, for it will take all of us to make the desired and necessary changes in our way of living. I am hoping that this will be similar to FDR's first campaign and the policies he then embraced once in office. In a discussion of the policies needed to put the country back on its feet, by giving the people the means with which to put themselves back on their feet, President Roosevelt said, "You have to make me do it". Congress had to pass the legislation for him to sign; and the people had to press their representatives to enact such legislation. This could be our last chance, if it is not too late already. "The fierce urgency of now" has never been more appropriate.

Interesting stuff if you

Interesting stuff if you have time to read it!

i feel it is biased and

i feel it is biased and ignaorant to call obama a war monger or conservative since he is more to the left, and he opposed the Iraq war from the start. Obama never commented on the Israeli-Palestinian wall, and he opposes building a wall along the entire US-Mexico border

As an 87-year-old woman

As an 87-year-old woman who's been actively involved in many a presidential campaign, let me say that Barack Obama is a breath of fresh air. He's an inspiring and extremely intelligent politician who personifies the best of America and understands the hunger of most of us for a new direction...one that will uphold the rule of law, not a return to the arrogant policies of the Bush administration, Obama, in my mind, would be an excellent president of the UNITED States who could address the problems of the many disadvantaged of this country and encourage us to work together for the good of all.

Obama will be the much

Obama will be the much better President clearly. Those of you who claim to see no difference between Obama and McCain are the quislings we need to watch out for. Any complaints about Obama and the FISA Bill pale in comparison to the 100% illegal McBush administration who took us into this mess knowingly. Opposing Obama is saying you loved the invasion of Iraq under Bush so quit the doublespeak and just say it instead of trying to mislead people and discredit truthout, one of the best and completely non-partisan news sources out there.

I do not see why some people

I do not see why some people disagree with Carl Bogg's comment about Obama supporting the destruction of our constitution. Regardless of Obama's rhetoric about why he voted for the recent FISA bill, that is exactly what that bill has done. Obama could have stood with Chris Dodd and a handful of other senators to uphold our constitutional rights, but he chose not to. Obama gave a free pass to the telecom industry, and weakened the possibility of future investigations. Thanks to the FISA bill that Obama voted for, data mining of every electronic communication you make is scrutinized: every phone call, every email, and perhaps other things I cannot imagine.

Emperor Obama will lull the

Emperor Obama will lull the masses into high-minded acquiescence with his intelligence and articulate speech much as Emperor Clinton did with his, and the corporations will stomp ever more heavily on workers around the world. He will deem "the security of the American people" paramount and will continue to "defend" it militarily. He will say what people want to hear and do what the military industrial complex wants.
