Part One: Keith Olbermann's interview with Barack Obama.

    Interview Transcript

Keith Olbermann: Senator, thanks for your time. I'm sorry I couldn't join you in person, but I had to update people on quarterback injuries or something like that.

    (Laughter)
Senator Barack Obama: Thanks, Keith.

    Keith Olbermann: This is...

Senator Barack Obama: Lousy day for quarterbacks.

Keith Olbermann: Yes, it is. Brady is out. This is more about campaign tactics to start with rather than issues. But it seems sometimes like tactics have replaced issues altogether. "He fights pork barrel spending," said this new McCain/Palin ad, "she stopped the 'Bridge to Nowhere.'"

I mean, it sounds a little like "Remington Steele," but I'm confused otherwise. As late as October of 2006, Mrs. Palin insisted to voters in Alaska that not only would she defend that infamous bridge, but she also said - and here's the quote - "She would not allow the spinmeisters to turn this project or any other into something that's so negative." What are Senator McCain and Governor Palin doing in this new commercial, do you think?

Senator Barack Obama: They're not telling the truth. You know, I mean, it's - I think we've all gotten accustomed to being able to spin things in politics. But when you've got somebody who was for a project being presented as being against it, then that, you know, stretches the bounds of spin into new areas.

And you know, as far as John McCain is concerned, you know, I think that Senator McCain has, on occasion, broken with his party, but this notion that, as he said at his convention, that he would tell the lobbyists that they're not going to be running Washington anymore, who is he going to tell, his campaign chairman, Charlie Black, his campaign manager, Rick Davis, two of the largest corporate lobbyists in Washington with client lists that extend into every major industry?

You know, there is just a sense that they're making these assertions that ignore the facts of their campaigns and their past history. And I think people should be troubled by that.

Keith Olbermann: And Governor Palin hired a lobbyist to get earmarks to the tune of $27 million for a 6,000-person town which is - in its own scope, is kind of a neat trick, but it does seem to counterbalance the basic platform of the Republican Party.

You said that they're not telling the truth here, but when the stuff is a gross distortion, whether it's about their own positions or yours, or facts in your history or whatever, what can you do about it? And why do people hesitate to use the word "lie" about these things?

Senator Barack Obama: Well, look, we have been very clear about the fact that this argument John McCain and Sarah Palin are making, that they are agents of change, just won't fly. It defies their history and their background.
And we saw it in the convention that they wouldn't talk about the basic issues that are really going to make a difference in the lives of middle class families.

So you know, I'm happy to have legitimate policy debates with them on where we want to take health care, what we want to do about energy, what we want to do about education, what are we going to do about the war in Iraq.

But you know, for them to run an ad that basically doesn't present an accurate record of their positions on issues I think should raise some questions about how they would approach an administration.

Keith Olbermann: To something from your own convention, maybe the most compelling moment of your acceptance speech in Denver was that one strongly voiced word, "enough." A lot of people who have felt angry about what has been done to this country in the last seven or eight years have that same sense of urgency and simplicity to it.

Have you thought of using on the campaign trail and in your speaking engagements, more exclamation points? Have you thought of getting angrier?

Senator Barack Obama: Well, I'll tell you what, with two months to go, I think everybody needs to feel a sense of urgency. You know, when I hear John McCain suggest that he is going to bring about change, I am reminded of the cartoon that Tom Toles did in "The Washington Post" where he has McCain say: "Watch out, George Bush, with the exception of the economy, tax policy, foreign policy, health care policy, education policy, and Karl Rove politics, we're really going to shake things up in Washington."

You know, the fact of the matter is, is that not only has John McCain agreed with George Bush 90 percent of the time, this is the party that has been in charge for eight years. And they're now trying to run against themselves despite a few months ago having argued that - John McCain saying that, listen, I've been supportive of George Bush, boasting about it.

You know, I said, I think on Saturday in Indiana, the American people aren't stupid. They are going to get it. But we've got to make sure that we are being clear, not only that they will not bring about change, but the very specific kinds of changes we want to bring, in terms of green technology jobs in America, investing in our education system, making college more affordable, making health care accessible to every American, that contrast, if we go into November, with that contrast on the minds of the American people, I think we're going to do well.

Keith Olbermann: But clearly it must not be fully on their minds because the race is as close as it is. And nobody's burst into laughter at the latest Republican ad, at least not many Republicans have.

Have the Republicans succeeded in muddying up this election in kind of overcomplicating it so the point is not as simple as you just made it.

Sixty years ago Harry Truman went out and campaigned very simply, looked out at people in trouble because of a Republican Congress at that point and the impact it had on their lives and he said, "How many more times do you have to be hit over the head till you figure out who's hitting you?"

I mean, has your campaign in some way not kept it that simple?

Senator Barack Obama: You know, we've actually been driving this point home and I think the convention drove it home. But look, the Republicans can't govern but they run smart campaigns and frankly, they are not always policed by the media as effectively as they should be.

I was struck with how little scrutiny some of the claims that John McCain and Sarah Palin were making, how little they were subjected to scrutiny coming out of the convention. It's our job to press the point and make the case and I think that the Republicans have been pretty successful at working the refs during this game.

But yeah, I have confidence in the American people that if we just drum home the fact that the country is off course, that middle class families are struggling, your wages and incomes have gone down under George Bush. Under Democrats, they went up. Unemployment has gone up. Unemployment was down under Bill Clinton.

If we just keep on being clear about how we are going to rebuild this economy, then I think we are going to end up winning this campaign.

Keith Olbermann: And there are extraordinarily large developments in terms of that economy. Especially in the last couple of days, especially about Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. They were created as a kind of gentle encouragement by government to more home ownership, to make it more possible.

There is nothing gentle about it, it is now fully taxpayer funded subsidization of home interest rates and home ownership. Should this be the way it is? Is this a permanent solution or did we just add $5 trillion to the national debt? What do we do now about this?

Senator Barack Obama: Well, I don't think it's going to be $5 trillion. That's the amount of debt that Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac are holding. But a lot of those are good mortgages. People are paying them. We are going to see some losses. Taxpayers are going to take a hit. How big it is, we don't yet know.

And I have to be fair on this one. Republicans and Democrats I think in Congress did not pay enough attention to the structural problem with Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac which was, they are quasi public, quasi private institutions. They are making big profits and their CEOs are taking in big bonuses when times are good. But there is this implicit federal guarantee when times are bad.

And that was a structural problem that needs to be fixed.

But the problem of not regulating the financial markets effectively generally, not seeing that the subprime mortgage crisis was leading to a mess, not updating some of our financial regulations since the 1930s, that's been, I think, an example of the neglect on the part of the Bush administration over the last eight years whose view is basically anything goes and the government just has to stay out of the way. That has ironically hurt the market and one of the things we have got to rediscover is a little bit of well-applied regulation and transparency and accountability actually helps the market, helps the economy grow.

And that's what I want to restore when I'm president.

Keith Olbermann: You pointed out last week how little time at their convention Republicans spent talking about the economy. I think the time might have been zero, zero, zero. I'm not sure. We weren't running a clock. But if the election does, in fact, hinge on the economy, on how Americans are doing, has there been thought given to breaking this down to its simplest element, in much the way one of the Republican icons, Mr. Reagan did during the 1980 campaign, and ask the voters if today, are you better off now than you were eight years ago?

Senator Barack Obama: Oh, absolutely. And I often do that on the campaign trail.

And we're going to just keep on repeating that.

I mean, this is - this should not be complicated. Here's what it comes down to. Under George Bush's stewardship, with an assist from John McCain and the rest of the Republican Party, the economy is weaker now than it has been in a very long time. Unemployment is higher.

Poverty is higher. More people are uninsured. Wages and incomes have flat-lined. Middle-class folks who used to feel secure now feel unstable. We've got more homes being lost to foreclosure than at any time since the Great Depression.

And John McCain does not have any discernible difference from George Bush when it comes to economic policy. He's got the same economic policy. So if you like what has happened under George Bush's presidency, you should vote for John McCain. If you think that we have to move this country in a fundamentally different direction, then you should vote for me. And that is going to be the case that we make throughout this election, and frankly, that's not the conversation that the McCain campaign wants to have.

Rick Davis was very explicit. John McCain's campaign manager said this campaign is not going to be about the issues. That was his assertion. Well, I think that the American people expect it to be about the issues. They deserve it to be about the issues. That's what we're going to keep on pressing in the weeks that will remain.

Keith Olbermann: In terms of getting that and other messages out, Rachel Maddow wanted me to ask this question, so I'm doing this on her behalf, because her new show is starting tonight. Given - given the tone that the campaign has taken, I mean, this Georgia congressman last week, Mr. Westmoreland, who called you and your wife, quote, "uppity." In that context, do you regret putting the brakes on the 527 groups who would have produced or could have produced hard-hitting ads that would have been sharing your sympathies?

Senator Barack Obama: You know, I'll tell you what, Keith, I am confident that the American people, once the dust has settled, are going to say to themselves, "Do we really want to do the same thing we've been doing for the last eight years? Or do we want something new?" I think there's a genuine sense of anxiety out there, not just about immediate economic prospects but the sense that we are not living up to what's possible in America, that we're not delivering on the American promise.

And I think that understandably people are saying to themselves, gosh, we like Obama, we like his message, but we haven't known him that long, let's really lift the hood, kick the tires, you know, take them out and watch them work hard.

And you know, let's take a look at these debates and then we're going to make up our mind in mid-October. And I think that by the time this thing is all over, the contrast is going to be clear and I believe the American people are going to make the choice for a new direction in the country.

And I'm looking forward to helping to lead that.

Keith Olbermann: One more campaign question. It pertains to not knowing someone or something. This is a question I have not really heard asked directly of anybody in a position perhaps to answer it, let alone answered.

In your opinion, is Governor Palin experienced enough and qualified enough to become president of the United States in the relatively short-term future?

Senator Barack Obama: Well, you know, I'll let you ask Governor Palin that when I'm sure she'll be appearing on your show.

    (Laughter)
Senator Barack Obama: But rather than focus on a resume, I just want to focus on where she wants to take the country. As far as I can tell, there has not been any area, economic policy or foreign policy, in which she is different from John McCain or George Bush.

In many ways, in fact, she agrees with George Bush even more than John McCain. So if John McCain agrees with Bush 90 percent of the time, maybe with her it's 97 percent. And so my - the thrust of our argument is going to be that the McCain/Palin ticket is offering the same stuff that has resulted in the middle class struggling, not seeing their incomes go up, seeing their costs go up, falling deeper into debt, at risk of losing their homes to foreclosure, unable to save or retire.

Those are going to be I think the issues that ultimately matter to the voters, and that's why I'm trying to offer to them a very clear set of prescriptions, very clear ideas about what we intend to do, how we want to change the tax code, stop giving tax breaks to companies that ship jobs overseas, give 95 percent of Americans tax relief.

Have an energy policy that is serious about climate change, is serious about weaning ourselves off of Middle Eastern oil, investing in solar and wind and biodiesel so we've got energy independence and creating jobs here in the United States, having a health care system that makes sure that we don't have 47 million people without health insurance.

That message of possibility is, I think, the one that the American people are looking for.

McCain/Palin are the "bridge

McCain/Palin are the "bridge to nowhere". They want to keep fighting the Iraq "bridge to nowhere" war. They want to avoid talking about any social issues except for abortion. They offer no solutions to the energy crisis except for drill, drill, drill. The oil magnate T. Boone Pickens said go ahead drill, drill, drill, but it misses the point, it will do nothing to lessen our dependance on foreign oil, which is the root of the problem. McCain's financial advisor Phil Gramm helped bring about the subprime mortgage crisis by completely deregulating the mortgage industry. Rumors have it that he is still a McCain advisor. What happened to the Bridge to nowhere money? Palin accepted the money and used it to build a highway to the town where the bridge to nowhere was to be built. They have made this entire election about abortion and the bridge to nowhere. We don't need them to bring America further along on the bridge to nowhere. Enough!

A lunatic fringe blatantly

A lunatic fringe blatantly biased correspondent and an unqualified presidential candidate. Who are you going to have next.... Tom Likus? The only thing that will change with Obama is his mind.

Do people read this? Or

Do people read this? Or care?

I watched the interview on

I watched the interview on MSNBC yesterday. The critical factor is that Mr. Olbermann asked good questions and got complete answers. He is a competent journalist. The fact that the “suits” at NBC and its corporate parent removed Messrs. Mathews and Olbermann from their planned moderator role in the upcoming debates shows how seriously the strength of the press in this democracy has been broken. This is an extremely disturbing situation --- especially in the face of the patent Republican and "conservative" bias so freely set forth by FoxNews. It will be very telling to see how Charlie Gibson handles the interview with Gov. Palin. If he knuckles under and fawns over her with softball questions and follows the party line questions about “gender discrimination” from Steve Schmidt’s playbook --- with an interview pattern that deliberately sidesteps important questions and real policy issues --- we’ll then the country is really sunk. Or maybe democracy is just another word when you got nothing else to lose.

Once again a GOP "soap" to

Once again a GOP "soap" to distract from reality. Hollow Man (J.McCrazy) and Palin the Talking Parrot have no business in this election. What disrespect shown to the American people and the Democratic process by McCrazy in how he chose a VP. Just insane. Take a step back and look at these two, how in the world can any semi-rational human being actually consider these two as leaders at any level, let alone as P and VP of the USA. We have a candidate in Sen. Obama who is smart, articulate, and highly organized and then we have GI Joe (Ret.) and Evil Barbie. There's a choice? And why do they feel they have a chance to win? Because we, the American people, have gobbled lie after lie for the past eight years and pretended it was cake. I guess they think we will just keep swallowing and try not to look at the mold. Of course it helps that the majority of mainstream TV outlets are more interested in the, "soap" aspects of this race, than doing their jobs as journalists. We will face very dark days if these two shells of people become the Bobblehead leaders of this country.

From the beginning of this

From the beginning of this story, I have felt that the democrats made a mistake going after Palins experience. The democrats need to label Palin as a liar. That is something that will stick with the public. The convention speech was full of whoppers. So was that first speech she gave accepting McCain’s offer, most notably the bridge to nowhere whopper. She was a commercial fisherman, so I guess she knows a good fish story. "Sarah Palin tells whoppers." That needs to be the theme. That can stick all the way to the election. It can pivot into “it takes real arrogance to lie directly to the American people on your first introduction.” It can pivot into “the American people may find her whoppers amusing, but do we really want Whoopie Goldberg for vice president?” Once someone’s honesty is questioned, it’s hard to get it back. "Sarah Palin tells whoppers." Now Howie Kurtz picks up my whopper meme Howie Kurtz: "Whopper" to say Palin opposed Bridge to Nowhere http://www.americablog.com/2008/09/howie-kurtz-whopper-to-say-palin.html The Arizona senator has made a crusade of battling pork-barrel "earmarks," but the whopper here is that Palin opposed her state's notorious Bridge to Nowhere. http://voices.washingtonpost.com/the-trail/2008/09/08/claiming_the_maverick_brand.html The key is to use the same word over and over again.

Drill, drill, drill will

Drill, drill, drill will produce dribble, dribble, dribble. This is a pure waste for a proud America. We need NOW to invest in an alternate energy infrastructure to produce and transport electricity from alternate sources. Do not confuse wind, fellow Americans, with hot air!

I think Obama gives the

I think Obama gives the voters too much credit. I'm afraid they are stupid. I don't know why he wants to be president. The mess that Bush has left will take at least a decade to repair if it is even possible to fix!

...like I have said many

...like I have said many times - its not about who is better, its about who is the lesser of the evils. Most politicians are inherently evil, and because of this, need to be kept on a short leash. However, if the leash is too long or is lost completely, then you get what we have had 8 years of. Will Obama allow himself to be leashed? Who knows. Maybe we need him to come out and say clearly that Iraq (and Georgia and Afganistan) WAS all about the oil. And maybe he should state that he will dissolve the DHS (which might as well be called the National Research Bureau or the GESTAPO), which provides no discernible security from external threats, but instead is engineered to be an instrument for controlling the US population. Someone needs to stand up and voice truths even if they make many uncomfortable. Then maybe a policy framework can be built that addresses the real problems we face. Is Obama the one who sill stand up? I don't know the answer to that. However, I am sure that McCain will not.

It seems to me that

It seems to me that Olbermann is giving Obama lots of opportunities to take the gloves off and he just won't do it. He just keeps talking about the American people being smart enough to invest in their own well being. Well, if that was the case Bush wouldn't have had the last four years. The American people want a superstar and that's who the Republicans are serving up. If Obama won't punch back and hit hard...say Whopper, or Liar, or whatever you like, but call the damn thing what it is, a Lie, then we're sunk in the trunk of a skunk of another four to eight years of hell, and we can't afford it. I'm sadder and scarder than anything.

Yes, people DO read this and

Yes, people DO read this and people DO care.

I keep getting email from

I keep getting email from my 'conservative' friends which points out that '80% of Alaskans' like Palin. She is a 'straight-shooter', she is against corruption, etc. etc. I think the Dems will have to pre-empt these arguments, or else just keep saying 'Yes, but....Yes, but...." and that's no way to win an election. I would put more pressure on McCain, rather than Palin. He has obvious weaknesses that can be tweaked: his nasty temper, his shooting from the hip. Leave his war record alone. He's not the only guy who was a POW, but probably the only one to become a senator. Just my thoughts.

"Not telling the truth?"

"Not telling the truth?" How about some good old American straight talk: LYING! I want change, but I'm sick of hearing about it. Most of all, I'd like the Obama campaign to get tough. Start attacking. Get rid of all the wishy-washy spokespeople representing the campaign with the news media. Stop complementing McCain before you criticize him - would you praise Osama Bil Ladin's "charismatic leadership" before you attack him? I'm ready to contribute to the Obama campaign, but only AFTER I see some evidence of a straight- talking fighter!

Talking points... Sarah

Talking points... Sarah Palin has made religion one of her talking points. Baptized a Catholic, she later converted to an Evangelical Church. Some reports say she chose a non-denominational faith, others report that she joined a place of worship that was Pentecostal in belief. It was from this Pentecostal pulpit that she preached her mantra that it was God's will that a gas pipe line be built in Alaska. Sarah also used this platform to push for the banning of books that she deemed undesirable and it was from here that she trashed the 1st amendment that denies official support to any particular theology. She also used this method for her pro-life stance that would force any woman who was a victim of rape or incest to suffer the consequences. Sarah is no woman's friend. Palin's beliefs also include "talking in tongues", a "religious" gibberish practiced by members of her church, which no one, not even the one doing the talking can understand. I assume she is talking in tongues when she appears in front of cheering crowds who seem enthralled with this mother of five, and an on the job trainee for vice president of the United States, who cannot distinguish a lie from the truth ...I wonder if they know what she is really saying? I wonder if she does. Palin's fundamentalist faith is comparable to the religion of other devout believers who are known to engage in the handling of poisonous snakes to prove their devotion to their God..yes, .the same God who wants that gas pipeline in Alaska and urges His followers, according to the Gospel by Palin, to trash the 1st amendment and to ban "objectionable" books. The gibberish, "tongues" and the use of snakes in worship supposedly emerge as a true test of the righteousness of the participants. In this case, Palin, by associating with John McCain is submitting herself to the ultimate test. Sarah Palin, along with McCain, who to date has never even been baptized, although he proclaims himself to be a "Christian," are in their element embracing this particular faith. They both talk gibberish and they both seem very comfortable in the company of poisonous snakes in the person of the GOP. It is only fitting that McCain , the professional POW, describes Palin as his "soul-mate." I have nothing against the Pentecostal Church. I do believe the members of this faith should leave my choice of literature to me and stay out of my private and political life. As for the snakes? Where the hell is St. Patrick when you need him?a

Obama clearly has better

Obama clearly has better programs and policies than MCCain, but he's got to SAY SO - doesn't he have a speech critic? He needs to forget the "uh's" and "now look" and the "You know, I mean, it's - I think.." George Bush could do that and still get elected but that's because he had Karl Rove organizing the media and spin. Obama doesn't have that and so he's got to be clear, direct, and convincing. McCain and Palin are clear, direct, and convincing even when they're obviously lying. A lot of people unfortunately can't tell the difference.

SOS to Obama campaign

SOS to Obama campaign peolple! Would someone please tell Senator's Obama and Biden that if they want to reach the "average" American, then MUST USE SIMPLE 5th GRADE READING LEVEL WORDS!!! Speaking eloquently is NOT going to get their ideas across to the middle-class. Speaking on the Campaign trail is not the same as speaking before Congress; Middle-Class Americans need to know exactly what your message is, no need to impress anyone with fancy rhetoric. There is a comprehension issue here!!! My strategy suggestions to the campaign are 1. Pick three or four issues to focus on that McCain and Palin have lied about, stick with these issues, do not deviate from them. Talk about them every time you are in front of the media. 2 . Use 5th grade level vocabulary words to tell middle-class American's why voting for a McCain/ Palin's will be harmful to Americans; don't assume that just because you are speaking to Keith Olbermann in an interview that every viewer watching has the same comprehension level as Keith does!!!! 3. Take the gloves off! You are in a fight to WIN! We, the American People, have invested our hard earned money and time on your campaign to get you into the White House and get our Country back on track! Don't turn into a spineless candidate like Kerry did in 2004, or you will quickly loose your supporters!

"The Making of Sarah Palin"

"The Making of Sarah Palin" a simple story of one woman who had the courage to face her ignorance in the name of serving her country. Compelling and funny. The story begins with Sarah and friends at a restaurant talking about the menu when approached by 3 men in very nice Italian made suits, when one of the men ask her if she would like to be John McCain's running mate her reaction is one of surprise and curiosity. "I'm not really sure what the Vice President does..." the men assure her that she doesn't really need to know they will take care of all that for her "The campaign needs you!" and with that she proudly proclaims "I'LL DO IT!" - The movie follows her through the tireless. day in and day out indoctrination while her husband asks quietly "Is it going to be a problem being Union?" he's dismissed to another room, he leaves mumbling "I can take a withdrawal you know.. I don't have to stay in the Union, just let me know..." Propose Fran Dresher for Sarah and a relatively unknown actor for her husband.

I think that Obama must get

I think that Obama must get more aggressive with McCain but most of all, I think he had better look very carefully into our corrupt election system that brought all the horror into play in this country. Counting the ballots is the thing!! We must be assured of a fair count or it won't matter anything about the presidential race- the Republicans are so assured that they can win through manipulating the ballots because they have had the experience of doing it twice (or more) already.

Obama keeps waiting for his

Obama keeps waiting for his time at debating McNut, but what if McNut gets smart and avoids debating Obama, and keeps his spin a-spinin"? The ol saying a good defense is a good offense. Time is getting too short.

Why are the candidates

Why are the candidates skirting the real issues when it comes to the Energy debate? Even I realize that the real solutions to the energy problem have already been offered to the government by off world civilizations. Yes, I am talking about contacts that have been made over the last 60 years with actual civilizations that have made contact with the governments of this earth. Oh, I know that all of that is denied, but those on the inside know that we have been lied to. This whole energy issue is actually a red herring, and until the powers within our government are willing to come clean on this, we are all just forced to live this lie. Fortunately, there is a very good possibility that this will be rectified in the middle of October, the 14th of October to be exact, when we are promised that a very large Mother Ship from outer space is going to appear in the skies over the Southern United States. Not just for a moment, but a minimum of 3 days. GO ahead, Google that date, 14 October 2008, and you can read the information for yourself. Oh I know, everybody is going to say this is a hoax. Well, what if it isn't. And think about it, Why would an even this important and this far reaching be happening 3 weeks before the election. Also, it is happening on the very day of Canada's election. And frankly I hope it really scares people into taking action. I hope that this event will destroy the lie once and for all. This great space ship will be here for one reason. To say, hello to earth, and to announce their presence to the world. And they come in Love and Joy to start a dialogue, not with the governments of the world, but with the people of this earth. And this just might be the biggest event that has ever happened on this planet. And I certainly hope that Barack Obama will have an appropriate welcome speech prepared to greet them on behalf of humanity.

I agree with an earlier

I agree with an earlier comment: Obama should simply ignore Palin and zero in on McCain. Why should the veep candidate merit so much attention (tho that;s what the Repubs want)? Focus on the McBush realitiy. Focus on the Keating Five stuff, and the refusal to fund care for returning troops and the "Bomb, Bomb, Bomb Iran" segment and the 12 houses and the self-described rash approach to making decisions that are often wrong (but he lives with them) and his multi-lobbyist campaign committee. Wouldn't hurt to remind people, howsoever gently, that he had a yearlong affair with Cindy before he ran out on his not so well wife. McBush is a hollow man and his ineptness and duplicity should be hammered at.

The only way for Dems to win

The only way for Dems to win this election is to take it straight into the faces of the right wing radicals and tell them they will never have the right to tell another person how to live their life. Hammer home to all your Repugnicans that Individual liberty is the hallmark of America not their alleged god or corporate bank account. Love and respect yourself enough to state the obvious - America cannot be ignorant and free. Speak up every single time your hear a Republican speaking their party line drivel and you will see how they recoil at the horror of facing the Truth!

Has anyone ever seriously

Has anyone ever seriously looked into consistency or pattern of right-wingnut-trolls who respond to this and other liberal web sites? It seems like there is often one response and it often happens early on in the discussion. It often shows that whatever person (or organization) wrote it obviously hasn't read any of the other posts and even seems like they haven't read the article either. It's just automatic gainsaying without presenting any actual argument. The pentagon has openly admitted that they're doing this. This site is one of the most important voices of the liberal point of view in America, since there is no serious threat of liberal views appearing on television or radio. Wouldn't this site be one of the pentagon's prime targets? I'm curious if other honest liberals see the same pattern. If I'm not just imagining this I would think Truthout could do something about it. Either way, I'm open minded about the truth. I'm just not sure which truth would be worse to hear: that "trolls" are real and we're just witnessing anti-democratic propaganda first hand, OR that some people really are unable to question the right-wing and the BIG LIE.

Both Democrats and Winger

Both Democrats and Winger Republicans are deluded. The wight-wing Republicans believe that character, by which they mean personality, is more important than facts. The Democrats can't believe that everyone doesn't think like they do, that facts and past performance are the most important things. Sorry folks, but this is not the country you think it is, and "we" are not the people you think we are. We voted in Nixon, twice. Reagan, twice (and would have made him king if he hadn't obviously gone gaga). We voted in Clinton twice, even though he's a Neoconservative and much farther to the right than Nixon thought of being. We allowed Bush to be president twice. We obviously have no sense, no honor, no conscience, and no memory. We get the president (and the congress) we deserve.

As to the "Drill, Drill,

As to the "Drill, Drill, Drill. Drill Now" mantra, I have yet to hear or read from anyone about the oil companies' huge inventory of CAPPED wells. Why hasn't someone in the press articulated the well-known practice of drilling and capping oil and gas wells to manipulate supply, price, and profit? Please count capped wells and don't rely on any information provided by the oil industry. You ought to know that there are thousands of capped oil and gas wells on federal and private lands. They will be uncapped and will begin producing when the opportunity to maximize profits and to leverage market share is evident. Also, there is NO mechanism in place to ensure that new supplies of U.S. oil will be distributed only for the American market. That means any new supplies will be put on the global market and will have little or no effect on processing at overcapacity U.S. refineries or U.S. pump prices. Please, t r u t h o u t, get some ink flowing on these facts about capped oil and gas wells, and the inability of American consumers to affect a price at the pump based on additional drilling on U.S. soil, previous leases, or new lease areas.

Agree with SOS -(see

Agree with SOS -(see below) To Senator Obama: Less is More! Don't list your points in clauses. Speak them to people who have never heard them before. Short sentences. Like Hemingway! Less is More. GO - Barack!!

Why won't he say the words,

Why won't he say the words, "they're lying."..? Why does he couch each statement so gently? Is Obama going to step up and speak for the country? This guy's got to take off the gloves. The republican machine is reducing this to an "American Idol" style decision, literally appealing to the lizard brains of people and Obama's sounding all intellectual. I hope and pray for his success, but I'm scared he's going to get steamrolled like the others who came before him.

Whoppers!! Great Idea: Palin

Whoppers!! Great Idea: Palin is a fisherman, and we all know fishermen love Whoppers - Now here are a few of hers!! -- etc etc ---> C'mon Barack, no more mister nice-guy -- Whopper is just the right word - (Remember how "flip-flopper" helped kill Kerry? Well why not WHOPPER for McCain & Palin!!

Very frustrating to listen

Very frustrating to listen to Obama avoid saying LIE. "They are not telling the truth". It was sounding like Kerry. WAKE UP OBAMA. Get firey as you were in the beginning. Do not abandon the progressives- (THE LEFT). They got you here in the first place and they are left on the sidelines now. You have gone to the right- (FISA!!What is that about?) , and you have lost your fire- probably because your "advisers", (the same that drove Gore and Kerry into the loosing zone) are telling you what to do. Stop doing that- and listen to your own ideas. Otherwise the USA, as we love it, will be nothing but ancient history

Sarah Palin is doing all she

Sarah Palin is doing all she can to ban books in Alaska, gave speeches in support of an Alaska successionist party and thinks global warming has nothing to do with human activity and Olbermann is the lunatic fringe? Sarah Palin was mayor of a podunk town of 6000 and came to power as governor of a state with fewer people the the major cities in most states, and Obama is unqualified? Obama who has run a campaign for 19 months and defeated all comers including some of the mst powerful politicians in America? Who are you trying to kid? And why? Could it have something to do with the fact that the "lunatic fringe" reporter has touched a nerve when he says that McCain has no issues to run on so name calling is his only weapon?

Listening a second time----

Listening a second time---- boring!!! Obama- speak the truth- they are LYING!!!

Yeah!!!! Keith

Yeah!!!! Keith Olbermann!!! Hopefully Sen. Obama heard that question you asked him about simplifying (dumbing down) his message so that the repetition of sound bites would have a better chance to sink in and be understood by those who don't enjoy the privilege of the greater awareness that your listeners enjoy! By the way, Keith and Rachel ROCKED during the conventions, especially the one in Denver. NBC is making a BG mistake.

My fear is that Senator

My fear is that Senator Obama, who is a good and fearless person, does not really know just how STUPID the American public are! Look at 2004 when W was elected by a 4 million person margin because of the right-wing nut case religious faction heeding the voices from their holier than thou pulpits. Ya...they're stupid enough to elect McCain, and it makes me want to throw up thinking about it. Please, please, Senator Obama. Keep saying they're lying; keep showing they're lying; keep taking the high-wire, high ground and standing firm, talking the issues and being...well...just YOU. Kudos on Biden; if you hadn't run, he was had my vote from here to Sunday. Professor Nan Fandel

Obama is smart-- really

Obama is smart-- really really smart. However, he woefully underestimates how almost pathologically STUPID the American people are. Evidence: 8 yrs. of W. Evidence: Majority believe in existence of angels-- real angels-- and demons. Evidence: significant numbers of disaffected Hillary voters like Palin despite her being against the rights of a woman to choose (she is a PRE Lifer) whether or not to be a baby factory. Despite the implications that such a position implies women are morally and intellectually inferior. Adios equal rights... In a generation or 2, adios voting as well. Americans do love and respect war and warriors (evidence: W and McCain's popularity). Americans hate "wimps" (evidence: "success" of Kerry campaign). So the perception of a halting, "caving", and "weak" Obama is handing McCain/Palin/Cheney the keys to the White House. He has to attack McCain/ Palin on issues. 527s have to attack Palin on her wacko religion that places Alaska as the "refuge" for America as in "what if she has the nuclear trigger while taking a vacation in Alaska???" Can anybody say hallelujah and "KAAABOOM?" Stir up some doubt and good ol' fashioned fear. The high road gets you high and dry. Even LBJ found out ya have to not be afraid to fight down and dirty if you want to win. Or can we afford 4 more years and reams of "I'm sorrrry... we tried.." ala Kerry et al.?

I've seen Sara Palin and

I've seen Sara Palin and heard her speak. From what I've seen and heard she DOESN'T know what she's talking about. Also she's Not pro-life, she's pro-birth. There's a BIG difference. Wake up America. Listen and learn.

He's not that smart. If he

He's not that smart. If he were, he would stand up to these lying sleazeballs and try to reel back in the Liberal base. "If we just keep on being clear about how we are going to rebuild this economy, then I think we are going to end up winning this campaign." He keeps saying he's being specific about his plans, everywhere he says they are being vague and he's saying specifically what he will do. Where, specifically, does he spell out his plans? Ralph Nader has been taking action to fix govt. for over 43 years, and he's specific in his plans. He answers to WE THE PEOPLE. Barack Obama is afraid to rock the boat, maybe if he's PC enough and never actually calls these criminals "liars and thieves" they won't steal too many of his votes. They won't steal too many... just enough.

All these candidates are

All these candidates are speaking to us out here who believe these lies and evasions, and compromise with the facts and then vote for the lesser of evils. The electorate are ignorant of truth. They are not interested in reality. Personality is out in front. Is McCain's suffering the reason some of us want to REWARD him with this office ?.

There's a theme here,

There's a theme here, Barack. SIMPLIFY _ SIMPLIFY - S-I-M=P-L-I-F-Y! Call a spade a SPADE instead of a dirty shovel. Juxtapose facts against fibs in soundbites instead of long explanations or assertions that appear to be only your opinion. CITE SOURCES. We're working our buns off out here to help your campaign so HELP US HELP YOU. You don't have to yell, or get mean, or lie as the Republicans are doing. Just be specific - in ads and in your interviews. Stop trusting us to be smart and HELP us be smart. Fightthesmears is only good for those curious enough to go look. Urge us to go there, to read or tune in to debunking articles by non-partisan fact finders. Stop with "the American people are..." How 'bout "the people of my country tell me.... The people of my country need...." Get Keith Oberman to edit your speeches? <:)

Obama is wrong about one

Obama is wrong about one thing. He said "the American people aren't stupid". Oh yes they are. Americans are incredibly gullible, ignorant misinformed and stupid. That's really the whole problem. If the people weren't so stupid McCain and the GOP would be looking at 8-12% of the vote. Not anything like 50% or more. (And if they read this, their stubborn and stupid reaction would be probably 80% of them voting for McCain). McCain is pretty goddamned stupid himself....BTW...mainly due to his age. The American people have the lessons of Reagan (when they elected an Alzeimer's patient) to guide them. Age is not an issue? Excuse me? And what about Junior Bush in the brains dept? Yeah, the American people are too stupid to govern themselves? the fallacy of democracy. The world is laughing painfully. anonymousource.com

Call your friends and family

Call your friends and family in OHIO, MICHIGAN, COLORADO, VIRGINIA, NEW HAMPSHIRE, as well as Florida and Nevada. That's what I am doing from Tennessee. McCain must win bascically all of these to screw us. This is a ground game thing now. Aside from the debates, there will be very little new information from here on out. This is as much about getting my old white Mom and Dad to the polls as it is about anybody reading this. (They are 80 and in Kentucky and voting Obama!) I no longer buy into this "age and treachery will defeat youth and skill" idea any more. GO DIRECTLY from here to your Email list and phone and get to work. The future is ours. Or not. Your choice. Defeat the stupid. Courage. Hope.

McLiar/Pathetic. Lets just

McLiar/Pathetic. Lets just refer to the Republican ticket for what they are, McLiar and Pathetic.

American Society

American Society Absolutely agree with comments about the majority of American Society is not smart enough to see what is black and what is white. The shocking blockbuster "Fahrenheit 9/11" did not convinced people. GOP and Bush family should be banned from politics for years, because they blocked medical insurance for ALL AMERICAN CHILDREN. IT'S INSANE!!! Only burgers, cola, NFL, MLB, NBA, MTV and movies are what American Society thinks about. Million thanks to Keith who is not afraid to state facts and call Mr. Bush a LIAR.
