Silencing the Town Crier

    How in the world can this happen? How in the world can citizens remain ensconced in their homes watching "American Idol" when a true American, who should be idolized, is getting arrested for nothing more than asking a few questions?

    Amy Goodman, who hosts one of the rare alternative news programs in the country, "Democracy Now," is not known for attracting attention to herself.

    She is not a Bill O'Reilly, shouting and screaming at anyone who disagrees. She is a journalist who loves diverse voices and putting events into perspective - helping American citizens get the information they need to make informed decisions.

    Yesterday, Goodman witnessed and experienced something very frightening that likely was not mentioned on your local news.

    During the opening of the Republican National Convention, she was arrested for asking police where her two producers were. They had been arrested, and because SHE asked a question police did not like, she was arrested too.

    After more than 20 years as a journalist, Goodman was doing what reporters are supposed to do. She was gathering news inside the Republican National Convention as well as seeking opposing views outside. Heavens to Betsy - a real journalist telling both sides!

    The video of a demure Goodman walking into a group of police who were dressed in riot gear - looking like guards outside a dictator's palace - is surreal. It also convinced me that Republicans would love to provoke citizens practicing their constitutional right of civil disobedience into acting like misguided idiots. Then the mass media, which have been lifting pom-poms for the Bush administration for years, can blame them and make them look like lunatics worthy only of dismissal.

    If Amy Goodman had been wearing an American flag or a Republican emblem on her lapel, I doubt she would have landed behind bars.

    Voices of dissent have always restored balance after times of extreme, and if those voices are silenced, can we still call ourselves a democracy?

    Goodman is one of the few working news persons to ask tough questions of powerful people, and they don't like it.

    This is the age of the bully, and those bullies don't want anyone showing America or the world that there is concern about where our country is headed. Bullies don't like discussion, and yesterday Amy Goodman was bullied right into the paddy wagon.

    Today, many of those in power want to convince sleeping Americans that dissension is evil - that it's unpatriotic and should be feared.

    How can a country formed by revolutionaries not understand that there is no democracy when there is no free press?

    To kill those who question is to kill democracy itself, and the end product is a dictatorship.

    When Iraq was invaded and the town criers lost their voices for not asking why, Americans lost their faith in journalists who are charged with protecting them.

    Now, as a small group fights to wrestle control away from a rich and powerful few owning our conduits of information, dissenting voices are rarely heard - these few own the people who should be asking the questions.

    But they don't own Goodman, and that's why she was arrested.

    Mass media owned by Viacom (entertainment) General Electric (arms dealers) Disneyland (let's just have some fun) and Fox (Rupert Murdoch, who likes to give John McCain a lift in his jet once in a while) are not about to give newsrooms across the country back to its citizens.

    Those sitting in anchor chairs reading the news are often there because they will say and do anything the corporation tells them to, and every one of those corporations has an agenda - and it's not protecting the public.

    Our conduits of information have been hijacked; a man, acting like a dictator, is in the White House; the town criers of democracy are getting arrested, and Americans' heads are so full of infotainment, Prozac and Zoloft that getting off the couch seems like a real inconvenience.

    There is a reason Americans rally. It is our right, and it is our way of pulling a country moving toward self-destruction back into the arms of the people who love it most - those who believe in all sides getting told; those who believe information without perspective is harmful; those who believe infotainment is not news, and those who believe corporate control of newsrooms is destroying a democracy.

    What a sad time for journalism. What a sad time for America.

    What will it take for journalists to put down their pom-poms for corporate media, get out of bed with the Bush administration and start fighting to do their jobs again?

    Perhaps Amy Goodman's illegal arrest will get Americans to stop listening to those who tell us the enemies are all around us and understand that the enemy is here within these divided states.

Is this the America we used to know and live in? Loss of freedom does not happen in one day--it is lost in small, constant steps like protesters being restricted to certain areas, or those voicing dissent being shouted down as traitors.

Hey, Leslie, please lay off the denigration of clinical depression sufferers. The reason people take selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (such as Prozac or Zoloft) is precisely that they are trying to get up off the couch and start living like normal human beings. Such drugs are not designed to, nor do they normally, make people either more or less pliable or susceptible to news or propaganda or entertainment. Just thought you should know!

This story is not complete. What happened to the three arrested? Are there more as well? Have they been put in some cage without representation like was done 2004 in New York City, in some barely known, not accessable isolation somewhere? Is St. Paul reactionary?

Why have we heard absolutely

Why have we heard absolutely nothing about the 3 Democracy Now journalists and the AP photographer being arrested on the mainstream media? This scares me quite a bit. I knew the mainstream media were lax but when another journalist is arrested and they say NOTHING and do NOTHING...one begins to suspect that the mainstream "media" are nothing more than mouthpieces for those ruling our country and destroying our Constitution.

"Voices of dissent have always restored balance after times of extreme, and if those voices are silenced, can we still call ourselves a democracy? " Huh? In the elections for the president in 2000, the Supreme Kangaroos threw out the will of the voters and appointed Bush president. In 2004 the incumbent's crime ring stole the election against the will of voters. Democracy? This land is a fascist oligarchy. Let's instead ask the real question: Does the United States of America exist anymore? When a constitutional republic ceases to abide in any way by the constitution that grants it legitimacy it ceases to exist. Even if a miracle occurs in November and the crime ring in power fails to successfully steal the election (and they were well on their way to stealing it at the start of 2008) the "new incumbent" won't be changing things that much. For many decades the money has been controlling the government, and the Nazi's brownshirts (now blue) have never given a damn about civil rights- they aren't there to serve and protect the public but rather the moneyed interests. The only laws of interest to the machine are the laws they can accuse you of breaking in order to incarcerate you and shut you up. Civil rights don't exist until the ACLU prevails in a court case. There is something terribly, terribly wrong in this country, and the public is so brainwashed that joe six-pack will watch his children starve to death and do nothing while the replay of the late 1930's Germany unfolds around them. The machine "disappeared" America in the new millennium, now it remains to be seen what will replace it. Democracy is not the question, it has been gone a long time.

Unless one were to tune in to "Democracy Now" radio, (Amy Goodman's radio show), the events at the republican convention will go unnoticed by most.

What fools are we to think

What fools are we to think that any power, no matter what, would not be there for the grabbing? Fascism is the result of power mongering which we as Americans are all guilty of. If we really want a strong country, then we should bolster the natural environment, not the politicians or corporations. When we come to the ancient realization that we do not own the Earth-the Earth owns us, then maybe we will become a true power. Until then, we are only children playing 'king of the hill'.

My horror at what I watched

My horror at what I watched and heard through the footage of Amy's and Nicole's abuse and arrest has no words. I have worked closely with many on DemocracyNow! staff and they are some of the calmest, most objective people in favor of justice that I have ever had the encounter to work with. We are a dumbstruck lot. We must shout in every way possible, but NOT in the ways that feed into the fiasco playing out before our eyes. Get on the phone, write letters, make trouble for the Minneapolis community/police. I don't know if we can count on the people IN the Minneapolis area opening their eyes, at least not my family, so far. I haven't even gotten a response from my brother and his wife, business owners in the area. We must also remember all of this is SOOOO much bigger and more important than the fomenting situation around the DNC and the RNC. THAT is a damn circus, on so many levels. I also believe we will strengthen things we don't want to strengthen with anger and hatred. We HAVE to make our voices heard in a different frame of mind, because every thought is an energy that moves toward more of what the intent is behind it. Remember that. Of course we are ashamed, but in that state of mind/heart, we declare them victorious. We must rise up in every way we can...from every living room, from every email, from every phone call. I have watched Amy close up. She is extraordinary. Please know that. I'm not at all sure the cops who manhandled her (notice there aren't any female cops visible that I've seen) so we need to be focused on the fact that these men were in Reptilian brain mode, almost completely bypassing any logical thinking except what goes on, for instance, during a tense football game... Remember also that when Amy asked one of the cops how they feel about being part of what's going on, his response was, in an impassioned voice, "It's AWESOME, it's AWESOME!!!" They've been pumped for these few days of "glory" for months, perhaps years. Not unlike soldiers on a battlefield. There it is---St. Paul/Iraq... And WHERE indeed are the weapons of mass destruction????? Right---in---our----midst...

It doesn't surprise me that

It doesn't surprise me that MSM did not report about the arrest of Amy Goodman and her co-workers. Unless you listen to liberal/progressive radio and visit the various websites, most people do not know that "Democracy Now" exists.

We lose an independent

We lose an independent media, we lose democracy. When government controls (or dramatically influences) what people cal learn about government, all is lost. Absolute Power corrupts Absolutely, and that is the name of the game these days. --- The Internet is all we have left.

Remember the '60's? Selma?

Remember the '60's? Selma? Birmingham? The 1968 convention in Chicago? This isn't new. Things started to get worse under Reagan--assuming they ever got that much better. I remember standing on a street in DC as all traffic stopped & some black limos w/darkened windows drove by. I wondered who it was who was so important (& inconsiderate of others) that all traffic in the middle of a workday had to pull over. My sister said it was Reagan or someone close to him. I made some uncomplimentary statement about Reagan & she said, shhh, that's not a good idea. How many people were "removed" or arrested for wearing the wrong T-shirt to a campaign event that Bush appeared at? Treated roughly? Quite a few, probably many more then I eve rheard about. Remember the cattle pens set up for troublesome "demonstrators" at the GOP convention in NYC? How many people who weren't do anything wrong were arrested & spend the night in lousy & probably unsafe conditions? Most of them ended up suing (& won) for false arrest. Many, many people were involved. I agree, I'd like to see what happened publicized in a big way--and I think the internet is probably the way to do it, given that most of the MSM seems to be effectively silenced or will present only a very biased perspective. So, those of you who blog, etc., go to it!! Maybe DailyKos will pick it up and it will grow. Do what you can.

For those who are surprised at this, perhaps you missed that the American Indian Movement was born in this city to combat police harassment and inattention to the abuse of American Indians in the city by police and others. Perhaps you missed the American Indian Movement...This is business as usual in Minnesota and America. It is not new, it is the logical progression of our inattention. Writing congress only works when there are people in congress who care. Very few of us are represented by those.

First, this has been slowly creeping up on us since Prescott Bush [Grandpa of W] was Fritz Thuyssen's money launderer, and later Richard Nixon's patron. Nixon had Bush Sr [and Cheney, and Rumsfeld] in his White House. Reagan too. So we're talking about a group of people who have been systematically working towards this since at least the 1960s [and probably longer]. Second, during that period, power and wealth has been increasingly concentrated into the hands of a ruling elite, a corporate oligarchy. This has been done using lies, manipulation, and slick lawyers. The mainstream press, even when it was honestly trying to do its job [before it too was taken over] couldn't have seen this larger picture, because it was unthinkable. I personally spent many days trying to warn people that this was happening, and was met with blank stares and looks that led me to believe I was nuts. But I wasn't, unfortunately. The "dumbing down" of our nation has also led us to understand less and less of what we see right in front of us, collectively. Blaming those who report for our failure to understand patterns of history is a futile exercise at this point. So point three: 20/20 hindsight is all well and good- we're where we are NOW, and have to deal with forward thinking and careful acts of popular remediation. What do I mean by that? I don't mean violence. The system we're up against is the source of this violence, and we as individuals need to be better than that. Violence isn't the answer here. So don't think an old-fashioned populist revolution is going to change anything- it will just give the monster more appearance of rightness. We have to look carefully at our opponent. Its strengths also are its weaknesses. Corporations function as predator/ reapers- they are there to swoop in and take resources and convert them to money for their shareholders. The concept of giving back or stewardship of the system they are predating upon does not exist. They have no other function than to, essentially, steal, and they operate on an artificial bottom line that has nothing to do with the real one [the life force]. They want wealth, and do everything including murder to gain more and more of it. Multinational corporations are the culprits in all of our problems- they control our food supply, our banking [and thereby our housing], our energy, our healthcare, and our war machine. They are the army ants and we are the aphids. The only way out of this is to remove the source of nectar- us- from their systems. Start with cutting up your credit cards and refusing to shop at Walmart [and other such stores]. Remove yourself from the corporate food grid by finding local butchers, bakers, and farm markets. Grow your own. Buy a freezer. Install solar panels. Pay off your mortgage. Get to know your neighbors and learn to barter and trade. The more money we remove from their grasp, the less they have to operate on. Remove your cash from their pockets in every way you can think of. The only way to kill this particular monster is to starve it, and since it's feeding on us, we have to find ways to cut off our delivery to it. If we all manage to reduce the cash flow from our pockets to theirs by as little as 20% [but more if you can manage it], they will begin to operate at a loss. And if a corporation operates at a loss, ultimately it has to shut down. Remove yourself from the grid, and watch the fun begin.

A correction--Amy was brutalised by the St Paul (not Minneapolis) police. Also, fascism in this country was brought to the for by dear old Ronnie in the 80's when he made "liberal" a dirty word. One couldn't be a liberal and be an honorable person. You had to be a "soft on Communism" liberal or a "fuzzy minded" liberal. or at best a very ignorant liberal. All of the above categories fell into the general sweep of being unpatriotic if not traitorious (is there such a word?). I very much fear for the future of the country mainly because of the rampant apathy of the citizenry!!!

The pendulum swings way right and left then gradually makes it's way back to the center. We IMO are at the crux of a far right swing - which equates to fascism. It is the job of Congress and the Judicial system to do their jobs of checks and balances... we need the press to check all three. The Executive branch is not the only branch of government! I was born in the US and I do understand what our government is suppose to do, when one or more branches get lazy well this shit happens. Why, folks like Osama Basnan and Omar al Bayoumi, among hundreds of others, who provided the logistics and infrastructure that made the terrorist attacks of 9-11 possible. I called the Ramsey County

I called the Ramsey County Jail at 9:30pm the day Ms. Goodman was arrested, identifying myself as station manager of a grassroots community radio station in Iowa and politely asked the woman who took the call if they were still holding journalist Amy Goodman? She replied icily, "She was released three hours ago," then slammed the phone down in my ear. Obviously, more than a few folks had phoned in by then but I felt this was unacceptable behavior. I called back today and left a message with Ramsey County Sheriff Bob Fletcher's receptionist explaining who I was, what had happened and that I felt that behavior was unprofessional and wanted to register a complaint. She said she would do so.

This and the confiscation of Ron Paul materials at the RNC convention represent widespread efforts to silence descent. WHat bothers me is first that it is happening and second that the mass of the people are acquiscing in it. THat is scarry. I would hope there would be someone even from the convention floor to rise in protest. Where are our lovers of liberty. Instead these convention goes are busy listing to how God is blessing thier cause. That is scarry too. Hitler claimed the same think, did he not?

This is not about free

This is not about free speech. This is about policies and procedures. St.Paul has whole volumes on how the police should act in any given situation. How to arrest people; how to get a warrant, When to use force. These procedures insure the police do not violate any laws or civil rights. It is very simple, always follow the procedures and you're fine. Unfortunately, the St. Paul police violated many of it's own procedures and policies. This will generate hundreds if not thousands of lawsuits. St. Paul will spend multi-millions in payouts. I guarantee that right now the St. Paul mayor is freaking out. He better get used to the term bankruptcy. One more thing, God bless Amy .. she is a righteous soul.

We have choices to make

We have choices to make today, tomorrow and on November4th on the issues that will give America a future as a nation that has integrity. Personalities fade, responsible decisions on major issues impact everyone through the decade to come. We citizens must demand intelligent discourse by all levels of candidates now. Forget the ad men of Madison Avenue...ask them yourself. If you don't like the answer, tell them so and don't vote for them.....find the right person to vote for and write them in. We do not have to accept the choices presented to us they have to accept the fact we can make other choices. But please be a decision maker on Nov. 4th
