Newark, New Jersey - Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama criticized Republican John McCain's approach to Social Security on Saturday, saying it would undermine the government program aimed mainly at retirees.

Obama said McCain's campaign has suggested trimming Social Security benefits and raising the eligibility age, according to prepared remarks of his speech to a gathering of the AARP. Obama was addressing the group via satellite.

McCain has not specifically embraced such plans. But by saying "everything is on the table" in discussing changes to Social Security, he has opened himself to such criticisms from Democrats.

Obama also said McCain wants to privatize a portion of Social Security. McCain has praised the notion of letting younger workers place a portion of their Social Security taxes into a package that is invested and follows them to retirement, but he has not made it a campaign promise.

All workers pay Social Security payroll taxes on the first $102,000 of their annual income. The money pays for benefits for current retirees and for other government programs. Analysts say the program will begin running short of funds in a few decades if it is not changed.

Obama cited his proposals to place a new Social Security payroll tax on incomes above $250,000 and to eliminate federal income taxes for older people making less than $50,000 a year. He also said he would "allow the government to negotiate with drug companies to lower costs for seniors, and we'll allow reimportation of drugs from other countries and ensure their safety."

The Wall Street Journal reported in March that McCain's top aides were "considering cost-of-living adjustment cuts and raising the retirement age as part of their Social Security plan." McCain has not endorsed or rejected those ideas.

McCain spokesman Tucker Bounds said the Republican nominee "has always promised to fiercely protect Social Security benefits."

My sole income is from

My sole income is from social security-money taken out of my paycheck: my money. I challenge "can't remember how many houses I own" McBush to live on my income, which is far below the poverty level. As a child I played with worthless stock certificates. If anyone is stupid enough to put their future ability to eat and pay for shelter in "private investment funds"- stocks, the rest of us don't deserve the inevitable effect.

Excellent post above-pretty

Excellent post above-pretty much sums up why the Social Security program was set up by FDR & Congress. Because stock markets fail. No one is stopping people from investing in the market for their retirement--in addition to paying into Social Security. Or setting up an IRA or Roth IRA. Imo, the real reasons for the push to privatize are:(1) additional investment fees/commissions that would be paid to the already wealthy brokers; (2) some members of the GOP & the wealthy hated FDR, still hate his programs and have done their best to take us back to the 1920's. That's about the only way in which I'd say the Bushies, & Gingrich & all of those people are doing a "good" job.

Privitization is the new

Privitization is the new socialist-fascism which has privitized our prison systems for cheap labor while they make deals to extend anyone's jail time and paying off our elected officials who vote on these things! I don't trust that any of my money would be 'held safe' for anyone's future in this neo-Nazi regime! My SSA comes from my disability since my job refused to transfer me to work elsewhere there since I did NOT want to have to quit there. I worked sometimes 3 jobs to make ends meet back in the '70s and '80s and find there not much difference in our economy since then except that its much worse. Easy for McBush/McCrazy to say that with confidence since his wife is a billionaire and he doesn't care since politicians don't pay into Social Security.

There is no reason why

There is no reason why Social Security and free medical care shouldn't be a human right just because it's socialistic. Civilized countries in Europe have capitalism and socialistic programs that work just fine. We have been brainwashed into believing that taking care of the poor, infirm, and indigent is wrong even though the ones most fervent about conservative right wing family values are fundamentalist Christians. They want every child born, and after they are born, they say tough luck. You either make it or you don't. About 5% of every population is not going to be able to make it without some help. Are we just going to keep throwing them overboard or to jail, or letting them die, or are we going to truly care for them? The present administration wants to do for Social Security what they have done to health care. Make it a crap shoot.

Although I think that

Although I think that Medicare is in greater jeopardy than Social Security, I do think that some adjustments might be needed to keep SS viable. I oppose privatization, but I'm not opposed to examining some other options - adjusting the COLA, raising the cut-off, raising the age for full benefits - all depending on economic and demographic trends. Keep it as is if we can, but promising what we can't deliver shouldn't be a litmus test for a candidate.

I watched McCain state that

I watched McCain state that the current system of having workers pay for current retirees was "a disgrace". Obama should point that out.

Right! They would protect

Right! They would protect it! Sure they would! Listen people. Those REPUKES are a bunch of Sociopaths, and no one can believe a word they say. They lie like rugs. Every word that comes out of their mouths is a LIE! They want to privatize our Social Security, and we ALL know that. So, if you are smart, vote for Barack and Biden who will protect us, not put us at risk. The ONLY ones McBush and Beulah Barracuda care about are their Corporate Cronies, and then, maybe not even them. They are really only in it for themselves!!!

It is vile of John McCain to

It is vile of John McCain to even suggest privatizing Social Security. That's been paid for by honest, hard working Americans out of their paychecks, to keep them secure in their old age. What has John McCain ever earned? He comes from a rich, prominent military family that financed his education. He gets a six-figure income from being in the senate, and if that isn't enough, he can always live off Cindy's trillions. But that's the mindset of Republicans, they think that what's theirs is theirs, and what's everyone else's ought to be theirs, too.

I agree with the Republicans

I agree with the Republicans in principle, kinda sorta. We need to make some cuts in crazy government spending. I just have a small difference of opinion about where we place the scalpel. Like, let's start by going from spending 50% of all military expenditures ON THE ENTIRE PLANET, and drop it down to say, 40%. I bet they could make up half of that drop just by not hiring mercenaries anymore. Then I bet they could cover the rest by not starting up any more pin-headed wars to pursue nebulous goals set by chickenhawk armchair generals with no more understanding of strategy than they gleaned from watching football while drunk. I bet that 10% could buy us all a decent single-payer health care system, and decent roads, and a decent education system, and decent treatment of veterans. But no, it's the same-old "borrow and spend" Republicans, up to their tired, failed, Deficit-Building tricks again, while a few of their war profiteer buddies suck up the kind of taxpayer-provided wealth that Jesus said WON'T get you into heaven. (-Something about the eye of a needle, right?) If privatizing our whole country out from under us is such a bloody great idea, why aren't we living in paradise by now? The Republicans took a budget surplus, and turned it into the biggest deficit in the history of the world, and now they want to pretend there's no money for social programs of any kind? Tough. Sell off some foreign military bases to the oil companies that benefit from them! Cut "Homefried Security" down to the size of a normal bloated Federal agency! The money is there, it's just currently being used to make sure that the rest of the world fears and / or hates us!

I'm mystified about the

I'm mystified about the $102-250k contribution donut hole. Adding this large group could ensure a bigger reservoir for the future. In truth, it's immediately taken for the budget, replaced with gov't IOU's. After I send my grandkids to college, I hope they won't mind too much paying for my retirement.

I was very proud of Barack

I was very proud of Barack Obama. I feel safe in his presence and I can trust that his decisions will be thorough and careful. I find it hard to believe why someone would vote for anyone else. It is a matter of national security, social security, homeland security, and security of our existence as a planet. Please join the campaign, join moveon.org, go to your democratic precinct office. We need to unite and work. The time is short.

John McCain supported

John McCain supported President Bush's plan to privatize Social Security. I'm saddened the AP reporter failed to mention that in the story. For McCain spokesperson Tucker Bounds to say McCain "has always promised to fiercely protect Social Security benefits" is clearly a lie. The Bush plan McCain supported was not only shot down but blasted down as harmful to seniors. McCain would do it again. Barrack Obama has a better plan.

How about this: if McCain

How about this: if McCain were to privatize social security and it (duh) didn't work out, then we would simply have to nationalize his wife's company and probably every other corporation in the country to pay for his mistake. We wouldn't really have any other choice, right? Now if the stakes were that high, do you think those guys would still back privatization?
