Conscience is the inner voice that warns us somebody may be looking.

    - H. L. Mencken

In this election, it is the character of the candidate that will matter the most.

That, and pretty much that alone, has been the core campaign message Republican candidate John McCain has been peddling to all and sundry for nearly two years. His devotion to this particular talking point has come to resemble the kind of passionate zeal rarely seen beyond the compound walls of survivalist militia groups; and the slavish dedication he has displayed in tolerating the mindless monotony of such endless repetition is matched only by the muddy mooing of sacred cows along the shores of the Ganges River in India.

Clearly, Mr. McCain has become deeply invested in trying to keep the entire presidential campaign conversation focused only on this mantra regarding "Character." To be sure, he has definitely put in the work. He began his second, and presumably final presidential campaign on the second Friday in November of 2006; in the six hundred and sixty one days that have passed since he became a candidate again, his maximum efforts have been focused on flogging the "Character" theme every step of the way.

Presidential races being what they are, it was simply impossible for McCain to remain totally focused on this one-liner sloganeering project. Every rare now and infrequent then, something would come along with enough juice to merit the creation and release of a new statement. The campaign message machine would suddenly swerve out of the "Character counts" slow lane and merge itself into the heavier traffic, passenger-side turn signal blinking away for no good reason as usual, but only for a few miles.

Sooner or later, the bus always veered back into that slow lane, those newer messages eventually died of neglect, and would go floating up to whatever Heaven there may be for topics that were either too hot for a compromised candidate to handle, or were too detailed for a stupid candidate to comprehend. Mr. McCain has evinced both facets of this particular phenomenon on more than a few occasions, most notably during the recent Russia-Georgia crisis. Beyond that, almost every single time some reporter posited queries about Iraq, or Afghanistan, or the entire African continent, or basically anything else pertaining to issues of national security, McCain wound up dropping the informational ball.

There are several very good reasons why McCain would like to keep all debate and discussion in this presidential race right there with him in that slow lane. First and foremost is the simple truth that the man basically has nowhere else to go. His dilemma brings to mind that old maxim trial lawyers have lived and died by since time out of mind: when the law is with you, pound on the law; when the facts are with you, pound on the facts; if neither the facts nor the law are with you, pound on the table. That is John McCain's entire political reality in a nutshell.

The facts reveal that Mr. McCain has thrown his support behind just about every asinine and idiotic decision made by the single most unpopular and unsuccessful American president there ever was and, God willing, ever will be. The facts reveal that he has boomeranged away from so many policy positions he once espoused, going so far as to denounce a whole sheaf of legislation he had personally authored, because the Republican base despised those issues; but since he needed their support if he ever wanted to have a chance of winning, it was whiplash be damned and the Devil take the hindmost.

The facts, along with plenty of photographic evidence, reveal that while the city of New Orleans drowned beneath the floodwaters of Hurricane Katrina, McCain was snuggling with George W. Bush beneath the very same blanket of willful ignorance and sadistic indifference that has defined this administration. By a horrifying coincidence, the city of New Orleans now finds itself in the crosshairs of yet another deadly hurricane, not only on the anniversary of Katrina's destruction, but also on the eve of the Republican National Convention that will officially nominate Mr. McCain as the GOP's candidate.

Before the end of the week, no matter what happens with Hurricane Gustav, smart money says those pictures of McCain yukking it up with Bush while New Orleans was washed into the sea are going to make another appearance in the mainstream news media. In the interim, do please offer all manner of prayers and positive thoughts, in the name and for the sake of every living soul facing the hammer of one more terrible storm.

The facts reveal that Mr. McCain risked the lives of more than one hundred American soldiers by dragging them through a dangerous Baghdad marketplace for a campaign photo-op, all because he was taking heat in the American press for claiming that Baghdad was a perfectly safe town to take a stroll through, and hoped some pictures of him doing exactly that might bat down the criticism. The day after he pulled this little stunt, an Iraqi militia came through that same marketplace and massacred more than twenty innocent civilians to show McCain the difference between a safe neighborhood and where they live.

The law is hardly worth mentioning at this point when it comes to Mr. McCain. Nothing much can be said about a man who once opposed the use of torture by the American military, but began waffling on the issue almost immediately after deciding to run for president. While it cannot be said that McCain is now an active supporter of torture in all its forms, he won't be getting any thank-you notes from anyone unfortunate enough to experience the waterboarding technique he recently chose to endorse. One might define this as hair-splitting, unless one happens to be getting wet in that very unhappy fashion, and it should not be forgotten that Mr. McCain probably knows more about the realities of torture than just about any living American today. The contradiction here is, quite frankly, unspeakably chilling, and does him no favors regarding his "Character" fixation.

Nothing much can be said about a man who now supports the repeal of Roe v. Wade, a repeal he once opposed." Nothing much can be said about a man who opposed the indefinite detention of prisoners at Guantanamo Bay, and then decided he actually supported the policy, and then went on to publicly denounce a Supreme Court ruling on the matter that was exactly in line with his prior opinion. He used to support diplomatic engagement with Hamas, but not any more. He used to support diplomatic engagement with Syria, but not anymore. He used to believe the NRA should not be allowed to play a role in the setting of GOP party policy, but not anymore.

Nothing much can be said about a man who has given his support to the NSA's warrantless wiretapping surveillance program which was initiated by the Bush administration, which has violated the Constitutional rights of millions of American citizens, and which McCain once believed was entirely illegal. This man helped to establish the legal legitimization of torture, and looked on mutely while Mr. Bush and his people not only ravaged the entire Department of Justice in the name of politics and personal protection, but went further into the realm of abject criminal corruption by refusing to honor every legally issued subpoena they were served with.

All that holds this idea that is America together, at bottom, is the good will of people in power and their deliberate subservience to the rule of law. When subpoenas are ignored by the arrogance of the powerful, the rule of law is over and the country is all but gone. McCain not only chose to be lumped in with these wretched practitioners of serial treason, but bestowed his blanket approval upon their patently illegal policy of spying on every American with a phone and the power of speech, perhaps because he actually convinced himself they had earned such additional legal largesse. Or maybe he just didn't give a damn about anything other than keeping himself on the good side of people like Bush, because he knew he was going to need their help to raise money for his presidential run, and nothing else mattered more than this.

The facts are not with Mr. McCain, nor is the law, so all he has been able to do is pound the table with the mythology of his so-called "Character." The whole POW thing is about all he has left. His "maverick" reputation was already a threadbare and pitiful thing before Hillary Clinton became a Senator, so there isn't much there for him, either. It all sounds like what Politician Hell might be like: damnation down there means running for office on a platform made out of thirty-year-old horror stories everyone has heard a thousand times already, and a bunch of baloney about being an "outsider" that nobody really believes anymore. Have fun with that.

There is no joy in Mudville following the Sarah Palin VP selection, for that matter. This big to-do was supposed to highlight whatever remains of his "maverick" image. The last, best club he had in his campaign bag was the line of attack against Barack Obama's lack of executive and foreign policy experience. By choosing Palin to be his running mate, McCain stapled his entire campaign to a woman whose shiny right-wing Christian credentials cannot obscure the fact that she has slightly less foreign policy or executive experience than a ham sandwich in the pantry of Air Force One. In other words, that one good club might as well have been thrown into a furnace six hundred and sixty one days ago for all the good it will do him now. Bluntly, this Palin choice not only failed to prop up his outsider credentials, but has also raised serious concerns about whether his basic judgment and understanding of simple reality can be relied on under any circumstances.

This ugly reality is McCain's well-earned, supremely deserved reward for deciding to abandon any pretense of character or integrity, with deliberation and intent, while crowing to all within hearing about the importance of character and integrity. Everything he abandoned had nothing at all to do with what he believes or doesn't believe as an American or as an elected representative. He abandoned these things because he wants to live in the White House, period. He wants this with every dirty, immoral, shiftless, unprincipled fiber of his being; and through this has become a living, pathetic, abhorrent example of the damage to heart and soul such lust for personal gain can cause.

For men who have neither character, nor integrity, nor honor, nor shame, for men like John McCain, that kind of wanting is all that remains in their heart, and is all that really matters to them anymore. Men like this, men like John McCain, are entirely hollow inside, empty, and truly dead in every way that once counted them human. They are skin, bones, emptiness, and nothing else besides.

I used to read your column

I used to read your column religiously around 2000 through 2004 or 5...I cant even remember anymore. What a terrible time our country has been having with dishonesty, the failing the american people and then the resulting detachment and cynicism. ....Anyway, I was looking for your voice and can't find you on truthout lately. Where are you? Dont tell me we are really that alone. I feel terribly after the final debate tonight--angry and disappointed--but not because of the reasons mccain stated. because of him. because of the republicans, because what he said about palin made me want to throw up. because they have no class. because they refuse to even respect human rights. they are exploiters of the american people, all of us--including special education students, children, mother earth, women, blacks....Our history..our blood, sweat and tears means nothing to them...because they are even up there trying to win and somehow represent america--their america is an america that is cheap and shallow, greedy and selfish, simply hateful. and if this evil wins--i don't know what I will do. where are you? -

In a test of hope against

In a test of hope against hopelessness, both are losers because hopelessness has lost out from the start and hope was entirely misguided from the start. The ham sandwich is actually smarter than both hope and hopelessness because, hiding out in the pantry of air force one, it escapes scrutiny altogether.

The McCain campaign has

The McCain campaign has purposely turned this election into a soap opera as a means of distraction. They certainly knew about troopergate and babygate before Palin's nomination. The question is, distraction from what? The issues, certainly, but there is more. If a candidate was entering his jet at the end of a press conference, turned as if to wave to the crowd, and instead stood drinking from his coffee cup for several minutes while staring out into space, wouldn't that weird behavior be noted? That was McCain, and the press seems to have missed that incident. But this is just one of the many examples of McCain's behavior that indicates the start of dementia. Sudden bursts of anger, misspoken words, confusion and staring out into space are examples of McCain's growing affliction with dementia. He has had a distinguished career, but is not now fit for the office of President. Don't let the pitbull and pony show distract from the candidate as the McCain campaign attempts to script and shield their candidate for the next 60 days.

Americans like all

Americans like all "nationalities" will get the leader they deserve - and America deserves John McCain! White supremacy, corporate elitism, sexist condescension (as if a woman leading a male identified organization is somehow gender emancipation - rather than neo-sexism),wars for profit and access to resources, contempt for urban poor; disregard of racist police murder in Black and Latino communities under the guise of the war on drugs or combatting illegal immigration and an imperial world vision that both Obama and McCain (both McCain and Obama agree on the notion of American empire - they only differ on the methods of its maintenance). All of this and more coupled with a basically ignorant population translates into beginning of the "end of daze" for American empire. O, and we should never underestimate the power of plenty of ignorant people - with little or no handle on world history. Obama had to denounce and distance himself from every facet of the African experience in racist America to become a "viable" candidate for white America - white supremacy needed a pass in order to get to the next stage of "empire" in a world full of people's color who have had their fill of the notion of European "manifest destiny". Obama, the new face of American empire is not so much a leader that America deserves, as he is the leader the American oligarchic classes molded and chosen to front their game of "western democracy" and economic globalization (New Age Imperialism) having a Palin a dead pacemaker battery away from the American Presidency is not such a scary thought for White America's "foreign policy" intelligentsia - she is a perfect foil for the rule of Empire by secret councils. All that is not real is ultimately camouflage. Unfortunately, of all the mammals on this planet only humans aren't innately color blind. Black America's choices are clear: "new and improved racist corporate rule - or old style racist corporate rule - either way, winner take all!

AND HOW MUCH DO YOU WANT TO

AND HOW MUCH DO YOU WANT TO BET THAT MC CAIN WILL PARDON THE ENTIRE BUSH ADMINISTRATION ON HIS FIRST DAY IN OFFICE?

McCain is insane. It's

McCain is insane. It's Stockholm's syndrome. "Nothing much can be said about a man who once opposed the use of torture by the American military, but began waffling on the issue almost immediately after deciding to run for president," Pitt says, and that tells it all. To have this man in charge of nuclear weapons is like having a drunk drive your child's school bus.

Fear votes in droves.

Fear votes in droves. Accurate assessment by you shows the cracks in McCain's image that reveal a phony hollow sell-out within. I would think he'd take a stand on torture. Will, nice points well stated. Note however, that Palin stood strongly against the Alaska Domino Effect versus the new soviet empire. I hear Wasilly had an orderly fishing and game licensing office under her command (the secretary there, Bobby Sue, finally filed the moose permits in the different drawer than the salmon licenses -- she used to mix em together.) Republicans in times of war tell us to circle the wagons, while their politicians circle unseen above like vultures waiting to feast on ill-begotten power. The Republicans are pro-warfare and not merely pro-war. Their convention was an advertisement for warfare. It was like some Brave New W0rld of constant war and unending propaganda. Fearm0ngering patriotic calls for bloodshed (of selves and others seem) to resound well in uncertain times. They gave W a blank check internationally for years. Our soldiers deserve respect for their selflessness and bravery, but they deserve also that their dutiful service not be used rashly. During the convention the new brand of Republican warriors never even bothered to mention that victory may sometime bring peace and security. At least in WWII we hoped for peace after war, rather than using one war to slide us into a new war in, say, Iran next time. Who knows maybe we can get a new Cold War with Russia going again. Sure McCain was a hero to serve, but since then was not consistently the maverick he purports to be, say during the Keating Five Hearing. Will, buddy, gimme a call and we'll get a couple beers.

Let's hear the real truth

Let's hear the real truth about all the rest of McCain's amorous affairs. The current trophy wife was not the first. The character thing should be explored, and the whole story of how he threw out his first wife after the year-long affaire with Cindy should be told. We should also have a bit more information to verify that he was, indeed, a hero in Hanaoi and not, as some reports suggest, a rat who survived quite well by turning on his fellow POWs. Or are the Repubs already working on destroying all evidence (and maybe all observors who could spill the beans)??

It matters not who or what

It matters not who or what the Republican candidate is since the script that comes to mind is the bombing of Iran, the Declaration of an Emergency, and the need for Martial Law. This will lead to the postponement of the election and the continuance of King George as ruler, although Emperor Bush might be more appropriate. In the UNLIKELY event that this does not happen, then the manipulation of Voting Machines and the stupidity of the religious nuts on the right, will ensure a Republican victory. In that event I foresee McCain dying before the end of his first term, to allow Palin to prove the ridiculousness of a woman in the White House, which will suit the antiquated outlook of the Carlyle Group and other such ultra Right wing organizations. Pressure your Representatives my attending local meetings and raising your points there. If you are shut up and accused of heckling, carry that complaint to the local party office. It is way past time that Americans learned about participatory democracy as practiced in Western Europe, where heckling and questions are considered a normal part of any political assembly.

I believe the most patriotic

I believe the most patriotic thing each of us can do is to VOTE ON PAPER BALLOTS AND VOLUNTEER TO SERVE AS INSPECTORS OF ELECTION IN NOVEMBER. It's not likely that the electronic voting machines will be replaced by November, and it's fairly common knowledge (see RFK Jr's articles on "How Bush stole the 2004 election") that the machines are "rigged" . We need to make sure that the mistakes (complacency) of the past do not continue in 2008. I also believe that the citizens of this country have the intelligence to recognize the potential for disaster that a McCain presidency will bring. The only way we can insure the future of our democracy is to stand up and participate in certifying the results of a"clean" election.

A new low! Making Palin's

A new low! Making Palin's daughter to be somehow heroic for getting pregnant while still a child and "deciding" to bear that child, entering marriage at 17 with another adolescent teenager surely displays what the "family values" of the Christian zealot right are! What happens when the teenage daughters of America begin to emulate Palin's "heroic" daughter, getting knocked up enmasse, a population boom of right wing zealot children having children. What family values!!

How come the media is mum

How come the media is mum about McCain being one of the "Keating 5," the legislators on the take from that convicted criminal, who tried to keep him out of prison.

Of course, the pregnant

Of course, the pregnant 17-year-old will be spun as a positive story about having the baby instead of an abortion, about the "courage" to carry out the pregnancy and to marry the father. That's just great, a shotgun wedding of (presumably) teenage parents; there's GOP Family Values for you. However, there's the other story over at DailyKos about Palin's ties to the Alaska Independence Party: http://www.dailykos.com/story/2008/9/1/4231/18477/878/581881 , and, the story at TheNation about the Ultra-Secretive Right-Wing Group that met in Minn. to vet Palin: http://www.thenation.com/blogs/campaignmatters/352178 , and how they chose her, not McCain, and what it reveals about the far-Right extremists' hold over the GOP. Although it's too early to tell, when I first heard of her selection I was reminded of Thomas Eagleton; with all of her baggage, she'll be lucky to make it to election day. But first, we have to endure the tales of what a great, bold, and daring choice she is...

mcCAIN didn't pick Palin,

mcCAIN didn't pick Palin, She was picked for him, revealing that a "president" has no power. The Hollow Man will be installed, just because he is hollow. And now, the revelation that Palin's underage daughter is pregnant OUT OF WEDLOCK!!! will be spun as "She's decided to have the baby!" No abortion for her-- as th0 all women who get pregnant are in danger of having an abortion, because of Roe vs Wade. Who are these people?!?

I like reading Bill Kristol

I like reading Bill Kristol early in the day, before eating or drinking, so that when the bile rises, as it inevitably does, there is less of it. But today I am happy with Kristol's New York Times op-ed piece, and I'll tell you why. Here is the salient paragraph: The Palin pick already, as Noemie Emery wrote, “Wipes out the image of McCain as the crotchety elder and brings back that of the fly-boy and gambler, which is much more appealing, and the genuine person.” But of course McCain needs Palin to do well to prove he’s a shrewd and prescient gambler. If my instincts are right, the American electorate has had it up to here with choosing fly-boys and gamblers for president. Knowledge, experience, and maturity have redeemed themselves fabulously in eight short years. If John McCain is worried enough about being perceived as an out-of-touch "crotchety elder" to exchange that persona for one of a reckless and impulsive fighter-jock, it makes the case against electing him that much stronger. In 2000, Al Gore was the known quantity, the policy wonk, the Washington insider with decades of legislative experience. George W. Bush was the gutsy, daring, "outside the beltway" choice. Today most Americans wish Gore had fought more forcefully for the office the people chose him for. We know deep down that he would not have staffed the government with unqualified, know-nothing cronies or thumbed his nose at longstanding allies and the United Nations. Many believe that a Gore administration would have gone after Al Qaeda on day one, and the 9/11 attacks would likely not have happened at all. There is more than enough evidence to suggest this. Most importantly, Al Gore would not have invaded Iraq. It seems the height of stupidity for Mr. Kristol, and Senator McCain, for that matter, to remind us of gutsy, risk-taking fighter pilots, of President Bush standing before that highly-orchestrated backdrop of a navy battleship at dusk, in full battle gear, proclaiming, "mission accomplished" in Iraq. Today's Republican neo-conservatives, tasting their own blood in the 2008 electoral waters, somehow seem compelled to remind us of better days, when another gambling fly-boy's shameful and disgraceful jaunt into make-believe leadership had yet to be exposed.

I read all of the article

I read all of the article and all of the comments: something I don't usually do, at least as far as the comments. I do not believe there was one comment that defended McCain. Before Bush was selected in the 2000 election, I had read about his past. My comment at the time was: If one tenth of this is true, the U.S. is in for big trouble. that comment unfortunately came true. The U.S. has many problems as a result of two Bush terms. If one tenth of what Mr. Pitt and the previous comments in the discussion section are true, we are in for more big trouble. I do not want either McCain or Palin answering the red phone at 3 a.m. Does McCain really think women have no brains, that they will support his VP nomination just because she is a woman! (Note the exclamation mark instead of a question mark.) Please, have a bit of respect for the intelligence of the voting women of the United States.

Mr. Pitt, thanks.

Mr. Pitt, thanks. Beautiful, could not agree more. We have an additional little problem however. The collective American mind is largely unable to even recognize the McCain creature. Do we yell at them? Deal with our own inner narcissistic crap? Pick fights? Cast spells, sing lullabyes? As a species,we got to convert some of this dumb narcissism or we can just forget it. Cogent pieces like yours are helpful, I think. Bigger problem #2: The voting machines.

This hollow man McCain

This hollow man McCain claims responsibility for the surge, making a big mistake even bigger, and promises to bomb middle eastern nations that cause any trouble. Everything about McCain promises trouble, from talking tough to admitting that he knows little about the economy, explaining that our economy is strong, and that we can tough it out in the middle east, spend 10 billion a month, (or more) over there and our economy will be just fine until we "win" (which will be never). His pick of Sarah Palin he tells us is a great choice. What is he thinking? Sarah Palin has not been vetted except by him and a few Alaskans. Our country is supposed to accept this awkward, irresponsible, and reckless choice on his word. Basically we do not know Sarah Palin because she has not been on the national stage. It irks me no end that he is so presumptuous that she would be widely accepted when in fact I believe she could become the most polarizing and divisive candidate in America. I am hoping and praying she never gets anywhere near the White House and the same for John (failed policies) McCain. I want to thank William Rivers Pitt for this perspective that sums up how many of us feel about the hollow man and his hollow running mate.

While McCain might not be

While McCain might not be the worst this country has to offer, I'd say he's very close and that as such only the most uninformed, ignorant, racist Americans will cast a vote for him in November. Nonetheless, admittedly, that's a lot of Americans (perhaps tens of millions). In an election, it takes at least two to tango, the voter and the candidate. Any discussion about the frailties of a presidential candidate that somehow omits a largely ignorant voting public, heavily influenced by right-wing media propaganga, lackluster public and private schools, and a decidedly shameful history of de facto racism, slavery, genocide, lynching, and de facto and de jure segregation, falls well short of balance and truth. While no single discussion could possibly cover every possible topic, omitting the tragically flawed nature of many American voters (the largest elephant in the room) constitutes a serious flaw in my judgment and obscures painful realities many observers would be reluctant to touch with a ten foot pole. And we wonder why the presidential contest is so close.

Somehow this information

Somehow this information needs to get in the mainstream media to have any serious effect. Otherwise, it will be viewed like the junk attacks on Obama that he is a Muslim, etc. And the charge that Gov. Palin didn't deliver the recent baby needs to be proven, or else dropped. Finally, Barack needs to stop saying what a great American Hero McCain is every time he brings up his name. That gets in the way of serious charges ever taking root among independents.

Discovery by bloggers and

Discovery by bloggers and google searches seems to be more efficient then that of the McCain vetting efforts or lack thereof. Simply put, how do you explain countless images of Palin just months before her birth of # 5, as slim and trim when a woman of her stature, and having four others, this even shocked her own staff by the announcement at seven months of pregnancy. They had seen her 50+ pounds heavier at that same point. I am a father and know when I see a pregnant woman even early on, the high bump of a boy, the swelling of the breasts and knowledge that you cant fly after 8 months,as once the water breaks, after previous births you cant stop nature. Clearly this is her grand son. Once again as you pointed out,in his rush to take away the media exposure from the DNC, he grabbed at the last straw, and it is short. In the following days mainstream media will slowly put the puzzle together on Palin as it gets worse, his team has begun damage control, and all the talking points in the world will not get him thru this. I like to think of people like Sir Richard Branson, or T.Boone Pickens,as the real maverick's. Hollow man yes, sadly for John McCain there is little left upstairs. Clearly in the effort to look intelligent he has surrounded himself with people he feels smarter than, and we can see how well that worked for Mr. Bush.

Good essay. It was a bit of

Good essay. It was a bit of a shock these past two years to witness McCain's complete capitulation of his "maverick" character, however thin it was, in running for the Republican nomination. Mr. Pitt's summary judgement of John McCain as "hollow man" unfortunately for him and all Americans rings true. McCain's judgement has leaped off the cliff into the abyss. He has apparently decided to let his advisors decide what his positions are, no matter what the cost. This is a similarity to Bush that Republicans who would vote for McCain should take note of. For neo-cons who want war with Iran, McCain is a weak link in the chain of restraint against such a foolish adventure. Though McCain presents such a compromised figure, we must be vigilant about the real possibility of a fraudulent election tabulation, and be ready to take action, hitting the streets if necessary, should we find McCain-Palin have been "elected".

A great read. Mr. Pitts

A great read. Mr. Pitts article was right on as he usually is. God help us if Mr. McCain wins. I read all the posts here. A couple sentences by two different people stayed with me. One by Kathy R, where she talks about how we get what we deserve and felt that is the message that Senator Obama was hoping to get across. She then spoke of how if we want change, we must get off our duffs and get involved. I couldn't agree more. Then from Lou R. He talked about them playing the fear card and or possibly manipulating the vote. Unfortunately I would not be surprised by anything they might do. If you recall, it's been done before. I sure hope come this Thanksgiving, that we have something to be thankful for...

Brutal and accurate. I

Brutal and accurate. I almost would say that you didn't have to beat up so badly on an old man, but then again, he helped Charles Keating while that vermin plundered the retirements of 50,000 old people. So, tough rocks for him. I've actually been calling him "Twitchy", because I keep picturing him during one of his bouts of violent, hysterical, late-onset PTSD, with his finger hovering over The Button. I hope he doesn't get elected, but if the Reps manage to hack the vote the way they did in 2000, or 2004, I suspect that will be the final nail in the coffin of the USA. BTW, y'all are wrong about Sarah Palin as regards the election. She's bringing the American Christo-Taliban right back on board, and those people are the dynamo of the Right. Time to stop congratulating yourselves and get to work, Democrats.

the big issue is the voting

the big issue is the voting machines and the people who control them. bush lost both elections but he wound up with the prize. these people are ruthless. i use words like evil and ruthless to denote their behavior. they are vily cynical about the needs of people. they don't live in the same world as most of us do. if they did, they would be considered sociopaths. but in their world, their values are considered paramount. and those values include genocide for large groups of people who just happen to live in areas that they want to rape of natural resources or 'strategic' locations. those values include pitting people against each other on personal issues like gay marriage or childbirth issues. and they create broad divisive battles based on racism. anything to keep people distracted and confused. so while mccain has joined ranks with these human parasites, it is the mass manipulation of the media and control of the voting booth that makes the day. we can only hope their arrogance does what arrogance always does--makes big mistakes that costs them their power.

Well, one thing that escaped

Well, one thing that escaped me until I saw the pic of McAncient accompanying this fine character piece is the Orwellian touch of labeling the Saddleback Church event a "Civil Forum." It was anything but a Civil Forum, it was an unconstitutional religious test, and I'm sorry that Obama participated in it, although I understand why he did.

During a recent political

During a recent political discussion a friend made the claim that McCain wasn't much a of a pilot and in fact had caused the death of dozens of American servicemen. When I tried to research the claim I came across information that, indeed, McCain had lost 4 or 5 aircraft including the one in the Forestall fire in which there was loss of life but which was not his fault as far as I could tell. Then I came across the Viet Nam Veterans Against John McCain site which makes the claim that McCain was not the staunch and brave POW whose courage launched and still sustains his political career. Instead, the VNVAMcC claim that our hero, who was in great pain and badly busted up with three broken limbs and a bayonet wound, immediately, and perhaps understandably, traded cooperation and information for hospital care. The Vets Against also claim that McCain divulged US air attack routes and/or tactics and that shortly after his capture there was a spike in the number of US aircraft shot down by the Vietnamese as a result of this inside info. (Perhaps these are the "twenty?" American's whom my friend was referring to as men who lost their lives as a result of McCain's actions. The Vets bolster their claim with further claims that fellow detainees do not talk to McCain and claim that they were not mistreated while POW's at the "Hanoi Hilton" (Hence the name?). They claim that McCain sponsored a Viet Nam POW privacy act that prevents anyone from examining the records of a POW without the veteran's personal consent and they link to C-Span YouTube footage of McCain unraveling in a rage when challenged as to why he supports closing down the Congressional POW-MIA investigations, as though he desperately wanted to put it all behind him lest it be discovered that his wartime resume has been doctored and deodorized a bit. The vets also claim that, contrary to military tradition, McCain was not promoted on schedule for time served on active duty as a POW and that this suggests that perhaps the admiral's son might have paid this small price for the Navy's looking the other way and avoiding an embarrassing episode for all. My question is: What do you think of the plausibility of the following scenario? McCain is a kind of Naval Bush. One the prodigal son and grandson of a Senator and President the other of two Admirals, both get into prestigious institutions of higher learning as legacies and then distinguish themselves with student careers of mediocre performance and heavy drinking and in McCain's case earn the reputation of pugnacious barroom brawler "McNasty". Now suppose this showboating bad-boy, tough guy and mediocre pilot gets shot down and terribly hurt and understandably asks for hospital care and gets it in exchange for a little "harmless" routine information. How would this fellow feel weeks later when discharged from the hospital and returned to the Hanoi Hilton? Is it a stretch to imagine that he would feel guilt and shame and that he would repair his self image and esteem by taunting and bating his captors into beatings and other mistreatment and solitary confinement? Wouldn't he make a point of belligerently refusing early release and special treatment as the son of the commanding admiral? McCain's own autobiography records that he broke down and cooperated and that his experience as a POW was an epiphany that changed his life from wanton McNasty to dedicated public servant; I'm just wondering about the time line and details and true psychological basis of this almost religious conversion. Then I ask: Do any of you agree that there might be a connection here? That after his understandable (though, to some, treasonous and certainly not heroic) moment of weakness and following the awful self-recognition of who he was or had been and after dumping the first wife and finding an heiress to bankroll his future political life, he has tried and tried to wash the stain away by mostly until recently being a pretty stand-up guy. A guy I could vote for (Not being without sin or weaknesses of my own.). Except for one thing. He goes too far. I fear that his search for new enemies: China, Russia, Iran and his tendency to always favor the military option, be it "Bomb, bomb, bomb...Bomb, bomb Iran" or his current belligerence toward Russian in Georgia, is rooted in his lifelong military culture and his dark personal secret. He wants and needs to redeem himself, the military (the tribe from whence he comes) and the entire country from the personal and collective "shame" and "failure" of the Viet Nam experience. He's fighting the "last war", something military historians have warned not to do for the last hundred years. He says "I know how to fight wars. I know how to win wars." I doubt it. Nothing in his Annapolis transcript to suggest he was awake for those lectures. I think he just needs to launder his soul with a win. I suppose that's not all bad; it just bothers me if it's all based on a lie. What do you think?

In spite of his "I was a

In spite of his "I was a POW" rhetoric, McCain is certainly no American example. As for Cindy Hensley McCain, her dad did the same thing to his first wife and daughter that McCain did to his: left them for another woman (Cindy's mother.) Then he left his fortune to Cindy, and gave his oldest daughter a mere pittance. But the worst thing Jim Hensley did was to work for Kemper Marley, who worked for Mafia boss Meyer Lansky (who was overlord of the gambling syndicate in NV.) In fact, Hensley went to prison for "racketeering." Kemper Marley was the richest man in AZ due to his nefarious dealings with the Bronfman liquor lords and the Las Vegas mafia. He was always the main suspect in the (reporter) Don Bolles car-bomb assassination, but there never was enough evidence to bring him to justice. McCain has obviously benefited from the Hensley dirty money--10 homes and a private jet and more...I'm thinking the maverick label may be due more to erratic thoughts than to actual independent behavior.

It's been awhile, Mr. Pitt,

It's been awhile, Mr. Pitt, and I'm pleased with this column you returned with. One can only hope that whatever Gustav does to the Gulf Coast, your words will do worse to the Republican Party. If there was ever a time to lose it and go to a multi-party system in the US, it arrived with Nixon, took over with Reagan and with the help of these little neocon ideologue frankensteins, transformed the American reality show into an animated sitcom about corrupt and priapic politicians, tentshow revivalists, flat earthers and every kind of obscurantist me-firster yet to abuse the privilege of literacy. And as Pete Seeger put in in song, "We elect 'em again and again." He's right, of course, but let's hope not absolutely.

While reflecting on McCain's

While reflecting on McCain's charming character, toss this into the pot: http://www.salon.com/news/1998/06/25newsb.html A joke too bad to print? HOW SEN. JOHN McCAIN'S TASTELESS TWO-LINER ABOUT CHELSEA CLINTON AND JANET RENO WAS CENSORED OUT OF THE NATION'S LEADING NEWSPAPERS. BY DAVID CORN SALON | June 25, 1998 During the last few months, many established media outlets have decided to report innuendo and rumor about the Clinton-Lewinsky scandal, as long as they have a source they can cite (at least anonymously), or another media player has reported the same. But this new standard in the practice of journalism seemingly does not extend to other political figures, at least not media darlings like Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz. Earlier this month, at a Republican Senate fund-raiser, McCain told a downright nasty joke making fun of Janet Reno, Hillary Rodham Clinton and Chelsea Clinton.... Salon feels its readers deserve the unadulterated truth. Though no tape of McCain's quip has yet emerged, this is what he reportedly said: Why is Chelsea Clinton so ugly? Because her father is Janet Reno. ...

How sad that a man I usually

How sad that a man I usually disagreed with, but respected nonetheless, has sunk so low. In considering the two "Mavericks", we must remember that Bart and Bret were con men more than gamblers. Better to elect that ham sandwich today, than wait in trepidation for tomorrow.

Interesting to see McCain

Interesting to see McCain discussed the way I have discussed Obama. The sad thing to me is that the Democrats have chosen to 'nominate' a featherweight like Obama when we could have had a true champion and leader. I fear this will be a missed opportunity that will haunt us for a long time to come.

I personally met and briefly

I personally met and briefly spoke with McCain at DCA, by chance, several years ago. In that brief encounter, he expressed outrage that the revolving door at the Bush White House had put former regulators in key positions in the pharmaceutical industry. I learned from this that McCain knows the smell of corruption and, at least then, he didn't like the smell of it at all. Later, McCain had his famous confrontation with Bush over torture, but then he backed down. And then he backed down on everything; he went over to the dark side. Everything since then has been a horrifying dissipation of the character I had admired. Mr. Pitt has it right. This has been worse than watching McCain being tortured; it has been like watching his death by voluntary disembowelment. Was he bought? Was he terrorized by the Bushies? Did his desire for glory overwhelm his conscience? Or has he been replaced by some monstrous golem with a remote control held in Karl Rove's soft pudgy hands? Or some combination of the foregoing? Inquiring minds want to know. But McCain must not become president. In terms of character, he's not qualified for the position. Somehow he has been persuaded that the purpose of our national institutions is to be exploited by those in a position to exploit them. If institutions that Americans have given their lives to protect are destroyed by such exploitation, that's just the normal collateral damage that's always incurred when doing the business of politics. (Which the Bushies have done much to confuse with the business of war.) That despicable attitude was not present in the McCain I met at DCA, years ago, but I venture to say that it's the apparent attitude of today's McCain, and of at least some of the powers within the GOP. And that unprecedented similarity of attitude is no coincidence.

McCain said tonight he might

McCain said tonight he might give his aceptance speech for the Republican nomination from the Gulf region. Talk about politicizing an American tragedy.

Thank you, Mr. Pitt, for

Thank you, Mr. Pitt, for this thoughtful, well-constructed, informative article. It should be required reading for each & every person before they vote on November 4th. It will surely be a travesty for American citizens should John McCain be elected the next president of the United States.

What a sad, sad day in

What a sad, sad day in America when so many Americans buy McShames line of blarney. This sick Palin pick clearly demonstrates his reckless judgment, and is a frightening harbinger of things to come from his puerile decision-making. Your erudite essay says it all, and I will pass it on. McCain is quite a character, but his moral constitution checked out at the Hanoi Hilton. McShame/Palin will continue to destroy our Constitution! Thank you for your eloquent appraisal of the order of his house.

As a Navy veteran whose

As a Navy veteran whose father and grandfather were not 4 star Admirals, I would like for John McCain's war records be open for inspection and I want to see how he has treated the POW's once he has returned home and in his subsequent actions!

Sorry Mr. Pitt. I was

Sorry Mr. Pitt. I was looking for facts, but you are 'pounding on the table' in this piece. I completely agree that McCain/Palin is not our ticket, but I would have liked a bit more in the way of talking points I could use. There is very little of substance I can use. I don't like it when the right wingnuts go for argument ad hominum - nor do I like it when you do it.

Another eloquently written

Another eloquently written commentary! How the Republican party manages to survive at all is beyond my understanding! How does something like "family values" get warped into meaning dumping your ailing wife and marrying a 25-years-younger rich girlfriend? Character indeed! And what does "family values" have to do with Palin leaving her 4-month-old Down Syndrome baby home while she puts in her 70-hour-work week, as a VP is expected to do? What kind of sound judgment does it show for a presidential candidate to pick a VP with absolutely zero foreign policy experience, or any real experience for that matter, who asks "what does a VP do"? Is McCain really the man we want getting that 3a.m. phone call if he can't even make a sound and reasonable decision after more than 600 days of preparation? Maybe Palin was chosen because McCain knew she wouldn't challenge his authority. He didn't want to be another Bush with a Cheney breathing down his neck and calling all the shots. McCain has a well known temper and history of demanding to be in charge. Can anything be more frightening for Americans (or the world, for that matter) than a man like McCain being in charge? God save us all if by some miracle of fate he should be the next selected president.

John McCain, III was a

John McCain, III was a "songbird" for the North Vietnamese. Do you know what a "songbird" is? It is not a patriot. Check the newspapers of that date -- the New York Times.

A Brilliant well annotated

A Brilliant well annotated article. I am sadly admiring of the deafening ring of truth to it...as I am sadly aware of the frightening choice of his running mate. MAYBE, please maybe, this time the American public will not be as foolish and chose a chance to make things right as we go through all the difficult times. A chance for someone to inspire the young people we have left with the baggage of our "boomer" generation. kudos,

I am looking forward to Joe

I am looking forward to Joe Biden characterizing John McCain with a one line description as he did with Rudy Giuliani..."A noun, a verb and 911." With John McCain it will be expanded to... My Friends (Hand Chop) A noun (Hand Chop) A verb (Hand Chop) "I was a POW"

I propose "VETERANS AGAINST

I propose "VETERANS AGAINST McCAIN!" Since when has having suffered through torture bestow the right to approve it for someone else and keep yelling "holier than thou?" I figure Obama is the lesser of the available evils and hope he is allowed to swear in. I figure there is about a 30% probability the controllers will stage another "terrorist" attack so the current bunch can declare an emergency and remain in power indefinitely.

Whenever McCain reminds us

Whenever McCain reminds us of his five years in a Vietnamese prison, we should remind him of the time he didn't serve for helping Charles Keating defraud thousands of Americans of their life savings. So much for "character."

Bravo ! You said just

Bravo ! You said just about all of it. However, the possibility worrying me is the use of Electronic Voting Machines. Unless we can have the Congress outlaw them in every state, I am really afraid we can loose this election, even though we have the finest candidate I have seen in my lifetime. WHAT CAN WE DO ?eBBETS

In the year 2000, I thought

In the year 2000, I thought John McCain was a principled man. I did not know about his treatment of his first wife, which would have given me pause, even then. But since 2000, he has clearly shown that he is desperate for a chance at the White House. And he knows how brutal the Republicans can be against even one of their own who challenges them, so he's done precious little challenging any more. Given the sorry field of contenders who were up against the Democrats this time around (none with much to recommend them, and all dragging the dead weight of Bush and Cheney behind them), the Republican Party finally turned to McCain, who has spent the past few years kissing up so they would finally look kindly on him. Whatever maverick might have existed, whatever "straight talk" might have been uttered, that's all a sad dim memory. What we have now is Hollow Man, for sure. To be filled up with whatever the rulers of the Republican Party want to pour into him in the next four years. We must not let Hollow Man and Shallow Woman take the White House. We must not.

Surviving as a POW, while

Surviving as a POW, while admirable, does not qualify anyone to be President. Nor does someone's war record, whatever that record might be. John McCain graduated fifth from the bottom of his class at Annapolis. He arranged for a wedding license to marry Cindy while he was still married to his first wife. He calls for a "campaign of ideas" and then approves the nastiest campaign ads for years. Where I come from, we have a name for that. And believe me, it isn't "character."

AMEN, Mr. Pitt! And the

AMEN, Mr. Pitt! And the likeness at the top of this column could pass for one of a demented old relative who has been watching cartoons on TV in the living room--then heard someone yell from the kitchen: "Anyone want pie?" There's a simple-minded eagerness about it.

"He wants this with every

"He wants this with every dirty, immoral, shiftless, unprincipled fiber of his being; and through this has become a living, pathetic, abhorrent example of the damage to heart and soul such lust for personal gain can cause." What a brilliant piece of writing and perfect evaluation of "the person," John McCain. Thank you, William!
