Palin Faces Laundry List of Complications

Washington - GOP vice presidential pick Sarah Palin accepted at least $4,500 in campaign contributions in the same fundraising scheme at the center of a public corruption scandal that led to the indictment of Sen. Ted Stevens.

The contributions, made during Palin's failed 2002 bid to become Alaska's lieutenant governor, were not illegal for her to accept. But they show how Palin, a self-proclaimed reformer who has bucked Stevens and his allies, is nonetheless a product of a political system in Alaska now under the cloud of an ongoing FBI investigation.

It's the latest in a string of revelations that have forced John McCain's campaign to defend his choice and the thoroughness of the background check of Palin, 44, a little-known governor who is new to the national stage. Palin stunned delegates at the GOP convention Monday when she announced through the McCain campaign that her unmarried 17-year-old daughter, Bristol, is five months pregnant.

With the convention still abuzz, the list of potentially embarrassing details grew Tuesday:

  • Palin sought pork-barrel projects for her city and state, contrary to her reformist image.

  • Her husband once belonged to a fringe political group in Alaska with some members supporting secession from the United States.

  • A private attorney has been authorized to spend $95,000 to defend her against accusations of abuse of power.

  • She has acknowledged smoking marijuana in the past.
  •     And this: Bristol Palin's boyfriend, Levi Johnston, plans to join the family of the Republican vice presidential candidate at the GOP convention, the boy's mother said. He left Alaska on Tuesday morning to join the Palin family in St. Paul, Minn.

Defending his choice and the team that helped pick her, McCain said Tuesday that "the vetting process was completely thorough." Campaign advisers at the convention in St. Paul, Minn., said Palin filled out a survey with 70 questions, including: Have you ever paid for sex? Have you been faithful in your marriage? Have you ever used or purchased drugs? Have you ever downloaded pornography?

McCain's aides maintained that Palin was a finalist from the start

But a senior Republican familiar with the search, who requested anonymity when speaking without authorization, said Palin had all but fallen from the radar until late in the summer when McCain - apparently unsatisfied with his working list - asked for more alternatives. Suddenly, she was a finalist.

When she was introduced as McCain's running mate last week, Palin portrayed herself as a political maverick in McCain's mold: "I've stood up to the old politics as usual, to the special interests, to the lobbyists, the big oil companies and the 'good old boy' network,"' she said.

But Alaska's first female governor has at times benefited from Alaska's entrenched political system.

As Palin campaigned unsuccessfully in 2002 to become lieutenant governor, she received contributions from executives at VECO Corp., a powerful Alaska oil field services company. Company founder Bill Allen has admitted the company steers its donations through a "special bonus program" in which executives received money and the company instructed them to donate it to favored politicians.

Allen pleaded guilty to bribery and corruption charges. He admitted the program violated federal tax laws and said it was used to keep his political allies flush with cash.

"If they're working with the oil industry, I'd like to help with their campaigns," Allen testified last year in the corruption trial of a former state lawmaker.

Since Palin's nomination last week, these issues also are raising eyebrows:

  • In her earlier career as mayor of Wasilla, Alaska, Palin hired a lobbyist to help the tiny town secure at least 14 earmarks, worth $27 million between 2000-2003. McCain has touted Palin as a force in his long battle against earmarks.

  • Her husband, Todd, twice registered as a member of the Alaskan Independence Party, a fierce states' rights group that wants to turn all federal lands in Alaska back to the state. Sarah Palin herself never registered as a member of the party, according to state officials, though party members said she attended a 1994 convention with her husband.

  • The state legislature is investigating whether she had Alaska's public safety commissioner fired after he refused to dismiss a state trooper who had divorced Palin's sister. Lawyer Thomas Van Flein said he is representing Palin both personally and in her official capacity as governor. He can bill the state up to $95,000.

  • Palin opposed the U.S. government's listing of a variety of animals as endangered, including the polar bear and the beluga whale, both of which inhabit areas also rich in oil and natural gas.

  • Palin previously acknowledged she smoked marijuana but said in a 2006 interview she no longer used the drug. "I can't claim a Bill Clinton and say that I never inhaled," she said.

  • Palin's management style has come under scrutiny. When taking over as mayor of Wasilla, she asked top officials to submit resignation letters, resulting in several departures, including that of the police chief. The chief claimed it was because he supported her opponent in the mayor's race.

  • Under her leadership this year, Alaska asked for almost $300 per person in requests for pet projects from Stevens, one of McCain's top adversaries. That's more than any other state received, per person, from Congress.
  •     Palin has had her share of run-ins with Stevens, including a dustup earlier this year in which Stevens accused Palin of not being enthusiastic enough about his efforts to bring federal earmark money to Alaska. She has also called on Stevens' son, Ben, to resign as national committeeman for the state party.

She was among the first Alaska Republicans to urge Stevens to answer questions about the FBI investigation.

In the fundraising corruption probe, VECO founder Allen is cooperating with an FBI investigation that has already sent several state political figures to prison. He is expected to be the Justice Department's star witness at Stevens' trial later this month when he testifies about home renovations and other gifts he provided the longtime senator - gifts Stevens is charged with concealing on Senate documents.

Palin received $500, the maximum amount allowed by law, from Allen and VECO vice president Rick Smith. Several other VECO managers, including Pete Leathard, who came up with the idea for the special bonus program, also donated the maximum. Allen's son, a VECO employee, also donated $500. All the checks were donated the same day, except for Leathard's, which was dated two days after the rest.

John Cramer, one of Palin's treasurers for her 2002 campaign, said he doesn't remember any indications that the money came from a special company program.

The donations aren't evidence of corruption, and Palin is not among the lawmakers under investigation in the VECO case. But they undermine arguments that Palin has broken from Alaska's Republican machine, including Stevens.

"If you can take on Ted Stevens and that crowd in Alaska, you can handle the Russians," Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C, told ABC News this week.

But Palin didn't reach the governor's office picking fights with the Senate's longest-serving Republican. She was a director for a nonprofit group Stevens set up to increase the number of Republican women in government. Stevens also campaigned for Palin in 2006 and appeared in a political advertisement for her.

Palin has had her share of run-ins with Stevens, including a dustup earlier this year in which Stevens accused Palin of not being enthusiastic enough about his efforts to bring federal earmark money to Alaska. She has also called on Stevens' son, Ben, to resign as national committeeman for the state party.

She was among the first Alaska Republicans to urge Stevens to answer questions about the FBI investigation. But she did not urge him to resign after his indictment, as she did after a state lawmaker was indicted. She said Stevens "has dedicated his life to the betterment of the state."

    Would you have described a

Would you have described a male politician's list of complications as a "laundry list"? Truthout should not further gender stereotypes.

    What I find even more

What I find even more interesting about Palin’s “experience” is that Alaska is awash in money (oil royalties that have increased with the increase in the price per barrel …GO OPEC!) with more to come as soon as natural gas starts pumping in the future. There is no end in sight of this windfall for Alaskans. There is so much money coming in that each resident (not taxpayer) of Alaska just got a rebate check of $1,200. Maybe that’s why it’s a good idea to have five kids if you live in Alaska. So …why does Alaska need Federal funds, including earmarks (like the Bridge To Nowhere that she was for before she was against it …but still accepted the money for “other projects”)? In July ’08 the estimated US population was 301 million and the estimated population of Alaska is 670,000, which is .0002% of the national population. So the 49 states proportionally paid 99.998% of the $230 million for the infamous Bridge. The Alaska share of the Bridge is $4,600 …in TOTAL! Now, if I could get that return on my meager stocks, I would make Bill Gates look like a pauper! So my question is …how do we get Ted Stevens to be the senator from my home state of Pennsylvania? OBTW: The majority of the town debt of $20 million by Palin (there was zero debt when she took office as mayor) was to build a 5,000 seat stadium …in a town of 7,000-8,000. That even puts Philly to shame. For if we built a stadium in Philly to match the population of Wasilla, our new Quakers stadium would seat 1,3000,000. Now that’s my idea of a stadium! Aaaahhh Sarah …we hardly knew ‘ya!

    It's really simple actually,

It's really simple actually, vote McSame and Palin and watch the finishing touches to the destruction of our constitution, the escalation of war, the further erosion of the goodwill of our 'former' allies and the rest of the worlds citizens, the increase in environmental destruction and extinction of species, more tax breaks for the rich and the downsizing of the middle class....the pathetic list goes on and on which clearly spells the certain doom of the American promise and the further establishment of the fascist state that has been birthed by the ruthless Bush/Cheney cabal. For those of you who are still asleep...wake up!! For those of you who are the victims of the psychological assault by the mainstream media...go for some intensive therapy before the November elections and get on board with the Americans who stand for democracy and freedom and whatever you do please don't vote for McSame!!!

    Face it. She isn't

Face it. She isn't qualified, and they made a panic pandering pick.

    Has any one considered that

Has any one considered that THE reason Palin was picked was precisely so that many of her issues would be bandied about by the 'so-called' liberal press ... that she would collapse and then McNasty and the GOP could point at Obama and blame him for the collapse of Palin? It would certainly help them deal with Obama and his high road ... Cynically yours, RG the LG

    A new revelation each day.

A new revelation each day. Interesting. McCain claims she was fully vetted by his campaign, so he cannot claim to be surprised. Which begs the question where, in his opinion, honesty ends and dishonesty begins. At which point does permitted and accepted behavior give way to unacceptable doing? Is smoking dope now part of Republican culture? Is flip-flopping, for which Kerry was excoriated, now just business as usual? Do we really need a Palin in a leadership role? Do we need a gambler like McCain anywhere near the red button?

At this time when it is

At this time when it is becoming increasingly apparent that the world is rapidly approaching an unprecedented catastrophe,it is shocking that John McCain has picked a running mate someone who does not believe that human activities are dre contributing to global warming.

    Serves McCain rightfor

Serves McCain rightfor flying off the handle with this choice. Right Wing females will end Roe v Wade. They do not seem to understand that an unwanted pregnancy to term is under pressure to do so by the male perpetrator thereby removing the woman's right to choose her own pathway to reproductive success. Palin will put women back into the dark ages as McCain will stack the Supreme Court with Right Wing reactionaries against abortion Not one iota of Hillary in Ms Palin. Despite his kissy relationship with fence sitter Lieberman (a so called Liberal Conservative or a basic Neo-Con) John has so;d out to the Blackwater fringe of the party but then so did Bush.

    Drip, drip, drip, drip.

Drip, drip, drip, drip. When does the levee give way? Also, her activities have nothing whatsoever to do with her gender, but rather to her ambition and misuse of power. Gender-neutral, as we know from a history of such misuse by the usual suspects.

    What kind of woman exposes

What kind of woman exposes her 17-year old daughter to the kind of publicity she has received in order to advance her own political ambition? McCain's choice and the way she was chosen tell us a lot about McCain. He "shoots from the hip" -- exactly like Bush does. If McCain is elected we will get 4 more years of government by "gut instinct" instead of reason.

    Reformer? beware.

    Reformer? beware.

    Yes, I would most certainly

Yes, I would most certainly describe a male politician's list of complications as a laundry list. Anybody remember Agnew? Palin's troubles have to do with her unsuitability for the job, not her gender. Styra Avins

    There are plenty of pro

There are plenty of pro choice Republican women. Presidents cannot reverse Roe V Wade! This same Roe v Wade scare tactic is used each time there is an election for a reason not to elect a pro life individual. I do not like McCain/ Palin's views on sex education to teach only abstinence. Studies have shown that it doesn't work! Again, a President does not make laws and cannot change our sex ed program. More importantly, we don't need a president who wants to sit down face to face with the president of Iran while Iran refuses to negotiate their nuclear advances with the world?. Iran recently thumbed its nose at the world by bragging they have 200 centrifuges enriched. THAT is something that a president has direct influence over - working with other world leaders to stand together to not allow Iran to be nuclear. And Russia is rearing is ugly aggressive side again. Do we want a president who is inexperienced in dealing with the world leaders or one who is so clueless that he thinks Iran's president will adhere to his wishes or that they can come to a "compromise"? Obama obviously does not understand the Sharia, rule of law for Sunnis of Iran! The world has been TRYING to NEGOTIATE and extend carrots to no avail!

    If the Democrats had

If the Democrats had nominated soneone like Palin, can you imagine the flak from Fox News and Rush Limbough?

"If you can take on Ted

"If you can take on Ted Stevens and that crowd in Alaska, you can handle the Russians," Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C, told ABC News this week. That is singularly the stupidest conclusion any thinking person could reach! Uncle Ted blew her off when she told him to come clean about the investigation. His son Ben just went quietly off the radar. Now she and Stevens are cozy again! As for Alaskans having too much money. ..well. ..taxing extractive industries is just good sense for a state's people. Alaska is an 'owner state' and we don't tax the hell out of our citizens to pay for government like California does. Louisiana would be restored by now had they a similar program in place. Taking care of people is a good thing. I agree that sucking up Fed dollars is selfish. Many Alaskans thought we should have given that bridge money to New Orleans. Bear in mind that Alaska took in more Katrina refugees than other state and we sent more relief than anyone. On average, Alaskans send more relief than the other states to various causes when called for - ie. the Tsunami in Indonesia. Our National Guard does a lot of service in these areas and that takes a lot of Fed dollars. Alaskan facts- -many Native Alaskans speak English as a second language. -most of bush Alaskans have no running water or flush toilets. -hunting and gathering is a way of life in bush Alaska where there is little or no cash economy. -Todd Palin is an oil field supervisor/mgr. for BP. Like many Alaskans, his supplementary income comes from running a set net for salmon fishing. His day job is as an oil worker. -Sarah Palin is a photogenic distraction from McCain's shortcomings. But, don't underestimate her or the RNC ! Brooke Heppinstall Alt. Clinton delegate Palmer, AK

Ed, I liked your post, but

Ed, I liked your post, but the math is a bit off: 670,000 is ~0.2% of the US population. Anon, Truthout not only would use the "laundry list" phrase regarding male politicians, they (and many other sites besides) have done so. Fact is, it's a fairly common phrase, at least here in New England where I live. To be fair, then, TO should use it equally - with women as well as men - even though its literal etymology might upset those looking for a fight. To TO, IMO, the real complications with Palin center on her anti-intellectualism. In this day and age, her opposition to the ideas of evolution, a 4.6 billion year old Earth, and global warming - all of which enjoy a consensus of support in the scientific community - should immediately disqualify her from serious consideration for office outside Wasilla. When added to her capacity for denial of the facts on issues like handgun control, women's equality, and gay rights, the measure of her distance from 21st century reality comes close to disqualifying her from the right to live outside an asylum... or at least outside a museum of 19th century society.

    Who had the pregnancy and

Who had the pregnancy and gave birth to the Palin's youngest son seems to be a big question. I am interested in the mono angle explaining the daughter's absence from the scene of 6 to 8 months: if the Palin's daughter had mono, her boyfriend might likely have had it too. It is spread through direct contact with the virally-contaminated saliva of an infected person. Easy enough to check whether Levi had mono concurrent with hers, rendering him absent from the scene for some period of time.

    I agree that gender

I agree that gender stereotypes, as well as discussion of illegitimate pregnamnies, are in poor taste and should be left to the National Enquirer. However, to even consider electing a vice president who o[pposes sex education, promotes the concept that scientific facts should be challanged with mythology and propoganda in beyond the pale. Further, to further punish a victim of rape by forcing her to carry a child is incomprehensable. This is aside from the fact that this woman has no evidence of knowledge of diplomacy, probably not having the least idea of who Meternich was, or when the Treaty of Paris was signed is not even comensurate with the education of a Thirld World assistant council. McCain has had a malignancy and it is not impossible that this lady would have to sit down with the leaders of the E.U., Russia, China and make informed decisions. Has this nation ever faced a more frightening situation?

This is a great gift for the

This is a great gift for the democratic party. We should now start getting out the fact that war hero McCain has been voting against the troops getting any benefits, even voted against them getting protective armor. See "John McCain's dereliction of duty" in Opinion

    A few t hings... 1 - TO did

A few t hings... 1 - TO did NOT use the phrase "laundry list", Associated Press did, and TO merely placed it here, as they do with many of their stories. 2 - It's not gender specific, and I've heard it used to describe a male's list numerous times. Honestly, we're getting just a tad too PC here. 3. Discussing her child's pregnancy, while uncomfortable to many, myself included, is definitely fair game in this election for a few reasons. First, the fact that the Republicans have been doing the same kind of thing for months, attempting to insinuate that Obama is a radical Muslim, among many others. So, here's a anti-choice, anti-education candidate whose own daughter is 17 and has had at least SOME brush with underage and unmarried sex. Yeah, that's pertinent to the discussion of what's best for our children, and also what "family" values" means, and whether or not those values should the ones used to judge Republicans, or just Democrats. If you're going to run on a platform that preaches abstinence-only for education and for the act itself, then, yes, I think it's fair to point out that it sure didn't work for HER family. ~~ Lane Baldwin -- alifewithspirit.blogspot.com

There are plenty of pro Wed,

There are plenty of pro Wed, 09/03/2008 - 17:40 — anonymous said: "Presidents cannot reverse Roe V Wade!" This is ABSOLUTELY UNTRUE. Presidents select the Supreme Court justices. These justices can AND WILL overturn Roe V. Wade if a Republican President is elected. The current court is ONE VOTE AWAY from overturning Roe V. Wade. If women think like you do, reproductive choice (INCLUDING birth control) is doomed. The Bush administration has tried to define life as beginning at conception, they are currently posting an order to allow any health care worker to refuse to advise/assist/prescribe/deliver health care that conflicts w/ their beliefs (read: birth control or abortion). This includes even secretaries! Buy a clue, anonymous. You are going to be using the withdrawal method if you don't wake up.

    Last night the repugnicans

    anyone hear russ today?

anyone hear russ today? Imagine loony, ugly, russ telling U.S.A. what a hotty Sarah is. I wantta puke.

    presidents cannot reverse

presidents cannot reverse Roe v Wade but they can appoint" Supremes" who can. Given the actuary charts there are 1 to 3 on the court that may leave. McCain has stated the type of judges that he will support and they CAN reverse Roe v. Wade as well as a host of other laws....from environmental to food safety laws and citizen protections. [for example number of rat droppings per million in our food stock] More than dwelling on the " infotainment" aspect of this woman let's get more facts on who she really is and where the money has come from (527s) to launch a mayoral of 7000 folks to the governor of Alaska.

    Here's to the women out

Here's to the women out there who have worked so hard to away with the "little woman" image of women, who worked so hard to do away with the idea that women are softer, more vulnerable being who should be immune to the rough and tumble roles of being truly involved in the world. My question is: Who is the sexist? Those who treat Sarah Palin as a person who has chosen to participate in this election process and so can be challenged as all such candidates are; or are the real sexists who sound like the past when society and parents said girls are soft and vulnerable so don't be mean to them, don't yell at them. Take it easy because they are girls. It is the Republicans who are sexist in complaining that the rigorous questioning and investigation of Sarah Palin is somehow sexist. Thanks Mark

    I agree with most everything

I agree with most everything said here about McCain and Palin. Nothing good can come of this match up. I think McCain was just trying to throw a slam at Hillary and it is in poor taste on his part. Not impressed at all with Sarah Palin who abuses her power for her own agendas. I would not get up in front of the world and tell them that my 17 year was pg and unmarried that is very poor taste. She advocates aerial hunting of wolves and bears and that is in poor taste. Neither one of them is for preserving wildlife endangered species. Not to smart McCain.

    I'll bet Karl Rove is

I'll bet Karl Rove is chortling away like crazy these days. The Republicans have successfully come up with another major distraction, a red herring almost as good as the price as gasoline--Sarah Palin. And on top of that, they lucked into hurricane Gustav! McCain's shortcomings are so vastly more numerous and and serious than Palin's. His entire character is shallow, hypocritical and opportunistic. However, he has been somehow been convinced by his cronies, as was George Bush, that he is of presidential timbre.

Hi , I wonder if Palin also

Hi , I wonder if Palin also believes in the Easter Bunny and the good old Stork delivering the babies ??? It would fit well in withe rst she believes in.

All she did in her speech

All she did in her speech last night, was what Republicans do. She talked about things in idiotic quips and one-liners, and she lied. That nonsense about John McCain saying the same thing all the time, is typical Republic nonsense that got us Bush and the search for weapons of mass destruction. If people are insane enough to believe her or McCain because of their prejudices, we will have another administration with something far WORSE than Bush. Vote fear, and you get more of it. Take a look and see how consistent McCain is: http://www.brasschecktv.com/page/325.html What a joke! Then take a look at the drugs McCain takes and their side effects. How he is allowed to run at all is a mystery! The man is ill, has an altered state from drugs, and might well die in office, or at least has a better chance than most due to age and health. Vote for this idiot and his wolf killing from the air inexperienced sidekick, and Bush will look like a walk in the park. Palin is inexperienced, a limited thinker, apparently petty and cruel. If he leaves, she will run this country! I was amazed that there are so many shortsighted people at that convention. Are Americans really, truly this stupid, to be in the throes of an insane administration and vote in another one even worse? Good grief! Let us hope that God will intervene.

    Mickey Spillane, the man

Mickey Spillane, the man responsible for such post war classics as “Vengeance is Mine” and, “I the Jury” once wrote that “the law was invented by wise men to protect the people from wise guys.” Needless to say , when Spillane was breaking all records on the best-seller lists, it seemed simpler to distinguish one group from another. Today, it is becoming ever more difficult to know which group is which. Who are the wise men today? And who are the wise guys? When the people who make the law, break the law, society finds itself in a compromised situation, the type of situation that we are presently experiencing. A government composed of individuals who openly believe themselves to be above the law-by virtue of their religious beliefs, class, or self perceived patriotism- is currently running rough shod over all that is supposed to be sacred to a democratic society. Recent polls point to a substantial decline of confidence in the government and in its officials. In spite of all the spin and false declarations emanating from the Oval office, the American people are at last coming to conclusions that should have been evident years ago. And the question now shouldn’t be how did things go so far, but what are we to do about it? At least in Mickey Spillanes fictional world, you could always count on Mike Hammer and his ever present .45 to bail you out.

    To answer the question posed

To answer the question posed at the end of the articles: Yes, I would use the phrase, "laundry list" in writing the article whether talking about a male or female. That phrase is used all the time. But what the author left out of the list is Palin's attempt to censor one or more books at the library when she was mayor of Wasilla... and this from a person with a degree in journalism who should be defending freedom of the press and public access to information? Apparently she also considered firing the librarian when she met with opposition. This may seem minor compared to other items on the "laundry list." But not so; it reflects something very wrong in her style of management and in her values. Her pattern of abusing her power and removing people whom she views as obstacles reminds me of Cheney. We don't need more of that behavior. Censorship is a huge, red flag to me when I consider the Patriot Act, the calling upon "executive privilege," and the opposite -- claiming not to be part of the executive branch -- as Cheney chooses his tactics when it serves him. Palin loves power. McCain is going to be severely disappointed in his selection if they win the election. I for one will not vote for the ticket because of her.

    This woman scares the living

This woman scares the living daylights out of me.

    Of course this mCcain &

Of course this mCcain & palin are malignant. That is why they will be installed.

    According to the sources

According to the sources listed below: Palin has a record of racist comments, firing those who do not agree with her conservative views, and spend, spend, spend. She kept the money for the bridge, the money, but not the bridge. Her comment about Obama's win over Clinton was" Sambo beat the bitch". I hope that the TV and print media begin to report on the real Palin. Check out these articles to see the real Palin: http://www.laprogressive.com/2008/09/05/alaskans-speak-in-a-frightened-whisper-palin-is-%E2%80%9Cracist-sexist-vindictive-and-mean%E2%80%9D/ http://www.laprogressive.com/2008/09/03/about-sarah-palin/ http://news.bostonherald.com/news/2008/view.bg?articleid=1117009&srvc=2008campaign&position=15

    I've come to the sad

I've come to the sad conclusion that my fellow countrymen have lost their minds. If after 8 horrendous years of Bush/Cheney, the voters would choose to continue these disastrous policies then I guess we're going to get everything we deserve. The final curtain of fascist rule will have descended and enclosed our nation. We will become just another third world nation ruled by the wealthy elite. The middle class will be completely gone. We will exist in poverty, contamination, few jobs, low wages, high prices of food and fuel, disappearing health care, and bankruptcy caused by the war profiteers. What a glorious world it will be, so long as you have a seven figure income to support you and yours. If we protest, we'll be arrested and sent to one of the Halliburton concentration camps. Congratulations Citizens of America, for single handedly helping to destroy our liberties and Constitution. Hurray for you NeoCons for winning the battle but in the end, we are all losers. Bully for Rove. With his help, Hitler finally won!

    Have you ever smoked

Have you ever smoked marijuana? Have you ever downloaded pornography from the internet? Have you ever tried to ban books from a public library? Let's try to be a little more intelligent about what really matters. Sure, marijuana has always been illegal, but many of the people in my generation have at least tried it. (I didn't relly like it) Should a large percentage of my generation be disqualified from seeking public office because we smoked some dope in our teens? (Or snorted half a ton of coccaine before finding Jesus?) Do we really care whether or not our polititians have downloaded porn if it's not child porn? I find it most disturbing that Palin tried to remove books fron the public library, and that she MAY have abused her power as governor to have a police officer fired for personal reasons. These are the thing which matter to me. Maybe I'm just old-fashioned.

    PLEASE - get off the

PLEASE - get off the "laundry list" play on words - don't we have more important issues to deal with here in this crucial election? The term applies to both irregardless of gender (my husband and sons know how to do a wash) and concentrate on the important issues such as GLOBAL WARMING/CLIMATE CHANGE, FISCAL DISASTER AND A COLLAPSING ECONOMY, TAKE ON LOBBIES and THOSE BEHOLDEN TO THEM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Get on the right "wash-cycle" already..............
