Palin Can Launch Us Back in Time

The author is former US Army Brigadier General (retired) Janis L. Karpinski.

"We shall never have rights until we take them, or respect until we command it," said Belva Lockwood, activist and the first female lawyer to argue before the United States Supreme Court.

Hmmmmm. My intuition is kicking into high gear on the nomination of Sarah Palin as vice president on the Republican ticket. Hmmmmm. It is haunting me. There is something sneaky behind her and methinks it is the devious orchestration of Karl Rove. Months of criticism for Barack Obama's allegedly short supply of expertise, then McCain selects a true novice as a partner on his ticket. Does this make any sense at all?

I'm afraid it does. Palin is bringing new life to the ticket. McCain was in dire straits and absolutely knew he was going to lose the election on his merits, so he pulled the proverbial bunny out of his hat - presto, Palin.

I know enough about Palin's character to assess her as ill-equipped, clueless and unprepared to take control of our nation in the event of McCain's early demise or incapacitation, much less qualified to serve as the commander in chief of all military forces. Unfortunately for Palin, leadership is not derived by a process of osmosis. She does not automatically qualify for commander in chief or get to check the "Military Service" block because she has a son in the Alaska National Guard who is deployed to Iraq, or because she dons a camouflage uniform and knows how to shoot straight. Military leadership develops with a true concern for the lives of soldiers and civilians placed under your command. Military leadership requires the leader to be ready, willing and able upon assuming command; to be able immediately to execute those responsibilities without hesitation, to have the tools and skills to command and lead. Leadership comes from experience of "walking the ground where your soldiers will fight" as opposed to working and planning in a vacuum with little regard for the soldiers serving on your watch. It means the commander in chief will never use military force and take the nation and the military to war until every other option is exhausted, and then only with the greatest intelligence information available to ensure a course leading to victory. If it isn't there, you aren't going to find it in a desk drawer or in the process of going to war.

Palin wants desperately to be accepted as tough and capable in the skills she sees as critical to being as tough as any man - tough talk, tough walk and tough as nails. Sarah Palin apparently thinks because she claims to have the skills, we must trust her and take her at her word. Note the absence of military leadership skills in the current administration, due largely to the sum total lack of military experience amongst the elected and appointed officials.

There is something almost sinister in Palin's attempts to seduce the voting public. She has a "come hither" look all of the time, and dares anyone, men or women, but especially men, to approach her or challenge her. Pay attention. Nobody believes qualifying as Miss Alaska in the Miss America Pageant really prepares you for service as the vice president of the United States, let alone as the president of the United States of America. Obama is right, although he may have chosen the wrong animal to use in the comparison - put lipstick on a soccer mom, as opposed to a pit bull, and you still have a soccer mom, not a pit bull. The fierceness of a pit bull, which Palin is trying to use as proof of her ability to serve as the vice president, is ridiculous at best and sadly ironic. Pit bulls are senseless and out of control when angry; they are certainly far from being of good mind, rationale, organized or focused. Her personal comparisons to Hillary Clinton are insulting to Clinton. Senator Clinton did not stoop to use of her sexuality as a means of attracting votes or attention. She is articulate and stays on message, whether in the primaries or campaigning for Obama. Hillary's supporters, men and women, accepted her for her experience, her credentials and her qualifications, deservedly so, unlike Palin who is trying to steal mileage on the shirttails of Hillary. You can easily recollect memorable events of Hillary's campaign, but you will not remember her parading about or flirting with her supporters or the media. She did not behave in such a manner. Her wardrobe aside, Hillary Clinton was competing on a level playing field and behaved accordingly, like an intelligent, confident and capable candidate. This is what women hope for and seek to achieve. Sarah Palin's behavior sets our progress back by decades and encourages the fashionable use of sexuality as the tool to measure success.

I spent more than 28 years in and around the military, mostly as a member of the Army Officer Corps. I saw what women think they must do in order to fit in with their male counterparts and feel a part of the male bastion of control. Sarah Palin is cut from the same mold as these women who were desperate to fit in with male colleagues - desperately trying to prove herself as tough as, or tougher than, "the boys" who are competing with her. Palin sets the stage with stories of her prowess in murdering wolves, moose and caribou from a helicopter platform vantage point, begging the question, "C'mon boys, don't you think I am tough enough?"

Men want to screw her, literally - it is a fantasy of many men, particularly those in the high power, high profile assignments, and she knows it. She uses her sexuality, and men's vulnerability, to intimidate them and expose their weaknesses. They imagine what she is like in bed; they fantasize about screwing the vice president of the United States because they have never had this chance. They imagine what she is like as a sex object and they drool over possibilities, not necessarily thinking the fantasies will come to fruition, instead focusing on four years of possibilities. She projects the willingness to let them fantasize. She is not businesslike, rather power hungry and control-like, offering, subtly and directly, suggestions of her feistiness and daring men to try and conquer her. Somewhere in the mix, she attempts to say something noteworthy to demonstrate her readiness and capabilities to serve as the vice president of the United States. She wants to be seen as a sexual object because she has a track record of success using the same techniques at increasing levels of responsibilities. Sarah Palin tried, unsuccessfully, to get credit for foreign affairs and international experience through three stopovers, and walkovers, involving Germany, Kuwait and Iraq. Many officers and soldiers found the same low road to "credible international and combat experience" by staying comfortably and safely, and often only occasionally, in Kuwait, while real soldiers, men and women, crossed the border into Iraq, and spent a year or longer in harm's way. The coveted "right shoulder patch," symbolizing combat duty, was awarded equally to any and all deployed officers and soldiers, those serving in Iraq as well as those serving in better and safer assignments anywhere but in Iraq. This may have inspired Palin to claim international experience involving Kuwait (short stopover) and Iraq (walked across the border into Iraq) and Germany (flight layover). This type of exaggeration migrates to the unimaginable - claiming some quasi-military experience because she stood near a soldier, or because her son is serving in Iraq or because she wore cammies while hunting. It is not beyond the thinkable.

Sarah Palin may be responsible for breaking through another level of the glass ceiling by being the vice-presidential candidate on the Republican ticket and she deserves credit for this.

Palin, however, is a dangerous choice and her style goes against the grain of feminists and women everywhere. We spent years seeking equality, and ask only for a level playing field where we can find credit for our accomplishments and capabilities and the opportunities to compete fairly. Sarah Palin can launch us back in time and remove years of progress, albeit slow and incomplete. She encourages men and women to be drawn first to the sexuality and beauty of a woman before making a decision about her credibility, intelligence and leadership. There is abundant truth in the age-old saying "beauty is only skin deep." We need and deserve a vice-presidential candidate who offers far more than "skin deep" - her absolute lack of substance on the issues; her lack of experience, particularly in the international and foreign affairs environment; her lack of a sound economic policy to regain control of our national treasure; and her insistence on propelling herself as tough and capable because she can murder wildlife when there is virtually no chance of missing, are the issues of substance. The fact she refuses to discuss any of the issues is troubling. Voters need to take a deep breath and return to reality in the aftermath of the hype created by Sarah Palin herself. Pay attention - she does not have international experience or foreign affairs capabilities simply because she can see Russia from her backyard in Alaska.

Sarah Palin is amazingly popular and she is dangerous. She is George Bush in disguise, in terms of policies and principles. Karl Rove is in the middle of this and we all know what Karl Rove did for President Bush and what he did to every American. Keep this in mind when throwing support to the ticket of McCain and Palin. The legitimate concerns about McCain being joined at the hip with the president and the potential for four (and potentially eight) more years of the same worthless policies of this administration seem to pale in comparison when considering the strong attachment, admiration and support Sarah Palin gives to this administration.

This is an exemplary

This is an exemplary analysis of Palin's power executed with military precision (as they say), for it is a story best told by a woman in the ranks. Thank you for this.

Wow! Someone finally said

Wow! Someone finally said it .. and someone who is credible on the topic: Not only is Palin thoroughly unqualified for the office she seeks (and the one she might inherit), she is using her sexuality to try to win .. not at all unlike a 'beauty contest'. Thank you, General Karpinski, for your frank and revealing essay about "Miss" Wasilla.

I agree with the substance

I agree with the substance of this article...that Palin must not, cannot, be taken seriously as a Vice Presidential candidate, and that it an affront to women to think that she is anything more than a political tool capitalizing on outdated attitudes toward women. However, there was some comic relief: "Palin sets the stage with stories of her prowess in murdering wolves, moose and carrion from a helicopter platform vantage point.." I thought carrion was already dead. Perhaps the writer means caribou?

Well said. This analysis

Well said. This analysis wouldn't have the same punch coming from a man. I've been waiting for all of the strong, accomplished women to weigh in on this. Where is HRC? This nomination is sexist to the core. It is demeaning to both men and women.

Fascinating insight into the

Fascinating insight into the sexual aspect of Sarah Palin's persona and behavior during this campaign. The only part of this essay I would take issue with is Gen. Karpinski's suggestion that Karl Rove must have had a hand in Palin's selection. My understanding is that Rove wanted Mitt Romney, for VP, and John McCain wanted Joseph Lieberman. Unable to come to terms, McCain finally pointed to Palin's name on a list and basically said, "OK, then, I'll take that one." At that point, Palin had not been interviewed, and McCain had not even met her. This was McCain's first big decision, made as a visceral reaction to opposition — an extremely frightening glimpse into this man's executive decision-making processes. Can you imagine his finger on the red button?

Courageous, astute,

Courageous, astute, thoughtful- one of the best exegeses of the Palin phenomena I've seen. Gen. Karpinski's credibility is unimpeachable, as a woman with real command experience, and as a person of moral substance who was scapegoated by the chickenhawks partially because of her gender.

Thank you Ms. Karpinsk,i for

Thank you Ms. Karpinsk,i for your well reasoned and well spoken "verbage." You are a breath of fresh air, my sister.

I read this with an enormous

I read this with an enormous sigh of relief. I knew there was something dishonest about Gov'r Palin but couldn't put my finger on it. The General has, and with unequaled clarity and force. Everything Palin has said to this point frightens me. The growl, and the "Bring it on!" theme to her speeches, town hall, and interviews. How did she initially respond to the doctrine question--something like, "Charlie, exactly what part do you mean?"...Liar.

This is a long-term gimmick.

This is a long-term gimmick. Palin is clearly not qualified for the potential task(s) at hand. If she makes it to the white house, it will be disastrous. Which is exactly what the GOP wants. Not only will she be a pretty puppet, she will be a pathetic example of what women can bring to the office of VP (or President). She will be a failure. This is Rovian junior high school politics in full gear. Turn her into a joke so future female candidates won't have a chance.

Well stated, General! With

Well stated, General! With this in mind, a group of volunteers just launched a site that puts volunteers who want to travel to swing states in touch with financial sponsors and swing state host families, and allows the sponsor to track the progress and on-the-ground numbers of the volunteer they've sponsored. It’s sort of a political hybrid of Craig's List and Team-in-Training and a pretty cool concept - check it out here: http://ObamaTravel.org/ And the Facebook group is here: http://www.new.facebook.com/group.php?gid=24260709380

Now if only the right wing

Now if only the right wing undecideds and recent move-overs could read this in loud print! If only eyes could be open and ears unleashed to truly hear the comic-tragedy of Palin's rhetoric and beliefs. Geez, she's dangerous to all of us!

I wish every person

I wish every person considering voting republican would read--and really consider--this article before voting.

I contemplate Palin

I contemplate Palin campaigning - and even more possibly in office - with revulsion. But I have two issues with Gen Karpinski's otherwise welcome piece. 1. "Sarah Palin may be responsible for breaking through another level of the glass ceiling by being the vice-presidential candidate on the Republican ticket and she deserves credit for this." No. She was propelled into this position by men - following Rove. One could say she sold herself for the position. 2. I have no respect for H R Clinton - who voted for the AUMF, who did not oppose the Patriot Act - violating her oath to defend the Constitution. Btw: I'm a reetired Air Force officer with twenty years' service in WWII and Korea.

Bluntly, the author of this

Bluntly, the author of this article does not know enough about Sarah Palin to make the conclusions she has reached. Most of what she said about qualifications to be Commander in Chief would also apply to Obama, and Biden as well. If one were to look at this article with an unbiased analysis, you would have to conclude that the author had very little or no facts, but was strictly speaking with opinions and unfounded assumptions. And I would have to admit that what I have heard about the author may not be all true, as it was mostly through the media, but if I use the same analysis and conclusion process as her, I would have to say she was not fit to command either. It's easy to jump to conclusions whith little or incorrwect information. Lastly, one woman or group of women do not have the right to assume that they speak for the wants, desires and goals of all women.

Karpinski said: "Palin sets

Karpinski said: "Palin sets the stage with stories of her prowess in murdering wolves, moose and caribou from a helicopter platform vantage point..." So she didn't write carrion. Ya gotta' like her use of the word "murdering". This is not hunting.

"Men want to screw her

"Men want to screw her [Palin], literally - it is a fantasy of many men..." Fantasy? Yeah, but what are you going to talk about in the morning with a woman [Palin] who has less intellectual prowess than W. Besides that, yielding to such a fantasy could have the misfortune of watching it turn into a nightmare. Might find the barracuda. No thanks.

What an excellent

What an excellent thoughtful-- steel trap observation of the truly frightening spectacle we are seeing of Palin. Thank you for speaking out from your position of unimpeachable authority. It is time to STOP THIS MADNESS. Can this woman lie or WHAT?? Maybe with this new economic business disaster Sara's complete ignorance will take on a more take off the rose colored glasses look. And, let's not forget the focus on McCain's actions during the S&L issues. Perhaps these subtle --and not so subtle--tricks of distractin us will not work this time.

Fundamentalist Women as

Fundamentalist Women as Anti-Feminists: Karpinski's excellent article may be just the tip of the iceberg. "Wives submit to your husbands" is one of the mantras of fundamentalist families like that of Palin. Thus Palin is almost certainly far more deferential to her spouse's opinions than we normally expect of official spouses. The recent CNN article puzzling why Todd Palin has played such a central role in so many of Sarah Palin's activities may betray this fundamentalist approach to family life ("Todd Palin: 'First Dude' or Shadow Governor?"). Women like Palin who come from Assemblies of God churches that officially emphasize that the Bible is inerrant and authoritative often take very seriously the biblical statements about husbands being "head" of their wives "just as Christ is head of the church" and women therefore needing to "submit to their husbands as the church does to Christ" (Ephesians 5:22-32; Colossians 4:18). Many Assemblies of God churches, especially in rural areas like one finds in Alaska, even emphasize the verses about wives submitting to their husbands just as "Sarah [!] obeyed Abraham, calling him 'lord' " (1 Peter 3:1-6). Perhaps the use of "Sarah" in this biblical passage makes it even more relevant, since so many fundamentalists named after biblical characters tend to idolize and try to imitate the biblical figure whose name they share. Sarah Palin's denomination (the Assemblies of God) does allow women to preach because it emphasizes that the Holy Spirit can speak through anyone, regardless of gender or education. This is why one often hears an Assemblies of God church service suddenly interrupted by a lay person (occasionally even a zealous teenager) in the midst of the congregational seating speaking an unsolicited ad hoc "prophecy" that has reputedly come directly from God. Yet the fundamentalism of the Assemblies of God has always made many of its members and leaders uncomfortable with giving too much liberty to women because the male leaders know that the Bible says that a woman "should not be allowed to teach or exercise authority over a man, but to remain silent" (1 Timothy 2:11-12). Some Pentecostals have tried to reconcile such verses to the practice of allowing women to preach by saying that these verses refer only to family life or some very isolated situation. Whether or not this effort to reconcile contradictory elements of their theology is correct, the numerous biblical passages that emphasize women submitting to their husbands are taken very seriously by many fundamentalist families. So maybe the problem is not that Palin has far less experience than other women whom McCain could have chosen. Perhaps the real issue is that the McCain ticket is really John McCain, Todd Palin, and Sarah Palin--in that purely biblical order.

I'd be the last to defend

I'd be the last to defend Palin, but Karpinski's piece strikes be more as an uninformed rant than a well-argued position. That's a shame; combining a more level-headed tone with military cred would have been much more powerful. This past weekend's New York Times piece on Palin is all you really need to understand what a disaster she'd be.

The HAARP base is in

The HAARP base is in Alaska. Karpinski’s military experience will surely enable her to think this one through: in what measure, if any, could the selection of the lady governor from Alaska to the presidential ticket be related to military interests concening HAARP? You see, I am convinced that when pondering matters related to who will be or won’t be in power, one must always first ask a fundamental question: what does the Pentagon want? My intuition is also kicking on the nomination of Sarah Palin, and what my radar neatly registers is: the HAARP base is in Alaska! That, together with Alaska's oil reserves, leads to the thought that whoever was governor of Alaska, no matter the gender, would have been the Pentagon's choice.

Right on! Gen. Karpinski and

Right on! Gen. Karpinski and Thank you ! commentor "Former Member of Palin's Denomination" for giving us Chapter and Verse of the institutionalized sexism of Palin's chosen church. I have long thought McCains hawkish Iraq stance has it's roots in his desire to make the Vietnam War come out "right", and I also wonder how much of his Palin choice was nostalgia for his "bad boy" womanizing "good old days". I am convinced Palin was chosen because she is a "tabula rasa" blank slate that the neocons can manage and form if she's elected VP and dominate if the 72 yr old McCain dies or follows through on the suggestion he might only stay for one term. Rove and his masters don't play around. They calculate every move. STEPFORD SARAH is their political wet dream come true!

Maybe it's just that easy,

Maybe it's just that easy, imagine... every lady eventually could head to the plastic surgeon, buy the looks and then get the job. Who knows? Classical music used to be about the spirit, and now it's contaminated by a parade of perfect looks and overt sexuality. It's invasive and simply everywhere= like a virus. I personally love the normal, the expressive, the homely. But then, I'm a woman. S santory

Thank you, General

Thank you, General Karpinski, for pointing out that this lipstick-wearing, opportunistic, self-appointed empress has no clothes. Your voice and that of Gloria Steinhem are the two I would trust most and most want to hear at a time like this, when the mainstream media is lapping hungrily at the Palin-trough (hey--she's telegenic!), and both of you were published right here in our beloved Truthout. Everyone who reads this, please, help get the word out.

Thank you General Karpinski!

Thank you General Karpinski! Ever since Palin was unveiled, I have been at a loss for words to describe the horror unfolding before our eyes. The propaganda machine... er... mainstream media has certainly not done it's job. You have found the words to describe it. Thank you.

Wrong about pitbulls, right

Wrong about pitbulls, right about Palin. I know, pitbulls. I work with pitbulls and live with a pitbull. Sarah Palin, to her shame, is no pitbull. This is a very well-thought-out piece and I tend to agree with the author. Clearly, however, she does not know anything about pitbulls!

It is true that most men,

It is true that most men, however tough, (including me),are vulnerable to seductive and manipulating women, and Palin is certainly that, -albeit on the morning after, when it is too late, we have our regrets. It is said that Ho Chi Minh actually castrated himself to avoid that very trap focusing solely on saving his country from the yokes of colonialism and slavery. It may even come to that with one of us, just to save our country from our own excesses, but maybe an honest woman like Ms Karpinsky showing the truth can help short on that. Let's focus on the real heroines we might want to "embrace", rather than "screw", and maybe we can get there without the knife.

Is it possible we've missed

Is it possible we've missed the point? Consider this: the regime that currently controls the Administration - a shadowy cartel of corporate businessmen, millionaries, lobbyists and former intelligence operatives and a gaggle of puppet politicians - desires to hold on to power at any cost, but they realised some time after 2004 that "their boy" - Bush 43 - was extremely unpopular and public opinion was running against that form of mentality... so they look about for someone that's a republican 'maverick' - someone democrats might actually trust and (dare they think it) vote for!!!! - Only they dont REALLY want this guy - he is merely a pretext for getting those who wouldn't ordinarilty vote republican to vote republican... he's merely the decoy to bring in the ducks - anyway, as McCain's history will attest, he cant be trusted - so they make sure there is someone that they can trust who is in a position to take over as soon as McCain dies, which is completely credible owing to his history of melanoma, and who's going to question a sudden virulent and agressive cancer that kills him off within weeks of the election? No one. And then the powerful shadow figures that "own" us will have done what appeared to be impossible - installed "BUSH 44" in the guise of none other than Sarah Palin.

REPUBLICAN SHAME: offering a

REPUBLICAN SHAME: offering a candidate[sex makes no difference] with less credentials than a small[HEARTLAND] town demands of their consolidated schools' district superintendent! save the 'shoot the moose'--a computerized mechanized chase-down of animal with a brain the size of a small fist is laughable. just what to expect from the man who graduated #894 of 899student class! thank you General Karpinski for your analysis.

Oh God, we all remember

Oh God, we all remember these women from the 70's feminist movement. We called them male identified women. She is frightening. With the failing economy, endless war and incompetence there is more behind her than we can see. If I were McCain, I would hire a food taster. Think if she is president she will appoint Jeb to the VP slot?

JK's sexual comments are way

JK's sexual comments are way off the mark. I am a heterosexual male, and I would no more like to screw S Palin than I would like to screw George W Bush, i.e., not at all. Palin is simply a female version of Bush: a fundamentalist, ignorant, long-time member of the Christian right. That single fact is enough to disqualify the McCain/Palin ticket. After the past 8 years, to vote for another Christian Taliban politician should be unthinkable. If this were a decent society, they would be polling closer to 5% than 50%.

Little real content here. I

Little real content here. I would add, though, that more than a few young white women seem to have a bit of an erotic pull toward Obama, or is it simply a misplaced maternal instinct?

I'm one of the few who had

I'm one of the few who had actually heard of Appalling Palin before she was chosen and I KNEW SHE WAS NOT FIT TO SERVE IN A DEMOCRATIC GOVERNMENT. I knew she was a Creationist and End Timer and that was good enough for me to listen to her VP speech with contempt and suspicion. As a woman, I want to recoil in shame that THIS is the woman we are supposed to choose. Just think if she does make to the Presidency, CHENEY COULD KEEP HIS JOB IN THE BUNKER. Heaven help us. AMERICA WAKE UP!!!

Thanks for putting this

Thanks for putting this sleazy, clueless moose-snuffer in her place. A McCain/Palin presidency would be a major disaster, especially after eight years of Bush. We need recovery time, not more sickness.

If memory serves, Janis

If memory serves, Janis Karpinski is indeed a "former" bigadier general. I distinctly remember reading that she had been retired as as colonel. Something to do with Abu Ghraib, no doubt. This is not to detract from what she has written, merely to set what I hope my memory tells me. I rather doubt that the O-7 grade was restored. "President Bush has demoted Army Reserve Brig. Gen. Janis Karpinski, who was in charge of Abu Ghraib during the prison abuse scandal in 2003, after an extensive investigation, the Pentagon said Thursday. Now a colonel, Karpinski was formally relieved of command of the 800th military police brigade last month."

Nailed it. Palin is the

Nailed it. Palin is the perfect judas goat for women, and a siren song for men. Karl Rove said that distractions like Ms. Palin tend to have a shelf life of about 60 days max. I programmed a simulation using the Dijkstra path finding algorithm and a Markov Decision Process heuristic, and viola! it does tend to confirm Rove's assertion as a model of distracting persons long enough to destroy the chances of arriving at a goal (saving the USA as a democracy). You don't have to fool all the people all the time; just some of the people long enough of the time. The best way to do this is to use a "hook" (in this case an "angry white soccer mom") that is sympathetic to the expressive behavioral vector of the pissed off Hillary white women supporters, extend the vector of distraction as long as possible (or as long as a beauty pageant queen uber right wing soccer mom can), and take as many would be Demo voters into distraction land long enough to make a difference in a close election adjusting for compensation and re-tracking. Rove almost hits the target perfectly: support trended away from Obama for about a week or two. Now he needs an "October surprise" to reinforce the deviation influence, and adios muchachas. Rove is definitely an evil genius! Oh, and yes women will lose reproductive rights and a high possibility even voting rights within a generation or so since McCain/Palin will appoint Supreme court justices hostile to Roe v.Wade. This will set the assertion that women are morally and intellectually incapable of making responsible decisions for their own bodies; therefore, should such morally inferior "baby factories" even have the right to vote? Very scary indeed. But quite likely. Hello France.

Gen. Karpinski's analysis is

Gen. Karpinski's analysis is dead on. Sara has never dealt with the "big boys" who really play rough as Janice Karpinski knows all too well. Sara Palin is a small town, small state small time politician who have never been caught in a squeeze play. So Is Sara Palin Angela Merkel ready? Is Sara Palin Darfur ready? Is Sara Palin Wall Street ready? Sara Palin has an ego to talent index of 4 to 1. God save us from more adulation of ignorance.

Not mentioned in this

Not mentioned in this excellent article is how frightening it is to think that Palin could possibly have two appointments to the Supreme Court if McCain-Palin are elected.

Seeing Sarah, one fictional

Seeing Sarah, one fictional character immediately comes to mind. Queen Jadis, The White Witch in C. S. Lewis' The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. The Witch is the self-proclaimed Queen of Narnia. Ruling with an iron fist, she placed a spell on the land so that it is forever winter but never Christmas. She frequently kills those she believes traitors. Her magic wand can turn people and animals to stone. Her cruelty and heartlessness are legendary... I have felt frightened since the first time I saw Governor Palin curl her lip and snarl.

I believe she never actually

I believe she never actually crossed into Iraq - the campaign was forced to admit that a few days ago. And isn't her son in the Army? I'm a woman and I second what you say! While my experience is not in military work, watching colleagues in the State Department cozy up to their bosses was sometimes quite nauseating. McCain's willingness to subject the country to the possibility of this woman as president, in order for him to realize his lust for the presidency, is really quite obscene.

I read an article about

I read an article about Brigadier General Janis L. Karpinski in the Washington Post to find out about her credentials. She sure has a bone to pick with everyone due to her Iraq experience as commander of Abu Ghraib and other prisons, and failing at the job. I consider myself as a moderate conservative trying to figure out if we have anyone as a solid candidate for President. McCain has experience but is outside the Washington power structure, so doesn't have many chits to pull in. Obama has come out of left field, beating a strong lady with lots of power, but also lots of enemies. I can find no evidence that he has really accomplished anything of substance to prove his leadership capability, other than talking a lot and making fantastic promises. My thought is, who is behind this guy? Who is bankrolling him?? Who will pull his strings if elected. Everyone talks about Palin and her Pentacostil background, but as a Methodist I don't see a lot of difference between her and his black Baptist holy roller preacher. As a retired person whose investments are going to hell, how can I afford to support the millions that are on the "entitlement rolls?" (Including my "bipolar" granddaughter and great-grandson.) The problem I see is that soon, there won't be enough people working to pay taxes to support me on Social Security. All the fuss about Palin ignores the fact that the election is still between McCain and Obama. Whose desk do we want the buck to stop on?? Norm from Independence, Missouri, home of inexperienced Harry Truman.

Well, like this is a

Well, like this is a surprise, or I do not agree, of course I do, although I guess I may have missed the sex appeal...my husband may well vote for obama because she is the vp nominee, whereas I'm afraid what he would have done w/ a more qualified nominee, succumbing to the maverick appeal - yea, I've been working on him for years...but it makes me hopeful that many more moderate republicans may well be turned off by palin, not to mention independents - what can possibly be redeeming about this woman? Alas, I have a 4 yo girl- I do not wish her to look to palin as an example, this would not be a way to become a true world leader (or any other profession) I think... I fear it may actually be necessary for at least my sanity to become an ex-pat if mccain/palin succeed - I surely hope all who have written here, and do so after, are involved in the obama campaign...i'd hate palin's world end religious beliefs be proved correct....

Gov. Palin is almost totally

Gov. Palin is almost totally anti-environment. She is determined to exterminate the Alaskan wolf so that the big business "sportsmen" will have more large game to kill for trophies. She just proposed a $150 bounty on the left foreleg of each dead wolf and $400,000 for a program of aerial hunting from low flying airplanes to carry this out. If you go to the Defenders of Wildlife web site you can watch the video they are now showing in selected states such as Ohio and Florida. It is disgusting to watch but it will give you a better picture of this animal hating woman than anything one might say. I have sent the Defenders newsletter to nearly everyone I write to on the Internet. She must be stopped--sent back to Alaska, and this is one way to help do that. (I donated some birthday money too. Might as well put my money where my convictions lie. ) Palin does not think the polar bear is endangered either and is fighting to keep it off the list. http://www.defendersactionfund.org/

What Mc-- has succeeded in

What Mc-- has succeeded in doing is making this a gender battle with women pitted against one another. This is not a campaign championing people capable of guiding our complex government through problems the likes of what the US has ever known in its 200 plus year history. There is no precedent, not even terrorism matches the interwoven problems to assure the survival of the United States. Palin's smarts is with her sexuality; this skill is why she flies around in the Mcplane. The battle of the sexes is not only women against women but men voting with their belief sex fantasies will get them all they need. It is frightening to see and hear what is happening with Mc-- reading one more just ginned out teleprompter guided speech. Does any one believe he really understands his words! Heaven help all of us in this country grossly divided and convulsed with unrealities!

The fictional character of

The fictional character of the White Witch in C.S.Lewis' story The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe first appears in the prequel The Magician's Nephew as Queen Jardis of the dying world of Charn. This is probably the best book in the whole series and the whole story of how Jardis lands in Narnia is timely in the extreme . . . I have been thinking of how closely Ms. Palin resembles Queen Jardis for a few weeks now, it is nice to see I'm not the only one . . . The Magician's Nephew is a short read and a good read-aloud book, I highly recommend it . . .

I posted a song on YouTube

I posted a song on YouTube titled "Sarah Palin is Pretty". Pretty this, pretty that, pretty much all that Ms. Karpinski's article suggests. Would that more people would check out my song, and would check out Sarah Palin.

A woman like Mme Palin could

A woman like Mme Palin could only be launched in America. The Republicans again so cleverly manipulated the US media. A large part of the public is overwhelmed: a new star is born. There is not time enough to bring to many minds in America, how disastrous it will become when you have such an extremely narrowminded vice president, so close to the presidency with a candidate of 72. I am so scared that again the American people will make an absolutely foolish choice. The outside world watches this unfold with such fear, even horror. If McCain is chosen, the Americans and the rest of the world will be stuck with another disaster for another 4 years.

So smart! Will someone

So smart! Will someone please note the similarity between Sarah Palin and the rapacious newscaster in To Die For?

Its perfect really.Gas

Its perfect really.Gas guzzling, reality show watching, nascar loving, bad loan makers and takers, we are a country of morons who elected W twice. And now we are seriously considering electing McCain who looks and sometimes acts like a nut case and Palin. Its even more perfect the the religious ones are going to vote prolife while flushing this country down the toilet. Just like in life protect the unborn and the hell with the rest of mankind unless you need a bailout. No we just might get what we deserve. No wonder the rest of the world thinks were lost. Don't get me wrong I love my country. And while I did not serve in the military I mourn the slow demise of what I remember to be a wonderful experience of a grand U.S.A. The Republicans did this to us. If you want more of the same than vote for M/P and you will see the bottom of the gunny sack soon.

Thank you for saying what

Thank you for saying what I've been thinking. I will be sending this article to my many single woman friends.

I have read enough about

I have read enough about General Janis Karpinski and seen enough video interviews to see that she is a true soldier for which she strived to be when she joined the military. Her 28 years of experience allows her to pass judgement on people which any good general or colonel must be able to do to obtain and hold on to their positions. As a matter of fact, after hearing some of the other 'upper' levels of military leadership I would say she 'out ranks' many that haven't the guts to question the insane and illegal orders given that have placed not just this country but this world in very precarious situations made only for the benefit of the few and for the misery of the many. I could not have stated this correct view of Palin better. Everything General Karpinski said and referred to will in time or already is proven true about Ms. Sarah Palin. It is now for the voters to decide now whether we want another term of continuance like w & dick's last 8 years or maybe something worse IF McPalin becomes president. And it should be known without saying that this article/post should be viewed on the msm but don't count on it. Lastly, I dare to say that if America were to elect a woman as president, look no further than General Janis Karpinski. At least with new administration maybe she will officially get her General's rank back.
