Pulling the Curtain on Palin

John McCain's campaign acknowledged this weekend that Sarah Palin is unprepared to be vice president or president of the United States.

Of course, McCain's people said no such thing. But their actions told you all you needed to know.

McCain, Barack Obama and Joe Biden all subjected themselves to tough questioning on the regular Sunday news programs. Palin was the only no-show. And it's not just the Sunday interviews. She has not opened herself to any serious questioning since McCain picked her to be next in line for the presidency.

McCain's advisers clearly don't trust Palin to answer questions about policy and don't want her to answer many of the questions that have been raised about her tenure as governor of Alaska.

Rick Davis, McCain's campaign manager, gave the game away when he said on "Fox News Sunday" that she would not meet with reporters until they showed a willingness to treat her "with some level of respect and deference."

Deference? That's a word used in monarchies or aristocracies. Democracies don't give "deference" to politicians. When have McCain, Obama, Biden or, for that matter, Hillary Clinton asked for deference?

A few hours later came the announcement that Palin would grant an interview to ABC News's Charlie Gibson. Recall that Gibson was the co-host of an ABC News debate last April during which Obama faced a relentless pounding. Here's hoping that a sense of fairness will lead Gibson to be comparably tough on Palin this week. If he treats her more deferentially than he did Obama, we will know that McCain's war on the media is working.

From the moment Palin was picked, reporters immediately began to ask questions, a lot of them. Because she was so little known outside Alaska, her views on many issues, particularly foreign policy, are a mystery. Voters also need to know how McCain went about reaching what will probably be the most important decision he makes during this campaign.

A week ago, Elisabeth Bumiller of the New York Times cited McCain sources questioning "how thoroughly Mr. McCain had examined her background before putting her on the Republican presidential ticket." She reported that Palin had been selected "with more haste than McCain advisers initially described." (She also mistakenly reported that Palin belonged to the Alaskan Independence Party. It was her husband, Todd, who had been a member.)

McCain's people trashed Bumiller, saying she had opted to "make up her own version of events." Steve Schmidt, McCain's chief strategist, said the Times had written "an absolute work of fiction" about the vetting process while Karl Rove told his Fox News viewers that the Times "got it wrong."

It turned out that the McCain side misled journalists. Bumiller was right about the vetting. The lesson is that McCain's counselors are not interested in fair treatment, and they are certainly not interested in the truth.

If the media cave to McCain's pressure, it will be the third time this decade that conservative attacks led reporters to tilt to the right.

During the 2000 battle over Florida, Al Gore's perfectly defensible efforts to win a hand recount ran into a buzz saw of criticism from nonpartisan commentators, many of whom urged Gore to withdraw "gracefully." In the buildup to the Iraq war, the Bush administration and its supporters savaged the patriotism of many who raised questions about its strategy and its plans. Now, McCain hopes Palin will skate through the next two months without any real scrutiny or questioning.

It is hugely unfortunate that the first big story about Palin - other than questions raised about whether she fired the head of the Alaska state police for refusing to dismiss her former brother-in-law - concerned her 17-year-old daughter's pregnancy. It's not just that Bristol Palin should be left alone, but also that the intense interest in this story gave McCain's bullies an excuse to push aside legitimate questions about Palin's record and knowledge.

Of course, Palin's handlers are being hypocritical: They want to focus on her family life and her identity as a hockey mom when doing so helps them and to push aside any story that mars this perfect picture. Conservatives are always against identity politics until they are for it.

Nonetheless, what matters is not Palin's personal life but whether she is prepared to assume the presidency if called upon. The actions of McCain's lieutenants suggest that they know the answer. And they are doing everything they can to keep the media from finding it.

Gibson asked Palin about the

Gibson asked Palin about the Russian/Georgia Republic coinflict. Her reply being that she would go to nuclear war TO PROTECT THE OIL COMPANIES PIPELINES IN GEORGIA. This what her answer meant. No wonder the McCain goons don't want her talking.

Sarah--GOP--the world DOES

Sarah--GOP--the world DOES NOT revolve around YOU!! The lipstick comment, Senetor Biden's comment on stem cell research--everything is NOT about Sarah!! I would say,"if you can't stand the heat--get out of the kitchen!!" But that would probably be sexist. She is running for the VP of the US--it is OUR right to hear what she stands for without her reading from a teleprompter!!!

I agree with the statement

I agree with the statement from radline9 , we HAVE entered the Twilight Zone . It would be funny is it wasn't so scary and their wasn't the futuer of our little planet at stake . I am going to watch Charlie Gibson's interview Ms.Palin and listnen very carfully . This will be her first time answering questions , which better be the tough ones full of content about the dire issues that we need to hear her opinions on , not whether she is wearing a flag pin or not , and not reading from a prompter . With all that hair , I hope she isn't hiding an ear piece . It is unbelievable that Americans are being treated like their just a bunch of sitcom watching , beer drinking , gun slinging dummies . I was going to vote 3rd party , but now I will vote for Obama so we don't get McSame or his very scary , inept choice of VP.

I have students like Palin

I have students like Palin who need extra time to turn in an assignment. The ones who have weak excuses really gnaw on me. Then when they turn in a late paper the quality leaves so muchl to be desired. This should be a harbinger.

"The same old biscuit

"The same old biscuit warmed over," Is an old Southern analogy that is seldom heard anymore which exemplifies the McCain/Palin campaign in their attempts to feed us the same old lies and policies repackaged as something new and different

Dear God- Who's Charles

Dear God- Who's Charles Gibson? Is he that guy who's going to underhand Sarah softballs, marshmallows and beach balls to hit out of the park. Is he the guy who's going to swoon and giggle when she tries to be cute and deflect questions and give non answers. I guess the GOP found the weakest link and decided to go with it.

Now, ya'll go easy on Miss

Now, ya'll go easy on Miss Sarah. She's still finishing "How to be vice presidential" school. I'm sure the GOP has her up late learning to say things like, "Europe" and "In-ter-na-tional". Along with "Gross national product" and heaven forbid, "Commander in Chief" Remember, according to McBush, this is the next best person to him in the whole great big US of A who's best qualified to be Pres-i-dent should he croak in office.

What is even more scary is

What is even more scary is Palin's longtime and devoted participation in the theocratic fringe in Wassilla connected to Joel's Army. In her church people babble in tongues, roll around on the floor and get into frenzies - and Palain stands and addresses the group, congratulating members of the graduating class of young zealots who believe they are members of the final generation to come of age as they await the end of the world. If she believes this, she can be really dangerous. And, just as Obama was smeared by connection with Jeremiah Wright, Palin deserves equal scrutiny and investigation. One wonders if she'll get it.

It was one thing to parade

It was one thing to parade herself and her family on stage before the cheering, clapping Republican audience (what was in their Kool-Aid?) Being grilled by an objective news person is quite another thing. You say you put the government jet on eBay. But it didn't sell on eBay, did it? Isn't it true you were for the "Bridge to Nowhere" till you learned Alaska would have to pony up part of the money? Isn't it true that your church teaches that gays are not okay? Didn't you fire your town librarian because she wouldn't remove certain books? You've put a $120 bounty on Alaskan wolves. Aren't they being killed just so there will be more moose and elk for the recreational hunters like yourself? And so on.

It really is up to the media

It really is up to the media to turn this thing around. People need to hear the unrefutable, unvarnished truth loud and clear and continuously in order to make inroads on the effect of the right wing spin machine. The MSM has been blamed for the success of that machine. They have picked up every tidbit of irrelevant rumor and turned it into a circus. The light needs to be focused on the credentials, experience, records, and visions for the country of each of these candidates. The "unbiased" pundits need to speak fact, not opinion. The American people, by and large, don't seem to be able to discern the difference. I know it's asking a lot, but the future of this country lies in the balance. We need our news outlets to choose the high road this time around.

The United States of America

The United States of America has become the laughing stock of the entire world. How sad that in only a short ( long ?) Eight years, we have dropped so low, in all categories...and all due to the incompetence and hubris of this Bush Administration. It has led us into an endless war that is not even mentioned in the News anymore. It is said that we get the government we deserve. I don't accept that. The people have had their choice stolen from them, not once but twice , and is being set up to happen again. It is obvious why Palin is not allowed to be questioned as to her ability to possibly hold the highest office in the land. It is evident that she is Not competent to even run her own family..let alone the most powerful nation on this earth. Why the McCain campaign is being allowed to be treated so gently is beyond comprehension. Since Palin is a complete unknown, that is even more reason she must be vetted even more than anyone. What are they afraid of ? I despair for my country. Is this the best we can come up with...out of a population of 300,000, 000 ? An old, doddering, senile-appearing, forgetful man that is only able to talk about his years in a POW camp...after decades in the Senate, and a woman that has nothing to Brag about that holds any water. If Palin cannot stand up to questioning even by this controlled MSM, then how can she stand up to any of the Leaders of other countries that have no qualms about caring whether they treat her with "respect and deference". I do not recall that Hillary was given any slack at all because she was a female. What is this world coming to ? We deserve so much more than More Of The Same..only worse !

I don't understand why, with

I don't understand why, with so many people see the how is Palin, they don't send her back to Alaska with one way trip. Leave her to kill how many wolves and caribou she like, poor animals, haw miserable is there destiny. Saint Francis with his unconditioned love of wolves and all creature was not able to teach her nothing.

ABC News has a web page that

ABC News has a web page that is taking comments and questions for the Sarah Palin interview. Sure, they aren't at all likely to use specifics, but wouldn't it be wonderful if large numbers of Americans registered their desire and need for genuine, probing journalism (as contrasted with the "deference" that the McCain campaign is calling for)? To quote President James Madison: [T]o the press alone; checkered as it is with abuses, the world is indebted for all the triumphs which have been gained by reason and humanity over error and oppression." Here's the web address if it's allowed: http://blogs.abcnews.com/theworldnewser/2008/09/questions-for-1.html

CBS' has just called her a

CBS' has just called her a liar on their website. Go MSM! ;-p http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2008/09/09/eveningnews/main4433129.shtml

Nero fiddled while Rome

Nero fiddled while Rome burned. Now the the American people are fiddling -- that is, grabbing at entertainment -- while the USA burns up all its resources and its historic democracy. Its constitution is in shreds, its financial resources down the drain, its citizens slaughtered (over 4100) or maimed (how many permanently wounded???), and the vast majority of its people seek only to be titillated with one-liners by the stupidest pair of clowns ever elevated to national candidacy. We need some big journalistic vaudeville hooks to sweep McCain and Palin off the stage, yet all we have are the besotted "anchors" drumming up more of their b.s. and dragging us further down.

Sarah Palin brings what I

Sarah Palin brings what I call "The Abigail Hutchinson Factor" to the McCain-Pain ticket. The unmarried, white Abigail was born to a middle class conservative family. In 1735 Abagail committed spiritual suicide by refusing water or food so that she could be " with her Jesus". Her misfortunate action created a new cultural meme in the Evangelical Movement. Young women imitated her. Many died. A cultural hysteria followed. In 2008 while women, especially middle class, are now more divorced, less likely to have support for their children, have fewer social services, work more, are more educated, but underpaid, and believe that Government has failed them in the courts and elsewhere and are seething, suffering, and mad as hell. White women are now feeling what Black women have felt and experienced for a long time. Sarah Palin to the rescue. Palin offers a bitter tongue women which women feel but oppress. She scolds the "good ole boys status quo" which women vent nearly everyday. Palin looks like them, has tragedies like them. Palin appeals to the postponed irrationality of angst, the marginalization and lack of hope which most women feel. This " new hysteria": in the form of Palin frenzy is a psychological expression for Palin who seems strong in the face of tragedy and personal hardship. It is this "power" which women are seeking in the pretty face of Ms. Palin who can rant even without substance. This "strength" which women of all classes seek if found in our modern day Abagail. Hillary Clinton was right. She broke the glass ceiling. Now the glass shards of centuries of neglect and abuse are falling from the ceiling, tearing, cutting, bleeeding the bodies and subconscious psyche and souls of those tired of betrayal. It is far more important to see a woman "kick ass" publicly even if, as a VP candidate she remains nothing much. It doesn't matter. Women identify because they now have her "mouth" which is expressing, tho' falsely, the latent content of american women's minds and hearts. How sad and pathetic this is. John McCain should be ashamed, but he isn't running anymore - its the biblical Sarah and nobody cares if she is a theocrat and enemy of women.

Kim Jong Il is NOT missing!

Kim Jong Il is NOT missing! He's just wearing lipstick!!!

The Republican Party's

The Republican Party's mantra...."Do as I say, not as I do".

"Deomocracy" is in a very

"Deomocracy" is in a very sad state in America. The media should do the job it is there for, not pander to politicians. Can they not see how this pandering has led to the mess the country is in now or do they really care. I don't think they do.

Does anyone else find it

Does anyone else find it "weird" to see Palin and McCain stumping and McCain standing behind her like a confused uncle. He looks like a robot who needs some programming before he dares speak. Is this the administration we want--AGAIN?

We have entered the Twilight

We have entered the Twilight Zone of politics, where nothing seems as it is. Instead of the focus on the issues, we are getting a slimeball media hyped circus of events that don't seem real. Is this what America really wants? Sensible people have been left out of the question and the mud wrestlers have taken over. It's like watching "professional" wrestling. I know who I am voting for and now I just can't wait for it to be over.
