Running From Reality

If there was one pre-eminent characteristic of the Republican convention this week, it was the quality of deception. Words completely lost their meaning. Reality was turned upside down.

From the faux populist gibberish mouthed by speaker after speaker, you would never have known that the Republicans have been in power over the past several years and used that titanic power to lead the country to its present sorry state.

In his acceptance speech on Thursday night, Senator John McCain did his best Sam Cooke imitation ("A Change is Gonna Come") and vowed to put the country "back on the road to prosperity and peace."

Mr. McCain spoke at the end of a day in which stock market indexes plunged. The next morning the Labor Department gave us the grim news that another 84,000 jobs had been lost in August, and that the official unemployment rate had climbed to 6.1 percent - the highest in five years.

If there were any good ideas at this convention of mostly rich and mostly right-wing delegates about how to haul the country out of this mess that the G.O.P. has gotten it into, they were kept well hidden. Perhaps they were tucked away behind the more prominently displayed creationism and "just-say-no to global warming" documents.

It stretches the mind almost to the breaking point to think of John McCain as an agent of substantive change. He once believed that Phil Gramm was the most qualified person in the United States to be president. And he now believes that Sarah Palin is the most qualified to be vice president.

That is not the fault of Mr. Gramm or Ms. Palin. But it sure tells us a lot about the judgment of John McCain.

Mr. McCain is a warrior, a former fighter pilot, and it's no secret that Americans have long been thrilled by the romantic Top Gun narrative of fighter pilots, those specialists in the realm of the dangerous and the reckless. But we've also seen what dangerous and reckless behavior in the White House can do to a nation.

Sarah Palin may someday become president, and for all we know she may be a great one. But she was not chosen as Mr. McCain's running mate after long and careful consideration and consultation. The best evidence is that she was a somewhat impulsive choice. Voters would be well advised to proceed with caution.

For most voters, the No. 1 issue in this campaign is the financial struggle facing working families that are trying to cope with job losses, declining wages, the high cost of health care, home foreclosures, bankruptcies and the like.

To a great extent these problems are the result of national policies, forged under Republican rule, that overwhelmingly favored the interests of the very wealthy over working people.

Senator McCain's economic guru through all of this was Mr. Gramm, a former Republican senator from Texas and chairman of the banking committee. He was a demon for deregulation, and he and his wife, Wendy, who once led the presidential Task Force on Regulatory Relief in the Reagan administration, were among the big recipients of Enron's largess.

Phil Gramm was one of the lead architects of the breathtakingly irresponsible policies (No more restraints! No more regulation!) that led to the subprime mortgage meltdown and the current credit disaster.

A corporate insider in the Bush-Cheney mold, Mr. Gramm was thought to be in line to serve as treasury secretary in a McCain administration until July when he put his foot very publicly in his mouth. To Senator McCain's great embarrassment, Mr. Gramm dismissed the economic downturn as a "mental recession" and complained that the U.S. had become a "nation of whiners."

That may have been a political no-no, but it was an accurate expression of the slavish devotion of the G.O.P. to the rich and powerful among us, and of the party's contempt for the interests of working families and the poor. Senator McCain, it should be noted, fully shared Mr. Gramm's anti-regulatory zeal.

This is an odd crowd, indeed, to be offering itself as a champion for working people.

Senator McCain has been a virtuoso at schmoozing and using the press, which he once jokingly referred to as his base. Much of the press has eagerly collaborated in the idea of him as an outsider, a maverick - in some sense an American everyman. But Mr. McCain, who has been in Washington for more than a quarter of a century, was always embedded with the forces on the side of the corporate aristocracy.

He didn't just stumble into the toxic relationships that got him into trouble with the Keating Five. And there was a reason for the closeness of his bond with Phil Gramm.

The populists' garb hangs awkwardly on the frame of John McCain. Everyman he ain't.

What happens if McCain

What happens if McCain steals the election? So what about it folks? Revolution?

The three most likely

The three most likely futures for America are: 1) Bush nukes Iran, suspends the constitution and is made President for Life while America's economy collapses. 2) McCain is elected, nukes Iran - maybe Russia, too - while the economy collapses. 3) Obama is elected, Biden negotiates with Iran, Obama orders an invasion of Pakistan and 'reluctantly' nukes Iran while the economy collapses.

I'm voting for McCain.

I'm voting for McCain.

if there was any decency in

if there was any decency in one's heart after supporting bush's war's on the axis of evils as well as his own country, mccain should simply resign thus his trek to the presidency says it all his statements are sham politics and offer his sum and substance as a washington insider how the american public can be so stupefied spells doom for what was once a great nation, now rapidly becoming a 3rd police world state degeneracy reeks in every station of life - federal, state, and local palin may think she can make a change, but her history only shows she will become part of it, its the republican way

I agree with what they are

I agree with what they are all saying here if it is not for McPalin. A pit bull? We really need her? Pit bulls are dangerous. Especially when they aren`t raised right. They can be very treacherous. I think they both lie and I don`t like the way they attacked Obama and Biden. he has not said one derogatory word about either one of them but perhaps he should. I hope the Democrats get into power again and this time for a long time to come providing the people don`t take another stupid fit and vote the Repbulicans back in once they start getting the mess that has been created straightened out. I would think the last 8 years would teach them a hard learned lesson.

A lot of wishful thinking is

A lot of wishful thinking is indulged into, Realities and consequences of failing economy are not being addressed. The future is becoming more and more worrisome The buying power of the people all around the world is now a huge problem. nick.

McCain never was a fighter

McCain never was a fighter pilot. He was an attack pilot, and flew the A-4 light attack bomber. In his Naval flying career, he crashed four and was shot down in a fifth.

We have NOT lost this

We have NOT lost this election yet. Don't like what the press and TV pundits are saying phone or email them. Make some noise! I was delighted & shocked to see CNN's newly hired, Campbell Brown's interview with Tucker Bounds, Sen. John McCain's campaign spokesman. It was electrifying! The Repub's were so P.O.'d about the tenacity her interview they canceled a scheduled appearance by McCain on "Larry King Live." Brown & the CNN execs received thousands of emails congratulating Brown. Brown is married to Dan Senor, a FOX News analyst. You can check out the interview at: http://tinyurl.com/6zrgm5

I just hope all the people

I just hope all the people who are commenting here send this article to ten people or do something to help defeat John Mc Cain. Our country doesn't have enough resources to weather another Republican administration.

I am very saddened to say

I am very saddened to say that, after a week of guarded optimism, I am absolutely convinced that John McCain will be the next President of the United States of Total Ignorance. Sarah Palin has created a firestorm, based on the fact that she is an everyday mom with attitude. This country clearly does not want a thoughtful caring individual to lead and represent them. They want someone that is fun fun fun!!! Sarah Palin and John McCain may be shrwed politicians, but they are clearly lying sacks of bull crap. And the American people really don't seem to care. The momentum is clearly on McCain and Palin's side, and with the help from George Bush (can you say October Suprise) they will eek out a victory. This country appears to be in a serious, direly dangerous place. All I can say is, I sincerely hope that I am wrong.

Putting Mrs. Palin into any

Putting Mrs. Palin into any national office is installing another fabricator like George W. Bush. After promising to help mothers with Special Needs children, we find out she cut funding in Alaska for such children by 62%, a whopping cut for a woman who says she cares so much! Add that to the earmarks and the messy investigation into her abuse of gubernatorial powers, and you have John McCain with big problems. A Maverick - a Barracuda/Pit Bull -an assortment of self-deluded cartoon characters on the Bent Talk Express!

Sadly with few exceptions

Sadly with few exceptions the press and TV pundits applaud despicable GOP performances and don't denounce the amount of deception embedded in them. A clear example Mr. Giuliani's speech being lauded by NBCs Chris Mattheus, despicable. It is clear that Chris is more interested in keeping his big paycheck than providing any fair comments and clearly afraid of question Rudy bunch ob bologna. As for this election if McCain is elected as we say in Spanish ... que Dios nos coja confesados! God have mercy on us, because we don't know what we are doing ... no pun intended!

Considering Palin is hiding

Considering Palin is hiding from the press, how about an appropiate new bumper sticker type slogan: all lipstick, no pit bull

Sarah Palin refers to her

Sarah Palin refers to her hockey-mom self as a pit bull, referring it seems to pit bulls' best known characteristics. The inclination to attack without provocation, to inflict great damage, and to hold on no matter what, are traits that line up with the Bush administation's foreign policy. It sure isn't what I want in an national administration or even in the family dog.

What about the clearly

What about the clearly flawed "intelligence" that put up a picture of Walter Reed Elementary School instead of the hospital & the Cemetery behind Lindsey Graham not to mention the Republican crack security staff who time and again fail to stop protesters with poster sized signs from getting close enough to Senator McCain and Dick Cheney while giving speeches to disrupt them & these are just ordinary citizens...makes one wonder

Well said! All we can hope

Well said! All we can hope for now is that the so-called journalists of big media will ask some hard-hitting questions in the debates instead of the claptrap of a few months ago. Of course, they probably won't and we'll be left listening to more of the triteness that has come to define modern American politics.

Faith-based advice for

Faith-based advice for Candidate McCain: Thou flip-flopping hypocrite! Before you slam the mote in brother Obama's eye, you must remove the party planks from your own!

I, too, am supporting those

I, too, am supporting those running in states other than my own because it is vitally important to put a Democratic Congress in place. Some of the battleground states are Oregon with Jeff Merkley(D) vs. Smith for the Senate; Colorado with Mark Udall(D) vs. Schaffer; New Mexico where Tom Udall(D) vs. Pearce; New Hampshire where Jeane Shaheen (D) vs. Sununu; and North Carolina with Kay Hagan vs. Dole. These people are up against third party money with no need to report who the donors are. Anyone who wants a more complete list and find out how to help or if your state is a battleground, go to the dscc.org site.

DELUSION

DELUSION

I can hear the wise-guys out

I can hear the wise-guys out there now: "So what have the Democrats done that's so great since they took over power in Congress?" Puh-leeze! Less than 2 years ago, the Democrats gained a very slight advantage in Congress, but they couldn't get enough of that much-lauded "bipartisan" support from across the aisle to override any Bush veto. Nothing got by Bush that he didn't like. And he doesn't like much except funding for war and (other) financial windfalls for big business. If the Republicans manage to steal the coming election for the third time in a row, we will need a larger Democratic edge in Congress, particularly the Senate, to be able to over-ride vetoes. That's why, although I live in Washington State I also am presently supporting Franken in Minnesota and Musgrove in Mississippi. I hope to be able to add others soon. And I hope the polling places in some large key states will be better supervised this time around than they were last time in Ohio.

I agree with this almost

I agree with this almost 100%, except to say that Sarah Barracuda Palin, with her anti-choice, anti-science and creationist positions could ever, should ever, be president of this country, let alone a great one. She's a product of the far religious right's bamboozling of a large segment of our population, and about as warm and fuzzy as Dick Cheney (with lipstick).
