Obama Confronts Lieberman on McCain Advocacy, Tone, on Senate Floor

Sen. Joe Lieberman, the self-described "Independent Democrat" who caucuses with the Democratic party in the Senate even though he has endorsed Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz, got some tough talk from Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, yesterday about his advocacy for the presumptive Republican presidential candidate and the general tone of the campaign, Democratic sources tell ABC News. Returning to the Senate after his securing the Democratic presidential nomination, Obama and Lieberman greeted each on the Senate floor in the Well as they were voting on the budget resolution.

They shook hands. But Obama didn't let go, leading Lieberman - cordially - by the hand across the room into a corner on the Democratic side, where Democratic sources tell ABC News he delivered some tough words for the junior senator from Connecticut, who had just minutes before hammered Obama's speech before the pro-Israel group AIPAC in a conference call arranged by the McCain campaign.

The two spoke intensely for approximately five minutes, with no one able to hear their conversation. Reporters watched as Obama leaned closely in to Lieberman, whose back was literally up against the wall.

Neither party is officially talking. But while Lieberman spokesman Marshall Whitman says the conversation was "a cordial and friendly discussion" and Obama campaign spokesman Bill Burton says it was "private and friendly," Democratic sources tell ABC News that the conversation was a stern rebuke to Lieberman for his criticism of the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee on the conference call, as well as a discussion about how far Lieberman is willing to go in his advocacy of McCain, and the tone of the campaign.

"It's one thing to support McCain," said one Democratic source, "but many think Uncle Joe has gone too far."

Obama campaigned for Lieberman in 2006 when he was challenged (and ultimately defeated) in his primary race for his Senate seat. When Lieberman opted to run as an independent, Obama wrote a supportive email endorsing Democratic nominee Ned Lamont, but he did not appear in person for him, unlike other Democrats, such as Sen. Chris Dodd, D-Conn.

On the McCain conference call yesterday, Lieberman congratulated Obama "in securing the Democratic nomination and to express my own hope as a supporter of John McCain that this will be a civil and constructive campaign debate from here to November."

The only Orthodox Jew in the U.S. Senate then criticized the White House hopeful's speech to the Jewish pro-Israel lobby AIPAC, saying, "I would say respectfully that I thought in this speech that there was a disconnect between things Senator Obama said today in particularly with regards to Iran and things that he has said or done earlier either in the campaign and senate. To be specific, I was troubled earlier in the year during the campaign season when Senator Obama referred to, I guess compared Iran and other rogue and terrorists states to the Soviet Union and minimized the threat represented by Iran. I think that is wrong."

Lieberman also criticized Obama for voting against an amendment he offered with Sen. Jon Kyl, R-Ariz., that designated Iran's Revolutionary Guard a terrorist group, and included other language that Obama said linked the war in Iraq to Iran in a way that troubled him. "Senator Obama opposed it saying it was saber rattling and referring to the possible threat of military force," Lieberman said. "But if you look at the Kyl-Liebermann Amendment as it was passed, it has none of that in it, regarding military action. I was hoping and I still hope that he will say that that vote was a mistake, and that he would support that resolution."

"Obama today argued that American foreign policy in recent years has essentially sort of strengthened Iran," Lieberman continued. "At one point, he almost seems to suggest that it helped to elect us Ahmadinejad, and has made Israel safe. I just disagree with that. Iran elected Ahmadinejad for their own reasons. If Israel is in danger today, it's not because of American foreign policy which has been strongly supportive of Israel in every way, it is not because what we have done in Iraq, it is because Iran is a fanatical terrorist, expansionist state and has a leader and a leadership that constantly threatens to extinguish the state of Israel."

"Its a difficult situation," Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Illinois, the Senate Democrats' Assistant Majority Leader and a major Obama backer, told reporters Wednesday, according to Roll Call. "Joe is my friend ... but I hope he doesn't become the lead attack dog. Of course it's a concern when someone in your Caucus is supporting the other party's candidate. Let's not try and sugarcoat it."

Lieberman agreed to caucus with the Democrats, who need his vote in the narrowly-divided Senate, in order to maintain power. But the Nutmeg stater is testing the patience of Democratic leaders by endorsing McCain and agreeing to speak at the Republican National Convention in September. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., told MSNBC they would "watch very closely" how far Lieberman takes his advocacy.

But Obama may feel Lieberman has already taken it too far.

i like how fear mongers

i like how fear mongers continue to perpetuate the myth about iran. isn't it a known fact that the "wipe israel off the map"was a misinterpretation? No, of course not, because the major media outlets would rather run 24/7 coverage of celebrity bullshit like britney spears' mental health than news that matters. Is this becoming increasingly frustrating for anyone else?!

I hail from the land the

I hail from the land the British sympathizers ended up in (along with the French and First Nations), so I'm not that well read on the 'who's who' of American politics. That said, it's nice to see someone have the cojones to state the obvious flip-flopping nature of Mr. Barack Hussein Obama. I think the condition is called 'chameleon'. Ahem. To the folks south of the 49th: good luck with your choice, eh?

It appears that his loyalty

It appears that his loyalty lies with IS(is) RA EL. Clearly, he prefers the 'safety' of his secondary citizenship to that of his primary. The smell of war and greed is all over the sleaze bag.

i was glad that lieberman

i was glad that lieberman left the democratic party. he wishes to be married to them anyways. good riddance. he talks out of both sides of his mouth and sucks way too much air for my comfort. good riddance. he needs to be coming out of the closet and just admit he wants to be a republican and get it over with. i cannot stand that little liar.

There have been many who

There have been many who have pointed out that the "I" behind Lierberman's name stands NOT for "Independent," but for "Israel." Would that he was independent of the most extreme Israeli Likud voices whose interests he represents in the U.S. Senate. He has also come to embrace the very racist type approaches to politics he fought against in the 1960's. Go ahead Joe and embrace your brethren Rev. Hagee. Now we know we're you really stand and how you feel towards those whom you and your ilk consider to be nothing but untrustworthy "schwartzes."

I just want to remind one of

I just want to remind one of the way Lieberman got his skanky ass in the Senate this time: He LOST the Democratic nomination to brand spankin new Ned Lamont, who rode the anti-war platform. I drove 5 hours home to CT just to vote against Lieberman. We OUSTED him. When he decided to run as Independent, Dems of all colors including Hillary begged him not to. Why did he win the state? Because the Republican candidate was so bad he only had 2% of the vote and wasn't even endorsed by the Republican party! Thus Republicans had no one to vote for but Lieberman, which he obviously knew. Lamont would have made a good Democratic Senator. Lieberman kisses Bush, licks Israel's ass, and sleeps with the Republicans. Who's to blame? CT in the end because the reason we have so many Republicans in an otherwise intelligent state, is that until Weicker in 1990 there was no income tax. All the rich and famous in the country who wanted to hide their income from taxation moved to CT- officially. Interestingly enough, though, the reason there was no Republican candidate was that Lieberman had been there long enough (he DID used to be a real Democrat) that no one expected anyone to beat him. Ned Lamont was a dark horse candidate. Just a little history from one who voted against Lieberman TWICE.

Lieberman ran as an

Lieberman ran as an Independent after Ned Lamont beat him in the Democratic Primary. The Republicans in Connecticut, after contributing heavilly to Lieberman's campaign elected him - not the Democrats. Lieberman may have been a Democrat at one time, but no longer is, and as soon as the Democrats gain a real majority after the next election, Lieberman needs to be booted from the Democratic Caucus and physically made to leave the Democratic side of the isle and take a seat on the Republican side. He usually votes with them anyway.

Joe Liarman? George W. Bush

Joe Liarman? George W. Bush is a murderous criminal, guilty of grizzly war crimes against humanity, who can't remember whether or not he smoked rock cocaine while on several benders. Nothing to see here, move along.

We've come a long way, baby!

We've come a long way, baby! Remember when Joe Lieberman was Al Gore's venerable vice presidential pick? It seems to me this Zionist flake is being vetted by fellow Democrats about one war too late.

I don't know, but can they

I don't know, but can they recall this gentleman? Perhaps if the people of CT began a movement to recall that might bring Lieberman back to sanity. Econolicious

Did anyone hear former US

Did anyone hear former US National Security Adviser Zbigniew Brzezinsky on msnbc's Morning Joe (Scarborough)? Brzezinsky is a Barrack Obama supporter and his ideas were the perfect antidote to Joe Lieberman's false claims about Obama on Iran. Brzezinsky said it would be suicidal for Iran to attack Israel because of the overwhelming military strength of Israel and the US. He also said that if we do not talk to Iran, we will accomplish nothing. He also attacked the present administration of doing little more than calling them bad names. He said there was an opportunity to be gained by talking to them because many educated people in Iran are not angry with the US. You can get the script on msnbc's website under morning joe. A great read. Go Obama!

Lieberman should be

Lieberman should be tolerated by Democrats so long as he helps Dems organize the Senate. He does no more damage on the inside than he would do on the outside. His uncritical support of EVERYTHING Israel does is little different than Irish Catholics who supported IRA violence, Protestants who supported Ian Paisley's formerly bloodthirsty approach, American Mafia who's bloody ties to Sicily negated their obligations to America, Cubans in Florida whose political interest lies offshore, radical evangelicals and anti-birth-control Catholics who undermine our unity and individual rights, etc. We are a diverse people, and unfortunately a number of us seem to care more about "back home" or "our creed"than about our own nation and the freedom and rights of our fellow American's.

I sure hope that little

I sure hope that little whining warmongering scolding traitor Joseph Lieberman has met his match. He is disloyal not just to the party but to our country. I hope Obama not only kicks him out of the party but humiliates him thoroughly and publicly to his face. I wish we could see witless Joe squirm and wither, preferably at the Democratic convention, under a scathing denunciation by the toweringly superior Obama, followed by a thunderstorm of applause. But of course, Lieberman probably won't dare show either of his faces at the Democratic convention this year.

Lieberman needs to go, he

Lieberman needs to go, he doesn't belong in the Democratic Party and is one of the reasons many Democrats have left the party and become independents. As long as the party panders to him and provides him money they are enabling him in his ridiculous viewpoints and obvious support of the Republicans. I would hope that Obama would, as he did with the church he had belonged to that swayed, distance himself from Lieberman and perhaps denounce him as the Republican Machine politician he really is. It's time for the 'old guard' of the Democratic Party to retire out and let younger, smarter, and more effective people take the helm. Lieberman, Clinton and the rest should not be running things.

Unfortunately Democrats need

Unfortunately Democrats need Lieberman to keep their slim majority in the Senate. If he is forced out and he caucuses with the Repugs, will the Senate be able to do anything? He needs to go, with a swift kick to his behind, but only after we are done using him. He is a great example of blind allegiance to an ancient dogma. As I read things we have two Independents who caucus with Dems, leaving the Senate with a 51-49 split. If the Lieber shifts we have a 50-50 split with Darth Cheney breaking the tie. All this according to Harry Reid, another suspect Democrat... Oh well, at least the Democrats don't goose step in time to the music like the "Others". I'm sure if I am wrong on this, someone will let me know.

It is about time someone

It is about time someone confronts this snake. Joe Lieberman should be rooted out of every Democratic committee. But sometimes the only one who can do it is a strong black man. And when my baby gets to the WHITE House, LIEberman days are done. Go Obama!!!!!!1

To the anonymous commenter

To the anonymous commenter who said Lieberman is no Democrat and should be labeled as such: He was elected as an Independent after the Democratic primaries kicked him out. How much more labelling do we need?

Although LIEber is the

Although LIEber is the junior senator from CT and I live in CT LIEber is not, and will never be, "my" senator.

As a Jew committed to seeing

As a Jew committed to seeing a peaceful resolution for BOTH Palastenians and Jews I find Lieberman to belong in the same camp as Pastor John Hagee - hateful and prejudiced.

who would want Lieberman's

who would want Lieberman's support? He easily ranks among America's worst senators and is a disgace not only to the United States, but the human race as a whole. Obama needs to go back to his populist roots and shake the shackles of the Israeli lobby in America.

It's about time someone

It's about time someone confronted this turncoat! Bravo to nominee Obama for reading LIEberman the riot act. When we have a much larger majority in the senate, we can officially give Uncle Joe the cold, hard boot.

"Harry Reid, D-Nev., told

"Harry Reid, D-Nev., told MSNBC they would "watch very closely" how far Lieberman takes his advocacy." Hey, Senator Reid, is that kind of like watching paint dry on a wall? WTF. How castrated can you be? Get some gonads and take action and get rid of this SOB Rethug once and for all. Sitting on your rear watching isn't going to help Obama, the Democrats or America. Lieberman went off the deep end years ago. Cut the cord. NOW!

Lieberman just found out

Lieberman just found out that Obama is not your typical passive democrat who would not dare make waves. As soon as Obama wins the election, Lieberman will be assigned to his rightful spot, a rat hole in the basement of the Senate.

Harry Reid needs to quit the

Harry Reid needs to quit the kid glove treatment of LIEberman and boot him off his committee seats NOW, not after the election. This vile punk is playing the Dems for fools and needs to get smacked down hard.

Lieberman is nothing more

Lieberman is nothing more than a turncoat and his every move should be seen with suspicion. He is only hanging in with the Democrats so he can sabotage any thing he can that he thinks will help the Republicans. He is a collaborator that has no loyalty to any one other than AIPAC and Israel. Obama has his number and he is making sure that Lieberman knows it. Any fool knows why he 'supports' McCain ... probably because AIPAC and Israel told him to. Why else ? McCain's scintillating intellect ?

Lieberman says: "... Iran is

Lieberman says: "... Iran is a fanatical terrorist, expansionist state and has a leader and a leadership that constantly threatens to extinguish the state of Israel." If ever there was projection and psychopathic denial by U.S./Israeli dual citizen Lieberman, this is it. The blood-thirsty, paranoid psychopaths of the secular [if you know your history] Zionist Government of Israel has been attempting to exterminate Palestinians from the get-go. A good 65 per cent of Israeli citizens who are practicing religious Jews are appalled at their own government's policies toward Palestine, a similar percentage to those of us U.S. citizens who are appalled at the destruction of our own nation by the Bush Administration who also is ignoring the genociding of the Palestinians. Mr. Lieberman's Orthodoxy is a sham as well as his calling himself an independent DEMOCRAT. He neither honors nor takes his instruction from The Torah, The Talmud, The Ten Commandments or the Constitution of the United States or the ordinary promptings of conscience of a reasonable human being. I'm disgusted with his serpentine act, and I hope the Democratic Party itself will remove him from the stage ASAP. Ugh ... disgusting.

Lieberman is a disgrace to

Lieberman is a disgrace to Connecticut, the party, and Israelis alike. Most Israelis are much more rational and liberal than the Jeiwsh equivalent of the stage Irishman, Lieberman. He is like many of those in the political life who hid behind a lapel pin and espouse nonsense.

Lieberman is a closet

Lieberman is a closet Republican who fakes Liberalism for Connecticut votes. McCain is a closet Liberal who fakes Conservatism to get votes. The two players lie in the same bed. Inversely proportional but reciprocal. A perfect match except that Joe is a direct liason for AIPAC1

It appears that Lieberman's

It appears that Lieberman's loyalties are first to Israel. Obama appears to be trying to do what is right. I just hope he doesn't commit too much to support of Israel in order to gain Jewish support.

Joe Lieberman is a fake and

Joe Lieberman is a fake and should not be a Senator in this country. It seems to me that he represents to people of Israel more then he represents the working people of this country. Israel is doing just fine, they have health care and education for all their people for very little cost. Israel has manufacturing and exporting and economically is doing fine, whereas we here in USA we don`t have health care, and education is so expensive most working people will not be able to send there children anymore to collage unless they have plenty of money, and manufacturing is being done in others countries not here, and the sad thing is that Lieberman dosen`t see it nor dose he care. Lieberman is a little man who never served his country in the military, but pushes for war and the war profiteers. So Mister Lieberman go to Israel if they will have you, but my concern is USA, and I want the best benies for our people here, that means the same thing Israel has, health care, education persuit of happiness, and peace. We don`t need the likes of Lieberman.

I was one of the first

I was one of the first female executives ever at Exxon. It was difficult. What you have done with such grace and aplomb defies the imagination. Please find the strength within to run again. Thanks for everything. Judith K. Pendergast

What Obama could tell him

What Obama could tell him is: your vote counts now, but if, as is likely, there is a much larger Democratic majority in the next Congress, it won't count for bupkas and he can say goodbye to power over his committee--unless he starts to act like a Democrat again. Probably Obama doesn't have to say that; it's probably understood by both of them; it should be. So, they attempt to remain civil. As for nobamagirl: what kind of Democrat are you if you're not going to vote for the most progressive nominee we've had since McGovern (who has endorsed him, by the way), but you hate the supercilious Lieberman?

Lieberman is a traitorous

Lieberman is a traitorous schemer.

What a joke. We haven't

What a joke. We haven't forgotten that Obama cited Lieberman as one of his valued "mentors" - such fun to watch the children in the playground duke it out now...both of them are snakeoil salesmen and though nothing in the world would make THIS Dem vote for Obama, I have to laugh at the thought of Obama putting the little senator for Israel up against the wall. Too bad he wasted his breath though...Lieberman answers to one thing and one thing alone. I should know...he's my disgraceful senator.

Lieberman needed to be

Lieberman needed to be confronted. He's been much too cozy with McCain. He's no Democrat and should be labeled as anti-democrat.
