Days before the start of the Republican National Convention, the Ramsey County Sheriff's Department, the Minneapolis Police Department, and the FBI raided houses of protesters suspected of "conspiring to riot." While only a few individuals were eventually arrested, several dozen were detained, searched, and questioned.

According to witness accounts, on Friday and Saturday, 20 to 30 officers raided at least three different locations and confiscated laptops, political literature, and personal journals of the individuals there.

Bruce Nestor, a Minnesota lawyer from the National Lawyers Guild, is currently representing one of the protesters and noted to Glenn Greenwald of Salon.com that "conspiracy to commit riot" in this context "basically criminalizes political advocacy." He stated that the allegations to justify the raids are "hardly ever used in state court."

State and federal officials assert that the arrests are an attempt to pursue "anarchists" and are justified. Many legal experts, activists, and community members, however, argue that the actions by state and federal officers are unwarranted and are a repression of free speech and peaceful organization.

Ramsey County Sheriff Bob Fletcher showcased a variety of confiscated items that he stated "were going to be used as weapons." This allegation was vehemently disputed by protesters and legal advocates.

The half dozen who were arrested are currently being held for "probable cause" reviews. The county is permitted to hold them without formal charges for up to 36 hours.

State and federal officers have focused especially on any involvement with The RNC Welcoming Committee, which has been actively coordinating protests and expressing its anti-authoritarian positions.

While officers are claiming to crack down on these "anarchist" groups, none of the individuals arrested or detained have been charged with any crime.

Protest groups are hoping for demonstrations from 50,000 protesters by the time the RNC begins this Monday.

Several individuals present at the raids said in video interviews that the raids were an attempt to intimidate individuals from participating in larger demonstrations Monday at the RNC. They remained determined, though, that more people would see the events and become more motivated to get involved.

Rachel Niehorster, an 18 year-old resident of one of the house's raided, said during an interview with reporters: "We all do have our own political beliefs, but none of them, I would say, threaten or endanger anybody. If they think that this is gonna stop us from going out of fear, or doing anything out of fear ... it's just gonna fuel any rage that we have."

Whatever government agent

Whatever government agent comes to take your stuff and stiff you, there will be a corporate logo on their body armor.

This is why Blackwater is

This is why Blackwater is expecting an increase in "domestic" contracts. Cheney's mentor was Nixon and Congress has allowed this. He finally has achieved his vision of the total authoritarian state.

wow detaining an elderly

wow detaining an elderly man! This is a clear example of the kind of police state world the republican party wants us to live in. A safe, rights free dictatorship where christian values and conservative values are shoved down everyone's throats! And personal civil rights and freedoms are replaced by speeches by Preachers and do as we say attitudes! I bet our founding father gringe and spin at the country we have allowed this party to create!

Homeland Security...Who is

Homeland Security...Who is in charge of Homeland Security? That is all you need to know.

Act from fear, America, and

Act from fear, America, and you will get more to fear! All the good natured, trusting but naive, freedom loving folks that voted for Bush and unquestioningly accepted the agenda of the fear mongering warlords that Cheney and co. are, now will reap what you sowed. Unfortunately, those of us that saw through it will also have to reap what you fools sowed.

An October incident?

An October incident? Georgia is already an incident ordered by the White House and as with the 9/11 set-up the US press doesn't press on the tough questions. The same tolerance will be shown y the commercial press if Iran 'attacks' the US in October.

Military police- I mean

Military police- I mean "peace" officers protecting our freedoms. "They hate us for our freedom".

A prime example of the

A prime example of the concept of "crime prevention" supplanting the function of "law enforcement". Our "brave new world" has less of Huxley than it does of Orwell...1984 on meth. In their worlds authoritarian socialism ruled and in ours raw fascism. At least Winston Smith had free health care.

Now it's 2008 Shot with the

Now it's 2008 Shot with the taser your fate It's the reich wing Fascist police They want you down on your knees Submit to deception and lies Prepare for W's October surprise Don't you worry, they're in control Sending you down the rabbit hole Martial law will be declared Time once again to be scared You will never again be free When you mess with the GOP When you mess with the GOP Republicans Uber Alles Republicans Uber Alles

That sweet elderly lady is

That sweet elderly lady is Sister McAlister, a goof friend of mine . She has been imprisoned before for trespassing at Ft. Benning at one of the School of the Americas actions--every November the weekend before Thanksgiving if you are interested. I saw sister M yesterday on the March with VFP, a very restricted and quiet event . I thin his picture was taken on St. Peter street unrelated to the search and destroy missions at all those planing and cordinating centers.

Sometimes it seems that one

Sometimes it seems that one can't be cynical enough for this world. How can this really be happening right in front of our eyes? Can't those cops even pretend that public safety is their job? Must they be such obvious stooges and thugs? What the hell is going on in this country?

I sadly agree with "geez."

I sadly agree with "geez." There will be an October Surprise, and whether they will carry it out, I am certain that the Bush Administration has been seriously thinking of calling off the elections. Martial Law is in the cards in any case... can Obama stop this military lawlessness or is the MIC too powerful? Most important will be if he can nominate Supreme Court justices who will support freedom instead of repression. it will be a dark century if McCain is allowed to prevail.... At the last RNC in NYC several hundred people were herded into pens where they were kept for three days without water, food, or bathrooms, without charges being filed. Numerous videos showing plainclothes cops starting fights and riots crossed the internet. We can expect the same.

Geez....what do you expect

Geez....what do you expect from a police state? Give me a break. There won't be any elections anyway, with a nice little fake-terrorist attack on US soil before the elections.....suspended elections...martial law. You ain't seen anything yet.

Does anyone have any ideas

Does anyone have any ideas about what can be done about this? Do I understand correctly, these Americans had their privacy violated, were harassed, arrested, and their property confiscated because law enforcement alleged they were thinking about to exercising their First Amendment rights? How did law enforcement know they were thinking about these things? Did a court issue a warrant? On what authority was this authorized or conducted? Where is the outrage? Where is the outcry?

Is this also going on at the

Is this also going on at the DFL conventions?

Never forget, they hate us

Never forget, they hate us for our freedoms.

Re the comment: "Is

Re the comment: "Is widespread torture next?" --- Nah, they will probably just waterboard them, After all, our government does NOT support torture and still supports Habeus Corpus, doesn't it? --- And Bush has certainly not tolerated any visible dissent at any of his visits anywhere, has he? I mean, are't the protesters who wear t-shirts counter to his views arrested and even fired if they are government employees? Repugnicans are all about Repression and you will never be able to spell Free Speech from the word Democracy in the way they play the game.

The only thing missing is

The only thing missing is swastikas on the uniforms and Adolf ranting from a balcony C`mon noon January 20 2009!!!

Anarchists? Modern police

Anarchists? Modern police would not know an anarchists if one spit in their face.

This is exactly what they

This is exactly what they did to us in 1972, We were called the Gainesville 8 and charged with conspiracy to disrupt the 1972 republican convention. Seven of us were members of Vietnam Veterans Against the War. Everyone was acquitted of all charges 17 months later. It pays for them, they get you out of the way until your presence is no longer a threat to their political message. They also use this method to raise questions about your creditability and intimidate your supporters. This is American politics as usual.

Oh and by the way, that

Oh and by the way, that sweet old lady sure looks dangerous! They certainly need at least four cops in riot gear to contain her and her vicious bottle of water!!

I recall something very

I recall something very similar happening in Philadelphia just before the convention in 2000. The local protest squad was raided and their signs and posters all stolen by the Philly police. The idea was not to prevent violence, but instead to use the threat of violence to disrupt lawful political activity.

the China syndrome

the China syndrome

I watched video of the

I watched video of the police and the protesters and I was struck by the similarity of their actions in MN and the frequently condemned actions of the US military in Iraq--terroristic house raids, detentions, seizures, all of it unjustified and on the slenderest of evidence (if any). Remember: many, many of our local police officers come from the military and have been trained to use gestapo tactics in the US's foreign adventures. They have merely brought them home to use here. Is widespread torture next?

Viva la police state!!!
