Washington - Federal prosecutors investigating the 2001 anthrax attacks were planning to indict and seek the death penalty against a top Army microbiologist in connection with anthrax mailings that killed five people. The scientist, who was developing a vaccine against the deadly toxin, committed suicide this week.

The scientist, Bruce E. Ivins, worked for the past 18 years at the government's biodefense labs at Fort Detrick, Md. For more than a decade, he worked to develop an anthrax vaccine that was effective even in cases where different strains of anthrax were mixed, which made vaccines ineffective, according to federal documents reviewed by the AP.

U.S. officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the ongoing grand jury investigation, said prosecutors were closing in on Ivins, 62. They were planning an indictment that would have sought the death penalty for the attacks, which killed five people, crippled the postal system and traumatized a nation still reeling from the Sept. 11 attacks.

Authorities were investigating whether Ivins released the anthrax as a way to test his vaccine, officials said. The Justice Department has not yet decided whether to close the investigation, officials said, meaning it's still not certain whether Ivins acted alone or had help. One official close to the case said that decision was expected within days.

If the case is closed soon, one official said, that will indicate that Ivins was the lone suspect.

Ivins was "hounded" by aggressive FBI agents who raided his home twice, said Dr. W. Russell Byrne, a colleague who worked in the bacteriology division of the Fort Detrick research facility for 15 years. Byrne said Ivins was forcefully removed from his job by local police recently because of fears that he had become a danger to himself or others. The investigation led to Ivins being hospitalized for depression earlier this month, Byrne said.

He said he does not believe Ivins was behind the anthrax attacks.

Ivins died Tuesday at Frederick Memorial Hospital in Maryland. Tom Ivins, a brother of the scientist, told The Associated Press that his other brother, Charles, had told him that Bruce committed suicide and Tylenol might have been involved. The Los Angeles Times, which first reported that Ivins was under suspicion, said the scientist had taken a massive dose of a prescription Tylenol mixed with codeine.

The Fort Detrick laboratory and its specialized scientists for years have been at the center of the FBI's investigation of the anthrax mailings. In late June, the government exonerated a colleague of Ivins', Steven Hatfill. Hatfill's name has for years had been associated with the attacks after investigators named him a "person of interest" in 2002.

Unusual behavior by Ivins was noted at Fort Detrick in the six months following the anthrax mailings, when he conducted unauthorized testing for anthrax spores outside containment areas at the infectious disease research unit where he worked, according to an internal report. But the focus long stayed on Hatfill.

Ivins was the co-author of numerous anthrax studies, including one on a treatment for inhalation anthrax published in the July 7 issue of the journal Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy.

Henry S. Heine, a scientist who had worked with Ivins on inhalation anthrax research at Fort Detrick, said he and others on their team have testified before a federal grand jury in Washington that has been investigating the anthrax mailings for more than a year. He declined to comment on Ivins' death.

FBI vehicles with tinted windows had watched Ivins' home for a year, neighbor Natalie Duggan, 16, said.

"They said, 'We're on official business,' " she said.

Tom Ivins said Friday that federal officials working on the anthrax case questioned him about his brother a year and a half ago. "They said they were investigating him," he said from Ohio, where he lives, in a CNN interview.

The government paid Hatfill $5.82 million to settle a lawsuit contending he was falsely accused and had been made a scapegoat for the crimes.

"We are not at this time making any official statements or comments regarding this situation," said Debbie Weierman, a spokeswoman for the FBI's Washington field office, which is investigating the anthrax attacks, said Friday.

Five people died and 17 were sickened by anthrax powder in letters that were mailed to lawmakers' Capitol Hill offices, TV networks in New York, and tabloid newspaper offices in Florida. Two postal workers in a Washington mail facility, a New York hospital worker, a Florida photo editor and an elderly Connecticut woman were killed.

well that's just tidy &

well that's just tidy & convenient, isn't it? ... what was it that Bush 41 nattered about over the Ford eulogy? ... After a deluded gunman assassinated President Kennedy, our nation turned to Gerald Ford and a select handful of others to make sense of that madness. And the conspiracy theorists can say what they will, but the Warren Commission report will always have the final definitive say on this tragic matter. Why? Because Jerry Ford put his name on it and Jerry Ford’s word was always good. A decade later, when scandal forced a vice president from office, President Nixon turned to the minority leader in the House to stabilize his administration because of Jerry Ford’s sterling reputation for integrity within the Congress. To political ally and adversary alike, Jerry Ford’s word was always good. And, of course, when the lie that was Watergate was finally laid bare, once again we entrusted our future and our hopes to this good man. I trust the government to

I trust the government to tell the truth, HA! A dead man can't contest government charges. Dead men tell no tales.

The letters were sent to the

The letters were sent to the members of what party and who's offices were closed while what bills were being pushes through by those in power? If you are going to explain the story, please give all the facts. An organized attack on the Democratic party with military anthrax might not have been done by a scientist trying to help neutralize the treat of anthrax, but I can see why some would like you to think so.

...always so interesting

...always so interesting when the 'lone' suspect commits suicide or conveniently meets a 'coincidental' death which allows the illusion of closure and the rest just gets swept up and packed away for the next 50 yrs...plus the bizarre line that spooks behind tinted windows actually tell a 16 yr old neighbor girl "we're on official business"..?!...gee its just like in the movies, isn't that special.

THis story doesn't really

THis story doesn't really dig deep enough. We'll never know the truth about this or, anything else that happened in the past 8 years. That's for sure.

There are two viable

There are two viable theories here: I think Ivins committed suicide because he was given that "choice" - or some other "option" (i.e., he would be bumped off by the FBI) from his bosses, who were probably on board with Karl Rove, Dick Cheney and George Bush. Either that or Ivins was simply a scaoegoat or patsy. After all Hatfill was exonerated, wasn't he? So right there we see everything starting to exfoilate into innocence with these scientists. It seems to me that the FBI, as soon as they realized they could not get Hatfill, turned their attention to the next "qualified" suspect. "The government paid Hatfill $5.82 million to settle a lawsuit contending he was falsely accused and had been made a scapegoat for the crimes." This is just more Bush/Rove/Cheney criminal-theatrics. Get used to it. They're not going to be convicted for this one either.

I read the article in the

I read the article in the L.A. Times this morning about Mr. Ivins suicide. There was no evidence mentioned that could possibly link Mr. Ivins to the anthrax mailings. The only thing mentioned in the article was that apparently Mr. Ivins was not sure if he cleaned his bench carefully enough once. He wasn't sure if he swabbed it a second time or not. I want to know why the anthrax was sent to Tom Daschle and Patrick Lehey, Democratic Senators who were blocking the Patriot act because they were concerned about its attack on civil liberties, and were pressing for a thorough Congressional investigation of 9/11 which was opposed by Cheney and Bush. Claiming that a man who may have committed suicide was the lone maniac and therefore investigation closed sounds like something out of Kafka. And if you go to the L.A. Times site and read the article there is a video clip that looks like it is excerpted from a movie version of 1984. http://www.latimes.com/news/printedition/front/la-na-suspect1-2008aug01,0,2251419.story Some guy commits suicide who has not even been mentioned before as a suspect and now it's front page news all across the country? That does not pass the smell test.

Possibly he had just

Possibly he had just perfected the vaccine which will now be kept secret. They were watching him closely, and of course needed him dead after the vaccine was finished. When the depopulation agenda of the 'ruling' elite (which owns the entire bush regime) is ready to be carried out, you can be sure that anthrax will be a major ingredient. This is exactly the kind of weapon they have been hoping for.

Never Mind the Evidence!

Never Mind the Evidence! This is another cover up. The NYT suddenly buried their own story and ran the AP/Fox article. see: http://willyloman.wordpress.com/2008/08/01/nyt-changes-anthrax-storyas-i-was-reading-it/ Hatfield just got $5.85 million from his suit with the Justice Department, so slandering another living person wouldn't do. Fortunately, dead people can't sue for defamation. As usual, the left-wing gatekeepers are not going to do any real snooping because they know they won't like what they see. Truthout is content not to question 911, despite the obvious violations of the laws of physics. Sure, they'll speak up for our Constitutional rights, but who will speak up for the laws of physics? Why doesn't somebody at Truthout run a story on Architects and Engineers for 911 Truth? These are practicing professionals who build skyscrapers, and they believe that the WTC buildings 1, 2 and 7 could not have fallen in that manner without controlled demolition. Either our government is lying, or these people ought to have their licenses revoked. But does Truthout do a story on them? No, they do the journalistic equivalent of sticking their fingers in their ears going "La, la, la....I can't hear you." I raise 911 because the anthrax scare happened right on the heels of 911, and I believe it curtailed any real investigations into what happened on that day. All the evidence about the Odigo warnings, Urban Moving Systems, the van with explosives on the GW bridge, Comverse Infosys, Amdocs, The israeli spy ring, etc...all got swept under the rug. How many fingers am I holding up, Winston?

Amazing how many people

Amazing how many people under FBI investigation are found dead, either with their heads blown off or dead by "apparent" suicide. Especially so when they are about to testify as to their activities. Very strange cooincidences to be sure.

If a government is not

If a government is not cautious when it intimidates and persecutes its citizens, it should not be terribly surprised when those same citizens, upon learning the truth, seek redress. It is time for a revolution in more than administrations. Values reorientation is what is required!

Let the investigative

Let the investigative journalists begin their good work! We need to know exactly how this man died. Too many good Democrats have been targeted by the neo-cons and now they are "eating their own." At the very least, this man (Bruce Ivins) must have been a Bush-Cheney supporter who wanted Leahy and Daschle out of the way. This must be investigated.

Hmmmm...not a word about how

Hmmmm...not a word about how the two senators who could have impeded the enactment of the so-called "Patriot Act", namely Tom Daschle and Patrick Leahy, were the only two politicians who received anthrax letters and had to vacate their offices, allowing this abomination to sail through. Maybe Ivins was involved and did commit suicide, or maybe he was a patsy and was murdered to keep him quiet. Just like with so many other suspicious acts that litter our country's history, we'll almost certainly never find out the truth. One thing for certain in my own mind, however, is that anthrax was used to help expedite the passage of the Patriot Act by an evil that is taking over the United States and much of the world.

"Suicide?" Yeah right.

"Suicide?" Yeah right. The world will forgive me for not believing a word of ANYTHING the CIA or the Bush Mafia says or does. A LONE perpetrator? And WHY NOW...just before the elections and impending impeachment and prosecution of Bush, Cheney...and maybe arrest of their CRIMINAL MASTERMIND, KARL ROVE? The list of "suicides" and "accidents" of anyone endangering the Bush Mafia or their corporate cronies is growing, now isn't it? There should be a clearing house for names of those of folks not immediately in the public eye, whistle blowers, etc., who may have been becoming more well known and who may have been "suicided" for opposing the Bush Mafia. Let's start with Paul Wellstone...

BIOPORT! The Carlyle Group

BIOPORT! The Carlyle Group owns BIOPORT, the ONLY organization licensed to sell anthrax vaccine in the U.S. GEORGE H.W. BUSH and many other former presidents/prime ministers, etc, are big players in the Carlyle Group.... AND NO SUSPECTS UNTIL NOW? HA! The law-abiding world sends our deepest sympathies and sorrow to the family of Mr. Ivins. The law-abiding world sends a big rasperry to every person who continues to support and protect the Bush Mafia (Hello Nancy Pelosi!), the Fascist-corporate state now looting this nation, Iraq and the world.... ACCOMPLICES TO MASS MURDER, ALL.

Right on, "A True Patriot"!

Right on, "A True Patriot"! And I'm "ditto" to your nom d'plume AND all of what you said!... Many excellent comments in this thread all around! I'm glad more and more Americans don't take things at face value, and don't go along with the true conspiracy theories that coolaid drinking, blind followers of the blind NeoCON supporters fall for! It is so refreshing that so many Americans are waking up, and not only "smelling" the fascism, but recognizing that indeed, in-truth this country is being taken over by the Fourth Reich, or the never completely dead Third Reich, corporate fascism of the BushCON family! Let us ALL stand up en masse against all of this insanity, and completely stop the subversion of the Constitution and the destruction of the U.S. republic! FREEDOMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! GOD SAVE THE WORLD AND THE U.S.A. FROM ALL CORPORATE COMMUNIST-FASCIST DICTATORS, TYRANTS, OPPRESSORS, DESPOTS, AND/OR DESTROYERS OF LIBERTY AND FREEDOM!! http://www.gcnlive.com/Bible_Says/the_bible_says.html

I just listened to the great

I just listened to the great Randi Rhodes in Air America .What is the connection to the person who was head of contracts and acquisitions for CitiBank of Saudi Arabia and the anthrax vaccine?? It is something you wish ordinary citizens could hear about..

There should be more follow

There should be more follow up on those who were strategically killed in the first Anthrax attacks. The whodunit surrounding this could lead us all to play a game of Clue! that could go on for YEARS.

Well I figure the guy could

Well I figure the guy could have committed suicide- imagine being a respectable and respected scientist who gave his all to his job for the government only to be thanked with FBI agents watching your house and telling your neighbors they were on official business as they turn you into the latest scapegoat... destroying both your professional and personal reputation. Is this the same FBI that offered a bunch of underprivileged kids down south 50G's to swear an oath to Bin Laden then busted them as terrorists and ran around telling everybody: "See! See! There are terrorists among us! Fear everything!" The way I've seen it for many years, the true culprit was caught when the attacks ended, but because he was doing the bidding of "the machine" he just got shuffled off to Buffalo (or snuffed out) and since then they've been working on a cover story. Now they got somebody with no apparent ideological ties to the current criminal gang in power to take the fall for it all, they get to have the crime solved, wash their hands of it, and tell us how wonderful it is for us to have our freedoms taken away so they can protect us. But who will protect us from them?

"Authorities were

"Authorities were investigating whether Ivins released the anthrax as a way to test his vaccine, officials said." Oh yeah...great theory G-Man Dudes. Only problem is he never released any vaccines to any of the people who DIED! Got any more great "lone mailer" theories? What a crock of B*S*.

what kind of hot water had

what kind of hot water had the FBI agents gotten into that they were sent to sit in a car in all sorts of weather for ONE YEAR to observe a man that spent at least 9 hours of that day away at work and another 8 eight hours sleeping? Any sane individual would have realized they were not considered very bright or competent and quit and gone and flipped hamburgers at Micky D's. Talk about featherbed jobs!!!!! And we taxpayers paid their salaries, pensions and benefits all that time. Shame on us for fiscal irresponsibility.

Yet another assassination by

Yet another assassination by the ter*****s at large.
