Thomas Paine Would Have Loved Van Jones

It's been a nail-biting time for liberals, wondering if President Obama would have the strength to take on the right-wing bullies who ran amok in our public life throughout August's Congressional recess. It was a relief to hear the president in his health care address confront the lies directly and to hear him stand behind his preference for a public health care option. But Obama's failure to defend Van Jones, his green jobs adviser, is still a big disappointment and we need to understand why it happened.

Why was Glenn Beck able to drive Van Jones out of office? Jones did nothing that was illegal or immoral. Some of his views and opinions, now or in the past, are not popular with some people, but that doesn't make them "fringe" or "crazy" or "reprehensible," all epithets used to describe them. "Crazy" is more applicable to Beck, who seems to believe he is channeling the American revolutionary Thomas Paine: Beck titled his own book "Common Sense"; Beck produced a series of nutty videos where an actor portraying Tom Paine spouts angrily about taxes and illegal immigrants; Beck has Tea Party protest signs that say, "Tom Paine Rocks."

Let's take a look at the charges against Jones and try to understand why the president couldn't just ignore Glenn Beck. Then let's look at how we can reclaim the spirit of this country and make progress toward a more just, free and secure life, in accordance with the ideals of Thomas Paine.

Glenn Beck and company have three main charges that they think are proof that Van Jones is too far out on the fringe to work in the White House:

They say Van Jones signed a petition calling for an independent investigation of 9/11. What's the problem here? The petition cited a 2004 Zogby poll showing that 66 percent of New York City residents felt there were still unanswered questions about 9/11 and wanted a new investigation. When that many people still have questions about such a major event, the wisest course is to open another investigation rather than let those questions fester and contribute to public distrust. Tom Paine would have supported an independent investigation. Why not?

They say Van Jones is a racist. There is no evidence that Van Jones is a racist or doesn't like white people. Jones has championed environmental justice - exposing the fact that "Right now we have eco-apartheid. Look at Marin; they've got solar this, and bio this, and organic the other, and fifteen minutes away by car, you're in Oakland with cancer clusters, asthma, and pollution." White people like Glenn Beck need to get over themselves and listen to what other people's experiences have been like. Tom Paine listened. He called for an end to slavery decades before it became a popular cause.

They say Van Jones is a Marxist, anarchist, Communist, socialist revolutionary. Now, we are getting closer to the real grip Beck and company have on this country and the president as well. McCarthyism has never been far from the skirmish line in post WWII American politics. McCarthyism is based on a string of lies that tie Stalinism to Marxist theory, to socialism, to the labor movement and, finally, to modern liberals. It's like saying all Christians are torturers and pedophiles because the church burned women at the stake, tortured heretics and harbored child-abusing priests.

You could see this mindset at work in the protest signs carried at Glenn Beck's September 12 rally on Saturday showing Obama as Hitler, the Joker and Satan, all rolled into one.

The attack on liberals got so bad during the Reagan/Bush years that Democratic politicians dropped the term "liberal" completely rather than try to defend it against the loud, irrational smears. But letting the McCarthyites and neocons get away with equating liberalism to fascism was not only a big mistake, it was a betrayal of our national heritage, for Tom Paine was a liberal who believed in taxing the rich to help the poor.

The smear campaign against Van Jones is an attack by the propertied elite - the oil and coal companies and their Fox news mouthpieces - on the security and freedom of ordinary people. The motivation for the attack is transparent - green jobs threaten the dominance of the dirty energy industry over our economy and our politics.

Donna Edwards, the liberal Democratic Congresswoman from Maryland, said in an interview that she didn't think any of the supposed fringe views of Van Jones were the real reason for the attack on him. "I don't think it matters," she said, "What they are really opposed to is this president's energy reform agenda."

Indeed, Phil Kerpen, an operative with the front group Americans for Prosperity (funded by big oil and tobacco) that is behind the teabaggers and the town hall health care hysterics, laid it all out in a Fox news column on September 6: "Now that Jones has resigned, we need to follow through with two critical policy victories. First, stop cap-and-trade, which could send these groups trillions, and second repeal the unspent portion of the stimulus bill, which stands to give them billions."

The "them" Kerpen referred to is actually "we, the people," the unemployed workers of America, who desperately need these jobs.

Why would Kerpen or Glenn Beck have a problem with putting unemployed people to work in jobs that will improve energy efficiency and tap new sources of renewable energy? Tom Paine would have supported a taxpayer funded stimulus package to put people back to work.

Author and liberal talk show host Thom Hartmann describes the true Tom Paine in a 2006 book review of "Thomas Paine and the Promise of America," by Harvey J. Kaye:

"Thomas Paine was in many ways the father of modern liberalism ... It wasn't FDR who first seriously promoted the progressive income tax in the USA: it was Thomas Paine. It wasn't LBJ who invented anti-poverty programs by introducing Medicare, housing assistance, and food-stamp programs: Thomas Paine proposed versions of all of these.... Even Woodrow Wilson's inheritance tax, designed to prevent family empires from taking over our nation, was the idea of Thomas Paine, as was the suggestion for old-age pensions as part of a social safety net known today as Social Security."

As liberals, we were heartened when President Obama called out the "death panel" lie and exposed it.

As liberals, we need to tell the truth about liberalism and our national heritage. We need to rescue Tom Paine from the clutches of the lying Fox news corporate bullhorns who are distorting our history.

We are a liberal nation. And when we speak out with clarity and conviction, we can set the agenda. We saw this very clearly, when after weeks of trying to back away from it, President Obama embraced the public option in his speech to Congress. Relentless public outcry forced his hand.

The next battle - over energy and climate policy - will be even bigger than the health care battle. The survival of our civilization, if not our species, depends on winning it. It's going to be a hard fight, but as Tom Paine said, in a dark hour at the founding of our country, "We have it in our power to begin the world over again."

Can't understand why this

Can't understand why this Glen person is even paid attention to. I mean, indifference is a pretty effective weapon. Yet there these Glen types are, loud, obnoxious, prominently written up on every so-called "progressive" website. It takes a lot of money in marketing to get someone so well known, and popular - hmm, why would this be? If every wing nut article had been about single payer (for example) ...etc

Seems like a nhalf-truth to

Seems like a nhalf-truth to say the petition was a mere call to investigate 9/11 anew. I was under the impression that the investigation was to examine if the USG had set up 9/11 .That may be true, though I doubt it, but it is "fringe", although perhaps less so than Mr. Beck. If the petition was not related to government conspiracy-ish unanswered questions, then Van was smeared without any cause. If it was related to government involvement in 9/11,, that is the cost of going public with fringe suspicions.

George Orwell's "Newspeak"

George Orwell's "Newspeak" has become the main weapon of right wing ideological warfare. By robbing words of their real and historical meanings, neocons reveal that it is themselves, not their opponents, who have totalitarian ambitions.

Why are we so afraid to

Why are we so afraid to reclaim our right to the word, "Liberal." We earned the right to call ourselves that by how we behave toward big corporations, toward monopolies, toward greed, toward the military industrial state. We support our badge by wanting to be humanitarians rather than worriers. We like to think that a woman or man living alone and unemployed raising a few kids might need a hand from the community. Indeed, we even believe that it may take a village to raise a child. We are liberals, not born again. We do have bleeding hearts, or another way of saying that is that we have empathy for our neighbor because we know that, "there but for the grace of god go I." I like being a liberal that is why I am not a conservative..that's all.

Good on you, Kelpie. Glenn

Good on you, Kelpie. Glenn Beck is the bane of all that that is decent in America and he would use his dying breath to curse those who don't believe as he does. This man typifies the rich white corporate elites who have used their billions not to help fellow Americans survive but to destroy the middle class that built this nation after World War II into the world leader it now still claims to be but cannot back up with facts. Our leaders can't point to a viable national health care system that serves everyone, an effective public education system, a dependable financial system, factories that offer well-paying jobs to all who want them . . . well, the list goes on. We haven't fallen down yet, but we certainly aren't standing as tall as we did a decade ago. And Glenn Beck keeps trying to unbalance us further. Thanks for spotlighting how phony Beck and his Fox News cohorts are.

This man has not been

This man has not been charged with anything but being someone who has major charisma in the direction of sanity and productivity for this country, with some actual morally positive motivations!!! And new and better ways to actually bring jobs at the same time! Whatever he chooses next, if it's in the same category of goals and motivations, he deserves our major support and respect. EXCEPT---that he wimped out on the 9-11 story he told...that he misread the petition...that's just plain lame.

Van Jones is a hero and I am

Van Jones is a hero and I am very disappointed to see him leave govt service. The right-wing pile-on of everything that has the whiff of change is sad indeed. I spoke with some fifteen year olds over the week end and they said that they thought that the GOP/righty-right folks were using words like 'socialist', 'communist, 'fasict', and the like because they cannot call Obama or any other person of color (Van Jones, Sonia Sotomayor) a "nigger". I thought that that was quite an astute observation on their part...and a sad, sad commentary on race relations in this nation. BTW, these young people were all white kids.

I'm surprised the

I'm surprised the republicans left out "antichrist" in their barrage of attempted smears against this guy. Should we expect any different? As the republicans continue to melt down like the wicked witch of the west

Kelpie has it right - this

Kelpie has it right - this is a story about energy. Van Jones was a real danger (to the right). The idea that the energy sector might provide domestic jobs - how radical can one get? Ron

Look, I am getting tired of

Look, I am getting tired of the wimpy ain't-it-awful protestations on these matters. It's time to push back. Hard. Where it hurts them the most. $$$ -- the only effective behavior modifier of sociopaths. Unless things have really changed while I wasn't looking at the FCC, in order to get and/or keep a broadcast license, broadcasters like Fox STILL have a regulatory OBLIGATION to SERVE their broadcast public market area. To whit: If Glenn Beck's statements can be shown to be truly false (with documents), then every listener has the RIGHT to call Fox-TV and DEMAND to know two things: 1.) do you broadcast Beck's commentaries? and 2.) please provide the date of your station's license renewal. You can then inform them that 1.) since they are KNOWINGLY broadcasting untruths (you have the documents to prove it); 2.) they either cut Beck's show immediately, or 3.) you and many others will attend the station's relicensing hearing, whenever it is, and ask the FCC to pull their station broadcast license, since no station that knowingly misleads its listenership is serving its viewing/listening public. Find out who your local Fox affiliate station manager is, and start making the calls. Stop moaning, and get organizing already!

Let's ditch the terms

Let's ditch the terms "conservative" and "liberal". Conservative of what? Doesn't that suggest anal retentiveness? Let's go with "progressive" and "regressive". Who wants to be labeled regressive(if he/ she can understand the concept)?

Investigations into 9/11 are

Investigations into 9/11 are exactly that-- investigations. Evidence will be sifted through and examined. There is no need to start with the idea that the USG had a role-- it's just that it is a possibility not to be discounted when examining the evidence. Every possibility must be logically and scientifically examined. It is unreasonable to refuse to examine evidence simply because it might point to something we don't want to know about. Did the Bush Administration ever do anything which hurt its own people, killed them, mislead them, etc? If so, why choose to be blind about what evidence may come forward? If they are innocent there will not be evidence to show them guilty. It is people like Glenn Beck who have scared people into thinking that investigating 9/11 is a terrible, unpatriotic thing to do. We mustn't be so afraid of the truth. Please support the 9/11 truth movement-- which is NOT the 9/11 Government-is-evil movement!!-- in any way you can. Let reason prevail again. In NYC there is a ballot initiative which City Hall is fighting with al its strength. Please support it if you can: www.NYCCAN.org.

Van Jones himself said, "By

Van Jones himself said, "By August, I was a communist". He himself describes how he met communists and anarchists in prison and thought "this is what I want to be a part of." This is not McCarthyism. VJ describes himself in terms that are fringe...unless communism is now mainstream within the liberal movement. If so, the rest of us would like to know about that.

Where there is smoke there

Where there is smoke there is usually fire. Reopening the 9/11 investigation would probably be a good idea now that the stone wallers are out of office.

Glen Beck and performers of

Glen Beck and performers of his ilk, are undermining our Democracy. These talkers are sponsored by capitalists in our Country, who have won too many times! The banking Crisis continues, as the reforms we thought were coming have not materialized. These Beck's and Lumbaughs', care only for the attention they receive, and the big money, which they are paid by the Lobbists. The followers will end up with nothing, and if we liberals keep quiet, they will take us down with them.

PS Van Jones should not have

PS Van Jones should not have been fired. More Backbone please!!

The news reports of Jones'

The news reports of Jones' dismissal morphed! At first, corporate media stated that he was terminated in part for signing a statement the "the U.S. Government actively participated" in the 911 crime. This statement was downgraded to "... a statement that the Government was negligent in protecting" the people. Fascism's the reason Truth become treason Any sane person MUST admit that there are HUNDREDS of questions about 911 that have never been answered satisfactorily. Why the sheered columns? Why thermite present, Why bldg. 7? Why freefall? There have been HUNDREDS fighter jet sorties to intercept questionable flights, but yet on 911, not one of the flights is intercepted? And a goat herder coordinated this coup from a cave in the mountains of Afghanistan? People have the government they deserve.

As Kelpie says, 66% of New

As Kelpie says, 66% of New Yorkers wanted a new investigation at the time Van Jones signed the petition to Eliot Spitzer calling for a new investigation, along with 100 other prominent American and 50 9/11 family members. 5 years later New Yorkers feel exactly the same. 80,000 New Yorkers have signed a petition to put a referendum on the NYC ballot for a new investigation, and they are fighting the City of New York in court over the legality of the petition. Van Jones should speak out on behalf of the 80,000 New Yorkers who have called for the question of a new investigation to be put to the voters.

Liked the article. A

Liked the article. A correction. IPCC (Intergovernmetnal Panel on Climate Change) says that 25% of species will disappear IF we make rapid drastic changes now; more if not. Humans may be within ANY percent of the extinctions-- we can't know that, but it would stand to reason that the top of the food chain would be vulnerable should other parts of the food chain be disturbed. Our neurology and endocrinology were not designed for this level of toxicity anyway. So -- correction: The survival of civilization and our species is small. Survival of multicellular life ---- lepidoptera is crashing! Bats are dying en masse. Amphibians are massively declining -- is in doubt. Forget 9/11 -- it's all about stopping the onslaught of species extinctions and preserving what we can of potable water, undeveloped land, breathable air. Good luck to all of us...

Cover-ups and Lies are the

Cover-ups and Lies are the only reasons to start new investigations and the Cheney/Bush businesses that profit from killing and the lies that made them profit are reason enough to re-open any and all aspects of this investigation. Those that squeal otherwise have too much to hide and we want to know why!

So many comments agree with

So many comments agree with the author. I do too, of course. But what I want to ask anyone who will listen is: Why are we allowing this to continue? The safety of our nation and what's left of our democracy is at stake, yet the 66% of us who want honesty and civility and good common sense to rule us seem to be powerless over the hate mongers and crazy ranters. What cane we do? Do this 66% of we the people have a leader? Why is the majority powerless? Don't we often complain about the "majority rule in our democracy? The majority is not ruling now. Why?

One thing we can do right

One thing we can do right away is boycott Glenn Beck's sponsors. Be sure to let them know why you did not come in. The clerks are oblivious, so tell them why...can be done by phone call or visit.
