What's a Word for the Opposite of Progress? Palin.

Late last week, the first round of post-RNC convention polls showed that John McCain was the beneficiary of a generous 11-point bump in public approval. Most of this shift is attributable to previously undecided voters who've broken in McCain's favor. The reason given by the vast majority as to what precipitated their decision: Palin. Amongst these voters, three subgroups emerged as overwhelmingly shifting to the McCain/Palin ticket over the Obama/Biden one in the past week: women, Catholics, and self-identified moderates. At first glance, these changes in opinion might seem unsurprising given the intensely populist tone that pervaded every convention speech from Monday through Thursday. But look below the surface, and these shifts seem positively surreal. Is it possible that voters have, once again, been duped by the Rovian rhetoric machine? Are we really as gullible as the GOP seems to think? Apparently so.

Let's start with women, most of whom we can reasonably presume are adherents of some form of feminism (which in the most general sense is simply the belief that rights and liberties should not be distributed on the basis of sex.) Many are disaffected Clinton supporters; many others have never - for one reason or another - felt completely at home in the Republican Party. Until now. Given that Palin's positions on "women's issues," from reproductive rights to health care, are 180 degrees from the mainstream feminist base, one can only conclude that for many women, sharing a piece of anatomy is a more powerful source of solidarity than shared beliefs, values or principles. With all due respect to my fellow fairer-sex sisters, those of you for whom the idea of a woman in office is more exciting than good public policy are doing all of us a disservice. Palin, no matter how you slice it, will not represent us when it comes to the issues that feminists from every stripe and for every decade have worked to promote. And to add insult to injury, it could not be more obvious that Sarah Palin is being used by the men in her own party to galvanize disgruntled female voters. Is there anyone out there who could argue with a straight face that Palin would have been picked if she'd been a man? Despite the degrading nature of this strategy, to my astonishment (and apparent naiveté) the polls suggest that it is working. So I feel compelled to ask. Do we really want to legitimize the worst anti-feminist stereotypes about women as a group? People (not just women) who genuinely care about so-called women's issues have simply no alternative but to vote against the McCain/Palin ticket. It really is as simple as that.

The surge of Catholic support for McCain/Palin is less shocking, but equally disturbing. The obvious explanation for this support is Palin's adamant opposition to abortion in all cases except when the life of the mother is at risk. But historically, Catholics, who tend to favor the Democratic Party, have never been single-issue voters, and the larger theme around which they have organized their ideological distribution is human rights. And on that question, there is no debate. Palin fails miserably. This is the woman who said that the war in Iraq was "a task from God." Oh really, Governor? The Catholic faith preaches that it is only priests and saints who have a direct line to the will of God. So which of these is Sarah Palin? Catholicism is the source of liberation theology, whose adherents are some of the most dedicated social justice activists in the world. To grasp the magnitude of the gulf between the rhetoric of the very progressive Catholic human rights stance and the positions of Sarah Palin, I suggest watching the film "Romero" and then following it up with a screening of Palin's convention speech. Then explain to me how Catholic support for Palin is rational. Seriously, someone please do that.

Which brings us to self-identified moderates. Frankly, this one baffles me the most. There is nothing - repeat, nothing - about Sarah Palin that could be described as "moderate." By adding her to the ticket, McCain the Maverick moved himself ten clicks to the right. In fact, it is not an exaggeration to say that Palin's views on most issues tend towards extremist. So what is her appeal to moderates? It has to be the populist draw of her "small-town girl makes good" story. But while that storyline makes for a popular Hollywood blockbuster, it is hardly the basis for a real-life presidency. I understand that it's verboten to bring up McCain's age, but we have to get real. John McCain is 72-years-old and has a history of health problems. There is more than a miniscule chance that if he won the presidency, Sarah Palin would, at some point, be asked to replace him. This is a woman whose main foreign policy credentials (according to her own party) consist of living in a state that borders Russia. Setting aside what this does to McCain's credibility on the question of judgment, it is utter madness to put Palin's folksy appeal above our long-term security and wellbeing.

I've had it with the GOP (Karl Rove, I'm talking to you) bringing down the state of discourse in this country. And I'm tired of it working. Voters are not the complete morons that the GOP takes them for - they're just overworked and uninformed. But the recent polling results once again beg the question: Are we capable of doing better, or are we going to continue to live down to the GOP's cynical expectations of us?

In recent weeks, I have heard talk-radio incessantly repeating the mantra that in 2008, no matter who wins the presidential election, we will have "progressed" as a political culture. That logic is not only simplistic, it's patently untrue. A McCain/Palin victory would be a clear step backward for all voters of conscience, and would likely be the final shameful cleavage in the ever-widening gap between the United States and the global community.

It is the informed and

It is the informed and intelligent among us that must suffer ignorant and emotional decisions made by others. Whether it be the criminal use of a firearm or the ill conceived vote. Yet, eventually the ignorant and emotional do suffer along with us. When there are few jobs, many hungry and homeless, the rich will still be rich and even further along in the exploitation of other peoples of the world, having left the American Middle Class gutted to rot in the sun.

Show me a candidate who

Show me a candidate who demands an end to the war, a repeal of the war powers and other treasonous acts and a revision of presidential pardon policies and then I will listen to their views on the economy, foreign policy and energy. The word for the rest of it is noise.

PT Barnum was right. (You'll

PT Barnum was right. (You'll never go broke underestimating the intelligence of the American people.)

Let me start by saying...I

Let me start by saying...I don’t think that an African-American can be elected President in today’s US..even as bad as Cheney/Bush/Rightwing have been....US is till fundamentally (more covertly obviously) racist..I thought this even before H. Clinton 'rallied’ white working class Dems in Ohio, Penn, W. Va and KY to win those primaries-(what TV pundits called 'cultural differences') racism pure and simple...I grew up with those folks.) Real Effect of Palin choice...now rightwing evangels can easily vote for McCain as they have a Rightwing VP and they can see themselves on the side of ' progressive modernity’ by voting for a women and don’t have to vote for an African-American..and can do so with a 'clear conscience’..(as in 'what me racist or misogynist...how can you say that?...I voted for a women VP!) This 'massaging of the conscience’ is even more true of many 'independent’ voters (especially so-called Reagan Dems...white males and so-called Clinton women).

If 'they' can rig the

If 'they' can rig the election polls then how difficult is it to rig an opinion poll or two? I wouldn't be so pessimistic about the the average US citizen, it is clear that they do not have a voice or representation in mainstream politics. Perhaps people should start conducting their own informal opinion polls and see how they come out. I would guess that McCain is only marginally more popular the GWB.

No doom and gloom! We are

No doom and gloom! We are going to win this one. To the people who think a black cannot win the presidency, that is just the type of thinking like sheep, and we are going to prove you wrong. The tide is changing toward Obama as we speak. I tell you the choice is clear and the times they are achangin.

Great article... I

Great article... I especially like your point about what progress is. I completely agree that we won't necessarily progress in this upcoming election. If we pick McCain, we're picking the backward position in every issue. There is simply no justification for voting for someone who has voted with Bush 90% of the time. The differences are clear. This election should not and will not remain as close as it is today.

Welcome to World War III; if

Welcome to World War III; if MCBUSH is elected.

The only reason this

The only reason this election is close is racism. Plain and simple. two strokes of cynical crap, one Palin, the other Clinton's invigorating the racist tendencies of the white voters in Ohio and Pennsylvania have doomed Obama. Obama is heads and shoulders above McCain and otherworldly in comparison to Palin. None of it will matter as the low information voter, die hard neocons and racism will triumph over intellectual curiosity. Always, at least in this dying Republic.

Wake Up

Wake Up America!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We don't make a difference.

We don't make a difference. We don't have money and power. Didn't the election of 2000 teach you anything? The guy who won didn't take office. Why do you think we are in the situation we are in? If McInsane and O'Palin'g take office, the gates of hell shall open and swallow us whole. Help us Obama Kenobi; You're our only hope.

Sarah Palin is the

Sarah Palin is the quintessential anti-feminist, recruited by the Rove-directed conspirators to fool the unaware into voting for yet another Republican disaster team. She's just bait, folks, and you really shouldn't bite on it. An anti-feminist is to women's progress what the anti-Christ is to theology -- a big hoax intended to lure naive believers into hell. Whatever Obama and Biden may or may not be lacking, they're our only hope now.

One thing that no-one has

One thing that no-one has seemed to pick-up-on is how hypocritical Sarah Palin is regarding her promotion of "abstinence only" birth control. If you check into her past, she eloped with her husband and got married without her family knowing about it until it was a 'fait accompli'. then ALMOST 8 months later she gave birth to her first son (for those who aren't aware, a normal pregnancy is 9 months) As a 44 year-old woman, with a busy career I think it is reasonable to also assume that her latest pregnancy that culminated in the birth of a Downs syndrome baby, was also an unplanned event. Add to that the unplanned pregnancy of her daughter that means that she and the father are being forced into a "shot-gun marriage' and you have a picture of a system of contraception that is obviously ridiculously ineffective that is being promoted as the only thing that we should be using to prevent pregnancies. If we use this family as an example of the efficacy of abstinence-only contraceptive techniques, and imagine how successful it would be in the real world, the result is catastrophic! This, to me, is just the tip of the iceberg. She lives in a fantasy world, when we need someone with real vision.

Yeah Cynthia! I am an

Yeah Cynthia! I am an alumni from SSU and am glad you voiced your well-educated and poignant voice on this ever so important issue. You are right, we need to be better informed and inform those who are less informed that us. It amazing me how shut down most American's are to hearing the truth. Thank you so much for this article.

Though I agreed with Cynthia

Though I agreed with Cynthia Boaz that except for her abortion stance, there is vertually nothing in Sarah Palin's positions or McCain's that should attract Catholics, I would take issue with the author when she says that Catholics think" it is only priests and saints who have a direct line to the will of God." I have been an educated Catholic for 72 years and I have never heard any Catholics make that claim, be they priests, bishops, pope or "saint." God may at times speak directly, but most Catholics believe that through prayer and study they hope to discern what God wills. But who gets a heavenly phone call?

You can't have a democracy

You can't have a democracy without a viable middle class, which has been under siege since Reagan. If the Republican's win this time, we're goners — America will become a plutocratic theocracy quicker than you can say McCain–Palin.

I am 68, female, white,

I am 68, female, white, Catholic and a retired teacher (absolutely middle class). And I've been for Obama from the beginning. Palin only made me more firm in my resolve. Are we really so racist & stupid that we would really vote for any GOP ticket ? Unbelievable and very scary.

Eve Ensler, the American

Eve Ensler, the American playwright and feminist made a very good point today in a diatribe about those who believe Sarah Palin somehow represents solidarity among women or a channel to "change." It's time people realize that Fundamentalists promulgating "God's Plan" in politics are reflecting their belief that global warming, pollution, rise in cancers and war are all part of "God's plan," and therefore should not be changed. They believe this is all supposed to happen and that in the end, they alone will stand in God's favor. Believe what you want behind closed doors, but allowing such a view to dictate policy around war, alternative energy and economics is disastrous--for us as individuals, and for us as a species that should be living in harmony with the rest of the planet--as opposed to controlling it. In this radical world view, everything on earth is here to be plundered by mankind until armageddon. We need to start voting in people who have a true understanding of a global economy and global policy. Like it or not, America is just one miniscule piece part in the greater whole, and if we don't pick politicians that realize we are part of the balance, not in control if it, we will continue to breed hatred and frustration with our policies. That is the true source of the overused term "terrorism," and of the collapse of our financial and energy markets. Let's start at the root of the problems: ignorant politicians that rule according to their radical religious beliefs. Radicalism is no good--no matter what part of the world you live in.

How about a Rigged Poll to

How about a Rigged Poll to prepare us to not challenge yet another Rigged Election (hey, the polls showed us!). As I shared with another Obama Supporter, "Obama doesn't need more votes or better representation of his positions, so much as a Clean Count!'

O.K. time to get creative

O.K. time to get creative and in the face of fellow citizens who keep on voting against their self-interest and drag us all down with them. Write to your local papers, radio and TV. Carry signs, post bumper stickers wherever you go: "Vote for the liars McCain/Palin" or "What is the Difference between Bush and Palin? Lipstick!" or "Vote for the Coming Depression! Vote For McCain/Palin!" "Vote for the "Pro-Lifers McCain/Palin who love Guns and the Death Penanlty"; "Mc Cain/Palin Continuing the Bush Legacy of Lies!". "Vote For Corporate Welfare! Vote for McCain/Pailin!"

Let's be clear, once and for

Let's be clear, once and for all, about abortion. NO ONE is pro-abortion. Those in favor of overturning Roe v Wade seem to think that there are people who happily choose abortion, and base their criticism of it upon that premise. It is only the right to choose whether or not to have an abortion that is in question. I will vote for the candidate that understands that distinction--as apparently, Ms Palin does not. As for McCain, who can tell what he thinks these days?

These comments are very interesting, but the election is still very much up for grabs, for many reasons. Wait and see. Wait and see.

No -- we aren't going to

No -- we aren't going to elect a black president -- the correct term is that we are going to elect a biracial president. And all-in-all, whether Obama is black, white, green or purple, it doesn't matter. Obama is the voice of change -- the McCain bunch talks change but the change seems to be more of the same with a little bling, I spent 3 years recently without health insurance and know how scary that can be. I worked for 25 years in a profession where men made more than women. And it goes on... I want more than this for my grand and great-grandchildren.

" A McCain/Palin victory

" A McCain/Palin victory would be a clear step backward for all voters of conscience, and would likely be the final shameful CLEAVAGE in the ever-widening gap between the United States and the GLOBAL community." Was the last line intentionally the best "feminist" double entendre I've seen in years???? Bush/Cheney and McCain/Pain have and will do more to lift (WARS) and separate the global community than anyone else. Maybe Sarah could make executive decisions at "Victoria's Secret"? As I do not want to return to the Inquisition, or the witch burnings of the Protestant Reformation, I'm not thrilled at her taking up residence in D.C.

I wouldn't vote for Sarah

I wouldn't vote for Sarah Barracuda for dogcatcher. However this does give us an insight into McCains decision making mindset and it is frightening. To pick an unqualified name out of a hat on the spur of the moment to be the second most powerful person in the world is beyond scary. And to do it for purely personal gain! To put this entire country, and maybe other countries of the world, at great risk merely to try to win an election is beyond words. Shame on you John, you have lost all credibility.

I suspect that all of the

I suspect that all of the selkf-styled moderates who have decided to vote Republican because of Palin are people whose once fervent support of Bush is now only luke-warm, hence their self-justification in calling themselves "moderate." No truly "moderate" voter with a functioning brain could possibly support either half of that ticket, let alone the whole.

dtroutma- Nice catch. That

dtroutma- Nice catch. That was not intentional (at least consciously), but I did notice it before sending it off and decided to keep it anyway because it amused me.

The President is

The President is irrelevant. I think it matters not who sleeps in the White House at the end of the day. Both parties are moving America swiftly towards socialism, and the death of the values of America's founding fathers. Read your constitution - that is the law of the land - don't let anyone take away the freedoms that have made America great - and certainly don't place your faith in ANY Presidential wanna-be. They're all equally bad in different ways. Well, maybe some are worse than others, but NONE of them have your best interests in mind. They're puppets on a string and they'll dance for their controllers. The only way to get ahold of one of those strings is to act locally and stop the intrusion into your freedoms on your doorstep. Educate your neighbors, in a friendly way, and memorize the CONSTITUTION and BILL OF RIGHTS. God Bless America - and God help you too!

Beyond Barnum's most damning

Beyond Barnum's most damning characterization, beyond Mencken's most damning characterization, there is homo massmediaticus, a retrograde species capable of the lowest deeds imaginable, and all you have to do to animate it's dangerous animus is feed it tv, lots of tv.

"But look below the surface,

"But look below the surface, and these shifts seem positively surreal." Not "surreal," but unreal. The polls are total bullshit - there is no way half the country thinks more GOP hell is a good idea. No f**king way, okay? The polls are being manipulated in order to make the race seem close to cover the planned election theft in Nov. Don't believe the hype, people...

While I remain hopeful, it

While I remain hopeful, it is with the understanding that there are still too much racism in this country. My mother-in-law has been looking for a reason to not vote for Obama and now she has one -- to quote her, "that Sarah Palin can sure give a speech." This is the same woman who just cannot go to a woman doctor because of her prejudice, but once Sarah made the ticket she stopped trying to find reasons to NOT vote for Obama despite being unhappy with the Bush years. She has quoted his lack of experience and some other Republican talking points in the past, but now she has an excuse and I'm sure it will make her feel oh, so progressive voting for a woman. My husband and I are still working on her, but in the privacy of the voting booth she will probably do what she does best . . . vote against her own interests. Sad, but true. The penalty good people pay for not being involved in politics is to be governed by people worse than themselves. ~Plato

The Gov. of Alaska has

The Gov. of Alaska has nothing in common with 80% of all the female Hillary backers. To the 20% of Hillary backers, women who espouse feminist rights and believe that its time for a woman to be in power, no matter which woman - stop talking out of both sides of your mouths. You are either for equality and your right to choose how you want your reproductive organs managed, or you've been lying all this time. Turn off Dr. Phil, get off the couch and read about Gov. Palin. She's the farthest thing from a feminist you could imagine. A HEARTBEAT AWAY. And an old heart at that.

Everyone relax and read

Everyone relax and read this: http://www.chopra.com/wordsfromdeepak We can do it.

Yes, Indeed. Old P.T. Barnum

Yes, Indeed. Old P.T. Barnum knew a circus and all about how to run one."There's a sucker born every minute," he said, giving historical inspiration to today's GOP. Unfortunately, most of the suckers vote. . . and too many of them are concerned with the fortunes of a couple of NASCAR drivers than with the shenanigans of their representatives in government. Bamboozled by the superficiality of television, they confuse what passes as the daily "news" with soap operas, "reality" shows and old John Wayne movies. Even with true reality biting them in the ass, they are titillated by the superficial glitz and outright lies of the likes of John McCain, Karl Rove, George Bush and Sarah Palin--and their attention span has long since dissipated by the time anyone presents the actual truth as rebuttal. Reagan was a bit mixed up in his thinking, but his remarks always resonated well. "The problem is not government," he said; "government is the problem." Sorry, Ron. The problem is those who vote in a government, endure its corruption and learn nothing in the process. As the philosopher Pogo, long a student of human nature, once observed, "We have met the enemy and he is us."

Who are these people being

Who are these people being polled? I don't know anyone who has been polled. If they are doing it by phone, they are not counting much of the youth voters who rely on cell phones. Many are supporting Obama. I agree with Cynthia and I am terribly frustrated by the selection of Sarah Palin. I am a white 55 yr old mother of three daughters and live and grew up in a red state.

Regarding who is being

Regarding who is being polled and whether the polls are legitimate...those things don't matter as much as the fact that they are being used by McCain/Palin-- and rather successfully. The campaign has been able to create the perception that the polls are representative and legitimate, especially amongst a contingency of the MSM- who is then reporting on them that way. I thought about taking the angle that we can't trust the polls, but at the end of the day it was more compelling to me to demonstrate the utter irrationality of voting for the McCain/Palin ticket. Period.

Sarah Palin is to women what

Sarah Palin is to women what Clarence Thomas is to ......?????

"One thing that no-one has

"One thing that no-one has seemed to pick-up-on is how hypocritical Sarah Palin is regarding her promotion of "abstinence only" birth control. " What promotion? Do you have evidence of this? See this recent Los Angeles Times article, Palin appears to disagree with McCain on sex education (http://www.latimes.com/news/education/la-na-sexed6-2008sep06,0,1923582.story) "Palin spokeswoman Maria Comella said the governor stands by her 2006 statement, supporting sex education that covers both abstinence and contraception." Palin is extremist, but this persistent rumor is a wild exaggeration. Even Obama supports that kind of sex education. Aletha www.freesoil.org

Something else that scares

Something else that scares me is that her husband is CC'd on her email. It makes me wonder just how much of the Govenor's seat is hers. Although not wanting to be ruled by either of them, the husband makes me shudder everytime I look at him. I can see every man who ever tried to rule me when I look at him, and it ain't a pretty sight. It is so very hard for me to believe that the American people are that stupid, to again put someone who would be so bad for us in the seat of power. Are we really that stupid? Or is it more that people are just uninformed?

I don't believe the hype of

I don't believe the hype of the polls. Far more Dems voted in the primaries then Reps. As fas as us moving closer to socialism, that would be a good thing the govt. is doing, even if they are not consciouses of it. I'm a big fan of the dream John Lennon asked us all to Imagine. As for as the bs of asking god to bless America I am sick to death of. I want America to bless the world, for we were blest long ago. To keep asking for that, must come from a blinded mind. But then I'm from Lennon's nytopia which raises a white flag. Just to add some humor to a heavy topic. They both lost my vote of confidence a long long time ago. But that is only slightly a reason for this funny "they lost my vote" song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yU5ks3yeG-Q

Stop these make believe

Stop these make believe pollings. The media can't be trusted anymore. Reporters have no longer minds of their own. These are scary tactics of losers manipulating news to confuse people. Yes, who are they polling? real political knowledgeable people or the contrary of these? I am embarrassed and sad that this country is placed on a position below than the third world country where cheating, lies and insults dominate the electionprocess. Please let's gain the lost reputation of a great country and be a sample for smaller ones.

"Voters are not the complete

"Voters are not the complete morons that the GOP takes them for." Yes, the majority of them are. It's obvious and the Republicans know it and aren't embarassed about exploiting it. That's why they will win. Wake up America.

Refreshing and smart. Can we

Refreshing and smart. Can we run you for VP instead?

To: WBrownlee, who wrote:

To: WBrownlee, who wrote: "I can see every man who ever tried to rule me when I look at him..." He looks like a pretty nice guy to me, and a less confrontational and more affable person than his wife. Could it be that you find him threatening simply because he is a non-metro white male?

The radical right is

The radical right is diametrically opposed to any course of conduct that actually is in accord with the teachings of Jesus. They use "god" the same way the Aztecs used religion to control the local populace while they slaughtered innocents and dominated their neighbors. Bush, Palin, Cheney, Scalia, these are people who go to church so that their evil deeds can be cloaked in religion and to maintain the falsehood that they act in the name of God or Jesus Christ when in fact everything they do goes contrary to any code of moral conduct.

Most women don't support

Most women don't support Palin's politics. The majority of women want equal pay, paid sick leave to care for their kids, a maternity leave policy that doesn't put the U.S. years behind every other industrialized nation, and a nationwide health care plan that covers everyone. The more people learn about her, the more obvious it is that she is bad for American women: http://www.canow.org/canoworg/2008/09/why-sarah-palin.html and plenty of women recognize that: http://www.canow.org/canoworg/2008/09/we-arent-the-on.html

This person is 'selected'

This person is 'selected' for VP in a completely non-democratic process. Who voted for Palin in the primaries? All this nonsense would have sorted itself out then. Really, the person getting 2nd most delegate votes should have right of first refusal for the VP position. This selection process is even more unfortunate than the design of the US Senate, probably the most non-democratic legislative body in the world. We don't have democracy, we have marketing, along with voter unregistration drives and rigged election counts.

We are NOT going to win! I

We are NOT going to win! I hate to break the bad news but this "election" is over, it's been bought and paid for. Are they going to steal the 2008 election? No, they’ve already stolen it! Read the articles by Greg Palast and Bob Fitrakis & Harvey Wasserman (http://www.truthout.org/article/fitrakis-and-wasserman-will-gop-election-theft-machine-do-it-again-2008) McCain will "win" and Palin is the token to explain it away along with more phony polls that pave the way to "Grand Theft Election 2008" (Oh, it was the value voters, alright?). The only chance for Obama is to effect a really massive voter-turnout along with verified exit-polls as a reliable measure of the true vote and a means to challenge any vote-tinkering. But seeing the passive Democrats of today this won't be happening ...

Hi, Cynthia. B.Mus., SSU,

Hi, Cynthia. B.Mus., SSU, '79 here. I adore your writing. Especially about real women. Thanks for a lyrical, eloquent expression of a reasoned woman writing about our real issues. Reasoned choice of leaders.

Please, please, please do

Please, please, please do not despair. She will never have the type of power that she is now in control of. McCain has no intention of dying in office, listening to her or getting her involved in his decision making process. This is a man who has choice words for women who are strong and powerful including one that I cannot use but begins with a "c" and ends with a "t". Plus, do you see the blond woman that he calls wife. Think Nancy Reagan type of power. She is richer and more powerful. Palin was chosen for sacrificial purposes. Think virgins as in getting the gods to be happy with this offering. The gods are the voters who obviously hates ugly and loves beauty.

I wish the author--and all

I wish the author--and all the rest of my friends on the left--would not make assertions about Catholicism without checking them with a reasonably well-informed Catholic or student of the long, complex Catholic tradition. I say this because of this assertion: "The Catholic faith preaches that it is only priests and saints who have a direct line to the will of God." The ignorance on display here is so painful that I can't continue. Except, perhaps, to reiterate: please try to get it straight. Please. Please.

Hello tnt- What makes you

Hello tnt- What makes you think I didn't "check my assertations" first? I regret that you take issue with my characterization. I am quite familiar with Catholicism both personally and professionally. I attended a Catholic university as an undergraduate and spent four years teaching at one as well.I did not intend the phrase "direct line to God" to be taken literally, as you seem to have done. But since you aren't clear, I'm curious about what it is that you take issue with specifically?

I'm sorry I'm too busy for

I'm sorry I'm too busy for all this..I have a few Hollywood movies to catch up on..I'm sure they're very important to the sun getting up every morning..the rain falling at regular intervals & the production of "Sarah Lee" cheese cake..oh by the way, they work for you!..& if they don't..stop paying them..it's your country & it's our world!

If McCain were elected and

If McCain were elected and then died, and Palin became pregnant. Would she do the right thing and take a leave of absence for her childbirth and early years of the newborn child? If so,who then would be in charge? If not, the poor child would be without a nurturing mother. Abstinence? hasn't been her pattern so far. I think I'll play it safe and vote for Obama!

Watch what is really going

Watch what is really going on with Palin. Her religion teaches that women should be subservient to men and she is. Her husband, Todd, is always there. He makes the decisions -- even participating in cutting the Alaska budget. Remember that Todd was a member of the Alaska Independence Party, the party that believes Alaska should withdraw from the US.

Although unintended

Although unintended consequences happen, surely by the age of 40 Palin and hubby knew of the relationship between sex and children, yet went ahead anyhow. This sort of recklessness should worry everyone. And that she can feel good about bringing her Downs child to term may have more to do with the fact that the constant care and medical costs are begin born by the Alaskan taxpayers. Put the Palins as middle class taxpayers, and a Downs child is a choice between needed care and bankruptcy.

Personally, I think the

Personally, I think the polls are pure crap. Sure, if you poll a bunch of morons and right wing religious nuts, The Mcain/Palin ticket may seem to be doing well. No pollster has called my house, and I doubt anyone has called yours Cynthia. This is a great piece, but I hardly think that the polls are representative of the American populace. They are skewing them so when they steal the elections again, we sheeple will be unsurprised, and lulled into believing that America actually voted for these guys.

I came across this article

I came across this article because I am just trying to read everything that I can to make my decision in this election. I kind of feel this article is incomplete - it brings up many points, but they need to be backed up for this article to mean anything to me. I'm just playing devils advocate, so take it easy - aren't you worried about Obama too? I sure am. I am worried about both candidates and their running mates. That's why I continue to read more. What's on TV doesn't seem to help much...it just depends on what station you watch.

Actually, 7:01, my house has

Actually, 7:01, my house has been called by pollsters several times since the conventions. That being said, I'm not sure I accept the veracity of the polls either, but perception is everything and many, many people do believe-- and repeat-- these kinds of results, which means they need to be addressed.

Palin may not be dumber than

Palin may not be dumber than a fence post, but she certainly is a "post turtle." When you see a turtle on top of a fence post you immediately know several things: it does not belong there; it did not get up there on its own; and it has no idea of what to do now that it is up thre. This leads to the obvious question: What kind of dumb SOB put that turtle up there to start with. Sarah Palin: A post turtle. End of story .

tnt is right. Catholicism

tnt is right. Catholicism teaches that all the faithful can perceive the will of God. The "direct line" metaphor was ill-timed and subtracted from the impact of your otherwise valid point.

Nice, nice, great piece and what reactions! This crowd sure as hell ain't "brain-dead". And from where a lot of us sit this election like it or not DOES concern the major countries (hell the whole world!) for nothing less than possibly, a step by step falling towards a final global war is at stake in november. Might sound a bit theatrical to U.S. readers but outside, upclose and personal-like with 'inter countries' relations an everyday reality - the prospect of a McCain-Paulin steal is terrifying! God (or the toothfairy) help us all!

Mr. Deacon, That's a tad

Mr. Deacon, That's a tad nitpicky. As I understand it, it is priests- via bishops- via the direct line of succession from the apostles- who are the only Catholics permitted to speak for God (via their sacramental authority.) Do you honestly think Catholics accept that Sarah Palin has legitimate authority to speak on behalf of God's will? Just because all Catholics are taught to seek and live the will of God does not mean that all people's interpretations of that will is or should be given equal value, correct?

Cynthia, you're changing the

Cynthia, you're changing the subject on me. I said that all the faithful can "perceive" the will of God. I didn't say anything about who is "permitted to speak for God," and up to now I didn't think you had either. Yes, the bishops having teaching authority passed down from the apostles. That is more about faith, morals and tradition than it is about knowing what God's will is. I don't think any Catholics accept the proposition that Sarah Palin has authority to speak for God, and I hope nobody does. Remember, I said you were right about Palin in the first place; the only nit I picked was one metaphor you could have left out of the piece.
