Palin: Wrong Woman, Wrong Message

Sarah Palin shares nothing but a chromosome with Hillary Clinton. She is Phyllis Schlafly, only younger.

Here's the good news: Women have become so politically powerful that even the anti-feminist right wing - the folks with a headlock on the Republican Party - are trying to appease the gender gap with a first-ever female vice president. We owe this to women - and to many men too - who have picketed, gone on hunger strikes or confronted violence at the polls so women can vote. We owe it to Shirley Chisholm, who first took the "white-male-only" sign off the White House, and to Hillary Rodham Clinton, who hung in there through ridicule and misogyny to win 18 million votes.

But here is even better news: It won't work. This isn't the first time a boss has picked an unqualified woman just because she agrees with him and opposes everything most other women want and need. Feminism has never been about getting a job for one woman. It's about making life more fair for women everywhere. It's not about a piece of the existing pie; there are too many of us for that. It's about baking a new pie.

Selecting Sarah Palin, who was touted all summer by Rush Limbaugh, is no way to attract most women, including die-hard Clinton supporters. Palin shares nothing but a chromosome with Clinton. Her down-home, divisive and deceptive speech did nothing to cosmeticize a Republican convention that has more than twice as many male delegates as female, a presidential candidate who is owned and operated by the right wing and a platform that opposes pretty much everything Clinton's candidacy stood for - and that Barack Obama's still does. To vote in protest for McCain/Palin would be like saying, "Somebody stole my shoes, so I'll amputate my legs."

This is not to beat up on Palin. I defend her right to be wrong, even on issues that matter most to me. I regret that people say she can't do the job because she has children in need of care, especially if they wouldn't say the same about a father. I get no pleasure from imagining her in the spotlight on national and foreign policy issues about which she has zero background, with one month to learn to compete with Sen. Joe Biden's 37 years' experience.

Palin has been honest about what she doesn't know. When asked last month about the vice presidency, she said, "I still can't answer that question until someone answers for me: What is it exactly that the VP does every day?" When asked about Iraq, she said, "I haven't really focused much on the war in Iraq."

She was elected governor largely because the incumbent was unpopular, and she's won over Alaskans mostly by using unprecedented oil wealth to give a $1,200 rebate to every resident. Now she is being praised by McCain's campaign as a tax cutter, despite the fact that Alaska has no state income or sales tax. Perhaps McCain has opposed affirmative action for so long that he doesn't know it's about inviting more people to meet standards, not lowering them. Or perhaps McCain is following the Bush administration habit, as in the Justice Department, of putting a job candidate's views on "God, guns and gays" ahead of competence. The difference is that McCain is filling a job one 72-year-old heartbeat away from the presidency.

So let's be clear: The culprit is John McCain. He may have chosen Palin out of change-envy, or a belief that women can't tell the difference between form and content, but the main motive was to please right-wing ideologues; the same ones who nixed anyone who is now or ever has been a supporter of reproductive freedom. If that were not the case, McCain could have chosen a woman who knows what a vice president does and who has thought about Iraq; someone like Texas Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison or Sen. Olympia Snowe of Maine. McCain could have taken a baby step away from right-wing patriarchs who determine his actions, right down to opposing the Violence Against Women Act.

Palin's value to those patriarchs is clear: She opposes just about every issue that women support by a majority or plurality. She believes that creationism should be taught in public schools but disbelieves global warming; she opposes gun control but supports government control of women's wombs; she opposes stem cell research but approves "abstinence-only" programs, which increase unwanted births, sexually transmitted diseases and abortions; she tried to use taxpayers' millions for a state program to shoot wolves from the air but didn't spend enough money to fix a state school system with the lowest high-school graduation rate in the nation; she runs with a candidate who opposes the Fair Pay Act but supports $500 million in subsidies for a natural gas pipeline across Alaska; she supports drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Reserve, though even McCain has opted for the lesser evil of offshore drilling. She is Phyllis Schlafly, only younger.

I don't doubt her sincerity. As a lifetime member of the National Rifle Assn., she doesn't just support killing animals from helicopters, she does it herself. She doesn't just talk about increasing the use of fossil fuels but puts a coal-burning power plant in her own small town. She doesn't just echo McCain's pledge to criminalize abortion by overturning Roe vs. Wade, she says that if one of her daughters were impregnated by rape or incest, she should bear the child. She not only opposes reproductive freedom as a human right but implies that it dictates abortion, without saying that it also protects the right to have a child.

So far, the major new McCain supporter that Palin has attracted is James Dobson of Focus on the Family. Of course, for Dobson, "women are merely waiting for their husbands to assume leadership," so he may be voting for Palin's husband.

Being a hope-a-holic, however, I can see two long-term bipartisan gains from this contest.

Republicans may learn they can't appeal to right-wing patriarchs and most women at the same time. A loss in November could cause the centrist majority of Republicans to take back their party, which was the first to support the Equal Rights Amendment and should be the last to want to invite government into the wombs of women.

And American women, who suffer more because of having two full-time jobs than from any other single injustice, finally have support on a national stage from male leaders who know that women can't be equal outside the home until men are equal in it. Barack Obama and Joe Biden are campaigning on their belief that men should be, can be and want to be at home for their children.

    This could be huge.

Thank you, Ms. Steinem. That

Thank you, Ms. Steinem. That was gloriously thoughtful and enlightened. When I saw you had written an article addressing the Palin phenomenon, I could not wait to read it. As usual, you opened my eyes to look beyond the surface and opened my mind to wrap around to the other side of what might be going on. Thank you again for speaking out.

Sound Familiar? Bush and

Sound Familiar? Bush and McCain must have thought they died and went to heaven. It must be some kind of religious breed- the corrupt regilious. I always thought this kind of regilious person, who is very aggressive, uses religion as a defense against their own agression. Those regilious haters. It reminded me of the documentary I saw about Iraq where Bush got rid of all the competent people in charge and replaced them with incompetent ones. It's the same mind set and It doesn't surprise me tjat she had oil contacts.

I Thank you too, now I have

I Thank you too, now I have to sit on the sidelines in another country and keep my fingers crossed that the Democrats win! I see all the work you and yours have done over the years, making life livable for the modern woman. My Country is also now in the election mode and I am hoping the Green Party will be given a chance to show their stuff. The Liberals and Progressive Conservatives have done everything they can to "service" the Big Boys Companies, sending work to the Third World companies. This taking of jobs and sourcing them out, leaving the home Country educated graduates with only fast food joints to find work in, is not what our education tax dollars were meant for. Shameful all the way around.

Aside from what it says

Aside from what it says about John McCain's 'judgement', the selection of Sarah Palin as vice-presidential running-mate gives a whole new meaning to the term 'Family Values'. As the mother of 5, one a 'special needs' infant , maybe Sarah can be equipped with a little portable breast-pump she can use on the campaign trail, while someone else tends to her maternal responsibilities, or when her feeding-modules begin to leak. Very shortly, we understand, Trig's nutritional requirements can be directly fulfilled by sister Bristol, while mommie is out dowsing for votes, but Sarah will still need the pump - - at least until she quits lactating.

"McCain could have taken a

"McCain could have taken a baby step away from right-wing patriarchs who determine his actions, right down to opposing the Violence Against Women Act." In checking the Senate votes on the 1994 Act, the 2000 and 2005 reauthorization of the Act, I am not seeing where he opposed it. Am I missing something? Is he opposing the International Violence Against Women Act of 2007? Otherwise--great post. As I canvas for Women for Obama in Indiana, I need accurate information on his votes as I speak to those who really care about this issue.

Thank you. I have to say

Thank you. I have to say that I thought the DNC and the Obama camp treated Ms. Clinton very poorly, and Chairman Dean should be ashamed of his treatment of Michigan and Florida, as well. That aside, I found your article very convincing, quiet, thoughtful, and logical. You have just given a fence-sitter with Third Party tendencies a firm shove towards the Obama camp. I am a hard-core, very-old-school liberal, and the Democrats may still come out with enough Republicanisms to send me screaming to the Greens, or Nader, but for now, I will consider voting Democratic. All you rude, insulting, overbearing "progressives" out there should pay attention. This is how it's done.

Thanks for setting the

Thanks for setting the record straight, Ms. Steinem. Now can you buy some Tv air time and read this to the millions out there who don't go to Truthout or read the LA Times? Perhaps Moveon or Soros can buy the airtime for you, or all the magazines like Ms. All you need is a one and a half minute advertisement.

You can't lick you family -

You can't lick you family - but you CAN pick your friends, and your wives. John McCain has shown, in both instances, his faulty and impulsive picking habits. Marry, commit to family values, and then pick something better, dumping the damaged one. Commit to the American people, and then see something better, dumping the damaged country your ill-advised support of a corrupt regime has created in favor of your own opportunistic wish to be president. Call that loyalty, patiotism, maverick=ness, whatever. It's no pattern we want in a leader.

Love the sentiments Gloria,

Love the sentiments Gloria, but you "misunderestimate" the stupidity of most Americans and the manner in which the media echo the metaphor of Palin. George Lakehoff wrote an analysis of her selection in the Daily Kos. Content, ideas, experience, knowledge and more are not the issue of concern. Read it. "Don't wanna be an American Idiot, One nation controlled by the media"

Ms. Steinem: I don't think

Ms. Steinem: I don't think Gov. Palin's gender is the main issue among those Republican voters in the South, Mid-West and South West. That is only a subtext and an excuse to seem progressive. It is the fact that supporters of the Republican Party fear Senator Obama, and for two reasons: he's black (and that is the key issue), and those voters have accepted the Republican assertion that McCain will do more to "protect" them from evildoers. Why else spend so much of their convention time dissing Obama with Roveian lies and innuendo (which tactics McCain has said he'd eschew) and incessantly touting McCain's P.O.W. years as having given him some superhuman powers to lead? These folks don't seem to have an ability to reason, else why would they continue to support a party which has done so much damage to this country in the last eight years? McCain/Palin trotted out the same tired old hobgoblins of their party: the liberal elite, the tax and spend Democrats, the soft on (terrorism, communism, socialism, etc.) Democrats, the tax-raising Democrats, yada yada yada. The idea that McCain/Palin is a maverick running against the special interests/big government/corrupt politicians/takers of federal dollars, and so on, which doesn't at all correspond to the actual antithetical behavior of this conjoined, cobbled together entity, behavior which has been shut out of their supporter's consciousness with the childlike chant of U.S.A.! U.S.A.! U.S.A.! No, Obama could lose this election NOT because of what McCain/Palin does, but because of what HE is not. I think the "undeclareds," the "independents," and the "fence-sitters" are really Republicans in denial. It will be they who will decide the fate of this battered nation, and drive this once-proud country into permanent decline. Four more years indeed.

McCain's choice of Palin,

McCain's choice of Palin, who disagrees with most other women with respect to significant issues affecting women, is a cynical and farcical maneuver that in the end won't get him to first base. Palin's skeletons are everywhere and as opposing forces drag them out and present them one by one, her so-called star status will gradually begin to fade. Additionally, by that time, McCain will be stuck with her and won't have enough time to force her off the ticket and to add a different VP choice. I therefore see Palin as a carefully wrapped gift (opportunity) to the Obama/Biden ticket, a gift that should be unwrapped properly and gradually and meticulously consumed or used.

Can you imagine how

Can you imagine how different the articles & rhetoric would be if the 17 year old pregnant girl was the daughter of Obama instead of Palin? Think about it! It is insulting that McSame thinks women would vote for Palin just because she has a vagina. To try & compare Palin with Hillary is laughable! But, there are a lot of busy Moms out there who just don't have time to keep up with the election news, so we must take it upon ourselves to educate them. This is NOT the woman we want to make VP history. Let them know how much is at stake if McSame & Palin get elected and how much their lives & their daughters lives can change. Great article, Ms. Steinem.

Perfectly written. Thank you

Perfectly written. Thank you for such a critical analysis of the issue of Palin. As a resident of Alaska, I can speak on behalf of the other half of Alaskans, many of us were shocked to wake up little over a week ago to news of Palin's pick. We felt like we had awoken in an alternate universe. Kuddos to Steinem for bringing up the rebate, in addition to the annual PFD check all Alaskans receive (based on taxes to oil companies) Palin this year introduced a $1200 rebate check (so a family of 4 will get 4 checks) to help subsidize the cost of utilities. Many Alaskans question if these checks would have been better spent reducing our dependence on expensive utilities by funding renewable energy. Many Alaskans also question if these checks will really be spent on anything more then flat-screen TVs at Costco. Already the TV ads in AK have started for high-end purchases. This handout goes against the grain of the supposed boot-straps belief of Republicans. What also offends is that those in the lower 48 are being strained by this economy as well, and they have not rec'd such rebates. Palin's transparent vote buy with this $1200 per Alaskan is weak and irresponsible. Thank you to Ms. Steinem for bringing up an Alaskan issue that has been ignored: Palin's irresponsible fiscal policy.

Palin's choice was perfect.

Palin's choice was perfect. I had actually considered voting for McCain until I saw how he acts in present day crisis situations. I would say "Thank God" I saw the light soon enough, but then Ms. Palin would think I was thanking the Founding Fathers.

PLEASE forward this article

PLEASE forward this article to Huffington Post, and the Obama campaign managers, and get it on You Tube! We CAN'T allow our country to be lost to McCain's pitiful judgement and useless Palin! If McCain really wanted to boost his chances with a serious VP candidate, he should have picked Condie Rice! ...Black, female, AND experienced! But instead he selected a "Beauty Queen, moose-burger eating, average soccer-mom" to be a heartbeat away from ruling this great nation at at dire time in history. And he has the nerve to use the slogan, "COUNTRY FIRST!" We, the people, MUST take our country back! We the people MUST get this message and Ms. Steinem's article circulated via any media outlet available! I will do my part! Thank you Ms. Steinem for your excellent and timely article.

The usual left wing

The usual left wing hyperbole from a pro-death point of view. Thank God she is pro-life, pro-family, bright, articulate, honest, and probably the most knowledgeable person on either ticket about energy and the environment. She is truly her own person and not a feckless follower of regurgitated feminism. Feminists seem to have forgotten that the very first feminists were profoundly pro-life. Palin is the proud mother of 5 children and had the courage and faith to carry a Down's Syndrome child. That child will bless their family as specical needs children regularly do. Every person walking on this earth had a prolife mother except for the few who actually survived an attempted abortion. You are here because your mother chose life.

Why not beat up on her? She

Why not beat up on her? She beat up on Obama, and her boss continues to lie about him. She is nothing but a dingbat, and I am so tired of these dummy women acting so high and mighty. She is not smart enough to be my president! I am sick and tired of being embarrassed of my presidents and of my country!!! Bush has brought us to a new low, and I for one, will no longer tolerate it!!! I am not going to play "nice," just because Obama says we have to. He can be nice, but not me. I am sick and tired of the Spineless Democrats in Congress, and I will not be quiet anymore!!! Sarah Palin is a DINGBAT, AND I WILL SHOUT IT TO THE WORLD!!! DINGBAT, DINGBAT, DOPEY DINGBAT!!!

All rights to the unborn and

All rights to the unborn and no rights to the born!

Thank God that some women

Thank God that some women are seeing Sarah Palin for what I saw during the Republican convention. As a Black person, we had to learn that just being Black doesn't mean that you will fight for the rights of Black people. Amen to Gloria Steinem.

Great article. Great

Great article. Great woman. I remember Schlafly and how the big boys in Washington, D. C. (and many states) let her be a mouthpiece against the Equal Rights Amendment. Then when the ERA was defeated, Schlafly was consigned to oblivion. Women like Sarah Palin who would sell out the rights of their fellow women should be regarded with extreme suspicion.

Wonderful, Gloria, I feel as

Wonderful, Gloria, I feel as if I'm watching a mock election on the Titanic just moments after it struck the iceberg, before the news has sunk in. It's all in good, clean fun - two candidates to replace the captain, along with two first officers, one of them a woman. Fifteen minutes later the woman who has run for first officer and won must decide if she will abandon ship, taking advantage of the 'women and children first' rule, or stay on board until everyone is safe, which could mean she'll drown. Guess what she's gonna do if her name is Sarah Palin. Well, okay, maybe her heroic running mate will talk some sense into her as the water rises. Pete Edler, Stockholm

Palin is not intended to be

Palin is not intended to be a candidate for people who know anything. She is "one of us" for the vast mass of anti-intellectual know nothings who vote on the basis of a sound bite or two. Picking her was a brilliant play. One can only hope she will acquire fewer fans than the Piglicans are counting on.

Unfortunately, many people

Unfortunately, many people will not be astute enough to realize or investigate Palin's views and values. Barak's message is still, essentially, Hilary's message. Sarah Palin's platform couldn't be much further from what the Democrats espouse. Surely people won't jump ship just to have a woman in office. I wish this article could be on everyone's "mandatory reading list!"

Thank you for reaching so

Thank you for reaching so many people with such a strong and sensible message. The Rep. are trying their same old mean spirited tactics to use distraction from the real issues. The real issues should not be guns, abortion, war, drilling for oil- they should be what the Dem. are talking about- education, environment, ending the war, international affairs, health care, and the economy- why can't people see these issues? This is not a sex appeal contest or who is the cutest or about a woman - it's about our children's future! This is a scary time and Sarah Palin is a dangerous person not qualified to serve as VP-9of the past 44 president's have been taken over by the VP- she is corrupt, narrow minded and like a pit bull , as she so proudly states. NO TO MCCAIN-PALIN!!!!!!!!

In response to the person

In response to the person who asked about McCain voting against the Violence Against Women Act, here is a link: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=132x6866811

'Tis truly heartening to

'Tis truly heartening to see, read, the comments of ones who have not the slightest notion of the truth. Palin shoots from an airplane??? Palin builds a coal plant in her own (small) town???? Context is the whole amount of discussion, not small parts of the text. Even Annie in Alaska knows better. Have any of you detractors seen anyone be launched into the limelight of the political arena with such speed and controversy? What are you all afraid of? Get to know the person. Then make statements of FACT, whether pro or con let them be fact and not extensions of rumor. Americans are afraid to educate themselves and believe anything the George Soros and Michael Moores of the world print say or make films of for mass manipulation of the listeners.
